Yeager's Mission

Rate this book
After a number of earthquakes hammer the Sierra Madre region of Mexico, Grupo Verdugo, a splinter group of cartel enforcers, takes control of the drug shipping routes through that territory. Caught in the middle, a small orphanage high in the mountains, desperate for supplies to care for the children and the battered earthquake victims, reaches out to Abel Yeager for help.

Yeager and his friend Victor agree to deliver the needed food and medicine. But Grupo Verdugo seems to have a special interest in starving out the clergy and forcing them to bend to their will. They send a man known as the Executioner to stop anyone daring to assist the people.

Yeager and Victor are in for the biggest fight of their lives as they are forced to move forty children, a dozen sick and injured patients, and one feisty doctor out of the mission and through mountains infested with vicious killers.

This second entry in the Abel Yeager series is a step down from the first one. Not uncommon in these kinds of things.

Yeager gets the call to help out a church in old Mexico. After an earthquake, it's cut off from the world and needs supplies. A cartel thinks it owns all the roads around there, so Yeager and company have to deliver.

Once they get to the church, things really get bad. The church has treasure, the cartel wants it, and there's a whole mess of other problems.

Not bad, but for a book about a trucker, there isn't a lot of trucking here.

Yeager and his quirky sidekicks return in this second Over-the-top action thriller of this series. Fans of shoot 'em up action should really like this one. And there's plenty of twists to keep you in suspense.

J. Scott Bennett does a fine job narrating this audiobook. His character voices are distinct and his pacing is appropriate to the story. This continues to be a series to follow.

NOTE: I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for this unbiased review.

Abel Yeager survived his last trucking adventure and he’s living a nice quiet life with the love of his life and her son when his buddy Victor “Por Que” Ruiz comes aknocking. After earthquakes screw up the Sierra Madre region of Mexico and the drug cartels are making things more difficult for relief efforts, Victor’s distant cousin, a priest at an orphanage, needs help getting a truckload of supplies in. Yeager can’t turn away, so off he flies in Victor’s helicopter. It’s a dangerous situation, but Yeager doesn’t like it when bad guys hurt innocent people. As far as he’s concerned they can kill each other all they want, but put women and children in harm’s way and it makes him want to put the big hurt on them. Only this time he might not make it back to Charlie and David.

Holy shit! I cannot express how much I lurve Abel Yeager. I have the Big Crush on him. Charlie better watch out! Just kidding. I have a Marine of my own. *winks* There is so much to love in this story that I don’t even know where to start. There are multiple POVs that all come together in the end, suspense, action, bad guys, good guys, mystery, love and humor all mixed together to make the tastiest of treats to read. I had the hardest time putting this awesome adrenaline-fueled story down. I did so only when real life forced me to. Real life is an asshat sometimes. And omg, that ending! I knew it! I won’t spoil what I knew, but I will say I think I know where Yeager and Por Que will be heading next. Maybe. Maybe the situation will be resolved in another way. But I hope I’m right in guessing the next adventure. *rubs hands together*

My only complaint, as in the last book, is the fact that Marine should be capitalized and there are no ex-Marines. Huge pet peeves of mine, but the rest of the story rocks so I only deducted half a bite (star) for what I (and every other Marine and their families) consider the hugest faux pas around. I wanted my husband to read this story. In fact, I know he would love it, but he refuses to read anything where Marine is not capitalized and he despises the term ex-Marine, so I guess I’ll have to wallow in my post-read nirvana all by myself.

Edit: March 2017
It took me over a year (from the time I read Yeager's Law), but I finally talked my husband into reading this series despite the Marine faux pas. He loved book 1 and he's on to book 2.

Having not read the first in the series I was worried about reading this.
But this is a great action read and although slow to start once it starts rolling there is just no stopping.

Another great book my Scott Bell! This book is as good as Yeager's Law It keeps you on edge and hard to put down. The only bad thing I can say and I say this because I am a Marine that I believe Marine should always be capitalize. Also Marines are never soldiers.

After devouring book 1, I eagerly jumped into this, and have to say that it was better than ever!! Victor asks Yeager to help him bring much needed food and medical equipment to an orphanage that has been cut off from help because of earthquakes. After the earthquake and with the police's attention elsewhere, a drug cartel have claimed the routes to and from the orphanage as theirs. They are not letting trucks through, so Victor’s cousin, a priest at the orphanage, enlists Victor and Yeager to help them. While sounding perilous, Yeager doesn't think it will be too much of a problem and agrees to help. Little does he know what's in store for him!!

Poor Yeager, he is just settling down with Charlie, in a quiet country house, when Victor comes knocking. He can't refuse to help him so agrees. He ends up going to a remote area to help the orphanage, but ends up in a fight for, not only his life, but the life of all the people in the orphanage! He is once again, an outstanding hero!!!

Charlie, meanwhile, is in her own fight for her life! Someone isn't happy with the events of the first book and wants revenge. With Yeager gone, can Charlie survive and keep herself and her son live?

Once again, Scott Bell has written another amazing and action packed adventure!! This book has so much going for it! So many twists and turns, it's not all action either, there are different stories weaved throughout and we see them all come together seamlessly at the end. Brilliant!

J. Scott Bennett was amazing as always!! He has so many accents and tones that it is always a pleasure to listen to his work. He makes it feel like more than one narrator is narrating! He also knows how to tell a story!!! He puts so much expression and emotion behind his characters, that they feel real. Highly recommend you check out his work!

Yeager's Mission By Scott Bell is a mystery and thriller and general fiction read.

This was a very good read with good characters,. It was a bit slow to start of with and then it was unputdownable. Lots of action too. I liked the ending too. 5*. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book from netgalley.

This is my favorite audible series of all time. Yeager and his Mexican friend Victor can get themselves out of the worst pickles and this story is a real complicated mess. Victor is asked by a relative who is also a priest to help out an orphanage and Catholic mission in Mexico after an earthquake and now a drug cartel are making receiving supplies and medicine impossible. Abel Yeager has a big heart, and of course, he agrees to help Victor.
It was also fun to hear about Yeager's woman and her son and how they are getting on in Texas at their new home.
I love this author's storytelling, and the narrator has the most incredible voice with a real talent to do all voices. Would love to listen to more by this author Scott Bell and this awesome narrator J. Scott Bennett. I hope there will be another book in this series.

I enjoy Scott Bell's writing. He is always able to take me away from the moment and allow me to travel to a different world.

This time around, I read Scott's work while on the plane traveling to New York. It was my first time traveling there and I was extremely excited. So I needed something to occupy my time.

I picked up Scott's book and bamm, before I knew it, I was landing in New York and finishing the last chapter. I flew through the book.

It was easy enough to keep my mind busy and quite a page turner. I literally didn't put it down once.

As always I recommend Scott Bell's books - The first one was good the second was better!

I was given this book in exchange for an honest opinion.

When I finished the first book in this series, Yeager’s Law, I knew that I found my new favorite character in Abel Yeager. Yeager’s Law was action packed with a healthy dose of wit and humor. With these pre-determined expectations, I eagerly awaited the arrival of Yeager’s Mission, and I am glad to say, it did not disappoint.
When Victor appeared, joined by Father Dominic, Abel and Charlotte both knew a mission was looming. Charlotte couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling but also knew she couldn’t stop Abel from helping Victor, especially not when there were orphaned children involved. An urgent shipment of food and medical supplies must reach Rascon, a small dusty village to the west of Guerrero, Mexico, which has been cut off from the neighboring towns after the earthquake. The drug cartels ran the roadblocks and would do all they can to prevent the supplies to get to the orphanage. With an army of men, Verdugo, the leader of a splinter group, was confident he would prevent the shipment from getting there, but then, Verdugo has never met Abel Yeager, ex-marine, and his crazy sidekick, Victor Ruiz. As soon as Abel and Victor agreed to the mission, they found themselves obstructing a Mexican Cartel and the only way out … shoot to kill!
The wordplay was well executed, and I share (only)two sentences with you, “Clouds the color of an undertaker’s frown hid the sunset, making it uniformly darker by the minute.” And the second, “Father Sebastian shifted in his seat, his mouth set in a grim line, and Dietrich focused his eyes in the middle distance as if modeling for an Easter Island statue.”
The book was an easy to read thriller, balanced with action, humor and enough strategy for all the budding Rambo’s out there. Another great read by Scott Bell.

Another great addition to the series. Very entertaining, engaging and enjoyable story. From the moment the book starts you are pulled into the story and all on can do is hold on for the ride. An interesting ride with a few twists you won't see coming. Well written with a great story that's full of action, intrigue and suspense. This is one of those books you know you will listen to repeatedly. This series is absolutely worth your time and credit.

Even though this is the second book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone.

Great cast of characters. All the character's are well developed. There are really two stories going on simultaneously in this book. They weave together eventually in a seamless way that flows naturally and smoothly within the story. Having the intertwining stories just adds to the overall enjoyment of the book.

J Scott Bennett did a fantastic job with the narration as usual. Great voice. Easy to listen to for hours at a time. Clearly spoken with a nice even pace. Really good character voices. He just has a way of bringing the characters to life and pulling you into the story so that you feel like your in the middle of the action. He is the perfect narrator for this series. Very enjoyable.

If you're a fan of intense, multi-plot action, this is the book for you. Since most have given snippets of the story, I'll abstain.
This is the second Abel Yeager story I've read, and I'll be sure to read the author's next work.
It's enjoyable to see a character grow, especially a thriller character, and I see that in this story.
Honestly, even though the multiple points of view and plot lines came together, I sometimes got lost in the shuffle of characters. Well, not lost so much as grew tired of that shuffle. However, it's a testament to the author's skill and imagination that he carried those plot lines through to the end, and that I enjoyed the book regardless of my one tiny quibble.
I'm looking forward to a few things that should carry over into the next book, but out of consideration for readers who haven't read this second novel, I'll keep that to myself.
Give Abel Yeager a chance, including Charlie, his extremely capable love interest. You won't be sorry.

Abel's peaceful life with Charlie and her son is interrupted when his buddy, Victor, shows up with a priest who needs Yeager's help to deliver a truckload of supplies to an orphanage in rural Mexico that has been impacted by an earthquake and become the gathering point for patients from a local hospital. Despite Charlie's misgivings, she and Abel recognize that he has to help. Before the story ends, Charlie is endangered, and both old and new friends pitch in to help as the rescue mission becomes so much more. The action is virtually continuous and described in pulse-pounding detail. I finished this book with the immediate desire to re-read it.

Yeager and his pals get sucked in to helping a desperate Mexican parish priest rescue refugees from an earthquake sheltering at his now inaccessible mission cut off from help by the earthquake and cartels blocking the only roads. Unfortunately, the situation is not what it seems and Yeager and his troops become bigger targets than they had anticipated. On the home front, his family is being threatened by gangster from a previous encounter. Lots of action and a great, if somewhat bittersweet, ending.

I was in the mood for a book full of gunfights, chase scenes, and tough guys. Yeager’s Mission delivered on all fronts! I jumped into this story without listening to the first Abel Yeager book and don’t think I missed anything relevant to this plot. That said, I wouldn’t mind listening to the first on audiobook during my next road trip.

I grew up in the Phoenix area in Arizona, so all the desert landscape scenes really gave me some nostalgic moments. The narration by J. Scott Bennett was a seamless match to the landscape and the characters. I caught myself more than once over the past weeks while going through this adventure muttering about groupo Verdugo in my very best Mexican accent. Thankfully, my wife didn’t catch me muttering, she likes to tease.

I received an audiobook ARC from the author, but let me suggest, Dear Reader, than this thriller is worth your cash! I usually like my action wrapped in the cloak of space travel or dragon slaying, but sometimes I reset my palate with a pure action thriller. My go to is Clive Cussler. Now I can also count on Scott Bell and the Abel Yeager Thriller series.

Abel is a tough retired marine drill sergeant. Along with his friend Victor, a fellow veteran and helicopter pilot, and a couple extra tough guys, Yeager faces off against a Mexican drug Cartel that is starving supplies out of a Mission in the sticks. There are sick people and adorable orphans to protect from the worst kind of thugs.

Scott Bell’s work is well polished. The acknowledgements mention his writing workshop, Scribophile, and I declared, “Of course!” I have done most of my workshopping through Critters, but I used Scribophile for a couple months to double up and run something by my peers while another book was in the Critters workshop. I love being an indie writer and reading the good works of other indie authors. I am also incredibly particular about which indie books I complete and review. Some indies simply don’t take the time to learn and apply good grammar and the use of dialogue and description. Some indie books are pretty bad. The word is Independent Author, not amateur author. We compete with traditionally published professionals with a team supporting their books. It is unfair to readers to deliver an inferior story, especially if the concept sounds great and it’s a simple matter of developing your skills by peer review. My TBR list is nearly empty because I just set down five ebooks that just didn’t make the grade.

There are a number of points of view in the story and by the ending I saw that each was important to the larger story and woven in quite well. There were no loose plot devices to be left wondering about. Except for a certain someone whom I think will emerge in Yeager’s future and bring a grudge!

What did I like? This is the second book in the Yeager series and I am here to tell you that the action in these books will blow you away. The action, mystery, humor and excitement are unbelievable. The characters are so loveable and so real. I started this one afternoon and could not put it down till the last page. It is fast and unrelenting, totally plausible, very convincing, forceful and completely reasonable and that was only the first few chapters, wait till you really get into the book.

What will you like? Characters that will have you coming back for more and more, fully developed storyline that includes lots of details that will not bog you down but will show the research that was done to make this an explosive second adventure. Abel is the average guy that believes in the right of things and Victor is the nut case that helps him accomplish all of that. In this story we had two more guys that were added to the cast list that really will tear your heart out. I fell in love with Abel and Victor in book one and just hope that this series will continue with many books in the future.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review, but I would have purchased it regardless.
Yeager’s Mission is a cowboy western brought into modern times and continues the adventures of Abel Yeager, a very alpha, very Eastwood/Bronson/McQueen type character. Abel will resonate well with most red-blooded readers who enjoy such tales of bravery and chivalry. But he is even stronger than that. He’s the knight errant of old, the bringer of justice to an unjust world. When the law breaks down, who you gonna call? Yeah, not those guys with the proton packs, but Abel—because he’ll get the job done.
The story continues from the first and is a sequel instead of a fresh start like many books of the same genre. I enjoyed that. It allowed the characters more room to bond and I could see this guy becoming the next action hero on a TV show with western undertones. A trucker/common man who takes on the bad guys and deals out frontier justice. He has a loyal, wisecracking sidekick in Victor, and a strong female love interest who is every bit his equal. There’s a crazy Han Solo type with a small plane armed to the teeth, some loyal “Remember the Alamo!” followers, and a badass villain with a machete and a fondness for using it to remove digits and appendages. There are also some twists and surprises along the way.
The story flowed well and maintained tension throughout most of the book. There were a couple of slowdowns, but the action soon picked up again and led to a satisfying ending. I think I enjoyed the first book a tad more, but not by much. I hope the next book in the series exceeds this one, ‘cuz I’ll buy it.

Another great Able Yeager story filled with action, intrigue and suspense. We see many of the great characters we met in the first book and meet some interesting new ones as well. Scott Bennett does a great job of the narration, hitting the different accents just right and infusing tension and emotion in all the right places. This story can have you on the edge of your seat, makes your heart ache and has you laughing, all within the same chapter. Even though it is a stand-a-lone story there are threads that run from book to book, creating a depth and richness to the world. You can not help but love the strong, quirky characters in this story, you are drawn into their lives and just don't want to stop hearing about them. Couple that with the great storyline and the excellent narration and you have a definite winner. I received the audiobook at no cost and under no obligation.

Yeager's Mission is about Abel Yeager who is asked to help refugees in Mexico from multiple earthquakes. But something sinister comes with the past earthquakes, among refugees, there is a good amount of bad guys that have popped up. And they do not want Yeager and his people to help the poor victims of the earthquakes.

Yeager's Mission is great! It is a nice read, it's full of adventure and suspense. But there were times that I couldn't help but laugh a little. The writing style of the author great, it was a mixture of fast-paced and slow. I knew this was going to be a good book from the beginning because Yeager's Mission has a perfect introductory. The book began smoothly and I understood what was going to happen immediately. The characters in Yeager's Mission are all great as well, they all had keen character development!

I would give Yeager's Mission five stars! I also would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read an adventure book with a handful of suspense and the possibility of a sprinkle of humor.

I am so happy that I discovered this author. His writing style makes an easy listen, with a plot and action that kept me wanting to see how it all worked out! The characters are well-developed and each has their own distinctive attributes. Victor brings some light relief with his humorous personality, Smitty some ‘good-old Texan’, Charlie a little romance – I could just keep going! Again, the plot is quite complex and is unravelled steadily throughout the story. This time we experience some sadness – but no one lives forever, right?

Again, J Scott Bennett has done a wonderful narration. A good narrator always makes the characters more real, and Mr Bennett certainly does this for me in this story. The carry-over of the voices is superb and again, I could relate to the characters and places as described. This book is well-suited to the audio format and no editing errors were noted.

In the second installment of Scott Bell’s Abel Yeager series, our hero finds that the road to hell can be paved with good intentions. Responding to a humanitarian crisis that has put children in harm’s way, Yeager and his compadre Victor set out to deliver food, medicine and supplies to an orphanage high up in the Sierra Madre mountains. That all sounds good, except for the big drug cartel standing in their way and the cartel’s henchman-the Executioner dead set on preventing our hero and his top hand from completing their mission. The action is non-stop and the writing fast-paced, spattered with fresh, funny one-liners readers have grown accustomed to from the rising talent that is Scott Bell. If you like Jack Reacher, Walt Longmire and John McClane, you’ll love Abel Yeager.

I really liked this story (as well as the previous book in the series). It is full of action - kind of like the A-Team, but less cheesy. I especially like that the book is full of characters with interesting personalities, and they are good, realistic guys. I'm kind of tired of reading stories about anti-heroes, so this story was a breath of fresh air for me. It kept my attention the whole time, and I hope that this series continues because I can't wait to read more. I listened to the Audible audio version of this book narrated by J. Scott Bennett. His narration was, as always, excellent. He gives unique voices to each of the characters and really keeps the listener engaged. If you like action, I highly recommend this book.

This is the second book in the series and it surpassed the first. The edge of your seat action and suspense was evident all the way through the book. Sorry, no spoilers here :)

The story alternates between Texas and Mexico, but flows very well. The author has placed some very intricate twists that add to the book and will keep your interest. I enjoyed the references to the Alamo and other instances of Texas History. (And no, you don't need to be a Native Texan to understand and appreciate them.)

I am still in love with the two main characters and the added depth to their profiles happens to be a nice addition.

FYI- this series should appeal to both men and women.

I fell in love with Yeager in his first book Yeager's Law.

This novel did not dissappoint. Sometimes the second novels tend to drift off. This one is true to form and kept me in love with the strong, silent Marine, Yeager.

Yeager is determined to help the orphans affected by the earthquake. Due to some drug cartel issues, this may be a problem. This does not stop him!! (As you would guess). He just keeps giving as good as he gets!

This book never lets up. Action-packed, humorous, scary, and full of adrenaline, this novel has it all...and did I mention Yeager....he is one tough cookie and FINE! *sigh*

I received this novel for a honest review.
