Seeing Red: Scorched

Rate this book
Down the twists and turns of the London alleyways, where Chinatown meets the high-streets, lies a small venue where unknown rock bands often play to crowds of less than one-hundred.

Isaac is nineteen, living on the sofa of his best friend's brother - Eric - after his bible-loving parents tossed him aside because of his sexuality. After two years of struggling to make sense of his life, Eric and Charlotte convince Isaac to attend Red's gig; an up and coming rock band with a small cult following.

All hell breaks loose and Isaac is left injured, with the whereabouts of his friends unknown and his body crippled on the ground. It's then that the four members - Troy, Nicolai, Kyle and Moss - aid Isaac by infecting him with a 'magical' virus that grants immortality in exchange for consuming blood.

The 'Paranorm' world is exposed to Isaac. Vampires, werewolves and warlocks lurk in the depths of the city he has lived in his entire life, but he won't become one with the night until he completes his nine-month transition, leaving him in the hands of the band and at the mercy of vampire politics.

Isaac is a sweetheart, and of course isn’t at all prepared to find himself in transition to be a Vampire. But with Nicolai’s loving care, along with his new friends Kyle and Troy, who all share a nest with the steely Moss, he will get through this.

I thought this was fun. The world-building was thorough. I understood what was going on from the beginning, and I really enjoyed how Isaac transitioned on his journey.

** 3.5 stars**

I enjoy vampire stories, even if I don’t read them often nowdays, and this one started off very promising. However, the book was too long and the plot went places that had me shaking my head in bafflement.

So. Vampires. Werewolves. And...more. This story focus on the vampires of the band Red and Isaac, the human they saved after a fire broke out at one of their gigs that left Isaac half dead. I liked the twist in the vampire tale offered by the author. Turned humans become ghouls for nine months, while they complete their transition. It’s a weird stage where vampiric abilities start to develop but if the ghoul eats or drinks anything other than blood, it’s all reversed and the ghoul returns to the state they were in when they were turned. In Isaac’s case, that wasn’t an option because he would die immediately.

So the book takes place in the 9 months it takes Isaac to transition. The other members of the nest, Moss, Troy, Kyle, and Nicolai, all have distinct voices, with Kyle being a particular favourite of mine. They went for a Christmas trip, they hung out, they went to a club full of other Paranorms, met Troy’s brother, the King, and life went on. Details of vampire history and the political goings on of the paranormal world were revealed slowly so it didn’t feel like info dumping.

I enjoyed the action scenes and seeing Isaac Vamp out as well as the drinking from the neck while humping sessions! Hot! But I wasn’t sure where it was all going. The story was laid out in a way that Nicolai was the love interest, taking things slowly and forging a bond with Isaac. Nicolai was the voice of reason, always trying to protect him and calm him down. They wouldn’t have full on sex because Nicolai said “It would be better” after Isaac’s transition. This was a bit weird and felt unsubstantiated from the plot, what with the “we shouldn’t have sex until you’re turned.” Sure, they made out but everything was just so slow, and pretty boring, frankly.

And then at 70%, I was smacked upside the head with a complete change in direction. I had not seen it coming but I have to say, there were aspects of the story that felt like plot holes, which I guess, were not. But please, don’t change the love interest at 70%. FFS. I was so thrown by that and although it made more sense in the end, there was no freaking time to fully explore the actual relationship that happened. I wanted a whole other book on that new relationship alone. I kept thinking, “This is what I should be reading about from the get go! It’s not safe, it’s not boring, and it’s hot!” For this reason, combined with the super slow pace, my rating was lower than I hoped it would be when I started the book.

Fans of paranormal stories might be interested in this because it does offer a different take on a trope that is very overdone. But, mind the gap. The sudden shift at 70% will come out of nowhere and will leave you hanging. On another note, I saw the author’s bio and was super impressed at his ability to write so well and create such a complicated world at such a young age. Kudos author!

Recommend.

This story which follows the authors previous book Omega Moon is not an M-Preg like Omega, but continues in the same fantastic world that was created in that book. It is a part of that same world, but can be read as a stand-alone.
Isaac, the young man who is living with his best friend after being kicked out of his home once his parents found out he was gay, is out for an evening to see a new band called Seeing Red in an underground venue. He doesn’t know that the band members are actually really vampires, he just thinks that they are wearing disguises to look like the creatures who definitely live amongst them.
After the night comes to a disastrous conclusion, leaving his best friends whereabouts unknown, his best friends sister dead and Isaac himself dying upon the stage that the band was to perform on, Isaac finds that he himself has been turned and is transitioning into a vampire.
The transition takes place over a significant period of time and because he needs the blood of his sires and each of the band members were needed to save him, he finds himself living with them. His transition isn’t easy and he finds himself struggling to adapt to his new life. He is helped along his journey by his vampire sires and almost immediately finds himself having feelings for the one named Nicoli who returns his attraction. Isaac and Nicoli build their relationship slowly over a matter of months but as Nicoli is falling in love, Isaac finds himself torn between the very sweet vampire Nicoli and his growing attraction to the cold and dark vampire Moss.
It was amazing to watch Isaac learn to embrace his new life as he discovered things about himself that he had no idea he was capable of.
Add to this… suspense and mystery and a plot against the Royal vampire family and you have enough twists and turns to keep you turning the pages of this book just as fast as you can read.
While I would call this a romance, the sex doesn’t happen right away. This is another reason this book is more complex than it seems initially, Isaac waits and gives great thought to the gifting of his body to someone. But when the sex does happen?... Man oh man it is smoking hot! This author can write sex scenes as well as any I’ve ever read.
I loved that T.C. Orton’s world of supes just keeps growing and getting better.
The characters have great chemistry together and even the secondary characters are well developed. I hope that T.C. Orton continues to spin off these guys, because I think as a series, this could be one of the greats in the paranormal genre.

Seeing Red
By T.C. Orton
Four stars

T.C. Orton presents us with a really interesting contemporary take on vampires, and that alone has earned him most of his stars in my review. His world, in which a little nest of vampires – Moss, Kyle, Troy and Nicolai - make their way in modern London, is neatly described and nicely defined in a larger global context of paranormal beings and politics. Isaac, a feckless, nearly homeless nineteen-year-old is suddenly cast in their midst, and now there are five, one of whom is a newborn and needs not only to be taught, but protected.

The story is told through Isaac’s eyes, and his awkward approach to being immortal and being part of a family of sorts is rather endearingly portrayed. There is sufficient page time given to the differing backgrounds and histories of his four brothers in blood, and yet I somehow didn’t quite feel any great depth – although I knew it was there. The whole vampire political system is hard to make fresh in the shadow of “True Blood,” and the emphasis on hidden dance clubs was perhaps less to my taste than a more complex vampire social network would have been. I’m old. I want at least some of my vampires to have libraries and live in old houses or quiet apartments. I think the author’s age shows in the kind of hip urban world he imagines for his vampire musketeers. On the other hand, I did very much like the insistence on agency – making choices that determine one’s own direction. Isaac is much like any young person – on the edge of adulthood, yet still unsure of who he is and how he fits in. This is very nicely drawn.

There is a great deal of interesting stuff going on in Orton’s head – not the least of which is the emotional nuances of these vampire – but there is a lack of literary discipline that kind of derails the greater potential impact of the overall narrative. As in the other Orton book I’ve read, the writing is all over the place, and the editing is dodgy. Weird word choices and marginal grammar make it feel like a college freshman creating writing exercise. It bothered me less here than in “Warlock Academy,” and I have to repeat my wish that Orton will take on a serious editor who will crack the whip over him and make him live up to the promise of his fertile imagination.

***3.5 Stars for a Curious World***

Hi, I’m Cat and I’m a vampire book addict. I was excited when I saw the cover (before I ever saw the blurb) because of the beautiful red-eyes that told me I was getting blood drinkers!

This book follows Isaac and his path in life, specifically the divergent moment when a club stampeded leaves him so injured that the band members collectively agree to turn him. Having one sire is standard, but four? This intrigued me! Rather than “here drink my blood” and you’re a vampire, Mr. Orton has taken this process and made turning the same length of time as a standard human pregnancy. During this time, Isaac is considered a ghoul, and must consume the blood of his sires daily. Failure to complete transition means he returns to human with the same injuries he had at the time of his turning. Okay, this is going really nifty places, right? Totally not the standard, and I’m loving it!

Then Isaac hooks up with one of his sires, Nicolai, and starts a relationship, but he’s also inexplicably drawn to another of them, Moss. It’s at this point that things begin to break down for me. The plot devolved into a multitude of subplots and situations that kept putting Isaac in the path of Moss coming to his rescue (very damsel in distress), yet Isaac is still maintaining his partnership with Nicolai. However, the “chemistry” between he and Nicolai seemed contrived and forced, more father/son than lovers, and it kept me off balance the remainder of the book.

The ending thrilled me, because I was rooting for that particular outcome almost from the very start (I have a thing for broody, temperamental males), but the book’s constantly shifting focus was to its detriment. However, I still enjoyed it enough to rate it 3.5 stars, and I am looking forward to reading more by this author.

OMG I LOVED THIS BOOK! I wasn’t sure I would based on the blurb. I had some doubts but I was wrong!!!!!!!! This was creative, entertaining, and wildly original!

We have all read many vampire stories. Probably enough that we may even roll our eyes when we see another being published. Well if this book is anything to go by then know it hasn’t ALL been written yet.

We have four band members of RED and one night Isaac goes out with his best friend Charlotte, and his roommate Eric, and what promises to be a fun night turns into a nightmare.

I won’t give anything away but I will tell you when Isaac wakes all is not the same and neither is he.
I adored every character in this book. That’s not easy to do. Many times I couldn't like them all or one irritated me. Nope. Each one was excellently written and they were their own character. The vampires weren’t cliché; they were unique.

Isaac has so many struggles in this story. I’m glad he didn’t just have it easy. His obstacles were real and they made sense and I was glad he had them. How he starts and how he ends is different and though my heart broke quite a few times; in the end everything was how it should be.

I do hope there are more books to this series because I have no doubt I’ll be devouring them all!
Excellent!

It was a nice and entertaining book to read. I’m not really big fan of vampires, although I do enjoy them if the story is right. This time, it was one of the times I did like them. The blurb doesn’t really tell much of the story, maybe just how it all start, but there was a lot more than it said there. On that matter it was a good thing for me because it was hard to know what to expect, especially on terms of romance, and I like that. Everything was unexpected and that was fine with me.

The plot is good, although I think there were a lot of unfinished conflicts, and I expect that means a sequel is being consider or else it would be a little disappointing. I still enjoy a lot what I’d read. It had a steady and enjoyable pace.

The main characters were something that really got my attention, especially because of the emotions they made me feel. It is one of the few times where I was able to like a book even when I didn’t liked the main character. It wasn’t that I dislike Isaac that much, I guess he was nice, but I just didn’t feel much sympathy towards him and it bother me a little. It was different with the other characters. I found them so much more interesting and I wanted to know more about them. Maybe that’s what makes me think about a sequel, because they were so great. I was particularly fond on Kyle, who was so sweet. I hope he could take a more leading role. I know there’s a book 1.5, but I truly think that will still be too little on this characters.

Overall it was a nice book, sweeter than I would like but I guess it might be a good thing for other readers. I’ll keep checking for possible sequels tough and start reading Interlude (book 1.5) as soon as possible.

I really, really loved this book!
Although I had this book for some months now, I just now managed to read it and all I could think was: why didn't I start it sooner?

The beginning of this story is close to my heart because it describes of a similar situation (no paranorms, of course) that happened in my town a couple of years ago.

We get to discover the stages of becoming a vampire within the Omega Moon Universe by following Isaac's journey to discover his true self. The characters and situations are wonderfully described and when turning the page to see what happens next, you can imagine yourself within the story, sitting right next to Isaac and wanting to cheer him on, yell at him then cheer him on again :)

Before reading Seeing Red: Scorched, if someone asked me if I enjoyed reading the paranormal mm genre, my reply would have been "it's not my thing", or "I haven't found yet"... Now I found THE author that writes perfectly (from my pov) in this genre! TC Orton is an amazing writer!

Now...when do we get to see what happens next?

I picked this not expecting much other then a good read to pass the time. I was very pleasantly surprised to find a fantastic book that has everything I look for in a book that I would recommend to friends. I really hope there will eventually be a 2nd book that will expand on the story because honestly it's not over. Luke is still out there and Nikolai's story needs to be told. Every character feels as though they have more to do rather then have it stopped where it's left at. Seriously a great book!

So much goodness! The characters are sexy flawed boys transitioning to even sexier men. The writing style is wonderful, well devoloped plot, characters you want hug while shacking the crap out of them and sexy scenes tense and dirty so perfect. Well worth the time to read. I can't wait to read the next.

This started off gruesome which almost turned me off but it turned out to be a fun read. Isaac was a hot mess of a ghoul who could not stay out of trouble. But he was kind of endearing as he discovered himself while becoming a vampire. I was also not surprised at his change of heart, I just would have liked more of the less grumpy side of Moss.

Isaac was tossed out of his very religious parents house when they found out he was gay. He moved into the apartment of his best friends brother. When Charlotte and Eric finally convince him to go see the band "Red" with them, an evening out turns tragic. When Isaac is seriously injured the band members, Troy, Kyle, Nicolai and Moss, come to his rescue. As long as he follows the rules for the 9 month transition time, the virus he was infected with will save him.
I loved watching all of the relationships develop. Nicolai felt an instant attraction to Isaac. He was so sweet and patient with Isaac and helped him the best he could. Their relationship was slowly growing and Isaac was beginning to feel torn between Nick and Moss. The two couldn't be more different. While Nick was open and kind and loving, Moss was closed off, hard and cruel to most everyone.
I understand Isaac's behavior and ever changing feelings. He was going through so much to begin with on top of dealing with confusing feelings. He didn't know why he was developing feelings for Moss, only that he was and they were changing the way he felt for Nick. I believe Moss tried to keep his distance because he also had feelings towards Isaac. He didn't have a great past and he didn't feel he was good enough for Isaac, and he didn't want to hurt one of his best friends.
I loved the way this was written and the development of the characters. It was so different than other paranormal books that I've read and that was a bit refreshing. There was drama and danger also so it certainly wasn't boring. Orton kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. While the book centered on Isaac, there was enough about all of the characters and their growing relationships. I was never really angry with any of them which was a nice change of pace as well. This m/m vampire book was definitely a great read!

I enjoyed this paranormal story immensely; it grabbed my attention straight away, always a good sign. The way the story was told was easy to follow, no complicated words, which are sometimes used for paranormal books, which can make reading confusing. It was different to what I've previously read; usually I read books where the characters are already vampires/ware wolves /Demons etc. I have never actually read a book where we see them start as human and then the stages of the transition occurring, or have it explained why they became supernatural in the first instance. This just worked for me; it made it a thoroughly enjoyable read and made me extremely happy, from the start of the journey through the story.
The main character is Isaac and we follow his journey from human to ghoul to vampire and his struggles along the way. His struggles with his change, his friendships lost and friendships made. He has nothing in his life other than his two best friends; one of who he has tragically lost. Isaac has two love interests in this book, Nicolai, who’s gentle, understanding, and loving, and Moss who is often agitated and moody towards Isaac. I found myself getting anxious on behalf of Isaac, having a real sense of what's going to happen to him before he did.
The other characters are really interesting. Two others in particular, both very different, Kyle and Troy, but I loved them. Troy is royalty and not interested in his heritage, while Kyle is a typical lad, with behaviour to match, he is a loveable character and he takes care of Issac.
There is a little humour along the way, as well as love and romance; and a m/m, which I enjoyed reading. So something for everyone!

From that review: "Seeing Red: Scorched by T.C. Orton represents both a new author and a new universe for me. I had not read any other books by this author so I was unfamiliar with the Omega Moon universe that this story is set in. That said, its true you don't have to have read the other novel to be able to understand or enjoy this vampire tale of romance as it has very little to do with the werewolves of the Omega Moon story except for one thin plot thread.

I think what I enjoyed best about this story was the format and interesting manner in which Isaac is turned into a vampire. Its not an automatic process but one that takes nine months...sort of like birthing a baby. And it moves forward in increments of time just as you mark it off in a baby's book. I liked that sort of progress chart. Funny, sort of ironic in comparison. At least I hope that's what the author was going for. It marks the changes, inward and outward, that Isaac, really a 19 year old, has to go through. And that includes vampire royal politics, his old conservative family who kicked Isaac out, and so much more. Like puppy love and maybe the real thing..."

I enjoyed this vampire enemies to lovers book, with five individual and entertaining characters who all fit with their own stores and with each other well. My only gripe is that I thought the transition from seeing someone as an enemy then a lover happened a bit quick - I like mine drawn out longer with furtive longing made a little more explicit... it was just a tad subtle.

That said - a very enjoyable book and I'll be reading more by this author.

Hands down, Seeing Red: Scorched is my favorite paranormal romance ever! A group of sexy, mysterious vampires and one new and confused ghoul, who is determined to find his place in this new world, had me unable to put this book down until the end. It left me full of love for these men, heartbroken for a romance that wasn't meant to be and hopeful for something even better. Looking forward to the next book in this series!

A tragedy at a club changes Isaac's life forever and leaves him depending on four mysterious men for survival. In a world full of beings he never knew existed, Isaac must figure out who he wants to be and who he wants to share his immortal life with. It's never that easy though! In a battle against the rebels, lives will forever be changed, lines will be crossed and friendships will be damaged along the way. Scorched had me biting my nails, nervous for the unknown and praying for a HEA. Doesn't really get much better than that!

This book was completely different than. most I read on a daily basis. Normally you read a book and can sense where the story is going. Not this book. At first, I found myself thinking what is going on, but then I wrapped my head around where I finally hoped the story might go and it absolutely took off from there. The story had a slow burn which you know can make for a more incredible storyline.

There are plot twists that you will never see coming which keeps you intrigued and dying to find out what will happen next. The heat factor is off the charts. The suspense will have you on the edge of your seat. The action will.make your pulse quicken. So, if you enjoy m/m and vampires you may want to get that one click finger ready.

This author had my attention from the get go. I've never read anything like this. It really took you through the change from human to ghoul to vampire. I enjoyed this transformation. Then you get to experience an array of emotions like rage, admiration, love and to the very rawness of attraction. This story is intense and a great read.

Weird. Pulsating vampires with bulging veins. Characters that pull a complete 180. Apparently the people where the author comes from never walk, only pace. I liked the premise but there was just so much that was dumb and the writing wasn't that great either.
