Relationships can be tricky, especially when your ex is still hanging around. For Hanna, meeting Sophie marks the start of something new...but first she has to convince her ex girlfriend, Mel, to let her go. But Mel doesn't want to let go. Ever.
From the International Best Seller of 'Playing My Love'
Your cruel device. Your blood, like ice. One look, could kill. My pain, your thrill.
The plot. What happens when after years of being in an abusive relationship you find the right woman? Someone who makes you realize what you've been missing. Someone who truly cares about your happiness and loves you unconditionally. How far would you go to keep her? And what if your ex isn't willing to let go? Even if it kills you.
The characters. Sure, I suppose the main character of this book is Hanna and yes Sophie also plays a vital role along with Hanna's two closest friends Freddie and Julianne. But Mel... wow. She really is the toxic, manipulative, possessive, abusive, terrifying glue that holds the entire book together.
The writing. Once again Angela Peach managed to get me completely hooked from the very first page. She masterfully reveals tiny pieces of the backstory along with a couple of plot twists that will no doubt have you turning the pages like a mad woman. I haven't always been a fan of the way she ends her books but this one? She nailed it!
The special. Mel actually reminds me of two of my own exes; the manipulator and the stalker. Well, three if you also count the liar. She's like a combination of Alex Forrest from Fatal Attraction and Catherine Tramell from Basic Instinct. Cunning, sly, devious and an absolute delight to read about and thoroughly hate.
The negative. This has nothing to do with the writing of the book but I should mention that there are a lot of triggers in it. Angela Peach doesn't shy away from writing about them so keep that in mind.
The verdict. I started reading this book back in October last year and can't remember why I stopped. It doesn't matter though because this moment in my life right now really was the perfect time for me to read this. Full 5* rating!
The Personal. “You can’t choose who you fall in love with, and you can’t just fall out of love with them if they break your heart. ... You can’t stop being in love with someone. You just are, and then one day you might not be.”
And if you're very lucky like I was, you find someone who understands you better than you thought possible and in a crazy twist becomes the reason you're able to move on. You know who you are. Thank you.
This was a weird, offbeat story. At first, I thought this book would be about a stalker ex-girlfriend interfering with a burgeoning relationship which isn't quite right. Psycho ex-girlfriend fits, though.
No, this story is actually a paranormal read with a strong psychic bent. There are five different characters, six if you count the dog, that take the stage here and, for most of the book, it is told from the perspective of Hanna, the one with the mentally unstable ex-girlfriend. The rest of the cast is made up of Sophie, the new love interest, two of Hanna's best friends and Mel, the ex. All are interesting.
The book is written well and has the style of Hanna telling us a story. The first 2/3rds of the read is richly described and well-drawn out where we mostly get a day to day depiction. The last part of the book, though, jumps time gaps and I would've liked the author to keep in the style of fleshing out the story in more detail because it started to move too fast...namely, a reaction from Sophie didn't quite fit and I wanted more from Hanna.
The book has good drama, on a few different levels, some suspense, and a great twist I wasn't expecting. Mel, the ex, is an emotional sadist with a history of emotional blackmail, domestic violence, enjoyment from tormenting others, and generally erratic behavior. Those people do exist and they don't often make it into a story. And Hanna and Sophie are not squeaky clean paragons of health for love interests but they are a decent fit with each other and do have good chemistry.
Yes, there's some instalove here but the psychic piece accounts for some of it (so it gets a pass). And, for once, the two leads aren't model beautiful with tons of money so that I liked. Both find each other attractive but do others? Not sure.
If anyone has read "Playing My Love" by this author, they may remember that she gave us two completely different endings which I think most people hated for one reason or another. I actually refused to read one of the endings and picked the one I wanted. This time she definitely gives us only one ending BUT she leaves something open to interpretation. Argh. I'm not a fan of that. Tell/Show me your story. I don't want to pick but, since she's forcing me, I'm going with COINCIDENCE!
Is it worth the kindle unlimited or $0.99 (or whatever the author prices this at)...yes. It's a pretty good read and a different one at that. Because of that somewhat fast ending to the book and making me sort of pick out how the story ends, yet again, I put this in the high 3 stars.
If you're looking for a well written romance, great leads , amazing secondary characters, beautiful - strong friendship, another couple to root for, some really good / awkward humor, a loyal /cute dog that played an important role, delicious cakes and good coffee then look no further. This is fast paced, suspenseful, horrifying , exciting, full of twist and turns till the very end. Angela Peach is the Mistress of Feel Good Romance.
But wait, before clicking 'want to read or read for free', there's something you need to know... Ms.Peach has a really twisted mind. She adds another element into the story to highlight the phrase - Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.
Mel is a psychopath. Remember Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction? How about Jennifer Jason Leigh in Single White Female or Rebecca De Mornay in The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, well all those women have nothing on Mel.. She is in a league of her own. There are moments, I read with either my hand over my mouth or behind my neck to get rid of the mother of all goosebumps.
Just leave some of your logic behind - dive in and experience it without looking for any spoilers. I love 47 but this is a worthy read too.
The start of this had been drawn in and engaged, especially as what took place, was so different to what I assumed the story would be about – I was so wrong (which was fab).
I disliked Mel from the get go, and that dislike only intensified has things progressed, the author did well in depicting the manipulative and twisted nature of Mel. The connection between Hanna and Sophie was clear, but some of the scenes between them didn’t flow as potently as I wanted them to.
The first 48% or so had me overall absorbed but after that whilst I was mostly engaged, I wasn’t riveted.
"Smashing! Beyond my expectation and very enjoyable to read! Hanna is a lovely person but she has a Psyho brutal violent girlfriend Mel which is suicide and became a ghost. After becoming a ghost Mel can't move on and they are living together under the same roof. A lot of ghost thing happen which is for me is super crazy and funny.
Would have called this novel My Crazy, Violent, Dead Ex. A solid 3.5.
From the title alone, it's clear that A Darker Kind of Love takes a heavy view of lesbian romance. Hanna and Sophie have one major problem as they fall into soulmate love. Their love life would be perfect if it weren't for Mel, the Ex from Hell. I liked the new romance storyline and characters. The backstory for Mel and Hanna was well written.
I wasn't crazy about the crazy, violent, dead Ex. Mel is a horrible and despicable character. This is, however, the story that the author wanted to tell. According to what was said in the acknowledgements, the story was going to have different ending but it was changed for the readers. I don't believe that readers should have a say in what someone writes. An earlier book by this writer came with alternate endings. It didn't work for me stylistically but I read both versions. I'm glad that didn't happen in this book.
After reading other reviews I figured I'd give this one a shot. I'm glad that I did because it was a good read. The dialogue between the characters is very believable and the narration never gets confusing. I was hesitant because of the drama involving the ex, but it was handled very nicely. The paranormal aspect was a wonderful surprise and definitely made this much more enjoyable. I'm really looking forward to the next one in the series!
I have to say that I really enjoyed this book a lot, it was a bit different of the regular romance story, well developed characters well developed story and had me turning pages really fast I couldn't put it down. I wonder if we'll get a second book.
This book has everything from laughter to tears and a lot of loving and even a ghost. Very well written the suspense had me flicking quickly through the pages. Message to Angela " I thought you were going to do it again " ill leave it like that. To readers you will have to read it to find out. Norma
