He thought his new neighbors in Magic, NM were weird. But he’s in for an even bigger shock the night he answers the door and finds his ex-girlfriend standing on his front steps. His very, very dead ex-girlfriend. She was gorgeous and annoying when she was alive … now she’s scary.

Grayson Stark is a gifted artist, painting oils that bring high prices. No one knows just how gifted—he paints from his dreams. Until his studio is trashed with violence that shocks even the police. Now he’s lying low in the last place anyone would look for him … a little town called Magic. He's even getting used to the strange mix of townspeople. Until the night his ex-girlfriend knocks on his door.

Brynne Polson remembers dying. She can’t believe she has another chance at life with her hot, brooding boyfriend … except Gray doesn’t seem all that thrilled to have her back, they’re far from home, and she has a strange female voice in her head. And just how does a woman gain ten pounds while she’s dead, anyway?

E’ea, a Galactic Guardian, brought back Gray's true love from the dead. In Brynne’s body, she'll keep him safe from the assassins who want to stop his painting before he reveals any more of the future, then leave the couple together. There’s just one problem—neither of them seem to appreciate her efforts. She must keep them alive and show them their importance in the future of the galaxy. At least this backward little planet has cheeseburgers.

Grayson the selfish artist and Brynne the clingy dead chick.
Well that was a strange tale!
Set in S.E.Smith's world of Magic New Mexico, Grayson is an artist who paints from his visions. Someone doesn't want him to paint though and is set on killing him. For his own safety he moves back to his grandma's house in New Mexico. Next thing he knows, his girlfriend Brynne shows up at his door dripping water from her watery grave where she died a year ago.
Her job is to protect him, but it isn't really her, well it is, but it is also someone else.
The night she died, she had left upset after a fight with him where he was pushing her away without really talking to her first. Basically he was a total ass. She had been too clingy and the more he pushed her away the clingier she got. Now that she is back, Grayson learns some things about her that he hadn't bothered to learn before because he took her for granted.
It was a really neat story and I enjoyed it, but I wish Grayson had been a better person. His inner thoughts were so cutting when it came to Brynne. I wasn't convinced he truly cared for her before, although I was convinced that he cared for her in the end. One thing that I truly appreciated about the epilogue was that they get couples counseling! It was a pretty cute epilogue.

Aglow

The idea of light beings is not really a new one. The humor that Cathryn Cade was able to insert into the possession of the women was refreshing an I recommend checking out the series about the Starks. Cool.

I was not familiar with the world of Magic, New Mexico but I love the work of Cathryn Cade so was thrilled to give it a try. I’ll admit to being a little worried about the dead girlfriend as the idea of zombie sex squicks me out but the author handled it beautifully. Guarding Grayson is a bit like the Terminator meets Roswell. It will take you on a fun ride of imagination. Really well done.
