This book talks very briefly on all the basic subjects you would want to know about Spartan culture. I was reading this other book as an introduction and it definitely wasn't doing the job but while reading this my political side fell in love with all the things the Spartans were doing to build their community! They didn't sell their women as profit which is one of the big reasons I was interested (no oppression)! They built everyone male or women to become a warrior for their beloved community. These guys and girls never want to leave their homeland because as this book says their greatest weakness is their homesickness. They may be big dexterous brutes but what they built is something to learn about and here you get to learn everything you need in a few short pages that is easy to understand and enjoyable to get through. This book is a big Spartan step into Greek culture.
This book is short but made even shorter when at the end of the chapters you know you'll hit a Summary section of that whole chapter.
You can literally skip all the sections go directly to the Summaries making this book 15 minutes long. You'll still get all the information that you need.
This would have been a 2 star, but I found myself actually reading some chapters more than others, so that's good. More than anything, I was just looking for a motivational book. This was a good read for that, but you don't really get a sense of suffering or what the child of this culture would have gone through in a day to day cycle.
Though the information in the book was not wrong, it was quite superficial. I did like the author's focus on how women were treated but on other subjects there was just not enough depth. It read like a quickly (and badly) researched thesis. On that note, I would like to point out the horrible grammar in this book. I don't think there was a single page that did not have at least one non-sensical sentence.
