It's autumn and Tovi and his friends are getting ready to celebrate Halloween. After Tovi’s decorated his house, the friends all meet at the farm to pick pumpkins. But what a surprise they get while they’re there! It gives them a good idea for a Halloween trick! Will their trick work? And will they get treats? Let’s find out ....
Tovi books are designed in a simple animated way to give young readers the impression of watching a short film where Tovi and his friends play out their adventures.
The books are aimed at children aged 2-6 (picturebooks), who hopefully will join Tovi in his mini-adventures, and learn something about life and the world around them. As the lovable characters in these books share a whole range of experiences, they learn about sharing, about helping each other, and most important, they learn the value of friendship.
You'll be surprised what an exciting time little penguins can have!

Amazon bestselling and multi-award-winning author Janina Rossiter brings her passions together in her work: painting and illustrating children's books.
As an illustrator and author, Janina was inspired to write "Diamonds, Hearts & Sea Stars!" and "123 Who’s Cleaning the Sea?" because of her concern for our environment. She is passionate about fighting climate change, protecting nature, and keeping the oceans free from plastic and other pollutants. Education is the key to understanding how each of us can make a difference. Our future depends on our actions
Janina created the illustrations for the Blue Ocean Watch video ‘The Song of Life’ relating to sound pollution affecting whales.
As an artist, she feels happiest when recreating images of the ocean in her paintings. “I hope that through my art and my love of the sea, I can make my voice heard and make a difference."
With the arrival of her first daughter, Janina's love for painting and drawing found a new lease on life and, before long, she combined her passion for illustration with the wonderfully inspiring world of children. Today she works as a freelance packaging designer, artist, illustrator and children's book author. She enjoys the creative energy of Paris, where she lives with her English husband and her two daughters.
Since 2014 Janina Rossiter has written and illustrated 9 picture books in the series Tovi the Penguin (TTP).
TTP - goes camping, TTP - goes away for Christmas, TTP - goes to London TTP - goes into space, TTP - goes into to the seaside TTP - goes trick-or-treating, TTP - goes on a treasure hunt in Paris and TTP - goes to Ireland
In 2017 Janina started a new concept series. Early Childhood & Middle Childhood concepts
1. "The ABC animal picnic" - A picture book that uses alliteration to help your child memorize the different sounds of each letter of the alphabet. (Early Childhood)
2. "1, 2, 3, Who's Cleaning the Sea?" A Counting Picture Book About Protecting Our Planet. (Early Childhood)
3. "Diamonds, Hearts & Sea Stars!" - A picture book about shapes found in the ocean and to raise environmental awareness in children. (Middle Childhood)
Read this book as a bedtime story for my son tonight. This book is another great Tovi read! He was decorating for Halloween and decided to visit his uncle's pumpkin patch to pick out a pumpkin. His friends joined him. Something happened there and they got scared. Then they got dressed up in their costumes and go trick or treating. There is humor and friendship in both Tovi books that I have the pleasure of reading. Highly recommend! My son loves it and it will definitely be a re-read for us.
I received a free eBook copy of this from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This was a quick read about penguins getting ready for Halloween, then trick-or-treating. The art was delightful, and I enjoyed reading it.
------------
Edit: 1/17/2019: I just re-read this, since I am reading the books of this series that I have on Amazon. And, I can say that I enjoyed it just as much the second time around.
As you know by now I basically read/review books which I’ve either won through the various giveaways I’m always entering or I’ve obtained myself. So when I’ve found an author I truly like, I’m always on the lookout for their next giveaway. I therefore feel fortunate to have won the giveaway for Ms. Rossiter’s latest addition to her Tovi the Penquin series.
Each of this author’s books are aimed for the youngest of readers so they can experience the joy of reading at an early age while at the same time educating them in some aspect of life. Tovi the Penquin goes Treat-of-treating introduces its young readers to Halloween, the holiday most children love besides Christmas. It teaches them that while on the outside things might seem scary, they’re actually meant as an opportunity for them to have fun.
The illustrations are perfectly keyed to the surrounding text, aiding in the visualization of it. This like all of the other two books I’ve already reviewed are guaranteed wanting to read over and over again; and in some incidents its young readers have been known to attempt reading them to their younger siblings, their pets or their toys. So it should come as no surprise I’ve given this book 5 STARS.
NOTE: The author has used the British spelling of certain words.
Another fantastic story about Tovi the Penguin! My girls really adore this series with its gorgeous colours and the cute adventures that this trio of penguins get up to. In this book, it's time to go trick or treating, but will Tovi and his friends get up to any mischief or get lots of candy?
I think each book in this series has been read and reread 50 times in our household. My 8 year old reads them to her 5 year old sister and then the 4 year old pretends to read them to her stuffed animals.
It's a charming series for kids with a sense of adventure and humour that parents enjoy too!
This is a beautiful Halloween story for little children. The pictures are drawn in a clear style with strong bright colors and Tovi is the cutest penguin. While not crammed, the illustrations have enough details to be explored and discussed. The story is easy to follow and only a little spooky, but in a very humorous way so that even youngest readers won't be scared.

Another delightful addition to the Tovi series... My daughter loves the adorable images as well as the fun adventures found in each of the Tovi books. This is absolutely a book we will be rereading on Halloween, and the rest of the year!
It's a good thing this was a freebie. I don't think I would have actually bought it, nor do I think I'd read this to my nieces and nephews.
The pictures are great. I love the bright colors and the scenes that Tovi is in as the story goes on. But I find that it's lacking any kind of lesson or message, which is usually, in my opinion, the point of children's books.
Plus some of the pages are condensed 2 to 1 page, and even on my newer, larger kindle, that's a pain.
This is a cute Halloween tale for preschoolers and young elementary school age children. The author has a series of books featuring Tovi, the adorable penguin. Tovi is decorating his porch with Halloween lanterns on a windy day. He decides that he needs pumpkins for a finishing touch, so he meets his penguin friends at the pumpkin patch. Soon after his arrival, Tovi feels a tickle and finds himself covered by the scarecrow’s sheet. Tovi’s friends are terrified because they think Tovi is a ghost. Uncle Martin straightens out the misunderstanding, but that gives the group of friends an idea on how to scare Uncle Martin on Halloween. Read the tale to find out how. The illustrations are beautifully done, and they fill the page on my Kindle fire.
Tovi the Penguin goes trick-or-treating is a cute Halloween story with colorful and fun illustrations. It is a good choice to read to little kids or for early readers.
This is the 4th Tovi book I've read with the kids. I have a 4 and 7 year old; both of them love the stories, partly for of the bright, beautiful illustrations and also for the short, easy-to-follow plots.
Tovi Goes Trick-or-Treating is another wonderful installment in the series. It once again has the bold pictures and reminds even the youngest readers that the scariness of Halloween is make believe: each costume has a person in it and jack'o'lanterns are just carved pumpkins. This book does require a little more attention to picture details than the previous books (it took me a couple glances to figure out how Tovi ended up in the scarecrow) but still a great little story.

Tovi the Penguin goes trick-or-treating by Janina Rossiter Have read others in this series and have enjoyed them. Colorful children's book about a penguin at Halloween time. Dark colored words in a gray cloud make it difficult to read. This one starts out when Tovi is searching for their pumpkin this year but spooky things happen. Relatives are able to scare one another making this very funny and silly at times. Other works by the author are highlighted at the end. Excerpt from Tovi Goes on a treasure hunt in Paris is included.
I'm a fan of Tovi. I used to read them for my ESL students when I was still teaching. Now I send the German versions to my niece. This one is done in the same tradition of cute dialogue and little surprises that are sure to please the young crowd. It's also a perfect seasonal book if you want to explain the concept of Halloween to little children.
4.5 Stars A gorgeously illustrated kids' picture book (toddler to preschool age children) with delightful characters and a lighthearted take on the theme of friendship. This book is part of the Tovi the Penguin series, although this one is the first book I have had the pleasure of reading about Tovi. Absolutely adorable!
This is a very cute children's book on the topic of Halloween. Halloween is about fun, especially for children, and that is exactly what Tovi and his friends are doing: having fun. The artwork in the picture book is warm and very fitting for the Halloween theme.
The drawings are very distinct with vibrant Halloween colors that jump out from the page. This book about searching for a pumpkin for a jack-o-lantern is written at about a fourth grade level, but the illustrations will really appeal to younger children.
an adorable little book for young children. Colorful and appealing graphics and a fun storyline. Guaranteed to want to be read time and again and not just on Halloween!
Cute little book for kid. Illustrations look great and it has a funny story for the little one. May serve as an introduction for Halloween. A good choice.
I won this book in a LibraryThing giveaway. It strives to teach young children about Halloween and how, sometimes, things are not as scary as they seem. Plus, the penguins are adorable.
A delightful book that helps explain the concept costumes and Halloween to young children. There are several Tovi the Penguin books now--I recommend the all.
The simple story and the orangy green-gray art were perfect for a quick read on Halloween. (I’m pretty sure that the uncle was just playing along when he saw them all dressed up on Halloween!) I couldn’t always figure out which penguin said what and the layout could have helped that more with consistent cloud word bubbles. Maybe I just don’t know each penguin’s character yet. I liked the teaser story pages for Tovi the Penguin Goes on a Treasure Hunt in Paris that were included at the end of this book. (The violet-gray-black themed art did not disappoint in this book sample. Simply wonderful!)
This is a very low-key children's story. The pictures are cute but I found it very confusing to read the text in the way it is written in the various bubbles and clouds. I download children's books occasionally on my Kindle to read to my grandchildren, and try to see each book from the eyes of a child, and based on my grown children and my 9 grandchildren, I don't think that this will be a great hit. I will read it to some of them and revise if I found my opinion changes on their reactions.
