*NOTE* I was selected as the Narrator for the audiobook version of this title…. So I may be slightly biased.
It would be incredibly unprofessional of me to rate my own audio book *cough* 2 stars *cough* since I hate my own voice and well… this is Thomas Frey’s achievement. So I will focus on the digital/physical copy of the book.
Ephiphany Z is a book written by a futurist describing the possible… you guessed it; future... Okay, okay it also lays the ground work on how to go from Epiphany to finished product in the most efficient way possible. Thomas Frey is a brilliant man, whom I would probably label as a mad scientist, but not because his views listed in his book are outrageous, but because he is a gifted public speaker who chose a narrator with a natural condescending tone to express his novel to the world, instead of trusting himself to pitch the message. Don’t worry, Tom. We’re All Mad Here.
So what’s the verdict? 4/5
While many may find Epiphany Z to be a horrifying view of the future we will most certainly experience, others will see it for what it is, an opportunity. Throughout the book, Thomas Frey expresses his views with scientific fact as well as educated ideas as to how the future pan out if all the pieces were fall into place… and also if they didn’t. The only gripe that I had with the book at all, was that there were multiple parts throughout where Thomas used, word for word, the exact same paragraph expressed earlier to make a point in a different section. While this would normally be a huge no no for me, Tom made his point so thoroughly with the rest of the information provided it’s easy to forgive.
So on to the 10 point scale.
Style: 9/10 Perhaps it was just how I interpreted his writing, but I found Thomas Frey’s style to be genius mixed with a humorous flare. A much welcome change from the monotonous dull writings of similar authors within the same genre and field. Anyone who has ever tried to read Stephen Hawking’s a Brief History of Time knows exactly what I’m talking about. Keep in mind I read it when I was 11, but I still knew that Stephen Hawking may have been brilliant, but his writing style was incredibly boring to the new generation. This is not the case with Thomas Frey. OH and by the way, it’s pronounced Fry, don’t make the same mistake I did, and no there is no relation to Philip J. Fry of the year 3000.
Entertainment Value:8/10 This is definitely a book worth reading if you’ve ever wondered what the future holds. It presents a compelling argument and is definitely enough to make you think. However, that said, I don’t believe that this book is for everyone. To be blunt, some people are too weak minded or arrogant to accept the possibilities that Thomas Frey lays out. I myself have always been fascinated by the unknown and what could be possible. Normally, I would rate Story and Readability, but both of those would benefit a work of fiction more than they would benefit a book of science since well… readability is subjective and this isn’t a story it’s a very possible future.
I would recommend this book to everyone and anyone that is interested in the future of our world as well as how to go from Epiphany to Product as quickly as possible. It was definitely a fascinating read and one that I will love to keep in my reader as well as my bookshelf.
Going through this book is like being in front of a fortune teller with lot of twisted plots here and there. But it also feels like watching one of those star-trek movie, minus the fun :) but good for the shake of 'dreaming'. Many of the argument and stories were very superficial. Imagine that 'in the future there will be no need for doctor, lawyer, teacher, ...and whole bunch of pretty much all job types that exist at the moment". Some minority story were probably OK; about the need of micro-university, and inspiring story of prediction based on what american's achievement so far (ehm....mostly related to tesla's vision and ambition).
I was expecting more.. So much more. Yes there are some interesting ideas here about time, but the tech predictions and their impacts are underwhelming. The biggest disappointment for me was the the so what... Especially the impact and changes we can expect to see in society. It's a positive outlook that is presented here, but with my lens I see more negatives on the horizon. Especially the whole idea of who to trust, and what to believe, and how technology is not making this easier at the moment. Also there is a fair bit of repetition in the text.
Futurist Thomas Frey does a remarkable job explaining what is up for us in the future. a quick, easy read full of ideas that gets you realizing what you need to do today in order to prepare for tomorrow. The rate at which technology is evolving is continually increasing and we need to be ahead. This book explains things in a logical manner with know airy-fairyness about it. Overall, a great must read for everyone!
Quit after chapter 1. Seemed like a real mess of new ageism and corporate doublespeak.
"The future is a force so massive the entire universe is being pulled forward in time simultaneously" "Each of us experiences the unfolding of the future differently" "The future is non-existent until it passes the field of knowability, but we create our own approach vectors."
I wish I had the time to hate-read this. I think it might be amusing.
Unlike many books about the future, which attempt to offer a magic crystal ball, Epiphany Z Frey instead provides us with a crystalline structure so that we can assemble and re-assemble our own way of thinking about the future." - - David J. Jilk, Founder of Jilk Systems, Inc., Standing Cloud, Inc., and eCortex, Inc.
Thomas is a great futurist. Epiphany Z is a bold, forward‑looking book that really challenges how we think about the future. He takes you beyond conventional wisdom and asks the questions we too rarely ask: Which industries will thrive tomorrow? What systems are about to collapse? How do we actually prepare ourselves rather than just react?
This book is a very easy reading book for me, since i have been reading similar futurist subjects for quite some time. What surprised me is this author mentioned about Elon Musk several times. for this I am pretty sure Musk is on the right track and he is changing the world.
Epiphany Z represents an important turning point in how we view the human experience. I started off asking why it was important to study the future and ended up with a brilliant framework for putting my own epiphanies into action.
Frey provides a synthesis of forces shaping the present and future and what we can do to make the world a better place. Frey says the future of education is "Micro-Colleges" (bootcamps) that can meet the needs of the market in the face of constant, rapid changes.
