The Rat Queens return to Palisade to find that the world has moved on without them. The tavern is infested with would be heroes, drinking all the ale and getting in all the fights. What's a warrior girl to do?

It's so hard to rate this issue because 1. I hate rating individual issues of comics and 2. it's part one of a three part storyline that as far as I can tell never got finished and was retconned in the next official volume anyway. Honestly there's some funny moments but just for your own continuity sanity I would probably recommend skipping this one.
But I decided to do a short review anyway because there is still one important question that needs answering:
While writing my reviews for the first three volumes of Rat Queens I started to find out a bunch of behind the scenes stuff about the series. Like how the first artist was fired after his arrest for domestic violence, and the second artist left for health reasons. And this is the final issue for the third artist, who left under a cloud of controversy, with her saying she was being pushed out to bring back the first artist despite promises that would never happen, and the writer saying it was for creative differences. So that brought the series to a screeching halt, and during the hiatus it was decided to abandon the storyline that began here. Eventually Rat Queens relaunched with a fourth artist and a new #1 issue.
Sort of sounds like garage band drama.
Since it was decided to exclude this issue from the trade paperbacks and because I'm a completist, I bought a digital copy before reading the fourth book currently on hold for me at the library. It's not much of a story, as most of the main characters return to Palisade shaken from the events of the last volume and ready to party away their bad mood. There are some happy and unhappy reunions with the supporting cast, but nothing much happens until a shocking cliffhanger . . . that is to be forever left hanging (though there is apparently an Easter Egg reference to it in one of the volumes in my future). Overall, this issue is on par with the rest of the series.
3. They're back. They could have go anywhere in the world and they decided to come home. I'm a bit sad we didn't get to see the in between times with them on the ship. I feel as though we missed a lot of the story, but I'm glad to see them back at home and getting together with the old gang. Although it does seem that things aren't what they used to be.
2. Betty and strange happenings. Seems that the mushrooms are helping Betty see what's really going on. Dee's husband, Kiah, seems to being confronted by at least 2 individuals of the 4 person group standing outside. When Betty looks in that direction though you don't see the same individuals... instead you see what looks like the vampires from the movie Priest. Betty isn't the only one thinking things are different. Seems that the whole group is noticing it. Even Braga and Tizi mention that you barely even see any of the townsfolk.... which leads me to my number 1...
1. OMFG.....Orc Dave.... WHAT THE HELL IS Violet doing? I mean like I said in #2 it's probably because of those Priest vampire dudes... but please tell me it isn't so that she killed the real Orc Dave........*sniffles sniffles* *crawls into corner and beginnings to rock back and forth* If I had to take a guess, which is what we will all have to do until the return of this series, is that Orc Dave's *cough* manhood wasn't what she had before and he was sooo different or he didn't have/do something that it tipped her off to the fact that this isn't Orc Dave.
This is a piss poor way to leave a series hanging. One on the beginning of an arc and two with that big of a cliffhanger..... OMG!!! Also, did the story telling just feel a bit off to you. I guess it was just because strange things are happening, they have been gone for a while and we don't know enough. I wish I could rate this higher, but to be fair I think the over all is a 4 but I just don't like how this seemed rushed and thrown together.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Okay, this would have been a 3.5 or 4 star rating, but I have to give it a 5 star rating because of the Vox Machina/Critical Role cameos. Oh, and the cliffhanger ending certainly helps with the rating as well. What sucks though is that the comic went on hiatus after this issue, and the reboots that have been released lately start a whole new story line. We'll never find out the conclusion to the cliffhanger.
I'm excited to see where this is going, and for more Tizzie and Braga! It's not Rat Queens without Hannah, though, so I'm hoping she'll return to the page soon.
A review of the entire series! So uh, be wary of that.
The initial run of Rat Queens is a series that feels like it can be broken up into two very distinct segments. The first is good, comprising issues of 1-10, while the rest, making up issues 11-16 is... not so good. Were I to review them separately I'd give 1-10 a 4 with 11-16 a 2 so I averaged them together for an easy 3/5 for the series.
1-10 are a great murder mystery with various townspeople being assassinated and the titular Rat Queens, a group of beer-swilling assholes go in and out of favor with the town for the various shenanigans they pull while living there. Things come to a head in a great finale in issue 10, and if you want the best experience possible you can just ignore the last page of that issue and take in the first 10 as their own series.
11-16 start a second storyline, and... it just isn't good. You can read it if you want but even the creator himself has disowned most of that content, and specifically said issue 16 isn't going to be reprinted ever if he has anything to say about it. It sets up new storylines for the girls and expounds on osme of Hannah's backstory being a mage along with her father (and even gives an appreciated, though ultimately unnecessary explanation behind her unusual hairstyle) but since this story was never finished it can safely be ignored. When the series began once again in 2017 everything past issue 10 was ignored, and I hope to read that sometime soon. This series is a tough recommend but I'd definitely at least suggest the first 10.
This issue continues the storyline in which Hannah left the Rat Queens behind. After several weeks at sea, the remaining Rat Queens return to Palisade and find it overrun by strangers. Betty tries to sneak off to get mushroom, while Vi can't wait to see Dave... and get him to bed. But once at the tavern, they see a bunch of strangers... a bearded goliath, two half-elven twins, a gnome bard and a cleric gnome with suspicious white hair, a gunslinger, and a half-elven druid... it's Vox Machina!! And Dee find a red haired tough (and sleeveless!) woman accompanied by a bard.. pardon, a chronicler at the bard. He wants nothing more than know all of their stories, but unfortunately they get interrupted in their talk by a brawl starting in the bar because... well, someone brought a bear to the bar! In the meanwhile, Betty finds Braga and Tizzie coming out of the sewers, and notices something is going on with some people in the streets that look like... aliens? Doppelgangers? Even Vi finds something odd about Dave and beheads him... leaving a cliffhanger there that will probably never be resolved because the comic went on hiatus after that and started with some sort of soft reboot because of creative differences. Still, if only for the presence of Vox Machina, this issue is such a curiosity to read, even if both the art got worse and the story leads nowhere yet...
I'm happy I read it, but it is nothing worth spending huge sums for! ;)
2 stars for the cliffhanger ending and unfinished story arc, an extra star for the cameo (the whole reason I bothered getting a hold of this leftover issue). Glad we will be getting more of the Queens though.
I'm kinda sad that [just found out] the series had been put on hiatus, so if anyone knows where the web-comics will be published please let me know because I would love to continue reading.
Should really be a one, but gains one star for Critical Role. Definitely not a strong entry in the Rat Queens and I see why the story line was abandoned/retconned.
Had to read the missing issue, but it truly did not provide any additional context to bridge the original series and the soft reboot. I wish it would have continued from here.
Didn't really enjoy this episode at all. Hannah was not in it which was sad, though Volume 3 Demons shows why. Basically the only reason I read it was because Matt Mercer and Vox Machina made an appearance. I would have rated it lower but Critical Role's appearance brought my score up.
This was another great installment of a great series. I can't wait to see the reboot in a couple of months. I'm hoping it's as good as the originals (and that it actually happens).
I finally caught up and am so very frustrated that this is the end of the print run. It resolves nothing. Violet, Hannah, Dee and Betty all have very unresolved plot lines. I regret reading past #14. (Ok, I don't regret it, but this is a TERRIBLE place to stop!)
Allegedly the reason behind the hiatus/discontinuation/change to web comic is because Wiebe wants to bring back the original artist (who was removed from the series due to accusations of domestic abuse). I don't want to support someone who illustrates a comic book about bad ass women while treating us like garbage.
This was the first comic series that really felt like it was for me and I am deeply saddened that it's puttering out in such an ignoble fashion.
I've been reading the trades, so it's a bit new for me to have to wait for the singles... I have conflicted feelings on this. Like I know that singles are basically like just reading one chapter in a normal book so it's understandable that there won't be a lot of development, but this issue in particular left a lot of loose ends for me, so I really hope the next ones excel.
I'm so used to reading trade paperbacks that it was quite strange to be reading it as a single issue! Right when my interest was really piqued...cliffhanger!! How long must I wait til the next one?? I miss Hannah, but it was super awesome to see the Vox Machina cameo. :)
I have missed these gals, sex, drugs, booze, slaughter and the Daves! Also, WTF! I can't believe I'll have to wait a month to get a clue to what's happening!
