I decided that next time I saw him, I’d have a word about maybe giving each other a bit more space. After all, Mum’s always saying that you have to work on relationships and not give up at the first hiccup…

Lucy seems to be out on a limb. Everybody has a boyfriend except her, and since she put Tony on the back burner he’s found someone else. Then on a spa weekend with Izzie, she meets someone who seems just right for her. And he feels the same way about her.

But after a while, Lucy starts to feel smothered. Can someone love you too much? Maybe the life of a singleton isn’t so bad after all!

i have read these before but know going back as adult must admit find the one thing that i s annoying hat the series does not flow [ properly with some one different from the teenage girl gang telling a story i cant really remember what happened to each one . Most teenagers know how important it is to fit in and how lonely it is without a boy friend the reason i like these books is their humour what can be worse going to cinema and playing gooseberry
I . This is one of my faves so far showing how important to be your self and dont give up personality just to please a friend and you wonder how the controlling boyfriend becomes the control freak husband in years to come so although told in a fun way the point is so sharp !!!

I liked this book but I think Nesta is a bit vain. I think she should have something that makes her just as good as everybody else like she should like playing video games. That would make her a bit more normal. She should have something like she works in charity or does volunteer work to get her money. She should have a bit of a hard time at home and at school but still look awesome.

“I can see clearly now, my brain is gone.”

It's a harmless British YA series. It's cute and snappily written. A quartet of teenage girls romps through their angst cycles: boyfriend problems, emotional insecurities, and high-school challenges.

Nothing as controversial as the British teen TV series SKINS.

Perfectly suitable for young teens.

Older teens may want more excitement.

Cheers.

I really enjoyed these books when I was younger. I’ve definitely matured, and not sure I’d enjoy them too much now. But great for younger readers, say about 11-14? Silly and fun but you get to love the main characters

I loved this book so much! I would give it a 4.5 stars. It was so relatable and it taught me that not everything is about boys, just because you like them doesn't mean they're good. It was a lovely light-hearted, laugh out loud book and I think I've learnt a lot from the friend group!

Sometimes you just need a book where you don’t have to think. It was interesting to hear one of the girls quoting a line from “Lady Chatterley’s Lover”

~~~~~~~~
Ceritanya diawali dengan acara libur musim panas yang sebentar lagi akan dimulai. Keempat sahabat karib: Lucy, Izzie, Nesta dan TJ sama-sama ingin menghabiskan banyak waktu bareng. Tapi sayangnya mereka bertiga punya pacar, kecuali.. Lucy. Izzie punya Ben, Nesta punya Simon dan TJ punya Steve. Tinggalah Lucy sendiri yang menjomblo.
Ketika Lucy ingin melanjutkan hubungannya yang putus-nyambung ke Tony--kakak Nesta--ke tingkat yang lebih serius, tak disangka bahwa Tony tidak begitu menginginkan hubungan yang serius dan meminta mereka untuk berteman. Lucy begitu sedih dan patah hati 'dicampakkan' oleh Tony.
Izzie, Nesta dan TJ tidak tinggal diam melihat Lucy merenung sendirian. Mereka berusaha untuk membuat Lucy senang, tapi pada akhirnya ketika ketiga temannya begitu senang dengan pacar-pacar mereka, Lucy benar-benar dongkol karena menjadi obat nyamuk.
Lucy memutuskan untuk melakukan suatu hal TANPA COWOK. Akhirnya Lucy dan Izzie ikut kamp untuk merelaksasikan diri. Disanalah nantinya Lucy akan bertemu dengan sang pangeran, cowok yang benar-benar sempurna di mata Lucy.
Tapi pangeran juga manusia kan? Apalagi sifat posesifnya yang membuat Izzie dan Nesta heran ketika Lucy amat menyukai perhatian berlebihan cowok itu...
"Aku ingat waktu masih remaja, aku agak mudah emosi dan biasa mengucapkan apa yang ada di pikiranku. Dan itu jelas-jelas membuat para cowok ketakutan. Ada teman yang menyarankan supaya aku belajar berkompromi--karena cowok suka cewek yang manis, seperti anak kucing. ... Yekh, pikirku. ... Tapi memang ada kalanya aku meragukan diriku sendiri dan berpikir, apa sih yang salah denganku? ... Ketika kau bertemu cowok yang tepat, dia akan menyukaimu apa adanya dan kau tak perlu berpura-pura di hadapannya. ..." - hlm 69.
~~~~~~~~

- hlm 98.

Lucy has finally decided to give a relationship with Tony a chance, but he's found someone else. Being the only singleton in her group makes her feel either left out, seeing as her friends are living under a couple bubble and have less time for mates, or like a third wheel.
These summer holidays are proving to be quite lonesome and boring, until she meets a boy who seems perfect for her at a workshop weekend with Izzie. He likes her too and everything goes just right at first, but soon Daniel turns out to be controlling and Lucy feels smothered.

I felt like this particular book sends a message to the younger audiences that usually isn't spread enough, therefore young people are unprepared and don't easily notice the tell-tale signs of a controlling possessive partner. They tell you it's fine being single and taking time to regroup all the time. But what do you do when you have someone who apparently really likes you, even too much? Someone who hurts you, while being loving. Someone who wants to spend time with you, and apparently enjoys your company, but at the cost of alienating you from your friends.

Jealousy can be quite natural, when it's mild, but when your partner demands you keep away from other boys, and end friendships with males, that's not right. You shouldn't have to sacrifice friendships for a relationship that might not even last. You shouldn't let yourself be ordered around and oppressed by your partner.

So not only does Lucy discover you should stand up for yourself in love, and end expired relationships, she also discovers how enjoyable it can be when you're single. For a satisfying life, you need to find balance between your duties, your friends, your love life and, most importantly, alone time. It's super healthy to learn how to be alone, to make the most of it, to love being with yourself and discovering more about yourself each time.

Baca buku ini karena disodorin temen. Katanya lumayan :D

Trus, ya udah, coba baca.

Baca ini jadi inget film AADC (Ada Apa Dengan Cinta). Tapi cuman global doang, sih. Tentang empat cewek yang sobatan. Trus, mereka berempat ini saling mendukung satu sama lain. Termasuk masalah kisah cinta.

Dibanding ketiga sahabatnya, cuma Lucy-lah yang jomblo. Setelah sebelumnya bermaksud pengen balik lagi ama Tonny, kakak Nesta, cowok yang cakep banget. Cuma ternyata, pas udah mau nembak Tonny, ternyata Lucy baru tahu kalo Tonny udah punya cewek.

Belum nemu buku lainnya. Baru nemu buku pertamanya. Belum dibaca sih :D

Tapi buat bacaan ringan, buku ini lumayan banget, kok :D

I read Mates, Dates, and Sole Survivors as an IR book. This book was about all of them getting out of school, ready for the summer and dealing with boyfriends. Since everybody has a boyfriend except Lucy, she feels left out. Nesta has Simon, T.J. has Steve Lucy's Bro, and Izzie has Ben. So all her mates have a mission. Get Lucy a Boyfriend. Soon they realize they just can't find anybody. But when she goes on a relaxation trip with her dad and izzie and her mom. Izzie is digging it but lucy isn't. But then she meets Daniel and is like finally we found someone. But is having a boyfriend that is hovering a lot that awesome.
One connection i have is a text-to-world. Sometimes girls can have hovering boyfriends just like Lucy did. As in the book it says either be a goddess or a doormat.Goddessis like making the shots and the doormat is being walked on, being controled. And lucy was a doormat.so this happens in the real world.
I will give this book *****stars. To me i think thi swhole series deserves a 5. I picked 5 stars because the way it relates in the real world is soo cool.Like when they get up to the part where problems begin then you don't wanna put the book down. I also like that it is in Britian.

Delightful, charming, cute YA novel featuring Lucy and her three good friends.

This is the first in the series that I read and ended up enjoying reading about Lucy and her pals summer and remembering what it was like at that age to have ones heart broken. I admire Lucy and loved how she didn't need to define herself by whether she had a boyfriend or not. When she was kind of dumped, she looked at her options for the summer holiday (including finding another boy) and decided that she wanted to find an interesting alternative. She didn't need a boy to be happy.

My favorite part was probably when Lucy went to the retreat with her father. The thought of having to massage a complete stranger's feet just creeped me out and I laughed with Lucy and her father were making the most of it but not really having the best of times.

The characters reminded me of my childhood friends and the fun-filled summers we had. I'm glad that she writes Lucy and her friends as strong young women who are interesting in their own right and who want to enjoy their summer vacation.

Can't wait to read another in the series.

The Mates, Dates books are great in general! I read this one and really liked it! They are very teen novels (particually for the older teen) but they are filled with lots crushes with boys, things with friends and lots more! It tells about 4 friends living in London (even though a few words are British such as the bathroom is loo in England, the only majorly used word that is not used in America that I could find is snog which means kiss). One of the the down sides to these books are that each book is told by a different friend and it gets confusing. Also it seems to only appeal to a certain audience (as most teen books do). These books, however, aren't the best books for a younger teen such as a 12 or 13 year-old. Even though the girls in the are 14 the seem to act older and could pass for 16 or 17. Don't worry though, these books in my opinion may only appeal to older teens, but they do not have references of sex all the time such as the series Gossip Girl. These books are great and I would recommend them, but only to a certain kind of person. I give this book 3 stars.

Collective Review

I first read a couple of these books in 2006. I had a long bus trip and grabbed a couple of the series from a local bookstore. I had no idea they were part of a huge series. Over the years I had forgotten the names of the books but every now and then would try to find them. I finally found them this year from a Goodreads list. Yay!

I really enjoyed this series. I think the main reason is because the books were released in 2001 and the girls are 14. I was 13 in 2001 so can connect with a lot of the pop culture aspects mentioned throughout the series. Even though the series is based in England I still feel a sense of nostalgia while reading it.

I really love the girls and their friendship. I never had a close knit group of friends like this when I was younger so I liked reading about it. They are a bit too boy crazy for my liking but I really did love this series.

Nesta, Izzie, and Lucy are the main characters. It is in London. There was in internal conflict with Lucy. This book is basically how Lucy was going to try to make it official with Tony. When that didnt work out she was on a search for the right guy for herself.
Text to self connection. Lucy was pretty much in love with Tony. But something went wrong between them. She still totally liked him and was having a very hard time getting over him. I could connect to this because in 6th grade I really, really liked this guy, but since I was moving it wasnt going to work out. It took me a while to get over him.
I gave this book 5 stars. This book is basically the story of my life. I could connect to this book in so many ways.

A book that will drive you way far from boredom. the story is told in a perfect way that can make you picture how they look like and what they're feeling at the moment , everything described brilliantly , I seriously recommend it for teens.

-When summer is finally over , everyone starts to put out plans. Lucy, who was fearing relationships finally stands up and decides to put things straight between her and Tony . But when she starts to feel everything is gonna be perfect Tony lets her down. her Mates busy in " mission match make " but she is suffocated so that becomes down the list for a while. but guess what happens when she goes with her father to a workshop to spend a week of rejuvenating and relaxation , someone turns up to brighten up her life ..

The main character is Lucy! this book is about Lucy having trouble with love. at first she was planning to be with Tony but suddenly Tony didn't want to anymore. Lucy later met Daniel. she thought he was the perfect person but nothing is as good as it sounds. he is a control freak! they broke it and Tony and Lucy was about to be together again. an important lesson was that your friends are still important even though yu have a boyfriend. overall this book was alright since it kept me reading but didn't really have central theme. the book was like watching an episode of a television show.

Lucy finally gets the guts to tell Tony that she likes him and wants to date in a note. Tony has gotten sick of waiting though and tells her he wants to move on to other girls. Lucy heartbroken goes home and tells her friends including Nesta Tony's little sister. She tells Nesta to get the note she left for Tony out of the mailbox, but it's too late and Tony has already got a hold of the letter and read it. Lucy decides to focus on herself and dating other people. She meets Daniel whose sweet and affectionate, but smothers her with his affection. Daniel becomes controlling and Lucy realizes it before she gets in too deep and ends their relationship.

Oh how I loved this one! I've made Lucy's mistake before. I sympathized with her. If Hopkins is good at anything, she's good at creating characters that are relatable (I love Georgia Nicolson, but she's completely and totally unrelatable - impossible lifestyle!). I've mentioned in other reviews about the life lessons she teaches, in this book they're a bit more in your face than usual. Though I applaud Nesta and Izzie for keeping their mouths shut and letting Lucy realize her mistake on her own; that's what a real friend does (otherwise they're acting pretty much like Daniel!). I love this series, deffo recommend!

Well this was one of my favorites, too. I am really excited to read all of Cathy Hopkins's books. This book was about Lucy who don't know if she can trust Tony, her boyfriend who was always flirting with someelse the next minute. Finally they broke up and she met a boy and they became boyfriends and girlfriends. Lucy felt that it wasn't the same kind of love she wanted but at least she have her friends! Friends forever! I think that friends are more important than my boyfriend or whatsoever. Boyfriends can change but friends can't change!

This is another book of the series I have read and I liked this one but not a smuch as the others. In this book all the friends have a love interest except for Lucy. Lucy breaks it off with her friend's brother and meets another boy. But, as everything starts to go good, Lucy's new love interest starts to try and change her and becomes controlling. So, this book is mainly on the "stay true to yourself" theme and to not let a boy control you or ruin your friendships. I recommend this book for girls in teen(14+) and up. Other than that I had a great time reading this book.

Lucy's bummed out, because she and Tony are back off-again and everyone else has a boyfriend. Lucy goes off on a self-discovery weekend with her dad and meets a lovely boy named Daniel. He's also into fashion and designs his own stuff. Then he turns really possesive and keeps trying to change Lucy. And I thought Mates, Dates, and Sleepover Secrets was heavy on the be-true-to-yourself theme. Also preachy on the don't-let-boys-rule-your-life theme.

Lucy is a really good book, from a popular series. This is the 5th. book and a total success. The main character is Lucy, and her friends Izzie, Gina and Charlie. In this story Izzie and Lucy go to a Hippie relaxation camp, where they meet David. He seems to be nice, but a bit full of himself. The story goes on and Lucy as to find, that David is not her type. This story is a great book for girls and fun to read.
