Hot damn! Ms. Ballenger rocked the hell out of this book, making Immortal Hunter one of UTC’s Top Pick for this year. Ms. Ballenger continues to impress me with the none-stop excitement in this book. It had a perfect blend of mystery, action, humor, romance and a little bit of heartbreak.

David and Allsun’s past goes back further than I thought, which of course is explained more in this book. In fact, they were high school sweethearts but somewhere down the line, their paths separate. Or more down to the point, their priorities changed. Their past broke my heart and I’m glad they get a second chance to rectify their relationship.

The mystery of the murders, oddly, is what brought these two together. Because of their talent to sense demon activity, they are both drawn to the demon activity around them. I have to say, some scenes were not gory per se, but how the murders were done made me cringe a little. Okay, no, it freaked me out a little. The murders were just a bit brutal but don’t get me wrong, it goes well with the story. Ms. Ballenger does touch a little on the loss and grieving. Allsun did not have tortured past but losing someone she loves was a big tear jerker for me. She truly touched my heart with this subject. On a good note, Ms. Ballenger had given Allsun the happy-ending she deserves.

I was curious about Damon, the hero from the novella Shadow Hunter. I actually had to open up his book to remember what happened. As soon as I remembered and seeing him emotionally suffer made me want his book even more. From what I hear his book will be the very last of the series. I’m sure it will be a worthwhile read. Actually, I’m excited to read more of this group who is dedicated to making a difference in this world.

With this book, Ms. Ballenger cements my decision to make her an auto buy and review for any book she writes. She is a solid writer and I expected more great books from her.

tear Well-Written AlphaMale

The men of the Execution Underground (EU) all have their own simple area. Jace from book 1, Twilight Hunter is the best werewolve hunter. Damon from the novella, Shadow Hunter is the best vampire hunter and the leader of the Rochester Division. Shane is the hottie hiding under his book nerd title and he specializes in all things occult. Ash Devereaux, talks to ghosts. Trent, is a shifter hunter. (You can find out more about each guy at Meet the Rochester Division)

That brings us to the hero of Immortal Hunter, David Aronowitz and he is the best in demon exorcist around. And he's working hard to over come the lost of the love of his life only to find her again in time to almost loose her again by events that took place in Twilight Hunter. That's where IH starts, about a month after TH.

David and Allsun (Allie) grew up together and became BFFs in high school then after Allie went to Ireland one summer to visit family she came back all grown up and David started seeing her as more than just his best friend. The two realized they were in love and got engaged. But after one hellish break up and five years later the two can't each other out of their heads or hearts.

David and Allie were not only engaged to get married but they also hunted demons together. See David is not the only one in the couple that has special abilities (his exorcist gift), Allie is half fae, pixie to be exact. And all those years ago when she gave David her heart she also gave him another piece of herself that she needs back.

Allie and David's romance is full of heart-break. Some of it could have been avoided if Allie had talked more with David but her hurt over David's decision to join the EU made her act out and things only go worse that night long along. Kait Ballenger really puts you through the emotional ringer with Immortal Hunter.

I think Lori at Romancing the Dark Side summed up this series greatly when we were talking about it... "The guys remind me a little of BDB without the fangs...LOL"

If you're looking for a great PNR series that's only 2 books (and a novella) in you can quickly catch up with Kait Ballenger's Execution Underground series. And what's not to love about a demon hunting alpha male that reads romance novels?

Immortal Hunter, the second book in Kait Ballenger's unique Execution Underground series, was an incredibly slow read for me which was beyond disappointing as the first book, Twilight Hunter, was made of awesome and I've been itching for David's story since finishing it.

Don't get me wrong, the world building is phenomenal (as each member of the Execution Underground specializes in a different field and this is our first look at an exorcist in action) but I had a hard time relating to the heroine, Allsún. She rubbed me the wrong way on numerous occasions and I honestly couldn't see why David wanted her. At all. Even though I felt bad for the tragedy in her past, I felt she handled it in the worst way possible which made sympathizing with her difficult. Also, when she FINALLY decided to come clean with David, she couldn't have picked a worse time or venue to spill the beans. Again I found myself disliking her and wishing she weren't the heroine.

If it wasn't for my intense desire for the heroine's death, I probably would have loved Immortal Hunter. Sadly, it's all that stuck with me as I struggled through the book.

Regardless of my numerous issues with Allsún, I found David super smexy and getting a little more insight into his specialized field was bad ass. I also thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Shane better. Immortal Hunter set up his book nicely and I'm very much looking forward to it.

IMMORTAL HUNTER is a solid follow up to the series. In fact I liked this more than Twilight Hunter. Aside from the fantastic plot, conflict and resolution, David and Allsún are great main characters. Their relationship has depth and very grown up, devoid of juvenile antics we sometimes see in other PNR novels. I'm happy that there's no insta-love and that the romantic relationships mirrors the different stages of love real-life couples go through. The trend KBallenger has set up for her series is great and at the rate Execution Underground is going, I have no doubt it'll only get better and better.

David Aronowitz is a first class demon hunter with Execution Underground, a secretive organization that polices the paranormal beings hidden among humans. In the previous book, Twilight Hunter, David discovered that his once love, Allsún O'Hare, has been hiding out among a wolf shifter pack. Allsún, a half-Fae (pixie) and the only Fae outside of the Isle of Apples, was kidnapped and tortured before David and the rest of the EU team could save her. After spending the past few weeks in a coma, Allsún wakes to a burning need to stop a rampaging demon. Unfortunately, now that she’s been discovered, every demon on earth will want to track her down and stop her. So the once lovers must team up to stop the demons and hope that neither one gets killed in the process.

Immortal Hunter is an emotionally satisfying, action-filled tale that I throughly enjoyed. It is evident when reading the book that the author put her heart into this tale, and it is a better story because of it. Overall, it is a much stronger, more cohesive tale when compared to the first two books in the series. Immortal Hunter can be read as stand alone, even though Allsún and David's story started briefly in the prior book.

Gaining perspective from both David and Allsún’s point-of-views, the reader learns about the demons roaming the earth, as well as the history of the Fae. In addition, there are a number of flashbacks that allow the reader to connect with both characters on a deeper level. The flashbacks are not disruptive to the flow of the story, but rather enhance the overall reading experience. Learning how David and Allsún once loved each other - and never stopped - allows for a more immediate and natural connection between the pair.

Throughout the story and up until we learn the full truth, Allsún leaves the readers hints that there is way more to the story of why she left David five years prior. As the somewhat predictable truth is uncovered, I became engrossed with the book and attached to the couple. I wanted them to get past their past so that their love could move them forward. It is evident that Ms. Ballenger gave a lot of herself to these characters, allowing them to blossom and grow. I was deeply touched by their journey.

David is faced with a demon mystery of sorts - horrific human killings, to include infant children. The clues left behind at each murder scene don’t add up, and it is thrilling to watch David attempt to piece each clue together. I appreciate that upon describing a horrific murder scene, the author used David's emotions and reactions to paint the picture of how brutal it was, rather than share with the reader the gruesome details. In addition, the reader receives periodic updates from the antagonist’s POV, making the entire mystery very intense and exciting.

One of the things that also stands out for me in Immortal Hunter is that the EU team is a more cohesive group. In the previous book, I didn’t like how they were completely leery of one another and always so quick to believe the worst. This time around, the group act more like brothers-in-arms and close friends, making for a much more satisfying read. I liked seeing Jace and Frankie, the h/h from the prior book. It was enjoyable to know that they don’t just “ride off into the sunset,” but their relationship continues to grow. In addition, the reader is treated to a brief look at a more sympathetic Damon, as well as meet Vera, (I’m guessing) the future HEA for teammate Shane. Their moments were fun to read.

There were a couple “what the??” moments for me - like one time when David leaves a demonic possession scene to confront Allsún. It felt out of character that he would be so sloppy and careless. But those moments are rare and don’t take away from the overall storyline.

In the end, Immortal Hunter is a wonderful paranormal love story. The personal connections between David and Allsún and among the EU teammates is palatable. I enjoyed how they joked and cared about each other. This is the camaraderie I had hoped for in the precious book. Allsún and David have a strong connection because of their history, one that was brought to life via flashbacks, inner turmoil/monologue, and conversation.

The overall story of a demon trying to return to the human realm was also interesting and exciting. Even though the reader is privy to the demonic plans via POV from the antagonist, I liked watching David and crew try and piece together the clues. I am looking forward to reading the next story in the Execution Underground series, especially with substantial character progress for each of the members of the EU team.

This is book two in the series (even though amazon says it is book 3 for reason) I have not read the two previous books, but the book can easily stand alone. The whole premise of the book is exciting David Aronowitz, as a exorcist working for the execution underground.
There are some really tender moments between him and Allusun and you felt like this was the second chance they needed to be together. Well, they do say three is a crowd because Allusun has a little demon issue of her own.
I enjoyed that book and I will be looking to read the first book in the series. If you love paranormal romance, then this is one not to miss.

Immortal Hunter is the second book in author Kait Ballenger’s Execution Underground Series and admittedly the first book I have read. First let me say that I wasn’t lost at all while reading even though I hadn’t read the first book. Second I have to say….I loved this book and will be reading all of the installments from here on out!
Exorcist and Execution Underground member David Aronowitz is used to seeing some pretty gruesome things. In his line of work he’s come across some of the most heinous demons imaginable and all sorts of things that go bump in the night. But the particular demon he just killed has him scared the most he’s ever been. Not because the demon was particularly terrifying but because the demon told David something that left his blood running cold….that other demons knew about Allsún and that she was the last fae in this world. She was valuable and vulnerable to the demon world and had remained hidden until now. Allsún, the love of David’s life. Once his fiancé, he would still do anything to protect her and right now she was in dire need of that. Right now she was in a hospital bed recovering from the last time he couldn’t protect her and there’s no way he’d let that happen again.
Suddenly awakened out of a drug induced coma and being pulled by an indescribable force, Allsún O’Hare knew something bad was happening in the demon world. She didn’t know what or where, exactly, just that she had to follow this feeling to where it led her and fight whatever evil lay ahead. She never expected to see David at the house her feelings led her to. It shouldn’t surprise her, really. He was an exorcist after all. But the horror that she encounters at the scene was truly a shock. This wasn’t like anything either of them had seen before and instantly they both know things are bad.
With Allsún in danger and David on the hunt for the most diabolical demon he’s ever encountered, they will be forced to work together to end this reign of terror. Of course spending time together after years of being apart is bound to bring up all of the feelings they once shared. Feelings that never truly went away.
Oh man, I loved this book! I think one of the things I loved most about this book, and the series, is that it takes a different approach. Yes, it’s paranormal and deals with demons and the underworld, but the rituals and weapons they use are different than others I have read. There is a lot of Judaism in the methods David uses to exorcise and I found that really refreshing. One of the other things I loved about this book was the love story between David and Allsún really took a front row seat instead of being on the back burner. I really enjoyed that. The have a whole lot to work through and I wouldn’t have been happy if their issues were resolved in a chapter or two. Luckily, Kait gave us plenty to read and time to understand the feelings fro both David and Allsún’s POVs. It made the connection to the characters so much stronger, which for the ending of this book was imperative. I was a nervous wreck for the last few chapters because I was so worried for David, Allsún and the whole Execution Underground crew! They have one hell of a fight on their hands (no pun intended) and I had no idea what the outcome was going to be. I loved that feeling!
I also loved getting a peek into Damon’s very guarded emotions in the end and I am really hoping we get to see his story soon! I can imagine it’s going to be gut wrenching.
Thank you, Kait, for your take on good vs. evil and for giving me a series to look forward to reading more from!

The Execution Underground Series by Kait Ballenger started with Shadow Hunter in the anthology After Dark with Gena Showalter. The series continued with Twilight Hunter, and now Immortal Hunter is being released TODAY. (April 1, 2014)

Immortal Hunter focuses on David Aronowitz and Allsún O´Hare. Once upon a couple and hunting demons together. That was… Until David chose to join The Execution Underground without talking to Allsún about it first.

This wasn’t the only reason that Allsún and David went separate ways, but that my friends, is another story.

After the events in Twilight Hunter where Allsún was tortured, she’s been in the hospital, her body and mind trying to mend itself. Seeing David again was a shock to her, reminding her of all the good and bad things they had together and what truly tore them apart. But not even David knows it, and the question is will they be able to forgive each other, and more importantly, themselves before it’s too late?

I was VERY fortunate to be able to help Kait out, reading this as a beta. I received it Friday night, close to midnight, stayed up to 2 AM, went to work the next day, came home, and picked right up. I was done same day. I loved it from beginning to end. Every page was packed with secrets, misunderstandings, little clues, heartache, love, desperation, evilness, and hope. It was filled with Kait and her beautiful writing. She can take simple things and transform them into something entirely else, creating a world you want to sink into and never truly leave.

One thing is the relationship between David and Allsún, how they’re drawn to each other, trying to protect themselves and each other, hoping against hope, knowing it will most likely end in disaster.

There are so many good thing I want to tell you about in this book; their relationship, Damon’s reactions, David’s iron-will, Allisún’s secrets, the demon and the evil plan that it has created, every heart break, the part right after David finally understands what happened, the hurt I felt when I got to know Allsún’s secret…. And DON’T get me started on the ending!! I swear, my heart was in my throat!

Everything, every little piece clicks into place and delivers the Immortal Hunter, the next installment in Kait Ballenger’s Execution Underground Series. It is right up in the same alley as Shadow Hunter and Twilight Hunter, even surpasses them in my opinion.

So what I truly am trying to say; Immortal Hunter delivered everything that kait is known for, and more. She wrecked havoc on my heart, mind and soul, and I will definitely be coming back for more. This is one of those moments where you realize as a reader and blogger how amazing and awesome it is to follow a rising star from the very beginning. *raises teacup* Thank you Kait, for another wonderful book, may there come many more in the future. Never stop what you’re doing. You rock at it!!!

Immortal Hunter (Execution Underground, #2) by Kait Ballenger

Overall Rating: 3.75 Rockin' ★★★☆

"Something big was about to go down with the demons in Rochester, and he was determined to find out what it was."

"She was forced to admit to herself that David was a like a fine bottle of top shelf whiskey that only got better and better with age."

"There are no guarantees in life."

David Aronowitz is part of the EU- Execution Underground: a secret organization for the sole purpose of controlling any and all paranormal activities. Demons, shifters, Ghosts, Witches, etc. Allsun O'Hare is a half Fae, half human whose current job is a veterinary technician and can exercise demons to boot. David and Alllsun have a stark history together. David had been in love with Allsun since grade school and Allsun loved David every bit as much. Their passion and love was undeniably hot and yet almost surreal. Once engaged, but parted on unhappy terms they are thrust back together to battle the evils of hideous demons who are terrorizing the Rochester area.

This story gripped me from the start and sparked my interest. Although, some of it was a little hard to take with the demonic tones that were ever present throughout the book; the murders and blood lust driven by the demons who acted upon them. However, the passion and pull between the couple made me feel sad and almost bereft for the loss and anguish they were put through. I enjoyed reading this book, aside from the blood and gore. The characters were well created and I laughed and cried with them. I look forward to reading the next book in the series...Grēta

Hero - David Aronowitz: 4.0 stars
Heroine - Allsun O'Hare: 3.5 stars
Steam Level: 3.5 stars

Immortal Hunter is a gut-wrenchingly dark drama, packed full of mystery and action and a testament to the power of selfless love and devotion. The hero and heroine of this novel aren’t perfect people. They’ve made mistakes. Lots of them. With tragic consequences. At the same time you know that no one, no matter how flawed, deserves the misery they face. These characters, perhaps, least of all.

The author has created a great ‘band of brothers’ to center her stories around. The Execution Underground is an international organization of men that fight supernatural baddies, but so far the books center primarily around this one particular group. Each man has his specialty from ghosts, to witches, to shapeshifters. It is a refreshing change from the last decade trend of making the monsters the heroes (note: I still like monster-heroes more than I can say). These heroes are all very human and that gives the story a different flavor. Variety is the spice and all that…

What else can I tell you about this novel? The love scenes are very well done. The author has definitely kept the “love” in the love scene, but also made them steamy. The first half of the story felt a bit slow for me. The action does start from the beginning, or rather the story starts in the middle of the action, but this a reunited lovers story so there is lots of flash backs and introspection along the way (apologies for that ridiculously long sentence). It took me about 40% in to really connect with the characters. I think the past was revealed slowly to give a great moment of realization in the middle, but it was sometimes hard to understand the heroine’s attitudes without the full knowledge of her past. The novel is written in a crisp, smoothly modern style, making for a good solid read.

If you’re looking to go into dark places, this could be a powerful read.

Kowabunga! Kait has done it again! I've inhaled every one of Kait Ballenger's Execution Underground books and this is an awesome addition to that series! Kait's writing is polished and captivating. The suspense is gripping, the romance is hot and the twists are totally unexpected.

David is a demon hunter/exorcist and this book has DEMONS galore! The demon activity is boiling over and nasty doesn't even begin to describe how horrifically bad the creatures are. David has his hands full trying to hunt down one specific demon. On top of that, he's trying to protect Allsun, who is in a coma still recovering from events in the last EU book while also striving to keep his own feelings towards Allsun in check. LOL! I knew that last one wasn't going to happen!

David is our tortured hero and Allsun is our heroine. Both are strong, heroic and so very stubborn. My heart broke for both of them as each of their poignant stories were told. Don't worry, though... even though their situation appears hopeless, there is a light at the end of the tunnel for them.

If you love paranormal romances, you really must read Kait's EU series! This entry, Immortal Hunter, can be read as a stand-alone, but, believe me, your enjoyment would be exponentially increased if you read the preceding books 1st. You'd be introduced to the main characters, to the EU and to the supernatural creatures the EU members put their lives on the line 24-hours-a-day to protect us from. I'm willing to bet you will fall in love with the series too!

5 STARS!

Full Review posted on A Book Lovin' Mama's Blog

WARNING – This book will have you crying…so if you decide to read this out and about, be prepared to have the tissues next to you. I thought I get that out there before I even typed my review of Immortal Hunter because certain scenes made me cry.

In the second book of the Execution Underground series, we have the demon exorcist David Aronowitz trying to do his job at EU, while also worrying about his past love who got hurt in the previous book (Twilight Hunter). He never thought he would see her again after she walked out on him five years ago. (So if you haven’t read Twilight Hunter, you will want to read the first book before this one. Certain events happened that Kait Ballenger will have the characters continue with one month after.)

I give this book 4.5 moons and highly recommend it to paranormal romance readers out there. I highly recommend you read Shadow Hunter and Twilight Hunter first though. You don’t want to miss out on this series. Kait Ballenger’s Execution Underground series is one series that has you constantly turning the pages to find out what is going to happen next in the story.

Oh…and can I say I look forward to Shane’s story. =)

I loved it!! It kept me glued to the pages not wanting to look away for a moment! I might have cried a little (I won't admit it!) but it was worth it!!

This was an enthralling read that had me turning the pages in anticipation. Ms. Ballenger has taken me on an emotional journey with David and Allsún’s story that was heart wrenching but beautifully executed! Well done!

I can't wait for the next book in the series!!

A great book, the wonderful story of David and Allsun, showcasing some “what ifs” scenarios involving two very strong minded people who love one another very much, it also involves the growing connection between teammates, secrets, heartache, evilness, joy and hope. I look forward to the next book in this exciting series.

This book starts slow with some awkward writing, enough so I considered giving up. What kept me going is the fascinating world where there are supernatural beings blended beneath mundane existence and hunters sworn to keep the evil ones in check…as much as possible.

While a paranormal romance, the initial scenes are pure hunter with a lot of introspection and guilt from David along with a blunted affect. Allie isn’t much better as she begins in the victim role (literally in a medical coma), but she wakes up fighting. She is far from distanced even though Allie has to claw her way through a drug fog as she heads off to protect the innocent.

We learn about their prior relationship in detailed flashbacks that set the scene for the present. This technique worked for me, though normally it wouldn’t have, because the past had never been resolved, making its feelings firmly entrenched in the present regardless of when the conflict occurred. It also helps to see how the present day David has matured from his Paladin/hero past self.

I ended up liking both main characters though it took some time to engage with them. I can’t mention specifics without spoilers, but one of the reveals deepening Allie’s character is a complex real-life situation I felt was well handled. Their main conflict first appears to be a simple miscommunication, but there’s nothing simple about it. The resolution comes over a series of interactions and seems more realistic than often found in suspense-based romance. They have a second chance and are willing to do the hard work to succeed this time.

I found the interactions between the hunters equally amusing and annoying because, before they focused on business, the hunters were all heavily alpha male in their speech patterns and behavior. How they came across as distinct despite the he-man posturing is well done as is that they don’t demonstrate these characteristics as much in broader circumstances.

One of the weaknesses I noticed is in how the story, while not exactly contradicting itself, deflates the power of crises with later reveals. Oddly, things that appeared initially as close to continuity errors were strengthened by later reveals as well. The read requires a willingness to trust the author, possibly why it is now the second (or third depending how you count the initial novella) in the series rather than the first.

This is a dark story with graphic violence. The point-of-view is shared with both secondary characters and the villain, so we get a greater understanding than just reviewing the crime scene after the fact. There’s also swearing and on-screen, detailed lovemaking, so this won’t be for all readers. All of it has meaning within the story, though, and the relationship struggles felt real to me. They offered some hope against the dark background because David and Allie remained committed to each other whatever they tried to believe.

One more mention of the world, but we see reactions from outsiders and glimpses of the Execution Underground organization that lay down clues all is not right in there. It both deepens the world and hints at more to come in later books. This kind of complexity is a significant part of why I kept reading long enough to become fully engaged with the characters and story.

Ultimately, I found the world intriguing, the characters grew on me, and the story had enough layers to pull me in and overcame any weaknesses I saw with the exception of the marketing blurb. That text gave away the big reveal and helped make the story feel slow at the start because I was expecting the final conflict from the start. Here’s an alternate (if rough) blurb that speaks to how the book read for me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Young and driven, David never expected his need to save people would cost the love of his life and yet Allie had stomped out the same day he committed to the Execution Underground never to return. He never forgot her or loved another. When his failure to defeat a demon puts her in harm’s way five years later, all his protective instincts roar to life along with the guilt of knowing he failed her.
Allie wakes from a coma in a hospital room after being kidnapped and tortured by a demon. Instincts she’s suppressed since the day David chose demon hunting over their chance at a life together surge to the fore. She escapes into the cold, her hospital gown flapping around her, to hunt once again. Fae skills let her commandeer a taxi to take her to an address where she senses demon activity, but she’s too late. The family inside has been brutally murdered and none other than her ex-fiance has arrived to investigate.
Unresolved feelings and long-held secrets cannot chill the heat that still sparks between them, but can Allie forgive David for what he unknowingly allowed to happen? Can he understand the secrets she kept then and even now?
With demon plots afoot and the enemy at her door, no way is David going to risk Allie a second time. If only they can make peace, he’ll never leave her unprotected again no matter what it takes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s not perfect, but that’s the essence of the story for me while carefully skirting the big reveals that are worth the wait.

P.S. I received this title from the publisher through NetGalley in return for an honest read.

Finding His Love Anew

Allsun had been hiding with the werewolves since she left David five years earlier. She didn't want to let him back into her life, but demons were possessing and killing families with an infant. They needed to work with the team to solve the problem.

Liked this 2nd novel

Liked this 2nd novel, was quirky although not as good as the first one. Author’s still developing her characters. Good read though, you won’t be bored

This book was so fantastic! I'm really enjoying this series (though I wish it'd been longer, with more time with these characters!) and I can't wait to read more!

Note: While this review will be spoiler free, it may reference events in previous books in the series.

After being kidnapped and tortured by the sociopathic Robert, David’s ex fiancé has been left in a coma. With Allsún being half fae—and therefore a natural enemy to the demons—David knows it’s bad news when one of her doctors becomes possessed.

To make matters worse, demon-possession fueled murders are sweeping through town. The crimes are particularly heinous, and the victims infants and their families. As the resident exorcist of the local Execution Underground unit, David knows it’s his responsibility to hunt down those responsible… and fast.

When Allsún awakes, she agrees to stay near so he can keep her safe, but only if she can help. But after more than five years apart, working together opens old wounds. As the Execution Underground race against the clock, David realizes he will do anything to not just keep Allsun alive but also get her back in his life again.

The military aspect mixed with the supernatural in Immortal Hunter works well, especially as it looks as if each new installment will focus on a different supernatural sect, keeping it fresh. With David being the exorcist of the unit, demons are at the centre of Immortal Hunter, and we get to learn about their history and hierarchy. I would have liked to have learned more about the Fae, considering Allsún is half fae, but there was enough that I’d be interested to read another installment featuring them. I’m also definitely intrigued by the other Hunters in the group, I just wish they featured more heavily. Saying that, there was some foreshadowing here (for what I’m guessing will be the next book) with Shane, that looks set to delve deeper into the witches and occult.

The plot moved along at a good pace, although the nature of the demon’s attacks made me uncomfortable at times and the big showdown felt somewhat rushed. With this being the second (or third depending on how you view it) installment I would have liked to have seen more of a long reaching story arc begin to emerge, or, after that monster cliffhanger at the end of Shadow Hunter, at least some sort of update on Tiffany. However, the Demons discovery of Allsún may have more far reaching consequences in future books.

My major issue with Immortal Hunter, in fact with this series in general, is the overall characterization. Pretty much every character had a emotional hair trigger causing them to have immediate, extreme reactions; when they’re angry they punch a wall, sad and they immediately cry, laugh and it’s hysterically. It left me feeling desensitized to their emotions, leaving very little build up, so that when a situation actually warranted such a reaction it didn’t have the same impact. It left me feeling unconnected to the majority of the characters, making it difficult to not only root for them but, in some cases, to even like them very much, as they angrily lashed out at one another.

While I really like the worldbuilding in this series and am intrigued to see where it goes, my struggles with the characterization took away from the relationships, and therefore ultimately the romance in Immortal Hunter. I’m left feeling unsure if I’ll continue with the Execution Underground.

Kait Ballenger is a new “voice” in paranormal romance and I really love the world she’s built with her Execution Underground series. It started with the outstanding prequel Shadow Hunter and continued with her first full length novel Twilight Hunter. Her second book, Immortal Hunter, is no slouch in the series but does dim a bit in the shine department compared to the other books in the series. But I think there’s a very good reason for that. It might have been that the difficult subject matter may have overshadowed the action we come to want a bit more of in our paranormal romances.

But like I said, this is still great entry in the series and a solid four on my rating scale. One thing that Ms. Ballenger does in her books, and that I love her for, is that she introduces the next couple to be featured in the upcoming book in the current book. And I’m not talking just a little a little bump in the hallway kind of greeting. We get to actually see interaction, dialogue longer than two sentences, conflict, and of course the foreshadowing to the next book.

It was in the last book, Twilight Hunter, that we met Allsún and learned of her and David’s past. But don’t worry, we actually get the full story in Immortal Hunter. We also get a surprise or three as to what happened between these two former love birds, as well. I don’t know who I blame more for their break up five years prior, David or Allsún (Allie). But getting back together isn’t as easy as it would seem when David wants to protect Allie from the demons who want to get rid of the last living fae on this side of the fae world.

It’s a great story with twists and obstacles for our hero and heroine to negotiate. I just think the paranormal romance side got hidden behind the brutal carnage of the murders that occurring and the glaring reality of the tragedy that happened to Allie after she broke up (did they actually break up?) with David five years ago.

If I was presented with this book three or more years ago, I wouldn’t have been able to read it. Flat out, would. not. read. But I guess as my family has gotten older or as I’ve gotten more jaded, I’ve toughed up. Don’t get me wrong, I still tear up over dead animals in the road. I just must have lost some soft spot on my soul somewhere in the last two years. I blame Christy at Love of Books. I’m sure it’s her fault. She’s pretty jaded and I’m sure it’s catchy.

A lot of the story focused on Allie’s feelings but I felt like we missed a big chunk of David’s feelings when the big reveal came to David. It was almost too focused on Allie, even though Ms. Ballenger’s books have all been dual POV so far. I just would’ve wanted to see David literally fall to pieces like I thought he would have finding out what happened all those years ago. It was the ultimate failure on his part. Ooooo, wouldn’t you like to know?!?!?

See? I told you Ms. Ballenger writes good stories!!!

If you read this story, you need to make sure you read all the way through the acknowledgements portion. I didn’t the first time around. I did, though, when I went back to write this review.

I <3 you, Kait. *hugs*

Another fabulous instalment in Ms Ballengers Execution Underground series and lovers of a good paranormal romance book really have to get this book. This series is just getting into it's stride and there's still so much more to come that readers would be crazy to miss it. Filled with diverse characters who all have one thing in common, a real need to protect the innocent. These characters spring to life in the readers imagination and this book is no exception.
David is an exorcist and together with his fellow hunters working for Exercution Underground he hunts demons. It's an ability that he's used since he was a teenager but then he worked alongside the only woman that he has ever loved ,Allsun. Tragically they are been separated now as Allsun could not accept Davids desire to keep hunting demons when all she wanted was for them both to have a family and a normal life. Allsun is half pixie and that makes her prey to demons and now it looks as if the demons not only know about her but are targeting her! David's only just found her again and he's not about to stand by and just watch her suffer but dark forces are getting closer and Davids biggest fear is about to come true!
This is a paranormal romance and there is a very good story complete with evil bad guys driving the plot of this book but for this reader it was the interaction between the hero David and heroine Allsun that drove this story. They are clearly still madly in love but getting them to admit it to each other felt like pulling teeth! Such a stubborn well meaning pair and I wanted to just bang their heads together! David s everything a hero should be, he's gorgeous, brave, loyal, faithful and possesses a wicked sense of humour. Oh and his talents in the bedroom are legendary! But ask him to sit down and lay his cards fully on the table and the poor guy is absolutely clueless! As a heroine Allsun is just so full of love. She's driven by her need to have it all, David and children and she's made choices that may have felt right at the time but she's not been truly happy. She's carrying secrets and such sorrow that my heart went out to her. Oh she's no pushover and certainly not a weak character but she is someone who I really warmed to and wanted her to get her happy ever after. Their journey is fraught with danger and a twist that will rock fans of this series to their core.
Although part of a series this book is easily read as a standalone but please if at all possible read these books in order. It's a joy to read a book that comes to life and I applaud the author on such an amazing read. This tortured couple are such a stubborn pair but clearly meant for each other. It's an enthralling story and just so emotional but don't worry there is plenty of action and mayhem to keep the readers attention . The words just flow so naturally and it's a storyline that will touch many readers hearts. It's such an exciting world that Ms Ballenger brings to life and I for one really wish she could write faster. In fact I think she has now become an auto buy for me! This book is well and truly recommended !

REVIEW: IMMORTAL HUNTER is the second full length (and third storyline) in Kait Ballenger’s paranormal, adult romance series-Execution Underground-focusing on an elite group of hunters whose job it is to protect the human world from the evil side of the supernatural element. This is exorcist David Aronowitz and half-fae Allsun O’Hare’s second chance storyline. When demons begin targeting families and children, David is tasked with uncovering the demon responsible for the destruction of so many lives. The novel can be read as a stand alone without too much difficulty although reading the series from the beginning will add a sense of cohesion to the story.

Kait Ballenger pulls the reader into a graphically violent storyline where no one is safe from a demonic revenge of biblical proportions. When the identity of the demon is revealed, Allsun will become the pawn and the vessel in an ancient war between the Fae and demon kind.

Allsun and David’s relationship is rocky-there is a prior history between our couple that is slowly revealed throughout the story but a history that is rocked by a Allsun’s secret that she has kept until now. There is a definite attraction between our couple but their emotional turmoil is hardened by a history of angry words and mistrust.

IMMORTAL HUNTER is a well-paced story about second chances, forgiveness and revenge. Kait combines biblical mythology with the supernatural powers resulting in a storyline of sacrifice and loss. The world building continues as many of the previous storyline characters play a pivotal role in the current story and a hint that perhaps Damon’s story may continue in the near future.

My only concern was the quick resolution. I felt that the ending was rushed and the epilogue jumped forward two years without acknowledging one plot point and couple in particular.

Overall, IMMORTAL HUNTER is an exciting and interesting storyline. There is the potential for another Hunter to find love when Shane discovers that the woman he has been attracted to has some hidden powers of her own. Kait Ballenger writes from the heart with an emotional storyline that will resonate with many who have loved and lost.

Immortal Hunter, is the second in the exciting Execution Underground series, where all the members have different supernatural policing specialties. I read the first one, Twilight Hunter, and really enjoyed Jace and Frankie’s story. This one was about David and his ex-fiance, Allie, and I have to say it was a solid entry into the series but not quite as good as the first one, at least that was my take on it.

David is a demon exorcist that has been in love with Allie since they were teenagers. Unfortunately, five years previously, the two had a horrible fight and nothing was ever resolved. This book starts with Allie still hospitalized due to the coma she has been in after being tortured in the first book. As the last of the Fae remaining in this world, Allie is a natural enemy of demons.

Demons are attacking and killing families with babies. And the deaths are pretty horrific. David is not only a hunter but he also is pretty much a detective too. When Allie wakes up from the coma and turns up at one of the crime scenes, she comes face to face with the man she has never stopped loving, David. Long story short, he becomes her protector since the demons are hunting her. Actually not just hunting her,as they have plans to use her as a vehicle to unleash an ancient evil upon humanity.

I had some minor problems with this book. The couple would be at a horrible death scene, and they would end up in a deeply personal conversation, just steps away from gore. That just didn’t work for me. The other thing was, David is acting as her protector, and then when things are bad between them emotionally, he leaves her alone for the night. Really? That was right out of a scary movie when you are yelling at the girl to not go to the basement. She does it anyway. I was yelling at David(in my head) to not leave her. Sure it moved the story along but didn’t make sense with how protective of her he was. And he left her alone more then once.

David and Allie were a good couple but it took awhile to get to there. Neither one of them ever fell out of love with the other. There was a major misunderstanding in the past and the author takes the reader back in time at different points to tell what happened five years before. Most of it was pretty heartbreaking and very necessary to the story.

This story has lots of gory moments and steamy ones as well. I liked the idea of a demon hunter but I just enjoyed Jace’s and Frankie's story more. Maybe it’s because I like werewolves much more then demons as a supernatural character and that is certainly not the authors fault. She definitely is a good writer and I really do look forward to the other hunters stories-Shane in particular,and we may have met his HEA in this book.

I feel like this was well written with only some minor problems but it just could have been a bit better. My main reason for this, and my true test for a great book-it just didn’t make me read non-stop like my favorite reads do. I do believe that most people will enjoy the read and actually, I did too, mostly.(RabidReads.com)
