Another new author for me, this book was a great read, and as soon as I finished it I bought book 2 and 3 in the series.

A serial killer is leaving dismembered bodies on trains for passengers to find and he will stop at nothing to get his message across. Former Detective Martin Rhodes spent ten years in prison for murder. After travelling from town to town in search of employment, he arrives in the City of Bridgeton. Rhodes hopes to re-start his life and to leave his past behind him.

Special Agent Jo Pullinger is searching for a man who killed her father over twenty years ago. Jo is suffering from a heart condition which she hides from the world. A series of dead bodies on the trains lead Rhodes and Jo to end up searching for the same person.

Two great main characters, and the author builds the tension following the two stories and the two characters, with great tension and suspense, with some brutal action and a nasty villain.

Jo Pullinger also has some great characters in her team that add some humour to the story, and the two stories unfold so well to a conclusion that builds the tension, with a last sentence of the story took me straight to Amazon.co.uk to buy number two and three in the series.

I really enjoyed the two main characters, they both had a substance to them, great story and gripping ending.

Four stars.

I liked this book because I am intrigued by Martin, his past and how he will move forward. I'm a little disappointed in the story because we didn't get enough of Martin. Perhaps this is the set up book for him - so I will try book 2. IMHO, this book is a sad commentary on the police force - the dysfunction of processes, the dysfunction of employees, judgemental behaviour, burnout, and lack of character in some of the employees. The thriller/suspense aspect with the serial killer was ok - and the book is sort of a cliffie . I hope we see Martin getting on with his life and doing what he does best in the rest of the series.

Martin Rhodes was once a police officer until he took the law into his own hands and killed the man responsible for a young boy's death. He spent ten years in prison for it. Once he gets out he's looking for a place to settle and chooses Bridgton. Unfortunately, a serial killer is murdering people and leaving the bodies on subway trains. One victim's hands were cut off, one's eyes were gouged out, another had their tongue missing. All of them had cryptic messages carved into their bodies, most likely aimed at law enforcement.

Jo Pullinger is the detective assigned to the case. Jo has a heart condition that she desperately tries to conceal from others. She refuses to have surgery because she'd be off work too long and she has too many unsolved cases to worry about at the moment. Her ailment makes her vulnerable as she never knows when she might suddenly get short of breath or become too weak to carry on. Even so, she persists.

She and Martin end up working the Train Killer case together. In the meantime, Martin makes a new friend who lives in his building. Teenager Tess, her mother and her mother's boyfriend all live together. Martin comes home one day to find Tess sitting on his steps. She tells him she's hiding from her mom when, in truth, it's the boyfriend who has her freaked out. Martin agrees to let Tess sit in his car where she can lock the doors and feel safe. He'd let her stay in his apartment if he wasn't sure that would get him in trouble no matter how innocent his intentions. Tess ends up hiding in his trunk when he uses his car to do a bit of sleuthing. Once her presence is discovered, she actually assists him a time or two. I get the feeling Tess will be around in some future books. I enjoyed the relationship she's developing with Martin and excited to see where it goes. Maybe a father/daughter type thing.

I really liked the characters here. I liked the fact Martin was flawed but that his big weakness was really him just wanting justice for a little boy who couldn't obtain it for himself. Martin was basically a good man and deserved a better life than what he was handed. Sadly, it was his decision that altered the path he was on and sent him into a different direction entirely. Now he's trying to make the best of things. Strangely for him, it's given him a new career path that should prove interesting.

He and Pullinger paired up nicely in this one and I look forward to seeing more of her in the future. Very good first start to a series Ican't wait to sink my teeth into!

I love Thomas Fincham's stories and series.

This is the first in the Martin Rhoades series. Martin is an ex-policeman with a fractured past and the opening chapters see him leaving jail after serving 10 years for murder, trying ti figure out what is next. It doesn't take him too long to find himself employed again using the skills honed years ago as a cop.

This book is a worthwhile ride

I really hate to say this, but this book wasn't thrilling or suspenseful.
Biggest disappointment, I've never read a law enforcement book where the FBI agents were TSTL. Martin and Tess were the only interesting things, but I just can't read #2.

This is the 2nd book I have read by this author, the 1st being The Silent Reporter, and he fails to disappoint. Once again the plot is not too long ands drawn out, it is well developed and keeps you guessing. And the characters are well developed with loveable personalities.

A very good read, totally looking forward to what happens with the characters in the rest of the stories!

The only downside to the book is a few grammatical errors.

Good book a lot of grammatical errors

This book was a page turner and kept me reading. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is into a good mystery. The only reason I gave this book 3 stars was there were a lot of grammatical errors. I would be reading a sentence and I would have to add a word for the sentence to make sense, this really bugged me.

Good read

What a great way to start a new series. Martin is believable with just the right amount of witt and roughness . I can't wait for the next one. Do both women stay in his life and does he open that agency? Guess we will have to wait and see.

Kept my intrest

Hi
Re-read the last chapter several times, but can't decide why Ellen was executed..is it to show the master is not finished? Odd ending.....liked all other characters and their conclusion.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written PI thriller book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great PI thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. To be continued. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

But I Won't Close Mine

EXCELLENT!! A page turning, well thought out plot and storyline, with a ridiculously scary mindset!! WOW!! Killing people and disembodiment based upon the offense they were judged as committing. then to display them for such a large number of people to witness the gruesomeness of the murders was just twisted on all levels!! This story was extremely easy to follow even when I had to put it down for days and return to it. It never list it's momentum and then ran right into a cliffhanger!! I didn't see it coming and particularly with Ellen being the next victim!! Though very much aware of the fast that the identity of "the master" had not been revealed I still didn't see the cliff hanger coming!! I realize the character of the former detective had spent 10 years of his life in prison, I still liked him!! Shame on me, but I can see myself purchasing the next installment immediately and hoping for a good outcome for him, I know, but what can I say? Get this book!! That's what I will say......

A lot of grammatical errors. The author wrote “had had” in a sentence at least three different times throughout the book - very lazy. The book also ends rather abruptly which I was not a fan of.

I was also astonished at the rampant sexual harassment by Chris the (male) FBI agent the most, and also by a male police officer (who wants everyone to feel sorry for him bc he’s too busy sleeping with everyone but his wife, so she’s leaving. He’s also not properly investigating his cases bc of it all, and is mad he gets in trouble for it. But it’s everyone else’s fault except his 🙄).

I wish Rhodes was actually in the book more. If the focus was more on him and Jo, minus the awful characters surrounding her, I think I would’ve liked it more. Having a better editor would’ve helped immensely as well. I probably won’t continue the series.

Something about this doesn't sit right with me

Ok so overall this isn't a bad read. Rhodes and Pullinger are likeable, the killer misguided and ultimately a puppet and the plot itself - ever thickening. Sad to say something about the story just didn't feel right/work for me. The problem is that I'm not exactly sure what. Maybe it was the 'old black and white detective movie' way that the story played out. Though this style of writing has never bothered me before. Maybe it's the Journalist's, Ellen Sheehan's, attitude towards the murders and killer that deep down bothered me... even though to be fair her reaction isn't something other wordly for someone who is trying to be ahead in the news industry. I did however like the plot and so would read on if for nothing else, to see how it progresses in the next books of the series.

Former Detective Martin Rhodes is hired to "consult" on a murder case by the father of the young man who was murdered. Martin struggles with the limits to his investigation, which are the consequences of his actions that sent him to prison for 10 years.

Special Agent Jo Pullinger is investigating a series of Murders where dead bodies are left on the train for commuters to find. Jo struggles with a genetic heart condition and the desire to catch the person who murdered her father 20 years prior.

For most of the book, Jo and Martin's investigations are in very different paths. Jo and Martin are both compelling characters that are well-developed. The pacing of the book is nonstop (since the POV alternates between Jo and Martin, there's no time for slowing down).

Kind of annoying. I was interested in Rhodes' character and story and the development of the bond building between him and the neighbor but the activity w/the FBI kept interrupting. I felt the FBI was presented in a slightly bumbling way and I find that frustrating because c'mon - it's the FBI. Well trained, smart individuals come out of Quantico don't they? Maybe it was the short chapters alternating between Rhodes and Jo. Felt like it would have read better or developed better with maybe two chapters each before switching.

This read fairly quickly and since I was interested in Rhodes' character I will try out the next in the series at some time.

While I enjoyed this book, I do not think that Martin Rhodes was the main character in this story as he was in less than half the book. It was more an entourage of people who were of utmost importance to the story and the solving of the main mystery. I did love the character development of Martin, Jo,and Tess. I am interested to see how the author will get around Martin's record and conviction so that he can legally solve more mysteries and make a living at it. Also how will Tessa and Jo be involved. It was nice that there were so many different dramas and mysteries going on since it brought some variety to the plot. Overall I am intrigued to read the next book.

interesting

I have questions, but in the best I want to know more way. Martin is a character like no other and I loved his approach to helping the father and then his neighbors daughter. Jo is intriguing and I wonder how or if they will continue to cross each other’s path solving crimes and cases. The office dynamic for Jo and her colleagues was weird but funny and the heart issue has me waiting for that shoe/moment to drop! I flew through the book and can’t wait for the next book especially since I was not expecting Ellen’s cliffhanger and I want to know more about the man they mentioned at the birthday party and the cold case serial killer

A good mystery, but there were a little too many stories going on at the same time for my taste, especially when the reader had to go from one to the other without any idea why. In the end it all pretty much came together, and I was glad for that.

The mystery centers on a series of strange murders. The characters are pretty much convincing, but the behavior of some is hard to understand. A little more background information would have been helpful.

The book was overall easy to read and didn't take very long. It's one of the better mysteries I have read recently.

Quite a thrilling read!

In a word, WOW! To say that this book keeps you positively riveted would simply not do it justice. I actually felt tired at the end from keeping track of all the little twists and turns combined with how incredibly tense I felt. No matter what the nature of the characters seem to imply about the plot line, circumstances are not usually what they seem. A worthwhile read!

Martin Rhodes, ex-detective, ex-convict, arrives in Bridgeton hoping for a new start. But where to begin. At what he knows best, solving crimes for payment.
Meanwhile a killer is leaving bodies on trains and will not stop until his message is received. That investigation is being lead by FBI agent Jo Pullinger.
These two cases run through the book. An enjoyable read and of the two main characters I liked Rhodes the best and hope to read more about him.

Kept me on the edge of my seat

Former police detective released from prison after killing a kid, but it was an accident but he served his time. Now he is contacted to find the killer of his son. Because he needs the money, he takes the case and with the help of a teen things really keep getting more dangerous. It is really neat the way this and another group looking for a serial killer intertwine. This book will keep you up at ote?,

I really enjoyed this story, even though it doesn't have a true ending, yet. The editing is clean and the plot is suspenseful with a good pace. I did find myself skimming a tad through the FBI parts just to get back to Martin and the teenager parts, which I found a lot more enjoyable. It was nice the way the author brings the parts together at the end. A good story that has me wanting to read more by this author.

I really liked this book and author. Martin is a former homicide detective until he took the law into his own hands. Now he is jobless and trying to start over in a new town when a serial killer starts leaving bodies with parts of their body missing and messages craved into the bodies. Now Martin gets caught up in finding who is doing this before he strikes again. Once you start need to finish this book. Would read this author again.

It was OK. While main plot might be interesting but nothing too in depth - who is this mysterious sponsor to kill people? How killer is managing to drag people to his secret place under train tracks and nobody notices? Different from book description both agent Jo and ex detective do not meet until the very end. Shallow characters, not too many twists. Also - writing style - feels like author is bored by his own work. Not for me.

My first book of Thomas Fincham ! Plot is good. Martin Rhodes looks promising ! Few questions bothering like - why these gruesome killings, who was that surgeon ? Why Ellen was murdered ?? Even though the narration will keep u hooked.. Disappointment comes the way story ends ! Dunno about its sequel !

Great plot, great characters, great ideas. Would love to continue reading this series and author.
But I cannot. The writing style constantly made me feel like I was reading a grade school primer, and it was overwhelmingly distracting. I'll have to forever wonder who the mastermind is behind all the mayhem.
