Second Circle Tattoos #4

The Darkest Link

Rate this book
When her car breaks down off the side of a lonely highway far from her sunny Miami home, tattoo artist Lia never expected her very own white knight to ride up on the back of a barely street-legal motorcycle...and she never expected to fall for her dark savior. After a string of failed relationships and a bruised heart Lia is not looking for forever, and the hot mechanic, with his sexy scruff and shaggy hair, is simply impossible to resist. He's the perfect candidate for a mind-blowingly-perfect, no-strings-attached one-night stand.

Reid left his life in Chicago far behind him and hasn't been back, but he's never been able to escape the guilt he feels about his own painful role in inviting a monster into his baby sister's life. A monster who almost destroyed her. Being with Lia is an unexpected gift, one he doesn't feel he deserves. As unique and beautiful as the designs she inks, theirtheir one night together has him wanting more than he should. When he surprises her at her tattoo studio, Second Circle Tattoos, in Miami, he's in for a shock—and a fist to the face—when his past and present collide.

With secrets coming to the surface, Reid and Lia are thrown into a world of betray and lies that threatens to pull them under, and the last link to his former life may be the darkest of them all.

Four-time RITA finalist, Scarlett Cole, is a contemporary romantic suspense / contemporary romance author (represented by Louise Fury at The Bent Agency) who calls both Toronto, Canada and Manchester, England home. A born city dweller, she periodically quashes the urge to live in the country by hiking up a mountain to remind herself that living away from people would terrify the pants off her.

She believes everybody deserves their love story to be told and loves her heroes on the rough and rugged side…and usually tall (because she married one of those 6ft 6” men you read about in romance!). She’s an A-type personality and Scorpio star sign, so good luck getting her to do anything she doesn’t want to.

When she isn’t writing, she’s happy to talk hot men and expensive shoes while drinking a cold gin and tonic. Don’t bring up olives. As far as Scarlett is concerned, they are the devil’s food. As long as you don’t bring up olives, she’s happy to hear from any time.

Sometimes fate decides that it's time to deal with the past and for Reid, that time came when sexy Lia got stranded in his town and he happened by. They have an immediate spark with plenty of tension but surprisingly enough don't act on it immediately. As their non-relationship begins to develop into more, Reid, who at the time Lia knows as Kenny, goes to the shop she works at to return something she left behind. He finds himself face to face with his past and there's no turning back. Only moving forward. It's not easy for him to do so while still trying to figure out what he has going with Lia but they find a way. Lia is dealing with all the stuff surrounding Reid but also her own problems. Her relationship with her dad, an aspiring politician, has never been particularly good but as he gears up to run for governor it gets worse. She is dealing with his attempts at manipulation and he is getting worse by the day. There's also the fact that both he and Lia are finding themselves in serious danger. While they go through all the drama, I enjoyed their development individually and as a couple. They were scorching hot together. The plot was quite involved with a few different things all happening at once but that's how life is. It doesn't slow down for anyone. I didn't feel like it was overdone. All in all a great read. Safety: No OW/OM/Sharing. No rape/abuse.

Gah, it makes me so happy when an author has the ability to bring a promising series full circle and do it with a strong, sure installment. This series called out to me from the start with the unique ways Scarlett Cole gave me complete insight into her characters. I was there each time experiencing all the emotional upheaval both people were dealing with... each person equally strong...and equally confused as to how to be in the possible relationship presented before them. There may have been a hiccup or so along the way but reading this series was worth my devotion.

In The Darkest Link (Second Circle Tattoos, #4), we have Lia traveling to her first speaking event where she is the authority on American Traditional Tattoo Art. It is a subject near and dear to her heart... for Lia looks like she could have walked right off the decorated side of a B-52 Bomber from the war...

Rolled hair, Chanel Rouge Allure Lipstick/Pirate Red lips, Lined Cat Eyes before it was "a thing" and a figure dressed in a wardrobe taken from Dita Von Teese and Christina Hendricks from Mad Man...
Yes, she is a vision and now she is cursing out her equally cool Red Vintage Plymouth Fury. At this very inconvenient time, "Cherry" decided to give out leaving Lia to try to figure out how to fix this mess...

Reid is riding on this off-highway, scenic road to clear his head. After doing all the major "fixes" at his garage, he needed this ride. Riding helps to make his mind focus...and during it, he decides to look into a home situation of one of the boys in a youth program he is a part of...he sees a vision coming into view...He sees legs... legs for days... the kind you want to be wrapped around your hips...and then travels up to take the entire picture into focus...A Real-Life Pin-Up with a polka dot umbrella twirling and shading this woman.

What the Hell... Damn, she is beautiful...

Lia takes a look at her Motorcycle Knight in Shinning Sweat and Leather... and her heart goes a little pitter-pat...Her mind screams at her to reign it in and doesn't go falling heart first only to be slammed again...a pattern this independent, hard-working, talented Tattoo Artist of Second Circle has...

Reid has been on a path to be a better person...he knows he failed his sister all those years ago... setting in motion things that shouldn't have happened to anyone....it is a burden he has worn and tried to compensate for through all of his actions since. He finally landed in Fort Pierce, Fl after a while and became close with the garage owner he worked for. So close, the man wanted Reid to take it over and he has...it has allowed him to build a business and the freedom to do custom work for Bikes and Vintage cars, his true love. So seeing this woman who is so incredible next to his vintage car wet dream is almost painful in deciding which to go to first...

From the start these two click... and to both, they are highly aware that they should stay away... but for entirely different reasons...He, because he sees this perfect person...and has talked with her while waiting for the tow... and understands immediately how she deserves someone so much better than him...She, because she is unsure of her heart... is always falling head over heels for the new guy, and then she is disappointed because her intense feelings are not returned... she is an all-or-nothing kind of gal...

They do the meeting and kind of wish they were dating/ lusting/being together dance and then go their separate ways...He to fix her car and she to do her event and visit her parents... The parental visit was as horrible as it always is...She comes from a family of Classic bullshit to the highest degree. It was only her Granny who was able to love her unconditionally and with this love, she was set financially to pursue her dreams, thankfully. Her Granny's concern for her mother made her accept the promise to look out for her. As her mother is not mentally strong and her father is willing to step over everyone to fulfill his ambition of being Governor. As the top Defense Attorney in the country, he has the reputation of being the wonderful man fighting the big guys and having the devoted family but once in the private home... that is far from the truth. He has ruthlessly destroyed any feeling of self for her mother and he sees Lia as a major disappointment.

Lia is riding high from her event and wants to share this euphoria... and does with Reid... it's wonderful in all the ways it should be-and they both agreed it would be the casual one niter, etc.
Except ...both know deep down, this wasn't casual at all.

This story was put together like a perfect puzzle with the easy pieces falling into place lulling you to think the be reveal happened and then surprise... there is another picture revealed underneath. We have all of the characters from the previous books plus the nod to others on the edges who could soon have their own series.. Hint Hint- Do it, Scarlett Cole, :D (She is... Yeah!)

This had two people who did not primarily play games with each other... when there was a hiccup in the relationship it didn't last too long for you to be furious with the culprit. The chemistry and playfulness between them was perfection ... And the nod to how much ALL of US hate the use of BABE over and over was ABSOLUTELY THE BEST.

This is a series to enjoy and since I know for sure an offshoot is coming (Yeah I called it in my last review, tee hee), I advise you to get going and read...

A wonderful conclusion to the Second Circle Tattoos series. This was Reid and Lia's book. Reid is the brother of the heroine in the first book; and Lia works at the tattoo shop where this series has taken place. I am so glad that I gave this author and series a chance, and I am looking forward to the spin off series about the rock band that we meet in the third book!!!

I will try and do a better review when I am feeling better, but one thing I want to say is that I highly recommend this series if you are looking for a romance with a touch of mystery, and some great sex thrown in!

Reid has been running from his past for many years, and he has no intention of ever stopping. He's put himself in a kind of isolation, choosing to stay away from his family as a punishments for his past sins against them. His self imposed purgatory comes to an end, though, when he stops to help a woman who was broken down on the side of the road.

Lia has her own demons that she's trying to escape from, but when she meets Reid she thinks it's the perfect time to finally do something for herself. But when their pasts make an appearance again, and connect together, their new relationship may not survive it.

These characters were brilliant. Not only did we get to see them come together as a couple, and saw their relationship develop, but we also got to see them grow individually. With both of them having a very difficult past, they had a lot of stuff to get over before they could move on in a relationship. I really liked that we got that of part each of them and got to see them move forward with one another.

I honestly wasn't sure how I was going to feel about Reid and Harper finally seeing each other after all these years during this book. Not that I didn't want Harper to finally get the closure she needed from Reid, but I didn't want it to take away from his book. I had nothing to worry about though because Scarlett Cole perfectly wrote this story to include both Lia and Reid's and Reid's and Harpers. There was no important moment left out between all of these characters, and somehow it was all written to where it came together in a very beautiful way.

Overall, you need to read this series. These characters are like one big family that will captivate you from the very first moment. They have their ups and and downs but they always stick together. There's something for everyone with this series and very eclectic group of people so it's a definite recommend from me.

I think I liked this one even more than the previous book. Don't get me wrong, The Purest Hook is a great book but this one is even better. The plot and the flow were really good and I enjoyed reading about the characters and their chalanges of daily life (and for some also past)! In comparison to the previous book, this story takes it a bit further in terms of action and mystery and all the danger that's surrounding the main characters. Also, the fact that we get to see two main characters from previous books so vital to this story and seeing their HEA makes me so happy. I think that added to me liking the story that much.

She’d made a deal with the devil, just like Reid had. It didn’t bode well that it was the one thing they had in common.

Reid and Lia are such great characters and the way they met, well, I don't mind at all. As Reid would say, it was all about the long legs. Both have some touchy relationship with their parents but Lia definitely takes the crown on that. Man, her dad is a real piece of work. He's just a horrible human being. From the way he treats his family to the lenght he would go to achieve his goals, just wow. I'm glad his story ended the way it did. And as for Reid's dad, well, he did show some remorse, so there's that. I definitely loved the way he met his long lost sister again and how they got to know each other again. It was painful but in the long run so worth it. I can't say I liked Reid over Lia's character or the opposite, it's more that I liked them both equally. They both have such good qualities and together they make an awesome team. There is truly nothing that I'd change about them. Both sacrificed so much for their family, also for each other and are so loyal to them, that's just amazing.

I definitely didn't expect the read to be so good but I'm absolutely thankful for the way things turned out at the end. I'm becomming a fan of this series fast and I think I need to read books one and two ASAP! I would recommend this read for sure!

Ok, loved book 1, book 2 was ok, loved book 3.

And I was really looking forward to this. I have wondered about Harper's brother since book 1.

But for me this fell short, and I had the same complaints in this as I had in book 2.

The over use of "coincidence". In book 2, Drea just so happens to somehow (cant even remember now) become involved in some drama with Cujo's mother, who he has not seen for years ya ya ya.

Here, Lia just happens to meet Reid, Harper's long lost brother, then HER dad just so happened to have connections with the father of the man who attacked Harper, and was Reid's ex best friend.

And as with book 2, excess drama. Reid coming back and reconnecting with his sister would have been enough, Lia and her being emotionally estranged from her father, would have been enough. Add them together, then some other drama involving hit and runs and Molotov cocktails quite frankly verged on the too too much in far to little pages.

And this book felt rushed! The relationship between Reid and Lia went so fast I did not even have time to grumpily mutter "insta love". Reid reuniting with Harper felt rushed. And it is BECAUSE there is so much excess drama.

Ok, I know I am in the minority, but for me this author peaked at book 1.

Oh and btw, we live in the age of google, you can literally find out anything. If you want to add something in your book (ie the reason your heroine's father supposedly hates her so much) make it actually factually correct. Apparently her dad hates her as her twin died in the womb, as her mom developed twin to twin transfusion syndrome. Ok, but her twin was a boy, hence making it impossible!! The whole point being they share a placenta, so therefore HAVE to be "identical" twins. It is medically impossible people.

Anyway, now that I have ranted, as i can do.

3 stars, since I was glad to have the Reid issue from book 1 resolved, and I liked him as a hero, the heroine was a bit one dimensional for me. All 50's pin up sex kitten and heels and not much else. But it was a nice enough end to the series.

Since the beginning (of the series), Lia's character intrigued me. Then, when I heard about Reid getting a book, I couldn't help but jump for joy. I wanted him to redeem himself and who better to be along side him than a sassy firecracker who knows what, and who, she wants? The Darkest Link can be read as a standalone, but I would highly suggest reading The Strongest Steel first, as this book is partially based on the events of the first. Reid and Harper meeting again made my heart so happy, and how this book was their reconnection was even better. Both sides got to explain their stories and secrets and I really enjoyed how interconnected the stories are. The Darkest Link brought every character's journey round full circle.

“In the words of Meatloaf, I would do anything for love, but I won’t do that.”
Reid burst out laughing. “Meatloaf? Really?”

Reid is the just like the typical guy you want in your life, fictional or not. He's loyal, protective, can take charge of a situation, hard working and has a huge heart. He sacrifices so much and will do anything in his power to right past wrongs, even when he isn't at fault. He's sweet, demanding, and throw in his at times cocky attitude, Lia reeled herself in a real keeper who I wouldn't mind stealing *wink wink*.

He spun on his stool and waited for her to walk around to him. Large hands gripped her hips and pulled her to stand between his legs. “I need you to promise me that you will never let anybody dim your light. It’s the most goddamn beautiful thing about you. Don’t dim it for anyone. Ever.”

On paper, Lia and I really have nothing in common, however I formed an attachment to her emotionally. I can't even pinpoint exactly what it was but I loved her. And thank the freaking lord she could be upfront about something like how she falls hard and fast for a guy, and not be like the characters that hold it in and exploded over their feelings. She was always open and was such a beautiful person. She's a true example of never judge a book by its cover.

Can I just say how much fun it is to read about flirty banter? How often is that skipped over these days and all of a sudden were already into the 'I love you', part of the relationship. I want to see a connection grow! I want to read about a fictional couple like how you might experience a real relationship. I want to see the attraction, the butterflies, the smiles, the giggles. Scarlett Cole delivers in every aspect.

“Okay, babe. Enjoy the rest of your day.”
“Don’t babe me.”
“Wouldn’t dream of it,”

I noticed that this book isn't *quite* as heavy as the others. There's laughs, smiles, and plenty of love. It still has its own set of issues, and trust me, there's plenty, but I could laugh along with the characters without worrying what might be around the corner. They were resilient and dedicated.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: There's no Second Circle couple that can top my love for Trent and Harper, but damn if Reid and Lia didn't come close at times! I loved getting plenty of time with the past couple as well and how they all grew together as a unit. This helped to bring back all of the familiar feelings from the rest of the series and really remind the reader how much they love the other characters beforehand. They can't take first place, but Reid and Lia have officially become my second favourite Second Circle couple (sorry Cujo, Drea, Dred and Pixie! Still love you all).

“Babe, look at me. Whatever happens from now on, we’ll always have this. You and me. I promise.”

My biggest wish was that we could've had some more emotional attachment between Reid and Lia because at times it seemed to be 98% physical. I get it, trust me, physical is important too, but I just think back to the other books and love how much stronger the characters get while having those moments. Also how much I swoon over them. Things like Trent and Harper's hug, or Cujo's tattoo, that sort of stuff. Reid's constant term of endearment, no matter how some people think it's overused, was so sweet. Plus, the fact that he had some serious balls to start calling Lia a pet name.

One thing I loved about this story is that no matter how much was going on (and trust me, there's some drama), it's uncomplicated and easy to follow. You always understand what's happening, who is being referred to and what issue is being addressed. Not only that, but the twists, secondary characters and conflicts from the plot are easy to follow along. This was one of my setbacks from Drea and Cujo's book, so I'm glad to see that addressed.

“Anyway, at the end of Labyrinth, Jennifer Connelly’s character, Sarah, breaks Jareth’s spell by saying, ‘Through dangers untold, and hardships unnumbered . . . my will is as strong as yours . . . You have no power over me.’”
“I really want to be all serious and nod my head at that, but I think you just attempted to drop knowledge by quoting a movie in which David Bowie wears tights.”

One thing I noticed that I would've loved to have been expanded upon was the twists/conflicts. It seemed like they were very briefly described and all of a sudden moved on from. Moved on, not meaning the conflict had been resolved but I mean literally the scene changed. It seems we were given more of a psychological look at the incidents and their effects on each character, rather than the emotions and visuals as each trauma takes place. This being expanded upon (in my opinion) could've helped not only with imagery and depth, but the emotional connection/growth between characters as well. A rather minor point, but something felt was important to address.

Have I mentioned that I want to live in Miami? Or say... Have an extended vacation there. That sounds like a good plan, get a feel for it first. There's very few books that make me want to actually live within the city or world that the author created, but this series is one of them. Given the chance, I'd check out the sunshine state in a heartbeat!

I hate (like, avoid if at all possible), the third person narrative style, so that says something about Cole's writing, considering the fact that I DEVOUR these books. Sure, it helps that she gives dual POV but with every paragraph, I'm entranced. She makes me forget that this isn't my preferred style and just enjoy the book. I, for one, am starting a slow clap because I'll be the first to admit that I'm picky. Scarlett wholeheartedly stays true to her characters and commits to telling their story. You can't help but hold your breath, dive in, and swim. I promise, you won't surface until you flip the last page.

My favourite part of The Darkest Link has to be the epilogue. Every character had time in the spot light, conclusions were drawn, and it was not only the perfect ending to each individual couple, but a magnificent ending to the series. The Darkest Link concluded in the perfect send off to the Second Circle series and all of the characters that we have grown to love. I couldn't be happier with how it ended. There may have even been a little tear, though I'm sure I'd deny that.

“We might all be in a bit of a mess for now,” Harper said. “But we’re finally all reunited, and there are no more secrets. I feel like we’ve come full circle, finally.”

What a good read The Darkest Link turned out to be.

From the first page I knew this was going to be a good read. The plot was entertaining and the drama was just enough to keep me turning the pages.
I loved Lia and Reid, they were such great characters, loved their sass, their passion, their humour, their honesty and the chemistry between them was smoking!

I've really enjoyed the Second Circle Tattoos series, each book had been highly entertaining and I highly recommend them all.

¡Relectura!

Review original

"I need you to promise me that you will never let anybody dim your light. It’s the most goddamn beautiful think about you. Don’t dim it for anyone. Ever."

¡Simplemente PERFECTO!

WOW...

¡No!

“I don’t know how much plainer I can be than this. I love you, and that makes you the most important thing in my life, regardless of anything else.”

Epílogo: No sé porqué tenía que acabarse. ¡No quería!

While the Darkest Link was Reid and Lia's story, it was also just as much about the continuation of Harper and Trent. I loved that this book got to be about Harper's brother and tying him to Lia, another Second Circle character. In the first book, we found out that Reid disappeared after the trial with Harper and Nathan and how much Harper missed her brother. Bringing Reid back into Harper's life while giving him his own love interest in Lia made this series that much sweeter. It also tied up loose ends about Harper's past. I've really enjoyed this series and was very happy to see a sneak peak for Jordan from Preload will be the next book. Ever since I read about him in The Purist Hook, I was hooked on him!

Great end to this series. We finally get the rest of the story of what happened with Harper's brother, Reid, as he gets his HEA. Reid first falls for Lia's long legs and then the rest not long after. There's plenty of story to go with the romance, sex, a fist fight, bad guy (but who is he after..Reid or Lia), friends, and a wedding.

There's a bonus chapter for the new series that will be the boys from Preload. Jordan's up first.

Getting your motor running just isn’t working for Lia, a highly talented tattoo artist, on her way to be a presenter at an influential convention. Luckily a knight in motorbike gear, riding his revving machine, comes to her rescue. Despite their mutual instant attraction, they don’t act on it but do keep in touch as he takes her broken down car to his garage for repair and helps sort things out for her. The rescuer is the garage owner who is known as Kenny, though his name is Reid. Little do either of them know they have a mutual connection through one of Lia’s friends . . . . As this connection is revealed the dysfunctional aspects of both their families are highlighted, especially her manipulative father’s attempts to blackmail her with her love for her mother into supporting his political aspirations.

There are secrets, dangers and so much more in this story as well as a developing romance making this an action packed, enthralling read. The characters are well developed and the fast paced plot has plenty of intrigue, mystery, twists and turns. It is superbly written addition to this series and I have no hesitation in highly recommending both the series and this novel to anyone who enjoys reading intricately entwined stories involving families, perils and romance with plenty of surprises en route. As an added bonus the ARC I read also had the first chapter for the author’s new series - I can’t wait to read more of that, too!

I was gifted a copy of this book by St Martin’s Press via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was awesome I just luvd it so so much.

I didn't really know how Lia's book was goin to go. I didn't know much about her. I luv her sense of style the whole 50s pinup is so sexy and just suits her so much. Lia as built the life that she wants even if it's not what her father wants for her she as worked so hard to get where she is. She luvs working at Second Circle it's where her family is its where the people she luvs are they mean a lot to her. Her relationship with her mum and dad isn't great her dad is pushy and basically what he says goes end of it couldn't stand him at al.

Reid is a great guy but he as been through a lot in the last 6 year. But he as built a life for himself that he should be proud of. His past in Chicago was hard and he had to get away he couldnt put any more problems on his family. He as dealt with what happened but there are still things that need to be dealt with he just didn't know how to sort them.

I luvd how Reid and Lia met she is so sexy he had no choice to stop and help the sexy woman. They were attracted to each other straight away the sexual tension was hot from the start. They were very hot together the relationship was sweet and I luvd how they fell for each other weven though it was fast it didnt matter they were just meant to be. These 2 character were a lot a like they both had to deal with family stuff and it was very hard for both of them.

The story was so good it had so many twists. When I thought nothing else would happen and things were goin good bam something else happened. It was just brilliant. I would highly recommend this book its had me hooked from the start is couldn't put it down. Like i said the story was really good the characters are so good. The men are so hot and are strong alphas and the woman are sexy and sassy luv the al but I have to say that Trent and Harper are just the best there my favourites through the whole series. But every main character in this series are so good if u haven't read them do.

This book was yet another perfect example of how you can write a romance without stupid and unnecessary drama between the main couple… just two adults falling for one another and dealing with all the shit that life throws at them :) I am now expecting that from every single Scarlett Cole’s book ;) this is the fourth and final installment in the Second Circle Tattoo series and even though technically it can be read as a standalone, because you get all the necessary info about our main couple in it, I highly recommend you to read the previous ones before diving into it :) they are all absolutely amazing and you will have soooo much backstory about some wonderful people who appear here as secondary characters :) I loved Lia before, and getting to know more about her in this novel was fabulous :) she’s a complex person who had to deal with a lot of stuff in her life… and by the way, giant yay for mentioning therapy so many times and how it helped her :) the same goes for Reid… he has a dark past and is doing his best to atone for certain mistakes… these two together are just… *sighs happily* :) once again, I have troubles putting all my thoughts into words, because I loved this story to pieces… Lia and Reid fell pretty quickly for one another and yet Scarlett Cole wrote them in a way that I absolutely believed that… a lot of things were happening around them, but they dealt with them together, you know… like adults… talking and communicating :) it’s definitely a very emotional read but I highly recommend you to add it on your tbr piles :)

4 stars for a fantastic series finish

This is the fourth and final book in the Second Circle Tattoos series. These books are inter-connected standalones and technically could be read on their own, however I would definitely recommend reading them in order - and before you read this book you should at least read the first book in the series The Strongest Steel. This book features the final tattooist from Second Circle to have their story told, Lia, and mysterious (and up until now, missing) Reid Kennedy, brother of Harper from book #1.

Lia is a strong, confident heroine with a quirky sense of style but who knows who she is, does what she loves and unapologetically enjoys her life. Her wealthy father has political aspirations and his own ideas about how Lia should look and what she should do with her life, and he makes it clear that she is nothing but a disappointment to him, but she holds firm to her unique style and the life that makes her happy. I loved her immediately!

When Lia’s car breaks down on a near-deserted highway, she is rescued by a scruffy yet gorgeous man on a motorbike and from that first encounter sparks fly! Amidst flirty banter and scorching looks, mechanic ‘Kenny’ organises for her car to be towed and repaired and though Lia isn’t interested in a relationship at all, there’s nothing holding her back from a hot encounter with her sexy rescuer.

‘Kenny’ is actually Reid Kennedy (Kenny is his nickname). After everything that happened with his sister, he left Chicago under a shroud of guilt and has lived a quiet life away from his family and the torment of his past. He owns and runs a small-town garage and spends his private time helping out local teens. He never expected Lia to come crashing into his life, or the intense feelings that he would have for her from the very beginning.

He needed desperately to explore what they could be together, because his gut was telling him that it would be special.

Lia and Reid’s chemistry literally explodes off the page. Their attraction is sizzling, and their banter and openness with each other is fantastic. They don’t hold back on how they’re feeling – or in the bedroom – and they very quickly find themselves on the precipice of something amazing.

“Just so you know, it’s totally your fault if I fall in love with you”
“The thought that you could makes me smile.”

And then Reid’s life is turned upside down. His inevitable meet up with the Second Circle crew brings his past screaming into the present when he is reunited with his sister after years of hiding. Full of all of the emotion, intensity, happiness and pain that you would expect from their long-awaited reunion, Reid and Harper commence the process of revealing secrets from the past, dealing with their anger and pain and finding a way to move forward together. And while Reid is struggling to truly deal with his past for the first time, Lia is right by his side, there for him and supporting him unequivocally, and it only serves to bring them closer together.

But Reid isn’t the only one having family drama. Lia’s family situation is way more messed up than anticipated and causes all sorts of issues, and everything is complicated further when danger from Harper and Reid’s past resurface. The new lovers are put to the test in ways they never could have imagined, and the danger, suspense and mystery make this one exciting ride.

This sort of storyline can often overshadow a great love story, but in this case I thought Scarlett Cole did a fantastic job of blending the drama and excitement with the romance. Lia and Reid certainly go through a lot, but I thought the way they handled it was mature and sensible. They hold nothing back from each other, standing by each other’s sides the whole way through, and with their relationship unfolding naturally and realistically despite everything that is going on around them, the dramas just became something else for them to deal with together, and I loved the way it all played out.

“I need you to promise me that you will never let anybody dim your light. It’s the most goddamn beautiful think about you. Don’t dim it for anyone. Ever.

Lia is a wonderful heroine, but it was Reid who absolutely stole my heart. He’s been through so much, but he is such a big-hearted, gentle man (with epic bedroom skills), and the way he opened himself up was gorgeous to see, and I loved watching these two fall hard and fast for each other.

“Would it scare you if I said I had fallen for you just a little bit?”
Reid leaned in and pressed his lips to hers. “I’d be fucking honoured.”

Of course the whole Second Circle crew are a part of the story – especially Harper and Trent – and I loved seeing them all loved-up and happy. There is an epilogue which finishes the story off beautifully and brings the series around full-circle (pardon the pun), and I finished this book with a huge smile on my face.

“I don’t know how much plainer I can be than this. I love you, and that makes you the most important thing in my life, regardless of anything else.”

I really loved this book. It’s a great mix of sweet, sexy, swoony romance with drama, suspense and excitement. It’s a great finish to a series I’ve really enjoyed and I’m looking forward to seeing what Scarlett Cole has in store for us next.

4 stars.

First it took me a really long time to read this not because of the content or characters which I loved, but because I had to put my beloved fifteen year old beagle, Frick, to sleep. She was ill and didn't suffer, so I've found comfort in knowing that. Now I am left with her depressed brother, who is in my profile pic and now requires a lot of my attention.

All in all I loved this series, all of the vibrant characters, the interesting story lines and I am sad to see the series conclude.

This is going to be quick because real life work is kicking my patootie, plus don’t have alot of word vomit in me at this point.

I liked it well enough. Lia and Reid are pleasant, the writing was pleasant, even if a bit cluttered, dependent on coincidences and DRAMA for drama’s sake at this point in the series. Kind of soapy to me in that way. Anyhoodle, it’s a decent enough read even though I was never passionate about it and the series never managed to reach the heights that the first book (which I will always love best) did. That said, I’d check out what’s up next for Ms. Cole.

Finally managed to finish this book after months being postponed.

What can I say? I like Scarlett Cole's writing and I definitely love the characters from this series.
At first I thought this would be my favorite in this series, but unfortunately this story still can't beat Harper and Trent story, for me.
But this is much better than the last 2 previous books.
I think the insta-lust/love theme is just getting old for me.
Lia and Reid only met for 5 weeks and they're already declared the L- word..

Scarlett Cole really good at writing angst, all books in this series contain angsts, but too bad I'm not really good with those because I'm not a very patient person. Angst stories really drive me crazy.

I think this book is the conclusion in the series?
But I feel like it's still lil bit cliffy..
What happen with Lia's parents?
What happen with the kids Reid teaching?
It's still so unclear, to me.

But I'm so looking forward to the spin-off of this series.
Thank you so much to author, publisher and NetGalley for always providing me ARCs of this series ♥

This was my first Scarlett Cole book and I had a great time reading Reid and Lia’s story.
It began like many other romance stories with “man meets woman in need of some help” and I thought “I’ve read this a thousand times” but rapidly, the plot gained substance. The characters were portrayed in a very realistic way with all their flaws, guilt and hope. Lia and Reid’s past, their strained relationships with their respective families and an unplanned threat to their lives raised my interest and I was able to fall into the book.

When Lia and Reid first meet it was not insta love but certainly insta lust. A big, hard-working and sweaty male meets a damsel in distress as her car broke down leaving her stranded under the hot Florida sun. I kept imagining the Wolf bulging’s eyes in Tex Avery’s cartoons when Reid sees Lia for the first time. She had red hair styled like a pin up from the fifties a polka dots umbrella, miles long legs and wore blue and white Mary Janes with bright red daisies as buttons. The poor man did not stand a chance…
Now, I could also picture Lia peeking through her long lashes to inspect this fine specimen of a hot biker. ”Something about the confident, almost cocky way he told her what to do had her insides tingling, and when he held out his hand toward her, she took it and followed him.”
To say they were attracted to each other is a euphemism.

Neither of them wanted a serious relationship but they fell hard and what began like a one night of fun soon turned much more.

Lia was a very endearing character. It’s the kind of girl I admire. She may come of money, her childhood was difficult with her father doing all he could to snuff her light out. She was like a bright colorful exotic bird and he wanted her to be a plain nondescript sparrow. He was a pushover, a tyrant and I could not stand him. The author did an excellent job of depicting him as arrogant, cold hearted, caring only for his career and manipulating his daughter and wife in doing his bidding. He never could stand Lia’s artsy side and hid her art supplies away to punish her when she was a child. But Lia was resourceful and hid some pens to draw on her skin. It all started her passion for tattoos. That’s what I loved most about her: her strength. She stood her ground went her own way, built her own style. And what style! I was in Heaven with her vintage look, reading about Mary Janes, polka dot dresses, ringlets, deep red lipstick and all. It was a girl’s dream. With her curves and style you can really say she owned her femininity.

Lia had been deprived of love for so long and witnessing all her friends finding true love she wished to find her own Prince Charming. ”She desperately wanted to be loved and needed by someone because she had been deprived of it for so long. There was a real difference between being wanted and being needed, and she craved the kind of love that left her breathless now that she understood what that was.”

Reid was her perfect counterpart. Opposites attract. He did not come from money, was hard working repairing cars and building bikes. He was all strong muscles hard planes and gruff whiskers to her soft skinned and curvy figure. He also had a lot of baggage. Without revealing too much, let’s just say he fled his past and was regretting his actions every day, trying to become a better man helping local kids. He was hard with himself and Lia helped him to see what he had become. ”You’re a good man. For the first time in a long time, he felt the balance tip. That the good he was doing outweighed the bad he’d done. Perhaps there was a way to move on, after all.”

I had a great time reading about their budding romance, about Lia’s friends that I’m sure readers of this series would love to meet again as they were the heroes of previous books. I also tried to guess who was behind all the misdeeds, just to be proven wrong in the end.

If you’re a fan of this series, I’m certain you won’t be disappointed. Even if this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone.

I was gifted a free copy of this novel by the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

I loved, loved, loved this novel, a fitting end to what has been a great series by a new author. Scarlett Cole has really found her niche and she writes with confidence and style.

Julianna 'Lia' Carlisle is the female tattoo artist at Second Circle, she favours the 1950s look (I picture her a bit like the cover on The Shameless Hour by Sarina Bowen) all red lipstick, pin-curled hair and corseted waists. Thanks to a legacy from her grandmother she is independently wealthy, unfortunately as they say money doesn't buy you happiness. Her father, Franklin Carlisle is a powerful lawyer with big political ambitions. Her mother has retreated into her shell, spending her time in a haze of prescription drugs and tending to her greenhouse plants. Lia has tried on several occasions to get her mother to leave her father and get proper medical help rather than the cocktail of drugs prescribed by a doctor more worried about her father's reputation than her mother's health.

When we last saw Lia I thought she was getting into a relationship with one of Dred's band-mates so I was surprised when the story took a different turn. On her way back from her father's home on Star Island her Plymouth Fury breaks down and she is rescued by a cute guy on a motorbike who just happens to own a repair shop. Reid 'Kenny' Kennedy, said cute guy, has fled a family situation and set up his own business in Fort Pierce as a mechanic although what he would really like to do is design motorbikes.

As Kenny and Lia develop a long-distance relationship while he repairs her car, the issues with Nathan and Harper back at Second Circle have not gone away. Soon Lia and Kenny are drawn into the problems in more ways than one. When a speeding car guns straight for Harper, Trent, Lia and Kenny is it Nathan trying to get revenge or is someone else the target?

In this fourth book of the series Scarlett Cole is less about life at Second Circle and more about the people. All the previous couples feature in the book but Lia just dominates right from the get-go with her sexy 1950s clothing and her full-on make-up. If ever there was a strong, sexy woman she is IT. Kenny is a fitting foil to Lia's brilliance, he even notices that his life seems devoid of colour when she has gone.

This book brings the series arc to a satisfying conclusion. There's the usual suspense but in a less 'out there' way. Oh, and there's a wedding!

I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes tattoos, rockstars, Miami, reality TV, scheming politicans and fashion!!! Recommended for fans of Sarina Bowen, Elle Kennedy and Kristen Calllihan's NA books.

This is my first book in the series so I look forward to going back and catching up. It's a really good book but it is, or at least for me, was an emotional read.

There is so much turmoil surrounding Lia's family that she can't get out of town fast enough to get to the tattoo expo she is speaking at in Florida. So much so that on her mom's birthday she over hears her dad talking to someone about bringing her to heel and having to work on her mother before beginning his run for governor. She has brought he mom a birthday gift, which her dad has forgotten, and when they hear her dad calling for her her mom tells her to leave out the doors in the back so she doesn't have to see her father who is never nice to her or her mother and never has anything good to say about or to her.

On the way to Orlando her car breaks down and that is when she meets Kenny (Reid) as he pulls up behind her on his motorcycle to help out. They shamelessly flirt with one another and when he finds out he cannot fix the car immediately he drives her to Orlando and then takes her to dinner before driving back home.

Her career is on the rise, her family is falling apart and she is pretty sure she could love Reid. She decides though that she will be a big girl here though and go feed her desire and then go back to Miami. When she arrives back at Kenny's he is surprised but so very excited to see her again and they negotiate for 24 hours together, after all he has his own stuff too.

Reid has been away from home for six years at his dad's request and subsequent threats. He misses his family and feels guilty about what happened to his sister at the hands of his best friend. He is trying to be a good man but deep down he knows he doesn't deserve that title.

When he decides to make a surprise visit to Lia the past literally collides with the present in the form of a first to the face and everyone is shocked that Harper's brother just pulled up outside that tattoo store.

In all the family drama Lia and Reid decide to hang on to one another and fight for what they have and that may be what saves their lives.

This is a complicated book with all its twists and turns but it's a good book with shocking secrets revealed and courage is found among turmoil and love.

It's no secret that from the moment I finished The Strongest Steel I was screaming from the rooftop this woman was going places and everyone should take note. I said it them and I'm repeating now. I can't even with this woman right now and her words ... #flawless

I'm not gonna lie and tell you I jumped up and down when I realized Reid was getting a story until I realized how perfectly complete the series would be if he did. And it wasn't because I had some pre-hate for him ... no, it's because Harper and Trent are #my people and I honestly didn't want my heart to possibly shatter ... again. But of course I was pleasantly surprised because Scarlett Cole is a magnificent writer and she managed to fit that aspect of the story into the book without it becoming center stage or overwhelming Reid and Lia's journey ... #flawless

The Second Circle Tattoo series is a family. That being said, even tho technically you can read each individual book on its own, I don't recommend it. And I strongly urge to make sure to at least read The Strongest Steel before you read this book. If you haven't figured out why yet, just trust me :)

I loved everything about both Reid and Lia. From their chance meeting on the side of a highway to their shared love of all things vintage to their individual journeys to their shared journey. It all felt meant to be. And it felt real. And it was complete. For lack of a better term....full circle :)

There are a lot more aspects of this story I could hint about but I think I'm going to stop here because all you REALLY need to know is that this story is beautiful, it's well written and just #flawless :)

This series is amazing.. Every character is so different.

Lia. She is such a strong woman, she's kind and compassionate.. The love she has for her mother shows so much throughout this book. I love how she was with Reid, how she tried her best to not let her feelings rule her, how she tried to take a step back but yet couldn't as her feelings were so strong. I loved her style, how comfortable she was within herself, it shone in this book. Her friendship with Harper grew in this which was great to see.

Reid. Oh Reid! My heart hurt for him from the very beginning. His story is full of self-guilt and it's a great way to show the impact of what happened to him after the attack on his little sister and how he feels as though he's at fault. To me, it didn't feel like an abandonment it felt like a man wracked with guilt doing what he felt he had to. Reid is a total swoon.. He's so loving to Lia. I loved them together.

This book was so great. There were a few unexpected twists and turns that had me in shock.

It was a great way to end the Second Circle Tattoos Series.
I'll be sad to see them all go!

With “The Darkest Link” the 4th book of Scarlett Coles is thrown into the “Second Circle Tattoos” series.

And with Reid finally getting his story it feels like the series has come to a full circle (pun intended)

We have been waiting (or at least I did) for Reid’s story for what feels a really long time and it feels deserved.

I feel the story around Second circle has developed a lot from a solid romance into something more. With a little suspense added, some bad guys and the usual set of not so likeable parents.

While we meet all the couples from the previous books again as secondary characters it is really Lia that steels the show with her style alone. She is described so vividly that the reader cannot help but see her come alive during reading.

I think from all the female characters described in this series, she is the one that will remain in the readers mind when thinking of this series.

I am kind of sad to think this book will bring the conclusion to the series but on the other hand I am satisfied with the circle …

Enjoy.

This was an interesting conclusion to the series. It is a little hard to review without spoilers, as there are a lot of interlocking pieces and a lot of things that are revealed in this that will be spoilers for the previous books.

What I can say are Lia and Reid are interesting, and they are compelling. All of the Second Circle books have seemed, in my opinion, to be a little above normal with the events that happen...but at the same time, they work. This one is no different. I believed it, I liked the characters, and I was cheering for Reid and Lia to find their happy ending.

What I can say, if you have read all of the others, you will enjoy this one. If you haven't, I recommend the others first, for the spoilers this one contains.

The writing is strong, and the pacing is also strong. I recommend this book.

This couple has strong sexual chemistry from the moment they meet. The sex scenes were quite steamy. There is a connection between these two that you can feel. These two people are connected and make it work because of the love they have for one another, even if it happens fast. They both have issues in their lives they need to to workout and overcome. Once they figure it all out, they get their happy ending. This was a good read. This book has some danger, friendship, family, bikes, cars, tattoos, sex, and love.
