Crystal's Calamity

Rate this book
Clementine McKay finds out she's a lot more than a demure little school teacher from the foothills of the Appalachians when her father gets Gold Fever. The dangerous trip to the Sierra Nevada Mountains not withstanding, she soon learns that despite her small stature and youth, she's a force to be reckoned with. When tragedy strikes she becomes smarter, stronger and more determined than ever to find her father's murderer.

As Crystal, the most sought after whore at The Red Petticoat Saloon, she parlays her skills in a way no one else could have. Now, if Jasper Montgomery would only stop snooping around and interfering in her plans she might just get what she wants most… revenge.

Jasper Montgomery lives and gambles in Culpepper Cove for one reason only. It's his home. Great wealth allows him to do exactly as he pleases and when the dirty little miner's daughter arrives at The Red Petticoat he takes pity on her. He'll be her first paying customer, educating the poor virgin on the skills necessary to please a man. In his mind, there was no sense letting a rough miner ruin her. Yes, he would spin a web of passion and pleasure for her that would endear him to her forever.

Never in a million years did he imagine he was the fly and not the spider.

SHE’S FULL OF LUST FOR REVENGE

A great addition to The Red Petticoat Saloon series with mystery, suspense, murder, a determined woman, a gambler, and a long list of men who seek her out, Crystal becomes the most popular gem in the bunch. Nineteen-year-old Clem McKay witnesses the cold-blooded murder of her father by a hidden claim jumper on their gold mine. She only knows the killer by his voice, and she knows it will take time, but she will get revenge. Clementine goes to Jewel and is hired on. Gambler Jasper Montgomery is at the Red Petticoat and witnesses Clem’s unveiling as a female. He is drawn in by the spunky girl and thus begins their tête-à-tête and sexual encounters. He keeps proposing marriage, but she has an ax to grind and won’t stop until she gets her man. Why does Crystal have a steady stream of miners, farmers and cowboys visiting her, always courteous and with a smile, but coming back downstairs she is always put together, no hair out of place?

The plot kept me captivated, many times laughing out loud, and you can’t help but love the relationship between Crystal and those who encounter her. The dialog is witty and entertaining, with a great cast of characters and situations. My favorite laugh out loud line, “You rented me for the night, not for nine months.”

A new gem has arrived for the Red Petticoat series and Crystal comes with a whole lot of baggage. She's determined on finding justice and stubborn enough to do it all by herself. Jasper is well to do and seems to enjoy his gambler life. But this new gem is throwing him off his game as the little spitfire keeps throwing him for a loop.

We get to see that despite it all Crystal is loyal and is truly a kind and generous person who isn't going to take things out on the wrong person. But she is determined to do things her way and keeping her mouth shut about what she's up to.

But justice will be served and there are plenty of surprises for everyone in store. This was so much fin to read as you watched both characters jump to conclusions, dig in their heels, and figure out the best way to move ahead.

Fantastic!

What a fantastic addition to this series! Crystal made me smile and cheer her on! Jasper was the perfect man for her. Their journey to love was a wild ride! If you haven't read this series yet, what are you waiting for? Each book stands alone nicely but you really are missing something special if you don't give the series a try. I can't wait for the next!!

Crystal's Calamity is the fourth book in Stevie MacFarlane's The Red Petticoat Saloon. In this book we meet Clementine (Clem) McKay, a 21 year-old former school teacher and Jasper Montgomery a wealthy gambler. Clementine and her father leave the east heading west in search of gold. Clementine hid her female identity by dressing as a young boy, Clem. So when her father is killed for his claim, the murderer let her going thinking the young boy is harmless. Clem vows to bring this murder to justice, however, she doesn't know his identity. But, she will never forget his voice. She must remain in Culpepper Cove to pursue her quest. Penniless, but determined to fulfill quest that brings her to the Red Petticoat Saloon. Jasper happens to be in the saloon when Clem enters and asks for a job as a red petticoat. Her femininity is revealed and is given a chance. However, Jasper has other plans. As a gem at the Red Petticoat Saloon, Clem becomes known as Crystal. Will Clem find out the identity of her father's murderer? Will Jasper help her? What happens between Clem and Jasper?

Ms. MacFarlane has penned a strong character-driven plot. Both her primary and secondary characters are strong with several layers to their personalities. As her plot unfolds, we witness a transformation in her characters. I enjoyed the way she used suspense through the pursuit of the murderer to help with the rising action of her plot line. MacFarlane masterfully used literary devices of dialog, dual point of view and descriptive language to move her plot at a nice pace. Her dialog was well structured. The banter between Jasper and Clem is priceless. Her use of descriptive language powerfully captures the readers' interest by drawing them into each scene. The dual point of view of Jasper and Clem allows readers to see them vulnerable and forge ahead toward happiness. This is definitely a book to read on a lazy Sunday. Happy Reading!

Liked the storyline, but it was sort of like eating an Easter peep - small, fluffy and sweet, but not a lot of substance. It just needed more.

The fourth story in this entertaining series is short and enjoyable. Crystal witnessed the murder of her father, and with no alternative, went to work at the Red Petticoat Saloon – hoping to meet the murderer and get her revenge. She meets Jasper, a wealthy older man who falls in love with her and introduces her to both sex and spanking. His efforts to get her to marry him are blocked by her determination for revenge; but by the end, everything is resolved. Crystal and Jasper are likable characters, as are the other people in the story – many of whom carry over from the previous books in the series. Reading the other books in the series is helpful, but not necessary to enjoy this book.

I think this is my favorite Stevie MacFarlane book yet!

Clem was the perfect heroine- beautiful, brave, intelligent, strong willed, resilient. I loved her so much!
Jasper was a great hero - stern, sexy, handsome, open minded, kind....

This story was amazing. Great action, tender romance, ups and downs, steamy sex, hot spankings.

It was also really funny.
And I absolutely loved how Clem - Crystal - became a favorite for most of the miners with her extra special skills. (LOL, I won't spoil it for anyone).

This was such a fun story.
Another great addition to the Red Petticoat series!

I am not sure what to say about Jasper and Clem, they are both fantastic. The author set Clem on a path for justice and never let her waiver. Jasper knows her secrets and has trouble reconciling her need for vengeance with his need to keep her for himself and protect her. I can truly say that Crystal is the most unique gem, so far. With her loyal and ever-growing list of customers, she becomes one of the busiest gems. I am not sure how Jasper just sat back and watched her repeated trips upstairs with all her various customers but he earned my admiration for his restraint as he knew how much her vengeance meant to her. The story kept me glued to my e-reader and I enjoyed every second of it.
