Bungo stray dogs, you're getting ALL THE STARS for this year.
This keeps getting better and better! this volume was everything, Akutagawa and Atsushi fight are the best, I wish to see them more together and mocking each other about their abilities, they are like Dazai and Chuuya version. Dazai is a silly crazy idiot kid who needs a big slap in the head, I love him!
origin review: I don't think this volume is all that great but I at least am happy to see the war among the three groups of agents with supernatural powers has come to an end. The fight scenes are as awesome as usual but I am not very invested with the main characters' stories and their struggles, instead I'm more interested with the villains. Haha.
Rating: 5 stars
edited after re-reading:
(1) Now, let's face it! After re-reading the manga, I found I actually like the anime-version of the fight scenes much better, good job bone (the producer of the anime series)! I am not saying the manga version is lacking but the anime seems to be even better!!!
(2) The Guild era really is one of my most favorite from the whole series! So I have been re-reading this volume quite frequestly. ^_^
(3) ... I just need to stop myself from reading this series by using the BL prospective, at least for a while.....but...but...but...just look at the book cover. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
(4) Anyway, I still love the action scenes in the manga, plus I really LOVE Fitzgerald's backstory!!!! Love it love it!
(5) please don't you ever get me started with all the giggling and fangirl's exclaiming I have done for all these Bungō Stray Dogs fanfics (Edagawa Rampo/Edgar Allan Poe is a thing, mind you. XD)
Extra information: This volume is from season 2 of the anime, the Guild Arc.
I'll just rant my thoughts in points because I just can't describe the beauty of Bungo Stray Dogs.
- In this volume, we can see Atsushi and Akutagawa's first appearance as partner (ohhoo Shin Soukoku). - Fitzgerald is so... wow... imagine having an ability like his. I can't help but wonder what if Daisuke Kambe (from Fugou Keiji Balance Unlimited) have that ability too? Will his bank account say balance unlimited too hahahhaha - Compared to the anime, some of the fighting parts have lesser details but the art and the suspense building is good enough to make me feel emotional. - Harukawa sensei's art style is immaculate! I just can't get enough of it because the characters are so perfect! - This volume also has a lot of words that left a deep feeling in my heart. This is also one of the reasons why I love bsd so much, because it makes me stop for a while an rethink of my life. Am I worthy enough to live? Have I spent too much of my time haunted by my past? Did I grieve too much? These questions are impactful to my life and I love how I can relate to the characters in bsd.
WARNING!!!! I'll end this review by sharing some of the quotes that I love in this particular volume, so skip because you might feel like these are spoilers.
"A former murderer has no right to become a good person" Do you truly believe that?
'Strength is for reaching out to those who are struggling in the lowest depths of despair.'
'Did you really believe that weretiger? That "someone" would give you that permission? That if you spilled enough of your own blood fighting for the sake of others someone would affix a seal on you to proclaim "worthy of living"?'
'You are a fool that has everything yet you remain unaware of it and keep clinging to your old wounds. ...... You are a fool of wallowing in your own tragedy with no idea how fortunate you are.'
'Am I...a fool? Is it foolish to think of wanting to escape from those memories?
Yes, it's foolish. The words of your past has nothing to do with who you really are.'
"When what one wants to do is different from what one is suited to do, what should one do?" Everyone struggles to know what the right way to live is. What do we fight for? How should we live? No one can tell us answer. What we do have is the right to lose our way. To dash about aimlessly in the lowest depths. Like stray dogs caked in mud.
*akutagawa and atsushi fighting the big bad guy* ... akutagawa: so let's talk about your childhood trauma you fucking piece of shit (akutagawa i know what you are)
I'm giving this volume 4 stars, but it had some really awesome moments that deserve to be mentioned. Like, Atsushi and Akutagawa cooperated, which was awesome, and that Rashomon Demonic Armor ability was really wow. The new "Double black", huh? And Dostoyevsky finally made an appearance! I was really looking forward to it.
Honestly it’s amazing how Asagiri manages to make you sympathize with pretty much every character, the villains especially. Except for scalpel guy over there. No one likes pedos.
2nd read my poor mutuals on my priv twitter having to shoulder the brunt of my excessive commentaries for this volume. you can't expect me to do otherwise, not when sskk is involved!
1st read GOD i love atsushi and akutagawa so much i love sskk so much i adore kyouka i love everything abt this tbh
*Reread 1/28/2022* I love the Atsushi/Akutagawa duo SO MUCH. and the cover of this volume is absolutely gorgeous. I can't believe I used to dislike the manga's art style.
*Original Review 4/1/2020* Why am I just now realizing that Dazai was purposefully trying to make Akutagawa and Atsushi the next Dazai and Chuuya duo.
Dazai is such a jerk. Akutagawa just wants his acceptance and he's so mean to him!! Like Akutagawa is just a giant child and he's ready to fight Atsushi at any moment but also very quick to save him lol. And him passing out after Dazai praises him gets me every time.
I also find the Poe x Ranpo dynamic interesting. Like Poe is trying to get Ranpo's approval and "win" against him, but irl Ranpo got his pen name from Poe so it's like a role reversal. Reading the physical copies of the manga is so nice cause I'm getting all these fun facts. I love it!
Chapters 34~37 : The Guild Arc [End] I would give this whole arc ~4 stars. It was absurd and fun as usual, particularily the Dazai-Chuya moments. The large cast of new characters, though interesting, was probably a bit too much. We didn't get the chance to warm up to all of them (Not as much as I would've liked anyway). On the other hand, the emotional growth Atsushi and Akutagawa underwent was top notch. This duo is so promising, and I can't wait to see more of them.
And just as usual, this arc ends on quite the cliffhanger : "We need a new incarnation of the double black combo in order to prepare for the "real catastrophe" brewing on the horizon. From here on out, even I can't anticipate how things will develop. But that man should have already started making his move. That 'Demon'..."--Dazai We even get a glimpse of this phenomenal opponent !! One of my top favorite authors !!
happy bsd day!!! unfortunately vol 10 is the only one i don’t have so ig i’m going to hold off reading the next one until i can find it 💔 everything about this vol was so good. the moments between the ada are so sweet, i love seeing kyoka there <33 also why do i feel so bad for the guild their breakup was so emotional?? and we finally got the legendary akutagawa and atsushi team up!!! 10/10 from me
Good lord, this is actually good. The action in this volume is *chef's kisses* The scene with kyouka? Made me tear up a lil bit. Looking forward for more.
