New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray begins a new series—The Amish of Hart County—with this suspenseful tale of a young Amish woman who is forced to move to a new town to escape a threatening stalker. After a stalker went too far, Hannah Hilty and her family had no choice but to leave the bustling Amish community where she grew up. Now she’s getting a fresh start in Hart County, Kentucky…if only she wasn’t too scared to take it. Hannah has become afraid to trust anyone—even Isaac, the friendly Amish man who lives next door. She wonders if she'll ever return to the trusting, easy-going woman she once was.

For Isaac Troyer, the beautiful girl he teasingly called “The Recluse” confuses him like no other. When he learns of her past, he knows he's misjudged her. But as Hannah and Isaac slowly grow closer, they realize that there’s always more to someone than meets the eye.

Just as Hannah is finally settling into her new life, and perhaps finding a new love, more secrets are revealed and tragedy strikes. Now Hannah must decide if she should run again or dare to fight for the future she has found in Hart County.

Shelley Shepard Gray writes the sweetest Amish/Christian romances, and with this first installment of the Amish of Hart County series she's added an element of suspense to the story, too.

However, he also understands the importance of being grateful for God’s gifts, and wonders if they will ever have anything in common.

In the beginning, Hannah seemed to be a bit skittish, and who can blame her? It didn't take long, however, for her to find her inner strength and bravely move on. Of course Isaac was a big help with that! His patience and compassion and willingness to 'go slow' made me love him for Hannah, and I hope to see more of them in future installments of the series!

I've read several of Ms. Gray's Amish romances and have enjoyed every one of them. The characters are such awesome people who are easy to relate to. Whether going through a "crisis of faith" or suffering loss that makes their faith stronger, I always find myself invested in the people and their journey down whatever path life has put them on. So, if you find yourself in the mood for a charming Christian read, be sure to take a peek at Shelley Shepard Gray's stories. You'll be glad you did!

An ARC was provided by Avon Inspire. In appreciation I'm giving them an honest review.

I’m still doing a giddy little happy dance after reading Her Secret.

Why?

Because I changed my mind multiple times as to who I think the title is about. Because this ain’t your grandma’s Amish fiction – it’s a little edgy (in the best ways) while still retaining the sweetness that is a trademark of Gray’s writing. Because the suspense toys with “psychological thriller” status (and i LOVE that). Because the romance is charming and tender.

And because tucked away gently in the pages of this great Amish romance thriller (yes, you read that right) is a message of looking beyond yourself, of realizing that more goes on in life than what directly – or indirectly – affects you, and encouragement for those who may feel alone.

Bottom Line: It is no secret that I love suspense, I love romance, and I love books written by Shelley Shepard Gray. Combine all three? A recipe for a great read. Her Secret nicely sets the foundation for future books in the series, and I’m looking forward to meeting more Amish of Hart County!

This is a story that we hear about in mainstream America, but this takes place with the Amish community, stalking and the horrors that go along with it.
In this book we have the Hilty family leaving their friends and family in Ohio and moving to Kentucky, what a hard time for all in the family. I think moving is not easy for anyone, but with the tight community ties the Amish have, this move must have been devastating for the family, especially the younger members.
When an unstable person threatens another, no matter where they live it seems to affect more than that individual, but all of those around them and their families. I can’t even comprehend the fear that must have gone along with their move, and then?
I did love how this Amish community rallies around those in need, and how the fundraiser seems to pull everyone together.
All through this book I was waiting for the other shoe to drop, and expecting the worse, and now you will need to join me in the page turning.
I received this book through Lit Fuse Publicity Book Tours, and was not required to give a positive review.

MY THOUGHTS
A stalker that a young Amish woman once thought as a friend, has now forced Hannah Hilty and her family to move away to a new town. But things haven't changed as far as the stalker. He moved too and took on a new identity. Hannah and her family think they are safe against this man, but soon they realize he is there and he wants Hannah. Hannah's younger siblings don't like their new home in Hart County, Kentucky and they blame Hannah for having to leave their big farm in a large Amish community. They now live in a small home in a small town. Hannah becomes so afraid that she doesn't trust anyone, doesn't want to leave the house and has become a Recluse, as Isaac Troyer calls her. Isaac is a friendly neighbor and becomes very protective of Hannah. Is there romance in the future? Hannah slowly lets her guard down and becomes very close with Isaac. But the stalker hasn't let go and won't until he has Hannah all to himself. Hannah is a target and her stalker is dangerous. On top of all she is dealing with, she finds out her father is dying. Will Hannah stand up and face things or will she hide forever?

The author gives the reader a charming and yet suspenseful read. It is well written and flows well. Faith is a strong part of this book. She gives good detail of the characters and scenery. The characters are all tied together in one way or another and yet the author doesn't give too many characters where you have trouble keeping track of them. I felt for Hannah and understood why she was so afraid and yet I wanted her stalker to feel the same way. To see what he was doing selfishly to Hannah and those she loved. The author slowly builds the suspense until the stalker finally has Hannah, but what will happen to Hannah? You're given a lot to think about with characters you can connect with. This is a little different take on the Amish than other books I've read. This went outside of the mostly protected lives of the Amish and let the evils of the outside, in. I also loved the way the author brought the Amish community together to face what was happening to one of their own and also to support Hannah and her family. If you like suspense, Amish romance books or just a good clean read, then follow Hannah and those who love her. Remember though that the stalker is out there and Hannah's life is at stake. Will Isaac and Hannah fall in love and live happily ever after or will the stalker win? Read and decide.

I received a copy of this book from the author and Litfuse Publicity and voluntarily decided to review it.

If you have read books from this author than you know that this is a darker approach to the books readers have enjoyed about the Amish. Although, don't fear as this new side is still ones that readers will enjoy. Another great read from author, Shelley Shepard Gray.

Again, I was able to slip right in and fall in love with the characters and this new location, Hart County. It was nice to see Hannah's family rallying behind her in support of what she was dealing with. Her stalker was someone to be fearful of. Yet, with the love and support of her family, Issac, and God; Hannah was able to find strength. Speaking of Issac, he comes from a good family. His and Hannah's relationship was kind and sweet. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Her Secret is the first book in The Amish of Hart County series by Shelley Shepard Gray. This suspenseful novel, while a very good read, left me wanting more. With larger print and at 247 pages, I felt that this read more as a novella than as a full length novel.

What I did love about this story was that it breaks the mold of idealistic Amish books that so plague the genre. Mystery and suspense is a new and refreshing take for the genre and I’m glad to see authors branching out from the typical girl meets boy, marries and has a bunch of babies plot.

I simply felt that the conclusion to this novel felt rushed. One moment you had Hannah in the hands of a twisted stalker and later that day she is rescued. I know that within this genre authors feel the need to be careful of not including too much violence or twisted plots so maybe that is why the story was quickly wrapped up. However, I felt that an opportunity to make my heart pound with suspense was missed.

It’s not like I want to see a character be abused or unhappy but when I pick up a suspense novel, I’d really like a few moments where I gnaw my nails and worry about the protagonist.

Overall I give this a solid 3.5 stars. I enjoyed the writing and felt that it was refreshing and new. I just wish I hadn’t felt so rushed through an anticlimactic finish for what promised to be a great suspense.

Her Secret is not your typical Amish story. With a heroine whose family has had to relocate because of a stalker, it was definitely not a story I had seen done before. It kept me turning the pages!

I really enjoyed this novel. I could feel Hannah’s nervousness as she went through her days, all due to the events from the past year. The story was full of secrets, frustations, anger, suspicions, and fears, yet had a beautiful romance that wove its way through the pages.

I thought the author did a very good job at showing how an Amish family might deal with this type of stalker situation. There were things they handled well and things they didn’t. It felt fresh and real. I definitely recommend it to fans of romantic suspense.

I picked up this book thinking it was an Amish thriller, yet somehow not realizing it’s technically Christian lit, which isn’t my genre. My low rating doesn’t have to do with that, though, because I did read the whole thing, and I usually don’t whenever I realize I’ve accidentally picked up CL, but for such an interesting concept, which was what drew me in in the first place, it’s all very one dimensional. From the characters to the plot to the writing style, there isn’t much dynamic, and it’s not as good as I’d hoped it to be.

If you like thrillers and very quick reads, then this might be some decently entertaining summer beach reading, but ultimately, I think there are better books out there.

This is an unusual Amish suspense and romance tale. A young woman moves with her family to a Kentucky Amish community, as they are hoping to leave behind a stalker. For plot purposes we know right away that they will not succeed.

While stalkers can be very manipulative and convincing, I did not see the method employed by this man as likely to work. I also thought that the young woman would have been better off to go out with lots of young people rather than hide away indoors. The setting is well realised and I would read more by this author.

I read an ARC from Net Galley and Fresh Fiction. This is an unbiased review.

Her Secret is about an ordinary Amish girl living with her family going about her life until one day she meets a man that will not take no for an answer. And so begins his manipulations and his fearful control over her well-being including that of her family as well.

Hannah’s entire family up and moves from Ohio to Kentucky after Hannah’s stalker takes things a little too far with his photographs. Trying to come out of her shell that fear has locked her into, she begins to timidly make new friends in her new hometown. As she begins to open up and live again she is faced with problems at home with her brother and sister and their resentment towards her for the move. Her parents are no help as they drop another bombshell on the family that only increases the distance between each of them till all five seem to be living separate lives.

That is really what stood out to me in this novel. That this seemingly close-knit family let secrets keep them apart. And how once the secrets were no longer kept in hiding, understanding, love, and grace came pouring in. Forgiveness played a strong role as well.

This was a little bit of a creepy read for me as Hannah was always looking over her shoulder and too many times let fear paralyze her. I enjoyed watching her and her family come to terms not only with opening up to each other, but becoming part of their new community and learning the lesson that we sometimes need other people to help us carry our burdens.

I received a copy of the book for free through Litfuse. I was not required to post a positive review and views and opinions expressed are my own.

My Review:

The love of a new series goes without saying especially if the author is Shelley Shepard Gray. She is phenomenal and she has many excellent books as well as fans that will back me up on that statement. The reason I think that she writes so well is that she leaves no stone unturned. You can see this in her latest, Her Secret. Her Secret is a little different. I can say now that the cover did not appeal to me but it did make me think for a split second that I was reading non fiction.

This story of Hannah Hilty and her family will scare the daylights out of you. Poor Hannah is now a petrified young girl afraid to turn a corner much less anything else. She has a stalker that is unwilling to give up so her family do what they can to make their little girl safe. Hannah has a lot going on with her as the reader learns more about her and the Troyer family will play a roll in their lives but how?

Great writing and it will leave you spellbound!

The cover and the title made me think this could be some sort of psychological thriller but it's really more of an Amish romantic suspense story. Overall, this was an easy & fast, single-sitting read (noting that this fits right in the middle of my comfort zone).

The Hilty family moved away from the busy Ohio town to the middle of nowhere Kentucky town. Hannah, the eldest at 22, was being stalked by an Englischer and as it seems the police was unable to help, they moved to as remote a place they could. Jenny and Ben weren't happy with the move or with Hannah and their parents seemed to be different and distracted. It took a chance encounter with Isaac Troyer and his insulting comment for Hannah to start noticing her surroundings. Her terror of being watched all the time was all consuming yet there were other things and people she needed to pay attention to.

The Hilty parents were just awful!! But the Troyer family full made up for that. I really liked how Hannah's fears and concerns especially as a victim was brought up in this novel. And especially the contrast of the reactions from the Hiltys and the Troyers to this same issue. The developing romance, slow as it was, between Isaac and Hannah was also very sweet. Plus the twist on the mystery itself -wow, that was actually a very scary thought for me as a parent but it was a clever twist.

Rating as a movie: PG-13

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️🌚

My thoughts: 📖 Page 135 of 247 Ch. 16 - Okay no my favorite but we'll see where it goes. So far, The plot is good The developments are crazy. I was hoping to be done but after dozing off I'm throwing in the towel for the night.

I don't know if I'm out of the mood but this book was just okay for me. It just seemed choppy and out of pocket emotionally. The plot was good the delivery just seemed off for some reason. Towards the end, it got better but I wasn’t loving it, so, it stayed at 3 stars, which is still good just not great. I have the next 2 books so hopefully the story improves.

Recommend to others: Sure. This is a good story, set in the real world.

Her Secret by Shelley Shepard Gray is an Amish romantic mystery and I really enjoyed it. It is the first book of The Amish Of Hart County which promises to be a cracking series.
Her Secret has many themes including that of secrets. Secrets are never a good idea. They may become burdensome. Secrets need to be brought out into the light and burdens shared. "Even if the truth hurt, it was always better in the end."
There is the topic of anxiety. Anxiety can ruin our lives. Anxiety can trap us into a prison of our own making. Anxiety links to worry. "It ain't a good idea to go around worrying about the future." God tells us to worry about nothing and to pray about everything. Fear is the opposite of faith. "Faith is believing when you don't have proof." Faith is handing our fears over to the One who has conquered death.
The novel has the theme of friendship and families. The Amish are a close knit group, warm and welcoming. The reader 'feels' this warmth reaching out from the pages of the novel.
The book has a mystery to be solved. The reader gets caught up in the action. There is an air of menace as the mystery involves stalking. Shelley Shepard Gray manages to capture this air and convey it to the reader who finds themselves becoming anxious on behalf of the characters.
Within the novel, the characters are all wonderfully drawn. The reader is able to empathise with the characters who burst into life within the book and into the reader's heart.
A wonderful start to a new series. I cannot wait for more.

A different kind of Amish book from Shelley but I did like it.
I think the style of her writing is different as well and I didn't put the book down until it was finished.
The characters were well thought out and I enjoyed how Shelley can make them come alive in her books!
I know this probably won't make any sense but even though I enjoyed the story I really couldn't connect with the people in the book. Maybe its because I've never been in that situation and hope I never am.
But, I did like where they prayed to God and so did Hannah in her situation.
Hannah didn't ask for what happened to her. But, then none of us really does. Sometimes we're in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Even then I believe God is with us no matter what.
I checked this book out from my public library.

When I did start reading Her Secret, I panicked because it was an Amish-themed book. *Why did I sign up to read this? There's a glut of Amish books on the market. I've read most of them. What does this one have to offer?*

Well ... I didn't need to worry, because I read Her Secret non-stop over the next day. Carried it around with me on my iPad). Snuck in "just 5 more minutes" anywhere I could.

Engaging, mysterious, fast-paced, and well-developed, Her Secret will keep you guessing until the last page. It truly does have a lot to offer, and that is a pleasant surprise. Absolutely recommended.

This was a mystery and a romance. I liked both story lines. The romance was sweet, and I liked both Hannah and Issac. Her brother, Ben, and her sister, Jenny, improved as the story progressed. The mystery was one that I haven't read much of, but I know that there are quite a few books out there involving stalkers.

Compelling. Chilling. Inspiring.

Shelley Shepard Gray knows how to dig deep into the hearts of her characters, exposing weaknesses and strengths in equal measure as she forces them along a complex path of self-discovery.

Her Secret reveals the raw grittiness of every day people. Yes, this is an Amish story -- but not the typical kind. The Hilty family is as naturally dysfunctional as any Englisch equivalent. Each family member faces common challenges in unique ways. None of them do it perfectly. There were times I wanted to box ears and rattle teeth. And just as often I wanted to hug them tight and whisper comforting platitudes. It's the kind of story that seeps into your bones until you become a part of it.

Thriller-style suspense tempered by tender romance promises a page-turner of a read.

Her Secret is Shelley Shepard Gray's first book in a new series, an Amish story with a touch of suspense.

If you read a lot of Amish fiction, you may find the setting of this series to be a bit unfamiliar. The story is mostly set in Hart County, Kentucky, away from the typical Amish settings in places like Lancaster County and Holmes County. As Shelley has the Hilty family settle into their new home, she brings in details about this unfamiliar area.

The plot of the story has some intriguing twists that keep the story moving pretty well, although it does get a little bogged down at times. Most of the characters are interesting and develop well throughout the story. The suspense, love story, and faith mix well with the other elements to make for an enjoyable read for fans of Amish fiction.

Thanks to Litfuse Publicity Group for providing a copy of Her Secret. I was glad to share my thoughts in this review.

Terrified by an escalating stalking incident, Hannah Hilty's family moves from their established residence in Ohio to a more remote Amish community in Hart County, Kentucky. There Hannah begins to let go of her paranoia, largely due to the kind attention of a handsome neighbor. Unfortunately, other family secrets have been tucked away, and just when things couldn't get worse, they do.

Hannah and her family learn how precious indeed is the gift of life.

First, the disclaimer. "I was provided a free copy of this book. All opinions are my own." That done, HER SECRET is the beginning of a new series by Ms. Gray set in Hart County, Kentucky. It is supposed to be a romantic suspense, and it is heavier on the romance than the suspense, but she has a good start. I had no idea that some of the things in the story were as they were until they were revealed. And while some of the events seemed to be contrived and a bit unrealistic, it did end with me reading with bated breath, and on the edge of my seat for awhile.

If you like Ms. Gray's books, Amish or historical, and like romantic suspense this book would be good. Ms. Gray has quite a gentle, non-intrusive voice, and that didn't change any in this new book.

I had to know what was happening, so I didn’t mind missing sleep as I was right in the moment with Hannah Hilty and Isaac Troyer, the hero and heroine, along with their families and other secondary characters.

Hannah lived an isolated life or was always was with someone because of the fear of being stalked even after moving to Kentucky from Ohio. Hannah was so taken back when she was called “a recluse” after she finally was able to venture out alone for a walk, in the rural area where the family had settled. My heart broke for Hannah and all she was going through along with her family. Hannah’s secret was not the only one that caused action in this astonishing story. How would she be able to move forward when fear was so great? Did moving really solve Hannah’s problem? How will Isaac Troyer and his family play a role in assisting Hannah and her family? Who else brought secrets with them to Kentucky?

Shelley Shepard Gray never fails to craft stories where readers are in the moment with the characters and all that is transpiring. The descriptive words had my mind seeing the scenes vividly, along with my emotions right there whether it was a painful tragic moment or a joyous celebration. The love, acceptance, and caring for the Hilty family members and others in the small rural Amish community demonstrated God’s love and their deep faith. Her Secret gives a new perspective what is truly important in life –the small things. “Life is made up of hugs and smiles, tears and disappointment. Of ice cream and grilled cheese and pesky bugs and rays of sunshine.” (Location 3857 of 4004 digital book).

I’m looking forward for the sequel to see what is happening with these new family members as they move forward in their new community.

I received a complimentary digital copy of Her Secret from Edelweiss by HarperCollins. I was not required to write a positive review but have expressed my honest thoughts.

One of my favorite Amish authors brings a new series and it has captured my heart. I loved Hannah and her family, and so appreciated the way this book was written. This family and the town they have adopted as their own bring a promise of an amazing series and I cannot wait for the remainder of the books to be released. *I received an advanced copy of this book*
