Celebrity Chef Zombie Apocalypse

Rate this book
Celebrity Chef Zombie Apocalypse tells the story of the dead celebrity chef Floyd Rampant, who rises from his grave aiming to create a zombie army of chefs who will rule the world, using the human species as the main ingredient in their cordon bleu meals.

CCZA, as it's known for short, has a cast of unforgettable characters, most of whom meet with gruesome ends. The action begins in Croydon, moves to London, and reaches its explosive climax in the author’s home town of Huddersfield.

Part horror story, part political and social satire, it gives the reader a fast-paced entrée of dread, a main course of panic and a dessert of distress.

It is dark, original, and so funny it should carry a government health warning.

This smart, witty and profound modern day classic works on many levels.

An ambitious young TV assistant needs to find a way to bring new life to an old TV show for a deceased celebrity chef. One thing leads to another and now Floyd Rampant, chef extraordinaire, is back in the kitchen with a taste for human flesh.

This book firmly fits in the ‘comedy horror’ category, so be prepared for some graphic gore and violence as well as surreal humour and some political satire. The premise is brilliant, recruiting celebrity chefs to become part of his exclusive zombie uprising – it’s original and the kind of strange silliness that I can really get behind.

I’m happy to accept that a lot of the satire in this book went over my head – like the odd obsession with Huddersfield in the last part of the book and the government’s neglect of the North of England, I couldn’t get my head around the book jumping from zombie apocalypse to political commentary when I was really getting into it.

One thing that I did take issue with was sexual violence being used for cheap laughs – the author doesn’t go into any details for all but one of them, but does make a point of saying how sex starved the zombies are many times, without explaining the whys of it all. I’m a fan of the horror genre and can happily read the darkest of subject matter as long as it’s intended to be horror rather than funny. I just found it a bit distasteful and unnecessary in the grand scheme of things.

The writing style is otherwise very well paced and uses a dry humour, the chapters alternating between the perspectives of different characters. The author uses a lot of different characters to give a wide scope of the zombie apocalypse but Rampant and his zombie cat really are the stars of the show.

{Live 60-second review here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nf_Ga...}

In a world glutted by zombie apocalypse movies, TV shows, and books, Jack McLean offers something completely different. Rather than add another serious story to the mix, Mr. McLean has chosen to deliver a zombie tale with an offbeat twist.

“Celebrity Chef Zombie Apocalypse” takes aim at the once-scary-now-mundane zombie horror story. The author, however, does not stop there, and it takes no time at all to realize Mr. McLean has decided nothing is sacred and every subject is fair game. Politics, internet networks and programs (along with their self-proclaimed stars), military brass, news announcers, police, and so on…the list is as big as the author’s imagination. The typical zombie story is the main target, though, and Mr. McLean pokes fun at the genre every chance he gets.

Truth be told, there are parts of the book that do not fit with the books I normally read. However, everyone is different, and I recognize there are folks who will not worry at all about the things that bothered me. The book is aimed at adults, and has its blue moments when the humor takes on a sexual tone. Some of these scenes are mixed in with the moments of horror when zombies kill and eat their victims (usually cooked with a nice white sauce). The author tells you just enough without lacing the book with graphic details, which should make the book palatable to more people. I wanted to share this with everyone, as some will feel this tale is not their cup of tea.

If the food references that continue to slip into the review bother you, I apologize, but they are unavoidable after reading this book. While this is a series, there is enough of an ending to satisfy most while keeping fans slavering for a second helping. (Ack! Stop me before I pun again!)

If you don’t mind the adult sex/horror references, the constant poking of fun at some of our more respected institutions will, at the very least, give you a chuckle. Four stars.

Celebrity Chef Zombie Apocalypse has got to be one of the funniest books I've ever read!

Full of social and political commentary, it impressed me with keen observations regarding "celebrity chefs", government officials and the police. I thought it was funny as hell that the zombies herein were yellow, which made me picture them as Simpson-like in my head. Not only were they chef zombies, they were sex-crazed celebrity chef zombies-used to getting their own way in all things. (I'm pretty sure I recognized one or two of them from real life as well, which just made things even more funny-especially with the foul-mouthed one.)

The Prime Minister in this book very much reminded me of the man currently in power here in the U. S. I'm sure that wasn't the author's original intention, but I couldn't help myself from thinking that.

I'm not sure that Jardine, the female police investigator was supposed to be funny, but I found her to be so. She finally solves the case, .

Dave, who became the protagonist, , finally got fed up with trying to warn everyone about what was happening and decided to take off with his girlfriend to an isolated area to wait the whole thing out; as you might have guessed, that didn't work out well.

Oh, and did I mention Henderson, the ginger zombie cat? I can't even think about him without laughing.

This book was a hilarious piece of work; decently written with tongue firmly in cheek. I highly recommend it to those of you who like your main dish bloody with a hefty side of humor!

Jack Strange is, yet again, the master of the comedic horror genre.

"Having a dead chef as a front man would be a television first..." - a quote that perfectly summarizes this entire book in a nutshell.

I'm always impressed by Jack Strange - he is a unique writer that is easily able to attract an audience's attention. His mixture of horror and comedy somehow works and draws me back to his work each and every time.

Some of the humor in this book really killed me - a pair of marigolds to get rid of the smell of rotting, human flesh? I always plant marigolds in my garden, and I know they are VERY strong smelling, so this made me chuckle. Even some of the comments said by the characters come off in a hilarious manner - most seem to be said with a hint of sarcasm (or pure stupidity on the character's part), but it's so good! It's my type of dry yet dark humor, and I love it!

I also loved that Henderson is one of our main characters. He's a cat. An undead cat, but still a cat! It's something I don't see very often (animals being main characters or having a personality that isn't some weird talking/animated animal plotline), which adds some points to this read.

The insanity of this plot is exceptional and outstanding! It's unique, strange and oddly satisfying. I would have never come up with like this! Zombies, celebrity chefs, a zombie cat, and R rated mischief? It's a must read for those readers who are looking for something different that they have never come across before! That's one of the best parts about Jack Strange's writing - he's so incredibly creative!

If I had to put this book in specific genres, it fits in many. Horror, comedy, satire, political satire, and fantasy are all shelves I could put this book on. There's sex, gore, and sarcasm galore ridden throughout this novel. Even when the action is at it's highest point, there's a few fantastic one liners that will have you laughing and cringing all at the same time.

My cons are as followed:
1. My own personal con is the font was small in the version I received. Does that affect my scoring? Heck no! Was I slightly annoyed? Yeah. Is this a reason to not read the book? Nope! But I'm gonna include it as a way for Jack Strange to "improve" in his future writing endeavors!

Overall, this book is a true masterpiece! It's clever, ingenious and seriously funny. I highly recommend this book to fans of horror, comedy and satire. You're not going to be able to find another book like this unless it's from Jack Strange's catalogue.

Four out of five stars.

How far would you go to secure your job? One guy went to extreme measures hoping to raise his television station’s ratings by raising a top chef, literally, from the dead. Would Floyd Rampant still have his cooking skills or would he expand his culinary prowess to something more?

Welcome to Jack Strange’s weirdly strange world of food, fantasy, farce and frankly, freaky "stuff" in CELEBRITY CHEF ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE where the cuisine will make you queasy, the humor will have you rolling your eyes and the overall plot will keep you turning pages, if only to verify that, yes, Jack really did write that.

Mr. Strange proves that nothing is sacred as humans go missing while a new legion of chefs roll on and everyone worries more about covering their political butts than solving the problem of too many (zombie) chefs in the kitchen (country).

I love to read, I love to read something off the beaten path, but when Jack Strange made sexual violence a point of “zombies will be zombies” humor, he not only went off the path, but off the cliff for me.

Mostly quirky, stupid fun, this little gem has cult following potential for that special group of reading rebels for whom satire and irreverence rules as this genre chameleon defies being categorized. Sorry to say, there were no graphics and no recipes at the end...

Celebrity Chef Zombie Apocalypse by Jack Strange is a very dark humored zombie book with lots of twists. It certainly isn't the run-of -the-mill zombie book, it is witty, snarky, very British, and full of craziness...the kind that you will want to read and read. A fun read when you are in a foul mood, which I was in so it fit me great! Loved it. Great job. I won't do a book report on it folks, read it yourselves. I am not spoiling it, just know that I can assure you, other books do not have zombies like this!

Jack Strange’s novel, Celebrity Chef Zombie Apocalypse, is as much fun as the title suggests. Fast-paced and full of gore, it’s best not to get too attached to any particular character lest they be molested and then stylishly served up for supper. My personal favourite, Henderson the cat, is an excellent distraction that made me warm to Strange’s unique style of writing. Jumping between several different characters the reader is encouraged to imagine just what might happen if celebrity chefs were to get a taste for human flesh.
Funny and gory in equals parts Strange manages to make this story entertaining even as he breaks the stereotypes of the ‘gormless zombie army’. His tongue-in-cheek humour and satirical approach to characters set this story apart from other horror novels – which isn’t my usual genre choice. For a start, his characters act like ordinary people: some rational, others egotistical and more still who just make plain bad choices.
If you’re looking for an entertaining book to make you smile then you should give this one a try!

I received a copy of this book for review purposes. This is in no way reflected in my opinion of this novel.

Celebrity Chef Zombie Apocalypse is absolutely hilarious! This book is a brilliant mash up of foodie TV, zombie horror, and Monte Python type comedy with a little something thrown in for the car show fans. It had me laughing out loud at the antics of Floyd Rampant, Henderson the Cat, as well as the heroes trying to stop the apocalypse from happening. As a fan of cooking and car shows I thought I recognized the inspiration for some of the characters which made CCZA even better. Jack Strange has breathed new life into a world over-run with zombie horror. I highly recommend this fast paced and gleefully irreverent 4.5 star horror comedy.

Three and a half stars.

Robert Turner is given the thankless and impossible task of making the reruns of an old outdated cooking show interesting again. Luckily he has an uncle that has invented a machine that brings the dead back to life. After trying it out on a cat that becomes mean and hungry enough to chase pit bulls, he convinces his uncle to revive the 15 year old corpse of the cooking show’s host Floyd Rampant with the idea of using the resurrected chef to hype the show. The experiment is highly successful but Floyd has bigger ambitions. He is set on making an army of celebrity zombie chefs thus creating his own “Cookiphate” based on the devotion of one main food ingredient. Human flesh.

That is how Jack Strange starts his debut novel Celebrity Chef Zombie Apocalypse, to be called CCZA to maintain my sanity and preserve my typing fingers. We’ve had zombie everything else so celebrity chefs seem to be a logical extension. The author’s zombies are of the thinking type and Floyd Rampant is an especially smart one. Hence we have a bizarre plot being hatched by him that includes all the cannibalism and massacre one would expect in a novel with such a title. The book starts out like Bizarro black humor but soon morphs into an equally dark socio-political satire. Yet the objective of a farce like this is never lost no matter how many topical turns it takes. It makes you laugh even at the rather comical but grotesque and gruesome stuff.

CCZA manages to make fun of a lot of things: cooking shows, the media, politicians, the military and, of course, zombies, although I doubt real zombies have the ability to understand the humor. Strange has a lot of funny ideas going from his head to the pages. I do wish he spent a little more time on the characters though. With the exception of Floyd Rampant, the rest of the cast weaves in and out without real focus. It create little grounding in the novel which made me think I was reading a different novel by the end due to the switch from horror farce to social satire. At some point, the cleverness outweighed the structure. But that did not keep me from laughing. CCZA is a very witty take on the over-populated Zombie sub-genre of horror novels. There is always room for a zombie novel that makes you laugh.

I do have one minor complaint. It doesn’t include any recipes.

Review:
Celebrity Chef Zombie Apocalypse had me chuckling away to myself within the first couple of pages. Floyd is a larger than life character you can't get out of your mind; once met, never forgotten! Supported by an entertaining bunch of lesser characters, he takes us through this highly amusing zombie tale.

Although comedic in nature, CCZA is not for the faint of heart as there are some gruesome scenes too, as to be expected (and relished!). There is a decent plot and a few surprises too. I'd recommend it to fans of horror and zombie books - you'll love it!

A very clever laugh out loud story

Lots of clever hints at real people. Lots of satire. Clever play on words like air chief nukem, relatable real life issues like roadworks on the M1 that any driver on the M1 can relate too.
I loved the characters plus I love cooking and motors shows and cats. It's not often you have a zombie cat.

This book was absolutely ridiculous. Also laugh-out-loud funny and the perfect antidote to the more serious stuff I had been reading lately. Like any good zombie novel, there are explorations of serious societal issues if you want to look for those. Or you can just take this absurd romp at face value and enjoy it.

Floyd Rampant a celebrity chef is brought back to life after 15 to work on his old TV show, but decides to take over the world first of all be infecting other celebrity chefs, but of course he could not do this without getting found out.

The only problems with this book is that I feel it ended away too soon and also I feel that it could went into further depth with the characters and the story line. Otherwise it's a very enjoyable, faced paced and easy read.

Couldn't put it down!

This is NOT my kind of genre at all. But the dry humour, the quirky ginger cat and daft plot kept me reading til the end and am already looking forward to a sequel! My favourite quip without doubt was the bomb hit town being a PR opportunity for the council clerk...made me proud to work in marketing :-)

What fun! This is not your ordinary voodoo zombie book or medical accident zombie book. These zombies can can pass as human, just like me. They might be a little yellow though, and be a tad hungrier, and be a little hornier. OK, a lot like me. There is even a Zombie cat! How many of you cat owners have thought that your cat secretly wanted to eat you? If you like dark humor, with zombie shenanigans and a little political ineptness on the side, this book is for you!

Beware the chefs!

I'm almost lost for words.....but not quite.
What a great idea to turn the zombie idea on its head and make them not only smart, but also entirely made up of the worlds celebrity chefs!
It's funny in a disturbed kind of way, with a real poke at our government and their ignorance of 'oop north'. The heroes are few and very English in their actions whilst the chefs are scary.
A fun change for zombie lovers everywhere.

I was intrigued by a Facebook Ad for this book that featured two opposing reviews. One said it was hilarious, and the other called it an unreadable bore. Neither are accurate, so here you are, the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

Part 1 draws you in to Robert Turner’s life. He has his troubles, but he’s normal. That is until, desperate to keep his job with a failing TV channel, he convinces himself one of his uncle’s crazy inventions has worked. Hasn’t he just seen a cat brought back from the dead? Borrowing money from a loan shark – grave-robbing with the aid of junkies – this almost ended my marriage! Reading a Kindle quietly in bed when sleepless is fine, but not when it wakes one’s husband, who protests and wakes the dog, who barks so loudly she wakes three Highland terriers over the back fence and four Huskies two streets away, and the telephone rings with neighbours complaining… Yes, it is hilarious.

Parts 2, 3, and onwards include the police investigation, and sous chef David and his girlfriend crawling through the aircon ducts in the O2 arena, followed by the reluctant involvement of the government, who try to pass off a zombie apocalypse to the paparazzi as “a terrorist threat up north”. I live “up north”, and it might very likely work since nobody south of Watford Gap believes we exist, or only as an antiquated tourist attraction.

Far from boring, Celebrity Chef Zombie Apocalypse is a well-plotted story that has the reader believing the horror could actually happen – is happening! Kudos to Jack Strange for achieving this level of suspension of disbelief.

CCZA starts out with Robert, a man who is desperate to come up with a plan to keep his job, and he only has a week to do it. How can he make an old cooking show from the 80's fresh enough that it will attract viewers? Easy enough, raise the chef, Floyd Rampant from the dead to introduce his shows, say a bit about them. His uncle has made it sound easy enough, so it should be.

But alas, nothing in life is easy and very little goes according to plan.
Floyd isn't as cooperative as Robert had hoped, and as the good chef starts to make plans, things start to get out of hand. Thankfully, there is a man named Dave that is onto him, only no one really quite believes him, not even his girlfriend who thinks his time would be better served in therapy. Zombie apocalypse? No way..erm...

I had read another book of McLean's, and he has a unique writing style. He's witty, funny, and his stories are well thought out. He can take you to crazy town and have you laughing the entire time. Things like "...he dropped onto all fours and fled into the lounge where he cowered under the sofa. Then he realised, he shouldn't be able to fit under the sofa." I burst out laughing so hard at that.

It's not just a zombie book, or a comedy, because there are elements of a mystery that has to be solved, so it ticks a lot of boxes. He doesn't hold back, so you're going to get exactly what you expect to happen, and a whole lot you're not, which is what makes it so brilliant. A superb read that I just had to buy. I'm looking forward to book 2.

Have you ever seen the Re-Animator (1985) film? I believe this is aiming for that mix of horror and humor. I didn’t particularly like the Re-Animator, but at least the film had some pathos to it.

It does not take long to find the main characters unpleasantly shallow and rather unintelligent.

In it’s jovial style the book implies that it’s written to be a farce. Unfortunately, nothing funny happens. Instead it’s portrays unpleasant people doing mediocre things before dying gruesomely.

Because of the attempt at humor, the horror lacks the punch needed to have any visceral effect. Even the unnecessary allusions to sex and rape isn’t enough to nudge it to the nasty explicit/horror category.

So, we have a book that tries to be funny and scary and fails in both.

And after all that, the worst offence is the character named ‘Air Chief Nukem’. I can not forgive such on-the-nose naming in a zombie novel.

Celebrity Chef Zombie Apocalypse is the first in a zombie series and starts us off on the tale of how zombies (both humans and animals alike) plan on taking over the world.

Robert Turner is in real danger of being fired if he can’t figure out how to get FRTV headed in the right direction again. He needs something big, and quick. Someone who has been on TV and been a celebrity. His inventive uncle claims to have created a machine that brings the dead back to life, and after witnessing the neighbour’s cat Henderson being brought back (don’t ask how he died), he is keen to try it out on Floyd Rampant, a celebrity chef who died 15 years previously. Surprise surprise – it worked! Only Floyd and Henderson are now sex-crazed, starving zombies. Floyd decides to “recruit” other celebrity chefs to the cause and soon there is a wave of zombies ready to take over the world. Dave, a former employee of one of the turned, is trying to warn the world, but no one will listen. Eventually, as the murders become more obvious and public, it falls to the Prime Minister to invoke drastic measure to save the day. But seeing as this is the first book in the series...

I actually read the second book Zomcats first, and now I see how Henderson was changed and the world infected by zombies. Makes more sense when you know more of the back story. This is a good giggle, full of dark humour, body parts and political satire. It’s a snarky twist on a good old-fashioned zombie gore fest. A quick, crazy read with only a few editing mistakes that won’t really put you off the flow of reading.

Not sure what I was expecting going in to reading this book. I've read a fair a put of zombie books but this one was a little different. At first I was sceptical because of how the Zombies came to be. I've seen enough and read enough to be like that's a bad idea you've not thought it through. I'm going to be picky and be like 4 stars because of Henderson you almost lost me there and Infact if it had been a book I would have thrown it. Luckily it was a ebook. I am glad I persevered because it was a good book maybe a little implausible but hey maybe some people are just that dumb. Woops this is long. It's worth a read big warning to cat lovers though there is a zombie cat in it. He becomes a zombie because someone accidently killed him. Imay have to edit this but I loved parts of it and I did enjoy it in the end.

I feel like zombies are overdone. Everything is zombies these days! I used to really like zombie stories, but now I feel like they are almost as played out as vampires....

But I really liked this! Zombie Chef's are fun! I like the idea of culinary genius meeting mindless brain eating. What a fantastic premise!

This was funny as heck and well written. The pacing was good and I actually liked most, if not all, of the characters (not that most of them stuck around long enough to dislike). I think Henderson was my favorite...totally caught off guard by his narrative (and I'm pretty certain I'm going to really like the sequel).

But...VENDING MACHINE COFFEE. Dear lord. Certain characters drink an awful lot of vending machine coffee. Yuck yuck yuck. That's my only really complaint about this book.

I apparently can read about cannibalism in all its forms, but I draw a line at crappy coffee. :D

This book is meant to be satire (I think) and it’s quite funny. I can honestly say I’ve never read anything like this which means, the author achieved something original within a ginormously saturated genre.

If you can set aside logic, and not worry about its plausibility, then I think you will really enjoy this book. I myself like the psuedo-science that goes along with a typical zombie book, so I’m not sure if it’s for me. I guess I take my zombie stuff too seriously, because I can see many readers liking this book.

If you want to read something outside the box, then give this one ago. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Thanking the author, Jack D.McLean for sending a digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review

This is the story of a celebrity chef, who rises from the dead to and who ends up creating a Zombie Army, to rule the world.
The story is being unfolded in front of the reader, just like watching a movie.
The settings, pre and post apocalypse scenarios are vividly described.
All the characters are well constructed and linked to the story very carefully and appropriately.
In the end, the reader is left to think will the destruction ever stop?
The story has brought Culinary Masters and horrific Zombies together, to create a one-in-a-million story.
I have never read a book like this before and I can say that the story is original and unique.
This dark, terrifying and dangerous short read, will surely make you entertained.
