Infernal Hunt #1

Infernal Ties

Rate this book
The Hawke twins are hunters. They keep the supernal community of Prague in line, and they’re good at it. The witches whisper their names when something goes bump in the night, and the lycans tell stories of them to make their cubs behave. When Quin doesn’t come home after what should have been a quick rogue-disposal, Evie begins to worry.

Evelyn Hawke is a force to be reckoned with. Nothing and no one will stop her from getting her twin back. She’ll do whatever it takes, even dive into the supernal world and work with those she despises to find Quin and dig him out of the very large hole he’s got himself into.

Little does she know the far-reaching consequences of her actions.

Infernal Ties is the prequel novella, sitting at some 30,000 words.

Infernal Ties begins the larger plot.

I really really liked this book, in fact there was only one thing about it that kept it from being perfection. That one thing is that it is a story of just one person out to save their twin brother. In every other book I have read by this author there have always been a minimum of 2 people out to save someone or the world. I find that I prefer it that way... Evie felt seriously lonely already since it was her twin Quin (see that I rhymed there) that needs saving and while Evie did have to go through meeting an array of others on her journey she still was alone. So OK that is just a matter of preference on my part and in no way makes the book bad. Oh.. and I can't wait to see what happens when Quin kisses Kadrix!!!! All in all, this novella was a quick and very enjoyable read... Now I am gonna shut up cuz I NEED to read book two!!!!!

Whoa what?!

This is an uber fast paced urban fantasy. While I was entertained some of the time, it slowly degraded into eye rolls as the plot turned into a video game. She runs around trying to find her brother while she is attacked repeatedly and given mini quests to complete by multiple supernaturals to get info on him.
I was honestly surprised at how shallow (and oblivious) she was and how slitting throats was her way of dealing with...most everything. It was a change for the heroine to be the dumb brute.

Ends with an opening for more. I'm not eager to read the next but I'm interested in more world building.

I liked the sound of the plot but for me I just didn't enjoy this one at all.

I felt no connection to Evelyn. She is cold, rude and unpleasant and swaggers into every situation with rude and confrontational attitude and then demands information. The alchemist is right when he says that she marches in and demands help with no regard for anything except what she wants. I don't particularly like her. She admits that she has made no attempt to be friends with other hunters or to gather allies, then she is surprised when pretty much everyone she goes to for information would rather kill her than help her? I can fully see their point.

Quin is obviously the good twin, who gathers friends and allies and tries to learn new skills that will aid them both. He likes to learn about alchemy which might have helped Evelyn find him had she not admitted that she chose to learn nothing about it and did not even listen when Quin tried to talk to her about it. Learning how to distinguish between his simplest powders and how to use them might have aided her healing and her search, but she never bothered showing interest in anything he was doing. She also spends a fair bit of time moaning that he has left her to deal with everything and she doesn't know what to do, as she was used to him dealing with all the difficult things. I find her frustrating and annoying.

The rest of the characters are unpleasant. Everyone is rude, evil and nasty and the locals of Prague are represented as a rude and unfriendly bunch of people, which does not greatly excite me when I'm trying to get into a story and enjoy it. The pattern for the book seems to be that Evelyn insults someone who hates her, gets into a fight and runs home, along with glaring at everyone she meets on the trams. Is she ever nice to anyone???

The book is also very descriptive. Even if she just goes into a building for a few minutes, there is a full description of what it looks like, and then a page later she goes in somewhere else and the pattern repeats itself again. I found this description unnecessary and would have preferred a bit more worldbuilding about the supernatural world instead of the architecture of Prague on every page. It also felt repetitive with the same pattern of fight and move on to the next target, repeat.

Overall it just wasn't gripping me with plot or character and I did not finish it.

I'm a sucker for siblings and urban fantasy so this was a fun read for me. It's cool to see a brother-sister team as well because usually it's two brothers or SOMETIMES two sisters. Evelyn was a cool character and I can't wait to get to know Quin better because he seems very interesting and I definitely think he's needed to balance out Evie's brashness. He wasn't really in this novella because he was too busy being a damsel in distress while Evie was figuring out how to rescue him [nice!]. I hope the plot of the next novel is a little bit more intricate because my only small complaint with this one is that it seemed to run on video game logic. By which I mean Evie just like goes to person A who tells her to go talk to person B who gives her a thing she needs to take to person C who then sends her off to fight person D and then she has to go back to person B who gives her another thing and sends her off to fight person E etc etc. It was fun but it got a bit ridiculous after the fourth like 'mini boss battle' so I'm hoping having both siblings in the next one will give it a little bit more variety.

I feel like this is a book that wanted to be an action movie. I got through the first six chapters and I just couldn't go on. Maybe it's the writing style but everything was just too bouncy and disjointed. It was just so action oriented, I feel like it was too over the top. Almost as if it was so over the top to distract from the writing. I can't give an accurate page number since this edition doesn't have pages, maybe that'll be fixed in the future.

The first novella in an urban fantasy series. Can be read as a stand-alone.

Evelyn and Quin Hawke are hunters who keep the Prague’s supernatural beings in line. Evelyn is a strong, grim fighter and Quin is a charming negotiator who is fascinated with alchemy. He also acquires magical potions and powders which can negate magic or heal. Evelyn hates magic and trusts only a few people in addition to her twin Quin.
Now, Quin has disappeared and Evelyn is starting to first worry and then become frantic. She goes out to meet with people who might know something about her twin’s disappearance, but they just make her run dangerous errands. She’s really starting to lose her patience and she doesn’t like almost any of the people she’s forced to see.

This was a fun, quick read. I rather like action heroines like Evelyn. However, she made no effort to think about the situation, she just ran from one place to another hoping to find something relevant. It seems that Quin is the brains of the duo and without him Evelyn doesn’t really know what to do, except demand answers with her fists and knives. She’s angry and grim most of the time. But underneath, her emotions are churning. She’s rude to the people she meets and dislikes almost everyone. She’s also very worried about Quin and at one point she cries when she thinks about her former boyfriend.

The world-building was very interesting. I’ve never been to Prague but it was very nicely described. This world has witches, werewolves, necromancers, and various undead. It also has several kinds of fairies, including the sidhe and redcaps. Also, alchemists seem to play a big role.

Evelyn and Quin are orphans and one of the people Evelyn meets hints that their parents had some secret the twins never knew. But we don’t find out more than that. Other than that, the story can be read as stand-alone. It’s described as a prequel to the Infernal Hunt so it’s nice to see a complete story. Even though Evelyn and Quin are twins, they don’t seem to share any mystical bond which was another nice change from most twins in fantasy.

This review is featured on my blog: Writerly Bookish Stuff.

Evelyn Hawke is a hunter. The world as we know it, isn’t really all it seems. Supernatural creatures lives among the humans and it is up to Evelyn, and her twin brother Quin, to keep them in line. Only, Quin is missing.

It’s been a while since I’ve read an urban fantasy that I have enjoyed as much as this novella. Evelyn is a fiery, no nonsense MC, and her quest to find her brother is the sole driving force behind the narrative. Evans creates a solid relationship between the twins from the start via Evelyn’s inner monologue.

There are lots of things to go bump in the night, and nothing is free in her world. If she wants information, she has to pull a favour. The narrative moves along at a fast but steady pace, and the action keeps readers on their toes.

Another highlight is that the novella is set in Prague. It was refreshing to read and visualise the area, architecture, and culture. Most urban fantasies are set in America or the UK, so Prague was a hit for me.

There were times when I felt like I was dealt the same snippets of information twice, especially to do with Evelyn’s old love, but I could easily over look that considering the descriptive prose and well thought out narrative.

If you want a quick, fast paced, urban fantasy read, check this series out.

2.5 stars. I wanted so badly to like this. It sounded so good that I even got the next book before starting this one. Unfortunately I found it kind of boring. Evie & her twin brother quin are human monster hunters. Quin doesn’t come back from a hunt one night. Evie goes out looking for him. Evie looks for Quin by approaching members of the supernatural, asking if they have seen Quin then beating up and/or killing them. I am about halfway thru and that is pretty much all that has happened. There are no cool characters, in fact there don’t seem to be any secondary characters at all. It is also sadly lacking in humor, banter and sarcasm (all things I like from my kick ass urban fantasy). It is just dull.

Ok it did improve a little in the second half, and there are actually 2 secondary characters that Evie meets up with and doesn’t kill. The stuff with Serena was interesting but some more detail about the villains and the what, why & how of their plot wouldn’t have gone astray. I may still red the second one seeing as I have and I really do WANT to like it but it will need to grab my attention early in the piece or I am done.

Evie and Quin are twins who fight to protect their city, Prague, from supernatural enemies. This is the first book on their adventures, with the setup being Evie searching for Quinn after he’s gone missing. It’s quite frankly a wonderful adventure with a great set of characters (and Evie is just the sort of kick-a** character I adore) and a wonderful setting in Prague, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. (That’s actually my only complaint. Having been to Prague many times I wish the author had shown even more of the city - but it’s not something that almost anyone else would notice.). I’m hooked on this series after this one book and definitely looking forward to book 2.

Highly recommended.

For the first book in the series, it wasn't bad. Moved along pretty quickly. I kind of wanted more right away but at the same time, I didn't need more. I am curious to see where things go as everything was just starting to come together and am wondering how the relationship of the twins is going to build throughout the series. Will she finally let him learn more? Will he become more of a fighter? I don't know but I'm curious to find out!

Somehow this book managed to be both painstakingly slow-paced and simultaneously rushed, so that's quite an accomplishment. It took me forever to get into it, and the majority of the book has a "treasure hunt" kind of feel where the MC gets a clue and goes from one to the next on a search for her brother. Despite this string desire to find her twin, I never understand her motivation -- no development of her or her twin. Then it suddenly ends. Like this.

This is a fast paced book with a storyline that had many of the elements I enjoy the most. I love stories with strong female characters that don;t back down when there is danger. It is full of action and plenty of surprises. It starts a little slow but quickly gets you involved.

I am looking forward to reading more of the series.

Kick-ass female character?Checked.
Urban Fantasy? Checked.

This was a relatively short read for me and before I knew it, I was done. Not bad but I think it could be better in terms of the fighting scenes. At one point, I was like, "Oh, she's gonna do that again."

Still, it was a nice read and I look forward to reading the next in the series.

My first read from author Holly Evans, Infernal Ties was short and well-written, the characters developed in such a way that you get invested in them and want to see the outcome. The storyline lineally developed. I'll read more from Holly Evans.

Main character not very likeable (and really obsessed with the trams?). No backstory...why are they hunters? More world building, why is every magical race the enemy?

I was fortunate to receive an ARC of this novella. I've been looking forward for this series to kick off, and was not disappointed!

I *love* kick-ass female leads (I mean, who doesn't?), and Evie is definitely one of them! She's very unapologetic and willing to do what must be done to reach her goal, even if that something includes stepping over corpses and cutting fingers off dead people. But enough with the teasers :D

Infernal Ties takes place in a Prague where supernatural beings exists everywhere, without most people ever realising it. Evie and her brother, Quin, are hunters - trained to hunt down supernatural creatures and kill them. They are both rather good at what they do, so when Quin goes missing Evie doesn't waste time in trying to find him.

Even though Quin is missing and we don't get to meet him directly, I still felt like I knew him enough from Evie's stories about him. Evie and Quin are twins with some major differences - the biggest one being that Evie hates the supernatural community and doesn't try to hide it, whereas Quin is fascinated by it and tries to learn what he can and has an open mind. Evie sees enemies in every elf, vampire, werewolf and witch while Quin is trying to learn from them. I'd love to see Evie develop a more open mindset, but something huge would need to happen to change her mind I think.

The supernatural's incorporation into our world is seemless and interesting - the idea that elves, vampires and werewolves (and everything in between) are everywhere and we just don't realise it definitely had my attention! And that there's a powerful witch with my name, if in pronounciation only, certainly earned cookie points, too ^^

One refreshing thing is that there's no love aspect to this novella. At one point I thought that Evie might develop something with the elven alchemist (yes, despite her hating all supernaturals) but it seems like he might be more interested in her brother, which I'm so very okay with <3 I'll keep my hopes up for the sequel. Pretty please?

Since this is a short novella it was a very fast read for me, and I finished it in no time. That there are fast-paced action scenes everywhere helped that along as well.

Infernal Ties is an exciting novella which sets up the storyline well and promises a great series!

Like every other review I have, I'll tell you the summary first: Evie's twin brother goes missing unexpectedly and she has to go on a mission to find him. Along the way, there are alchemists, zombies, witches, and so many other mystical beings.

Now my thoughts. This book was beyond amazing. Holly's descriptions of... really everything were so great. I could imagine exactly what she was telling as if I were there.

The characters were all.... what's the opposite of flat? I don't remember, but whatever it is, they were that. :P

Being a novella, the plot was incredible. My initial thoughts were that the story wouldn't be able to go very far because the concept seemed so minuscule, but she made it work and it was honestly brilliant.

The action was my favorite part of the whole book. The descriptions were great, they were well placed in the story, it didn't feel too rushed or too drawn out, and it kept me wanting to know what happens next. It's also a bonus that Evie is completely badass and it just makes everything that much better.

This would be in my top ten for recommendations and I feel like so many people will enjoy it. :)

I have a system for rating books. I give a book a star for each of the qualities I love in books (but I also take into account the other qualities to make my final decision). I ask myself if I liked each of the things and then give a star for each. 1 for likable/relateable characters, 1 for the overall plot, 1 for the overall writing of it (like if it was easily readable and flowed nicely), 1 for sarcasm/humor/wit (of course, this doesn’t count in all books, but I do love when some characters are sarcastic and the writing has some humor), and the last star would be for if I would re-read it again.

I loved the characters, I loved the plot, I love the writing, Evie was definitely pretty sarcastic and witty, and I would for sure read it again.

I'm going to keep this review spoiler free because I don't want to give anything away to those of you who haven't read it. You'll just have to read it for yourself, won't you? ;)

From the very first page of Infernal Ties, I was transported into a whole new world. A world that is filled with fantastic, supernatural creatures such as witches, elves, and lycan. A world that just so happened to be centered in Prague. The descriptions of city and the places within are a treat for the eyes. I was absorbed and immediately lost in the story, loosing track of time, the world around me melting away. It felt as though I was in the seedy backrooms, creepy cemetery, or running through the streets and back alleys.

Thanks to the beautiful and vivid descriptions in this book, I really want to go to Prague now. The powers that be should total use this for promotional material. Although they might want to put a friendly disclaimer in there about all of the supernatural shenanigans. Few things can ruin a perfectly lovely holiday like a run in with a rogue lycan or evil necromancer.

Infernal Ties opens with Evie’s revelation that her twin brother, Quin, is missing. She is tense and pacing around their shared flat, worried about what could have possibly happened. Holly does an excellent job of making the reader feel the anxiety and stress Evie is experiencing. And it continues throughout the entire book thanks to the expertly crafted first person POV—whatever Evie is going through, the reader is going through it as well. Feeling every kick, punch, stab, and every emotion imaginable.

Evie is my kind of heroine. She is moody and strong, smart and resourceful. Kinda very stubborn, sorta prickly and bit rough around the edges. She takes no crap off of anyone and it doesn’t matter if someone is three times her size, she will not think twice about kicking some ass.

Her loyalty and dogged determination is admirable and awe inspiring. I love how she is the one doing the saving and not the other way around. If I were missing, I would totally want her heading up the search party. She is a breath of fresh air and I cannot wait to read more about her in the following stories.

Infernal Ties is a thrilling urban fantasy novella that follows Evie, a hunter, through the streets of Prague as she searches for her missing twin. Encountering lycans, elves, witches and necromancers, Evie delves deep into a mystery that is bigger than her imagining and the end result is a tantalizing tale full of action, intrigue guided by a new butt-kicking heroine!

Evie is just one of the reasons why Infernal Ties is as amazing as it is. Holly has created a strong voice in her protagonist who knows how to fend for herself. She has a can-do, never-say-die attitude that burns like a flame within her and it infectiously leaps off the page! On the other hand, Evie's profound love for her brother and her drive to protect him is just as poignant, giving her a human side and a strong motivation to push her through every conflict.

And boy, is there conflict! Each step Evie takes on the road to reunite with her brother is fraught with obstacles and challenges that she has to face on her own ' for the most part. And that's another great part of the fun! The supporting characters! Kadrix. Elise. Serena. They guide Evie on, fleeting in and out of scenes, but leaving an impression nonetheless.

Holly knows how to craft a thrilling story and draws us into her world of Prague, creating such vivid imagery so that the setting becomes our own. She offers excitement and wonder with every page!

I only wish that it could have been longer! Because it was so wonderful!. The story set out in the beginning reaches a satisfying conclusion, but there are still so many questions that hang in the air and the promise of further adventures is just too much to deny. No sooner had I finished the last word that I wished for the first word of the next novel to catch my eyes!

If you're looking for a great urban fantasy and a new author to become enamoured with, then I highly recommend you purchase Infernal Ties and prepare yourself to be hooked!

Initial thoughts

I follow Holly Evan's blog so have been watching her progress in readying to publish her books. I have read snippets of her writing that she shared, all unedited, all mouthwatering. I was excited to read this!

Writing

The writing is brilliant. The action and description pieces are the best of the lot, though I would've liked a bit more dialogue. I felt as if I was in Prague. (And I really want to try a pastry now!)

Plot

The plot was intriguing, several thing were foreshadows for the next book that I need to know! There were a few thing I would've liked expanded on. How the supernatural community fit in with the normal humans, the rules as it were. How The Hawke twins fit in to become Hunters.

Characters

I love the alchemist. Full stop. We're done. Bye bye. Also his assistant.

Evie herself is brilliantly bad-ass. I actually felt sorry for some of the supernatural creatures who got in her way when she was on the warpath. I would've liked to known a bit more of the reasons why she felt the way she did concerning magic and the supernatural beings.

Overall thoughts

It was a quick read, written well. My favourites were the description of Prague itself and just the description overall, there's some many great one liners that had me smiling. I would've liked to learn more explanation and not as much fight scenes, but that just means I'll have to read the next one to find out!

Was it worth the read? Yes

Would I re-read? Yes

Would I read this Author again? Yes

I found this book difficult to get in to and very easy to put aside, even to read other books.

I hate leaving anything less than a four star rating for a book because authors spend so much time putting their hearts into their stories.

I think that once the lead character is no longer alone (I say this so as not to spoil it) she will be more likeable but for now she was OK if quite annoying at times. The story read kind of like a puzzle with some of the pieces either missing or placed in the wrong section. The story for me got more interesting near the end and it is only because of that that I have purchased the second book because this could really be a great series so here is me being optimistic.

Please don't let this put you off as you may read the book differently, your perception may be more in tune with the author, I may have being having an off day.

I was thrust into the world this author presents upon the first very sentence. She drew me in and didn't let go until the end.

While I want to keep comments to myself over the storyline so I don't spoil it for anyone else -- I found the writing engaging, descriptive and fresh and very easy to read.

Do yourself a favour and check this one out!

Leaves me wanting more...

Lots of action, well-developed characters, amazing descriptions of Prague. I really loved the main character, Evie, a woman who is equal parts bad-ass, concerned sister, and cynic.

The book completes a storyline, but leaves lots of room for more adventure. Can't wait for book two.
