Magic and Mayhem Review

What can I say? There's no words good enough to describe what a great collection this is. These are full length novels. I think the authors are trying to spoil us with such wonderful tells put together like this. This price is unbelievable! I feel like it's Christmas and just got a surprise gift I would've never expected from my husband. I think this is the best collection I have ever read. And I'm not just saying that. If you are unsure about taking a chance on this, just look up each individual book price. Each book alone is well over $0.99. Well, most are. I am going to read the rest in each series. Well, i hope to. My TBR list is full. Some of the authors are new to me. One of my favorites was Thea Atkinson's Water Witch. It was different than most books. It was emotional on all different levels. I felt so bad for the heroine. Her dad was so cruel to her but it was all she ever knew. She had no one to turn to. And was filled with lies her whole life by him. All this changes though. I loved it.

Erin Hayes - Death is But a Dream
Loved it

This was a totally different take on Greek mythology and I loved it.

Erin has a way of painting a story that drawls you in from he very beginning and this one did not disappoint.

The storyline was original and different, and also kept you guessing. I cannot wait to read the next book.

Emily Goodwin - Unbound
Where do I start. I seem to be stalking everything that is published by Emily as she is so talented. She paints a picture of Anora (Annie) a girl who is sensitive to ghost but she try's to be as normal as possible as she is dreamed the weird girl in school. She has a twin brother is who popular and normal and she wants that kind of life. When he aunt sends her some weird things for her birthday and things start to change she questions everything that she thought she knew.
Then Annie bumps into Ethan who is more than what he seems. This book was so good I rushed through it eager to find out what happened. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves paranormal, witches, and a bit of mystery.

Yeah...if you're looking for mostly junk paranormal romance and mysterious handsome strangers in various settings, my guess is you'll like this. Bonus points if you like young adult and post apocalyptic settings.

I like none of these things. Choked through two of the authors and gave up after looking at the descriptions of the other novels. Not worth $1.

1.Burned by Magic (Baine Chronicles #1) by Jasmine Walt ****4 Stars
Naya's mentor is murdered and she vows to get to the bottom of the string of suspicious shifter deaths. Of course as she investigates she accidentally uses her illegal magic and reveals herself as a shifter/mage hybrid. She is brought to the Chief Mage so he can decide what to do with her. Instead of ordering her execution he decides to try and help her with her magic while she tries to open his eyes to the corruption in their country. I really enjoyed this one. I thought it was fast paced and had an interesting world with a lot of intrigue. Yes Naya could be a total bitch but I also felt she had a legitimate reason to be from all of the prejudice she received. And most of the time she lost her temper about things that really matter like unsolved murder and a pending race war. Though not an obvious romance I liked the dynamic between Naya and Iannis, I think it was a very slow burn but definitely had feeling behind it. Overall a good start to this collection and I'm looking forward to reading on.

2.Unbound (The Guardian Legacies #1) by Emily Goodwin **2 Stars
When Anora's great aunt dies she leaves everything to Anora, including magical powers she never knew about. With the help of her boyfriend Ethan, a demon hunter, she defends herself against strange attacks and tries to figure who is behind them. So this was ok, I wanted it to be better but it moved sooooo slowly and nothing really seemed to happen, you didn't get much information on the Order or the Coven and by the end I was just ready for it to be over.

3.Legally Undead (Vampirarchy #1) by Margo Bond Collins ***3 Stars
Elle is in school headed for a doctorate, engaged to a lawyer and everything is looking up for her. Until she comes home to her fiancé being attacked by a vampire. She is having trouble going back to school and being normal now that she knows about vampires....not to mention the fact that Greg, her ex fiancé, is now a vampire and not ready to end their relationship. Elle makes friends with Nick and his group of vampire hunters while trying to figure out how Greg got mixed up in things and how much his law firm had to do with it. This was fast paced with an interesting story that kept you guessing. I liked Elle for the most part even though I thought it was pretty messed up that she got Malcolm involved without full disclosure. I think what held me back from 4 stars was just that there wasn't much good in it. By that I mean, besides a few stolen moments with Malcolm and some budding friendship moments with the hunter team everything that happened was really heavy and I need a little more lightness to really enjoy a story.

4.Wardbreaker (Lillim Callina Chronicles #.05) by J.A. Cipriano **2 Stars
Chapters 1-15 were looking like 4 Stars...but chapters 16-21 were a solid 1 Star. Lillim is some sort of special monster hunter but she runs away because she doesn't like it anymore. She finds Luc, a human hunter who has weird powers, who convinces her to take on a group of really powerful vampires. They keep running into more and more creatures and things just get worse. It went from being cheeky to being really lame in just a few chapters, disappointing ending.

5.The Sorcery Code (#1) by Dima Zales & Anna Zaires Not Interested

6.Chased by Fire (Cloud Warrior Saga #1) by D.K. Holmberg ****4 Stars
Tan is an Earth Sensor, which means he can gain information from sensing what is around him. There are also Shapers who can manipulate what is around them to fit their needs. Roine, a shaper from the king, comes in search of an ancient artifact. Tan accompanies him at his mother's request but soon finds that not only are there more people after the artifact but that he really doesn't know much about the world outside his village. This was a great fantasy story. People who can sense and shape the elements in a race against time and those who would bend the elements unnaturally. It was tense and suspenseful and the world building was clear and vivid. My biggest and really only complaint was that there was too much bad stuff and not enough good. From the start they were running for their lives and they only had like 10 seconds to relax at all. A little too stressful for me...I know, I'm a weirdo.

7.Water Witch (Elemental Magic #1) by Thea Atkinson Not Interested
8.Adamant (Alliance #1) by Emma L. Adams Not Interested
9.The Sunken by S.C. Green Not Interested
10. The Atomic Sea by Jack Conner Not Interested
11.Rebel's Honor (Crown of Blood #1) by Gwynn White Not Interested

12.Echo in Time (Echo Trilogy #1) by Lindsey Fairleigh *1 Star (PR)
Gave up on this one at about 40% Lex, along with all of the other characters, are just bland and uninteresting. I don't particularly love the writing style, nothing that happened seemed to be important. And all of the Egyptian mythology was just dumped making it feel like reading a really confusing textbook. Just not for me.

13.Come the Dark (Forever Girl #2) by Rebecca Hamilton Not Interested
14.They're so Vein (Grateful Undead #1) by Susan Stec Not Interested
15.Chameleon (Incubus #3) by K. De Long Not Interested
16.Brooding City (#1) by Tom Shutt Not Interested

17.Death is but a Dream (Elysium Legacies #1) by Erin Hayes *1 Star
Callie throws herself in front of a bus to save a little girl and in her mostly dead state agrees to investigate who is trying to kill Hades' son Plutus. I really didn't like Callie. She had a mega attitude, which does not equal toughness. She said she didn't regret saving the girl but apparently dealing with the consequences is too much for her. And she is too good and too moral and knows too much to be subjected to things that she admittedly doesn't understand. I couldn't even get the story in my head because Callie's tude was in the way.

18.Power Shift by Calinda B. Not Interested
I think this was supposed to be funny but it was not exactly my brand of humor.

19.Silenced by N.R. Larry Not Interested
I gave up on this one around the time I read the following..."Nothing homo. He's just letting me know he owns my ass". Just kind of rubbed me the wrong way and I didn't care to continue.

20.Bound by Destiny by Laxmi Hariharan Not Interested
Yudi is a big jerk and Tiina just lets him treat her poorly. Not a fan immediately.

21.Netherworld (Chronicles of Koa #1) by K.N. Lee *1 Star
Koa is half vampire and works for the a Netherworld police agency. Netherworld creatures are trying to bring Koa back there and her boss Halston is trying to protect her from stuff. I didn't understand a lot of this world mostly because there was a lot that happened but none of it seemed to tie together by the end. The sole focus was that Halston and Koa were in love but wouldn't admit it for different reasons. Halston kept large bits of information to himself with the excuse that he was protecting Koa...that is a serious pet peeve of mine. Keeping vital information from someone just puts them in more danger it does not equal safety just stupidity. Then there was a random gross oracle spouting off about a phrophecy, a serial killer demon, Koa's sired vampire and subsequent human pet. Just all over the place, I was not a fan at all.

Book 1 Burned by Magic

In a world where unlicensed magic wielders were either executed or memory wiped, a young woman has grown up with the dangerous secret of being half shifter and half mage. She had no control over her magic, which manifested itself, when she was in mortal danger.
Thus, she is outed, and tried, but she has a reprieve, which I feel, I have said too much already, and you need to read this adventure they way the author intended.
It is an interesting tale.

Book 2 Unbound

A young woman inherited more than a house and money from her Great Aunt.
Learning of her witch heritage, also opens up the world of Demons, that now seek her power.
With a hunk, Ethan, she fights against evil.

Book 3 Legally Undead

What do you do when you walk into a room, to find a man biting on your fiance's neck, with blood streaming from the wound.
Well our heroine attacked, and so starts a brilliant tale of Vampires in New York, and a group of brave souls on a mission to kill them.

Book 4 Wardbreaker

This is a very different story to the normal paranormal tale.
Lillian was from another planet, one which had monitored and controlled supernatural beings here on earth. She had run from her responsibilities, and run into Jean Luc who took her under his protection.
However, between a vampire infestation causing problems within the city and the secret of who Jean Luc actually was, causes all sorts of drama.
Yeah, it different from the normal.

Oh my god how stupid can you be?

I can't stand the heroine. She makes the stupidest choices and then has to agonize over her dumb choice. I hated after the first two chapters and was hoping she would be killed. Ugh.

Wonderful books

I wasn't sure all of these books in this collection were going to be as interesting as they were. These books were wonderful. Every story was fun to read and each were unique. Worth reading.

The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.

If you like urban fantasy, you should like this. Some of the stories are really good and some are so-so. There are some grammar errors but for the most part the stories read well.

It took me quite a while to get through the books I did in this set because there are just so many and I’m so glad I did. Many of them are prequels or the first in a series, and I must say I have found some new authors to try. The books are full-length, so don’t think they are just teasers. They are the actual books. This box set is a wonderful tool to be introduced to new authors. I, of course, didn’t like a couple of the books, but not because the books were bad, but just because the storylines didn’t really appeal to me. That’s the beauty of a set: you can try lots of books almost for free. If you need something great, need new authors to try, or just want a great deal, buy this set. You’ll be so glad you did! Highly recommend!

Thanks to one of the authors for the free e-book in exchange for an honest review. This same review will be posted on both Goodreads and Amazon.

Power Shift: Hunting the Bounty Hunter beneath Haunted Alaska Skies. I received this book in exchange for my honest review. I loved it very much. My first urban fantasy book to read and I was very pleased with it. I will be planning on reading more of them. Not the first book that I have read of Calinda B's work and will definitely not be the last. Very good author and love her work. Chia is chasing the famous Bounty Hunter Hung. The town is turning against her if she doesn't come through this time with his capture. But their are other plans in the fix as well to get rid of the charming Chia and frame Hung for the crimes going on too. Chia and Hung have the strong attraction to one another will they see were it goes? Will she turn Hung in or listen to what he says and help find out who is behind all of this.?

According to my Kindle purchase history I bought this on 8/2/16 and it's marked as read. Interestingly, it is no longer available through Amazon.

I have no idea when I read this or why I didn't label it on Goodreads as read at the time. I recently started reading Rebel's Honor and knew I had already read it at an earlier date. I've been going nuts trying to figure out when (I don't know why/must have control freak issues) I had also made note of the stories Wardbreaker by J.A. Cipriano and Water Witch by Thea Atkinson. This collection has all three. I'm not going to leave a rating since I don't remember all of the stories but suffice to say I did like the three mentioned.

Wowsie! This is the book wth it all...

Focusing on one author for now: Once more, KN Lee surprises me with her incredible world building and seamless writing. I couldn't put this down. I want to be in one of her worlds full time lol
Anyhow back to the book, this one doesn't have the steamy sexy bits but is as romantic as a book can be. Sex shouldn't replace incredible story writing anyway. Now I'm not saying the sequel will be tame as KN Lee never fails to surprise my brain & senses...

Not bad

Considering that I enjoyed 11 out of the 21 stories in this collection... it wasn't too bad. Two of the books got me hooked enough to purchase the other books in their series'. But the ones I didn't like, I really didn't like and figured it out pretty fast with each of them...

Amazing

This book has so many stories. They are from so many different authors. The plots are all different. You get the feelings from each of the individual authors, that are put into each story. I have ordered several of the continuing stories and plan on getting the others of all authors included.

First book is the best

I really enjoyed this book and went ahead and bought all 4 books, I have to say that this author likes to repeat herself so much, you don't even need to buy all the books, maybe first and last. Had I only known. It was frustrating a lot because, it's a good story just too many repeats that are unnecessary.

On the whole this wasn't the collection I had expected.
I'm sure these authors appeal to many, many readers but I am not going to among their fan-base.
I cannot fault the writing style but the content wasn't 'my cup of tea'.

As collections go

There are quite a few very good stories in this collection. There are some that are amazing. I assume that books are bundled to expose the works of authors to a wider audience. This one did capture attention to some I had not encountered.
