The Midnight Society is the first book in The Midnight Chronicles series of young adult urban fantasy novels. If you like original butt-kicking heroines, fast-paced fantasy action, and unpredictable time travel twists, then you’ll love Rhonda Sermon’s refreshing, entertaining series starter.
The Midnight Society was originally released as Timesurfers. This book has a new name, new cover and additional content.
Rhonda Sermon lives in the mostly sunny Perth, Western Australia with her husband and two children. Her debut young adult fantasy novel The Midnight Society was a finalist in the Young Adult category and overall runner up in the The Strongest Start 2012 Contest hosted by TheNextBigWriter.com. On the good days, she adores writing, on the challenging days, it's still awesome. Her two ragdoll cats can often be found helpfully walking over her keyboard, chasing her mouse or generally complaining loudly about the lack of priority their needs are being given. She's a big Harry Potter fan, loves everything the talented Cassie Clare writes and her fav Aussie author is Jessica Shirvington. Her tween and teen children read ALL the time so she is always on the lookout for new and exciting books.
I recieved an eARC copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
PLOT : this book was super fast paced and the action literally kicked off right from the beginning! I loved the time travel espects of it as well as the world building. I think overall, the plot definitely hooked me and I did not feel bored at any point while reading the book :) I also feel that the author did a great job in explaining all the time travel aspects in the book as I feel that it's not something easy to write about, considering there is quite abit of science behind it.
CHARACTERS : I think I pretty much liked all of the characters! they all have their own unique traits which makes it interesting to read about them and get to know each of their personalities. tbh, the main character Cate did get a little whiny at times but she's still pretty alright!
ROMANCE : GUYSSSS omg Cate and Austin are just adorable. Like, really adorable <3 I'm very excited to see how their relationship is going to progress in the sequel!!
In conclusion, this was a really great sci-fi and time travel read! definitely pick this book up if the genres appeal to you and I promise, you won't regret it :)
I found this book through Twitter. And was excited to read it because of the time travel aspect. Unfortunately I did not enjoy it.
The book for the most part was bland. I wasn't connected to any of them, I didn't feel their friendship or the romance.
The time travel was really bad. Despite not having any time travel books in my shelf (except for All Our Yesterdays) I am well versed on time travel. Through comics. This was the authors own version of time travel. It had magic and was unique. But I didn't like it at all. It confused me so I couldn't really enjoy the plot. It felt like the author was trying to make time travel unique by over complicating it. This is why I avoid most time travel books.
All in all I didn't enjoy this book. I don't recommend it.
Thank you to the author for providing me with an Digital ARC in exchange for a honest review.
I was really excited to read to read this book. The synopsis sounded great and since the author was a fellow Australian, it made things for me personally all the bit better. When I began reading the book, I found the storyline to be really captivating, interesting and overall really enjoyable to read. The story never had a dull moment for me and was written really well. I really enjoyed how the world building was done. Even though it was written in modern time, there were so many different aspects that might be overlooked that were done really well.
I really loved the concept of time travel during this book. Often during time travel books, we see the characters travelling to the future and the past with little change when they go back to their present day. I really liked how there were different groups, wanting two very different things. You got to see the difference each day when the past was changed. I liked how real life events such as the sinking of the Titanic were used to show how the past impacts our future for the worst but also for the best. This concept also added a touch of humour especially at the beginning when the timesurfers’ minds would be left untouched after an event change leading to a lot of confusion and humour. I also really enjoyed the different “powers” that different characters possessed. The different concepts in this book really added to the book being really unique.
The characters in this book were written really well. The main character Cate is an amazing, kick-ass character that you cant help but love. I did find it odd about how she had to have a boyfriend when she was trying to blend into the community though. I really enjoyed learning about each character as the book went along. There were so many twists and turns that were unexpected when it came to the characters. Unfortunately, the only thing I can fault is that I found it hard to connect to the characters in the book. I did enjoy reading about them but I cant say that I really connected to them. Saying that, a slightly younger audience would most likely connect with these characters compared to audience which are adults. The way you connect with a character really depends on your own experience and I feel like many would be able to connect with these characters. Even though I was unable to connect to the characters, it did not hinder my experience of reading the book.
Overall, this book was a action-packed, fast paced and humorous novel that would definitely appeal to a young teen audience. While I did really enjoy this book, I did find it hard to connect to the characters on a personal base but for a younger audience, I feel like this shouldn’t be a problem. This book was really well written and the author should be commended on this. I’m really looking forward to the Sequel called The Midnight Elites which should be released in December this year!
** Thank you to the author and The Book Squad for sending me an eARC in return for an honest review.
Well, I finally finished the book. Yay for me!!! This wasn't really the book's fault to be honest. I have just been busy with Uni assignments :)
I really liked the concept and overall feel of the story. It starts out with 15 year old Cate who lives under Witness Protection with her Mum and younger brother. One day on her way home from the Mall, she comes across a group of Timesurfers and finds everyone at the bus stop frozen like statues. On discovering her new abilities, she finds herself sucked into a on going war between two factions and finds out that she plays a key role. Which side will she ultimately choose in order to save her family?
From the very start, this book just pulls you in. It is pretty fast paced but the way in which it is written, you don't find yourself facing many plot holes. I really liked the descriptions of both the Orders of Timesurfers and the magic system in place is quite intricate. There are a lot of rules and each part is explained well. The plot delivers a lot of curveballs. I was left reeling from each revelation. The level of treachery and deception is woven in really well and many things are revealed first to the reader. So you see the through the lies even if characters are unaware of the reality. This book really straddles the fine line of what is right and wrong. Everything is not as clear cut as it appears.
The characters in the novel were really well developed. Each one has their flaws. Cate was an awesome MC. She is snarky and feisty. I love a bad ass girl. She navigates her new reality with a clear mind. I liked seeing the relationships she had with the other characters. Her bond with Eve is really endearing. I think as far as best friends go, Eve does score high. While her relationship with Austin really gave me the feels. There was a lot of humour in their interactions which gave me the giggles. On the other hand, I found her friendship with Jonah quite interesting. I am glad that Rhonda didn't make it a love triangle. I found that so refreshing. I would like to mention that for a YA novel, the language was a little mature. But it didn't bother me so much.
The villians in the story are also highly complex. As I said, you don't really know which side is on the right. There were many times when I found myself trying to unravel certain things and connect the dots. I think this lends a wonderful air of mystery and engages the reader. So you don't feel like an outside spectator but like you are actually a part of the story.
Overall, I would say that this was an excellent start to the series. I enjoyed every minute of this story. It kept me entertained throughout. It had the right mix of romance, betrayal, intrigue and action (I really got a 'Hunger games' vibe towards the end of the book). I would recommend this to anyone who loves YA and fantasy novels. You are definitely in for a treat :)
*i received a free ebook from the author in exchange for an honest review of her book*
I LOVED this book and i cannot wait to read the rest of the series as it comes out because things are just starting to get interesting and crazy that i really wanna have the next book so i can continue on.
The start of the book was a little slow for me to get into and i was also confused at the beginning because things weren't making sense to me at all but once i got over that bump the story really picked up and i flew through the rest of the book and was able to finish it on my third sitting. I also like where the direction of where the story is heading and cannot wait to see where the author takes this series next, i have so many things in my head so i hope they get included into the next book!.
Some things i did see coming and were predictable but i didn't take anything away on how wonderful this book was so i'm grateful for that. Cate was a very kick-ass and bad-ass character and i loved hearing from her perspective she grew from the beginning of the book and continues to grow and i can't wait to see where Rhonda takes the character next.
each character in the story was very interesting and unique to me they were all different and very relatable for me to get invested into the story. I liked Cate and her best friend Eve and how they interacted with each other. The Cate and Austin relationship was written very well and i can't wait to see where it goes in the next book.
This book was a story filled with magic and time travel with a badass main lead that leaves you wanting more and this book is also written by an australian author what more could you ask for?
Rhonda Sermon’s The Midnight Society, the first book in the Midnight Chronicles, is a book that has interested me for quite some time. Witness protection programmes? Magic? Time travel? Check yes to my interest in all these things. It sounded like a book I would love, the perfect book for me.
Unfortunately, I found the book rather difficult to get through. It was an interesting idea, but I could not connect with the characters and the events – nor the way the story was being told, if I’m honest. A part of me wanted to know more, but a bigger part of me didn’t care much at all. I’m sure many will enjoy this one, but for me it wasn’t what I had wanted.
I think my biggest issue is that I got hung up on certain factors. There was plenty going on, and I found some of the things required too much suspension of belief. I know it’s fantasy, but I found myself getting caught up in elements related to the witness protect programme extremely early on, and from there my nit-picking got worse. This, of course, reflects badly on me and not the book – and yet it stopped me from becoming truly invested.
A fun idea, for sure, but it wasn’t delivered in the way I had hoped.
I would like to thank the author for providing me with a free ebook copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
"When you’re fighting for your life, or your family’s life, you do what you have to. You fought for your life today with all the resources at your disposal. You create and command the dead.”
‘The Midnight Society’ by Rhonda Sermon is the first installment in what is to become a new YA series. The story revolves around Cate, a girl who is in witness protection following a horrific kidnapping. Throughout the story we are introduced to a multitude of characters, many of which are known as “Timesurfers”, individuals possessing magical powers and the ability to travel back through time. What follows is essentially a good VS evil tale with some refreshing, modern twists.
One thing which was really well done in this novel was the plot twists. There were so many surprises packed into these pages, however it got to the point where there were so many twists that I actually stopped being surprised by them. Despite being slightly overdone, the turns this story took were, for the most part, very effective and well executed (except perhaps for that little Polka Dot revelation!).
The characters had very complex and well written back-stories, but their actually personalities felt a bit forced and cliche to me. Especially Cate, who I personally felt seemed like a much younger character than she was, I couldn’t help imagining her as a younger teen, especially with the clip-in rainbow hair extensions as I don’t know of anyone older than 13 who wears them. I think that the reason the characters came across this way was because of the dialogue. It did feel quite forced in parts, and some of the phrases used did not suit the way modern teenagers speak at all. However, I still liked the characters for the most part; but Jonah is certainly my favourite as he is by far the most mysterious.
The time traveling concept; whilst slightly confusing at times, was still very thought out and well done in my opinion. I would love to see more of the Timesurfers adventures in future books. I got a slight Hunger Games vibe toward the end, and I don’t know that this worked very well with the story.
Overall, ‘The Midnight Society’ was an enjoyable read and I was very glad to get the chance to support an Australian author. I think I might have enjoyed it more had I read it when I was a bit younger, but nonetheless it was an easy read and quite good for a first book! Whilst I probably wont reread this book, I do look forward to book two and seeing where Sermon takes us! I recommend to those of you looking for a relatively quick, easy and interesting read!
I originally read this book when it was published as Timesurfers. I absolutely loved the story then and i LOVE it even more now as The Midnight Society. I believe Rhonda went above and beyond bringing us a more polished version of Timesurfers. To say that TMS is a "great read" is an understatement. As well as being highly entertaining, overflowing with witty one liners and jammed pack full of action TMS keeps you guessing up until the very last page. I love that Sermon took an overused and clichéd subject such as time travel and made it into a uniquely written and original story. I also adore how thought provoking it is, while exploring whether being "good" or "bad" is really as black and white as it seems and how one can't exist without the other. It was so refreshing to see a main character such as Cate be a fierce badass who can hold her own, instead of your typical run of the mill teenage girl waiting for her knight in shining armour to come save the day. Sermon did a wonderful job creating a whole new world for us bookworms to explore and enjoy and with an amazing cliffhanger ending i eagerly await book 2
Still at a high 5/5 stars!! Totally not biased :) Really glad that the essence still remained and it really is a little better than Timesurfers. I truly think that there is nothing to not like about The Midnight Society. There is a very strong foundation of the plot which stabilises the character and the events that occurs. All those forbidden love and harsh truth about the things one will do to protect his or her loved one. (Chap 26) - P.s I'll forever support #TeamAustin till volume 2, The Midnight Elites, releasing this year, and I get my answers. - More detailed review on my blog: jiamingunfathomable.wordpress.com
** I received an eARC by the author, and here is my honest review **
I was so excited to read this, as I had read the synopsis and it completely peaked my interest! Before I get into more detail and my positive opinions of this book, have to say it was not an easy read to get into. The beginning was interesting and eventful enough to hold my interest. It was about a quarter of the way through where I was so confused I had to really focus on all the details; the time travel/magical aspect and the numerous new characters that were being introduced and their relationships with one another. But after got through this hurdle and was able to see these things linking together it became much easier to read and get lost in. I read this book in basically two days. Once the ball got rolling I just couldn't seem to stop. I admit I saw some of the big reveals coming from a mile away, but it didn't diminish it once it had all come to light. And there were somethings I just didn't see coming, which was a great surprise and made me back track to make sure I didn't miss read anything. I loved the time-surfs and seeing the alterations to the timeline. The characters relationships to one another was interesting, especially while reading you'd second guess their motives - Rhonda sure knows how to keep you on your toes! This was such an intriguing and fresh story, with such a captivatingly-complex world. I'm most certainly looking forward to the rest of THE MIDNIGHT CHRONICLES - bring on THE MIDNIGHT ELITE!

I was grab by the fact that teenager appeared out of plan air and I was like what r and I'm glad I read it .This book was super fast everything in this book was great the action kick off right from the beginning and I just love it the characters romance were so cute .Austinn and Kate relationship was just so adorable that you couldn't help your self from falling in love with them .overall the plot grab my attention me I did not feel bored .the character in this book were written very well and the main character was so great and a kick ass which made love this story even more .there were some things in this book that I did not get but I eventually got over it .overall it was a great story and I would recommend it to anyone who find the self in a reading slump it help me and it might help you get out of one.
*I received a free ebook from the author in exchange for an honest review* 3.5 stars I really enjoyed The Midnight Society. The characters were fun, the plot was interesting and was paced well. The only issues I had with the book were that I found that some aspects of the magic weren't explained very well and some of the plot twists I found to be predictable. Overall, though, it is a really enjoyable and fun story that provides some very cool action scenes.
Cate's spent the last 5 years in witness protection, but it doesn't prepare her for the magic she encounters when everyone at the bus stop she's at freezes, except for her. Those she meets while the rest are frozen have a mission, but they come back the next day. Their world of magic and time travel is opened up to her, and she finds herself in the middle of two sides, neither truly good or bad. But she has to choose a side, and her future--and the present of the new people in her life--hangs in the balance.
This was intense, full of mystery and danger, secrets, magic and a series of choices with no clear-cut right way to go. I'm curious to learn more about Cate's choices and where the story is headed. I can't even begin to imagine a full resolution of the story because of the lack of clear delineation between good and bad.
The time travel is cool, but in this book they only travel between about 5 or so years into the future (travelers can only go backwards in time, but can bring those from the past forward, though at great risk to the passenger).
Totally gripping and crave-worthy, and just enough romance splashed in to add to the intrigue.
A teenage girl in witness protection program... A bomb on a bus... A secret society...
A lovely start to an incredible series! A fresh, entertaining read featuring a kicka*s heroine - YA fans should definitely check this book out.
I really enjoyed this book but, at times, I was annoyed with certain characters. I felt like I couldn't read more but I'm glad I pushed through and read it. It is a good book - worth a try!
Full of time travellers, powers, secrets, action, twists, good and evil; and Society and Order.
This was a very interesting YA read it was very well written and the characters were complex and yet it was still easy to follow their stories, I liked how they all entwined together. you can easily get caught up in this book and loose track of the hours.
A great read for anyone enjoying fantasy YA reads and I would think suitable for anyone of 13 and up.
Note: I was given an eARC in return for an honest review.
The beginning started off as any YA contemporary story instead of how I expected it would, that is, with some magic event right from the start. The catalyst occurred only after a few pages and it was very different too. Despite the fact that I didn’t enjoy it that much, I liked the idea of it. I was hooked in in the beginning and my interest sort of waned in the middle.
Despite the relationship between Cate and Jonah being completely platonic, I couldn’t help put ship them. Usually in books, girls like Cate leave guys like Austin-who is all perfect- in favor for guys like Jonah. Since the book was in dual POV of Cate and Jonah, I thought since history is being rewritten, it might change and Cate and Jonah would end up together. I didn’t occur and I stopped shipping them, but the relationship between Cate and Austin was all insta-love. There was not much relationship development when they already fell in love, you know? Once I found out about Jonah and Rose and their story, it’s perfect. I wish we got more into them rather than Cate and Austin because their story seems like one which could be portrayed as the main couple.
Disregarding all the usual ways the plot goes, Sermon shook everything up and went a new way. Cate and Jonah being platonic, Jonah and Rose not being the main couple, Austin being perfect with no baggage… all of it was different that what you would expect.
There was also a Hunger Games-ey trial that I didn’t enjoy very much.
Also, even though the book is in dual POV, it is narrated by Jonah (from 2017) and two Cates-Cate (2014) and Catherine (2017). Therefore we kept getting glimpses of the future and how things change. I liked that-it is required in such stories when we need to also know what happens in the future and why they timesurfed back to Cate.
One sour point though: what happened to Present Austin and Jonah? Cate started liking Future Austin and became friends with Future Jonah. Yes, there was an explanation about aura clashes and how two versions of one person can’t be in the same place but how does Cate meet and become close to Present Austin and Jonah? And them her? There was just a mention about Present Jonah and none about Austin. Plot holes.. plot holes..
According to me, it’s a pretty challenging experience to work with stories involving time-travelling, and the story that Sermon has come up with would have been hard to work out, so I would tip my hat for that. Overall, it was an okay book, which you can get from my rating. The ending was good and it made me think about scenarios about what happened between 2014 and 2017. Points for giving a cliffhanger which isn’t even about what happens AFTER the last line.
I was so excited when I found out about this book, the synopsis sounded so interesting and even better it was by an Australian author. I love finding and being able to support Australian authors.
As I said I was excited for this book, I expected it to be good, but holy crap! The Midnight Society turned out to be AMAZING. I absolutely loved it! The story captivated me from the very beginning and I ended up flying through it. I can't even describe what I loved most, it was just so excellently written.
The whole story was so gripping, intriguing and exciting that I was desperate to read more. There where no slows parts at all, which I absolutely adored after reading a few books that had so many parts that dragged, often leaving me feeling like I had to force myself to keep reading and wasn't enjoying it. This story had a tonne of plot twists, in a good way. I was keep guessing the whole time, I couldn't wait to finish the book but also didn't want it to end. I enjoyed reading this very much.
I love the world that Rhonda Sermon create, how she explored time travel and the different elements she added. I haven't read anything that explored time travel in that manner, it was so interesting and enchanting. Everything and everyone in this story was explained and explored so well, I was able to connect completely with the story and become entranced with it.
I loved reading about the main character Cate, she was so badass, determined, humourous, and about a million other things. I totally connected to her. I also loved the other characters, they were all so interesting and had such great and fascinating back stories. I was also incredibly glad that the romantic interest in this story was not insta-love, it seemed to develop naturally and was very fun to read. Additionally, I was thrilled that Cate was still independent and mature despite the romance, I hate it so much when the female main character turns in to a dependent, needy child when a romantic interest shows up.
Is it December yet??? I'm not sure I can wait till then for the next book. I will absolutely be rereading this one before the end of the year. The Midnight Society has definitely become one of my favourites.
First off, I'm really sorry if this review sounds harsh, but I read this book after binge-reading a whole lot of Shadowhunter Chronicles short stories and extra scenes. I promise I really did enjoy it!
I enjoyed how it got right into the story and action, without too much background information, it made me feel like I was immersed into the story. Most of the time, I find it really hard to read about time-travel through multiple PoVs, but I didn't really have trouble following the story. While I loved most of the plot line, I wasn't really keen on the Hunger Games-ish scene toward the end. I didn't really enjoy the ending, and I felt it was too fast and impactless.
Some parts of the story didn't really sit right with me, and sometimes I kind of got the feeling that the author was trying to speak with a teenage voice, but it didn't really sound right and some of the terms used felt a bit odd when used by Cate and the others. At some points I felt a bit annoyed how everything was being told, not shown, with little bits of unnecessary information.
Cate is an interesting protagonist, I enjoyed reading through her perspective, but some parts had me physically rolling my eyes at what she was doing or how she was acting, but I suppose that's the idea of having a 15-year-old protagonist, haha. Jonah is so cute, and when things I thought would happen didn't, I found it highly refreshing. The story is full of almost-cliches, which was actually kind of fun to read.
All in all, I did enjoy reading it and will be back for the next installment :)
DISCLAIMER: I was gifted an Amazon copy of this book in exchange for honest review.
Dang it! When I started reading, all I wondered was how everything would play out. How the story unfolds is a complete and total surprise.
This book follows Cate, a young girl who lives with her mother, Emme, and younger brother, Xavier. Their family is under surveillance in the witness protection program because Cate and her father had both been kidnapped. Cate's mother had worked with black ops, which might explain why Cate is a black belt and quick n her feet (to an extent).
Cate wonders if she is going insane. Every morning when she wakes up, something is different than the day before, but no one around her seems to notice. Hence the feelings of near-insanity. For example, her boyfriend, Zach, was never popular and they got along because of the fact. one minute he is singing sonnets, and the next he is breaking up with her over a text and telling her he is now with the head cheerleader. I know, breaking up through a text is the lowest, most pathetic thing anyone can do.
Cate's world is changing every day. Things begin to unwind on one particular day at a bus stop. A mysterious stranger who could be a Ralph Lauren model shows up in town and Cate's kidnapper radar is on full alert. That is, until the world stops turning and time freezes. But why is Cate not frozen like the rest of the waiting bus patrons? This is where Cate meets Austin, Rose and Rafe, three members of the Order, which can also be known as the Midnight Society.
This story is suspenseful and thrilling. There are surprises around every corner, and several 'AHA' moments as things suddenly make perfect sense. On a happy note, it was amazing! On the sad note? It ended on a bit of a cliffhanger and I don't know what I am going to do until the next book comes out. For a debut novel, this is phenomenal. I am going to keep this one on my radar. I NEED to know what comes next.
I received an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Opinion: I have been waiting to read this book for a couple months now and honestly had no idea what to expect. The way that the author kind of thrown you into this magical world was a little unexpected. I was a little confused at the very beginning because there was not much of an introduction of characters (which I sometimes complain about, I guess I’m never really happy, huh) But as soon as I caught on to the characters I was hooked! I really want to take a moment to give props to the magnificent brain that is in Ms. Rhonda Sermon’s head! The family trees in this story are CRAZY GENIUS. I vividly recall 4 times I gasped as I figured out how people were connected. I couldn’t put it down. I read well into the night for two consecutive nights. I need more of this story line! Likes: I loved the intricate family trees and the character relationships were insane! Time travel and magic went surprisingly well together. I thought one would overpower the other or they wouldn’t fit but they did. Thank you for also giving insight to the proper pronunciation of the names of the story! Dislikes: The way the story started really fast took me a couple pages to figure out. It also took a while to properly understand the rules that govern the Timesurfers. Any world that deals with time travel and magic have to have rules, but they were never laid out all at once so it was a tad bit confusing. Overall: I loved being immersed in the world of a Timesurfer. I have to urge to practice my martial arts and dress in all black and have really awesome rainbow hair extensions. I fell in love with the story and the characters. The romance was adorable and I cannot wait for the next installment of The Midnight Chronicals Rating: 4/5 Stars!
I received an eARC of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
I have always love reading books that talks about time travel or different dimensions because they always spin your brain around and around. Usually, stories with time travel concerned is more on the science side of it. But this book was all about the magic and Rhonda Sermon did a great job at explaining the mechanics of time traveling in this series. This book was really action-packed, funny and light. I loved how it played out. The idea of this world was extremely interesting. I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book. It was also fast paced which I did like so there is no dragging of the story. However, I did feel that relationships between the characters were not noticeably developed.
Like, I totally ship Austin and Cate together but I would really like to see when they started to have feelings for each other and connect through deep talks rather than having an attraction for each other only. Furthermore, Jonah and Cate....when did they become friends?? Cate was scared of him and then suddenly after one day they are close to being best friends. For me, a good book is when plotline is good and characters are likeable. I did love these characters. All of them. Cate, Austin, Jonah, Rose and Eve. Even Zach was hilarious to me. When he kept trying to get back together with Cate. HAHHAHA. My favourite character is Jonah no doubt. All in all, I did really enjoy this book and cannot wait for December 2016 for the 2nd book of this series.
4.5 stars Wow! The Midnight Society jumps straight into a fast pace and doesn't slow down. It is an amazingly complex plot, that at times, had me re-reading chapters to absorb all the elements of the mix of time travel & magic. It was one epic ride!
I felt that the characters & their relationships lacked some depth and development in places, but, I still fell in love with the ghost, Jonah. I personally felt a little old to relate to Cate in spots, but she is still a feisty, kickass lead character, with enough light and shade to make her likable.
I was a little disappointed it wasn't based in Australia, but that doesn't detract from this book!
It was an enjoyable read, and the plot pulled me in from the first few moments. Can't wait to see what is in store next for the Midnight Chronicles.
This is the first book in this amazing series is about a a young women named Cate who has been under witness protection for five years. The storyline flows through perfectly. The foundation of the plot is very strong as it stabilizes the characters and the events. The character's are realistic, captivating, and provide a certain kind of wisdom. This is a unique, fast paced, and a compelling story. There are a lot of twist and turns. If you like time travel along with fantasy & magic you will love this. This is purely Sci-fi and thrilling action packed. Looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
Now let me say not my normal genre, so no fault at the author or book at all. That I couldn't get into it. But I must say it was well written great story not boring at all. Just wasn't for me. It's time travel sci fi. And very good. But not for me. Now for someone who loves this genre would be perfect. I'd recommended it to ppl who looks for these reads. Even tho not my genre I still say great book. Never a dull moment. Just I wanted something out of my genre and I dont regret it. Yet still had me interested till the end.
I really enjoyed the dynamic between Cate and Jonah, Moretz's foot soldier. Although Cate is the central character my favourite character was Jonah. The only thing I didn't like about this book was that it was a bit too descriptive in some parts where it didn't need to be but that in no way affected how much I loved this book or took anything away from the dialogue which was at times hilarious. Cate's sassiness combined with plot twists and laugh out loud moments.... I really didn't want it to end.
I've never read a book like this. Timesurfers? It takes you into a a whole new world of mystery, magic and time travel. Time resets each night at midnight and you never know what they'll wake up to. The lines between good and evil are blurred. It's an excellent book. I'm looking forward to book 2!
I thought this story was great, and very well thought out. I'm excited for the next book! The time travel aspect of this book was incredibly interesting to me, and I quite enjoyed it. I would recommend picking it up!
This is one of those books that you really can't rush through. There is so much going on and the concept of time travel and it's impacts to history was a bit overwhelming to follow at times. However, I really did get into it given the mystery behind why Cate is so important to everyone. And I must say that the author did a good job with all of the twists. I did eventually start to put together some of the mysteries, but waiting to see what Cate's reactions would be to those still kept me glued to the story.
The story begins with 15 year old Cate - a girl who is forced to leave her home in Australia to move to America as part of the witness protection program. After the kidnapping incident involving her father, it's just her, her younger brother and her mom. And her mom is one of those characters that is shadowy...rarely seen or heard. Instead, there is Pip, someone we don't get to meet, but who plays a huge role in Cate's day to day and Eve, Cate's best friend. Cate isn't exactly popular, but that all changes suddenly and a whole new world opens up to her. Enter the "Timesurfers", individuals with magical talents and the ability to travel through time. So, here is where things really get crazy.
At times I felt so sorry for Cate. She had no idea what she was a part of and yet at other points in time, I kind of thought that some things should have clicked in her head. Although given how many secrets everyone was keeping from her, how she didn't just run away from it all is beyond me. By the end of the book, I'm surprised she hadn't pulled all of her hair out. Thank God for Austin, who I was a bit concerned about at first, and Jonah, who I'm still not sure how he fits into future Cate's life. Either way, both have her back, even if it seemed a little deceptive too.
I mentioned that some of this was confusing. The time traveling part and the clashes with the impacts on the characters took a bit to wrap my head around. Perhaps I'm just a little slow, but I had to re-read it a few times just to be sure I understood it all. Kudos to the author though. For a first book, this was actually really, really good. I cannot wait for the next one.
The story of a young teenager coming to age as her powers are awakened and her whole life becomes a movie drama/action adventure. Cate thought the biggest issues in her life were keeping secret her family was in the witness protection program and having a fake boyfriend who didn't know it was fake. How she soon learned she wished thoses were her only problems. The journey this young woman has to take is incredible, showing such an inner strength even some adults never achieve. But her temper and rash decisions get her into some pretty tough situations. There is magic, lots of fighting and of course the time traveling. A suburb job of fashioning this unusual world that is Cate's reality. The characters are engaging and the personalities so varied. I am impressed how the basic characteristics do not change, Rose is always brusk and cold, Eve is the loyal friend and Austin is always there for her. You get the idea. Enjoy your trip into this fantastic world. It will make you hungry for the next installment.
