A New Kind of Leader

Rate this book
You probably have a short list of people who impacted you during your childhood and teenage years. When those individuals intersected with your world, they became a new kind of leader for you.

They were not new in the sense that they had never led anything before or they were radically different from other leaders.

But they were new because …
their influence gave you a new direction.
their belief in you gave you a new sense of worth.
they showed up at a new phase of your life,
and their faith helped you solidify your faith in a new and authentic way.

If someone showed up for you, then the question is, "How will you show up for someone else?"

A New Kind of Leader explores seven beliefs and practical applications that will cause you to reimagine how you influence the next generation.

Because when you hold the door open for a kid, you hold the door open for the future.

The concept of this book is fantastic. I think the idea should have been conveyed in an infographic.

Are you passionate about seeing the next generation thrive🕺🏻? Or, do you kind of cringe at the thought of having to spend significant amounts of time with children or teens😖? Do you know, have one or more of your own, or have at least seen a kid before👀? If you answered “Yes” to any of those questions, you should read this book!

Why do kids matter? Why is it important to invest time, money, resources, and care into kids from nursery 👶🏼 through high school👱🏼‍♂️? Will it even make a difference?

I think Reggie Joiner does a fantastic job at making the case that kids do matter! And our intentionality with them is so much more important then we may think and can make all the difference in the world🌎.

This book is super easy to read and extremely engaging and practical when it comes to the way we think about, and influence kids in the church⛪️.

If you’ve ever had a negative attitude towards kids at church, I challenge you to give this a read. If you’ve ever questioned whether or not you could make a difference as a volunteer in kid or student groups, I challenge you to give this a read. It may just change your heart ❤️.

If you are working with adolescence this book is for you. In today's culture we need to have a better understanding of how to lead children and teens. In this book Joiner gives us some simple and applicable steps to achieve the goal of preparing adolescence for adulthood. We only have a short number of weeks to be influential in there lives, what are you going to do to make the most of it?

Succinct and thought-provoking. It will take less than an hour to read, but it is chock-full of gems. Read and then read again.

If you work with kids or students, this book is an incredible resource for your leaders. I'm buying multiple copies to hand out.

Great insights from a phenomenal leader. Reggie gives practical tools to (us) the leader of students/kids. I love how Reggie encourages leaders and the church to be the church. Just like kids/teenagers need adults the same is said for adults, we need kids/teenagers. Together, we form the beautiful multi-ethnic bride on mission, united by faith!

Great read...

The information was very practical and definitely helpful. The purpose of this book is not to be a major "how to guide." For anyone that's been I. Children/Youth ministry it will be a great refresher and reminder of why we do what we do. I'd recommend the newbie and the veteran read this and be sure to be a leader that matters!

In over a decade of doing ministry, this is the most practical and inspiring resource for volunteers (who work mainly with children and teens) that I have ever read.
As the church, we have a limited amount of time and influence with our young ones - "A New Kind of Leader" leads you to maximizing the impact you have on young people and also doing it with a Christ-centered perspective.

Read this as I started to volunteer in the children's ministry at my church. I'm not sure how much of the more specific advice applies since I work with 1-2 year olds haha. It did have some good advice, but there were a few ideas that seemed a bit disconnected from the main point of the Great Commission that needed to be clarified a bit more.

There is no other resource that I have so desperately want to put into the hands of church leaders and workers. Quick and easy to read yet very potent in content.

The message is challenging yet so practical. I can't recommend it enough.

I’m constantly amazed at how simple ideas can blow my mind. I read this book with some others from church who work with teenagers, but really I think it gave me fresh ideas for parenting just as much as working at church. I’m going to read it again for sure!

This is a great book that encourages readers to engage with a lead the next generation toward Jesus. It’s extremely encouraging and practical. If you lead a team of kids workers, I recommend this for your volunteers or staff.

Good book to give a person something to think about, or maybe an introductory to the process that Reggie Joiner writes about.

A New Kind of Leader is perfect for first-time volunteers and veterans alike. It is a quick read, yet strategy-packed book filled with wisdom on how to lead the next generation well. I would highly recommend giving this to every church leader no matter where they are serving in your church, because their service trickles down and affects the children, teenagers and parents who walk through your front doors.

Here are a few nuggets of truth:
- What you do now for a kid is more important than what you do for them later as an adult
- You aren't leading kids anywhere if you have no plan
- Nearly 75% of people don't go to church (This was a eye-opener for me)
- What happens at home is more important than what happens at church
- Irrelevance paralyzes truth. (In other words, be a relevant leader)
- Sometimes kids will understand a little more about God when they do something God made them to do
- One of the reasons students struggle to connect with the church is because we invite them to something that is static and uneventful
- Kids need a leader who will keep on showing up (Preach!)
-You typically don't realize in the present how you are affecting someone's future

I thought this might be just a repeat of other Orange books and philosophies. While it does reinforce some of the core principles of Orange/reThink, this is a book that everyone who volunteers with kids and teens at church needs to read. Every children's minister, youth minister and family minister needs to read it. It doesn't matter if your congregation uses a large group/small group format with kids and teens or if it uses a traditional Bible class format, this book provides the reason WHY you should be involved with teaching and guiding the younger generation. It addresses many of the excuses people give for why they can't or won't volunteer. If you are struggling to find and retain volunteers to work with kids and teens at church, this book will provide you with the message you need to convict adults to step in and help and to continue helping. It provides the reason why your work is life changing for you, the kid and the world.

I gave this 3 stars not because of the bottom line content, which is solid, but because it was all re-purposes content.

If you have already ready any of the Orange material then I would say don't get this book it is only repeat of what you have already read. I think there should be some disclaimer on the back cover of this book explaining this is what is going to happen. I would have saved my money since I already am on board with the Orange thinking.

Bottom line: Good, solid content but repeat of what is already out there. No new nuggets or expansion.

Great book for a quick refresher of the Orange strategy or to give as a gift to volunteers or have your staff/leadership team read and discuss. Really liked the prompts and ability to write in the book!

Short and simple. This book is a fast read, but Reggie gives a great overview of some principles that make up an effective small group leader. It would be perfect for new volunteer leaders on a youth ministry team if you utilize the reThink groups Orange philosophy.

Insightful and fantastic. Quick read that answers the question, "Why should our church make kids a priority?"

P.s. I'm not a fast reader and finished it in an hour and a half, so go for it :)

Excellent!

This book is about leading people, not just kids or teenagers.

Buy a couple of copies. You'll want to give them away.

Keep it close, it will remind you of what matters.
