In this second novel of the Lillian Dove Mystery series, just when Lillian thinks she may have her life back on track, mayhem hits. This time, she is accused of murder. Her only choice—to prove her innocence. Only, she is dragged further into criminal dysfunction as the FBI requests her help, and a CEO with political ambitions believes he needs to get rid of her before she pulls apart his legacy ruse for greater power.
Suppose, offering comedic dysfunction, is not only a suspenseful mystery but an important second step for Lillian’s self-identity--and possibly for the reader’s. She needs to believe she will be abetted in her investigation to prove her innocence and that she can oppose those things or people which seem to overpower her.

Suppose... The characters... Now them... well... you will be left wandering. Suppose... The plot, will keep you turning the pages faster than you realize. You'll finish this book before you know it. And sit and ponder just what happen. A fantastic read!
Do you ever wonder what could have been? In this book, we meet Lillian Dove and get a glimpse into her life. What could go wrong you ask? Just everything.
D.J. Adamson kicks it up a notch in "Suppose", the second Lillian Dove novel.
Lillian is now a full time business owner. She has inherited AAA Discount Liquor store in Frytown, which is rather ironic, because Lillian is a recovering alcoholic. And it is the fact that she is now business owner that leads to touble.
It was the suicide of her best friend Cressie that sent Lillian down the road to sobriety and it is Cressie's one time boyfriend, Kenny, that attempts to blackmail Lillian. Kenny claims to have a video that shows that Lillian was responsible for Cressie's death, for $100,000 Kenny won't turn the video over to the police.
Lillian ends up in Iowa City where she intends to confront Kenny and tell him to shove it. On the way home she discovers that drugs have been slipped in her just minutes before she is pulled over by the police. When she gets back to Frytown she finds a murdered Kenny laying in the kitchen of her condo. And now the FBI has entered the case, with employees that aren't quite what they seem.
The Second Lillian Dove includes all the fun loving characters from "Admit to Mayhem": Leveque, the ego driven Detective and Lillian's nemesis; Charles, the Frytown police chief; Dahlia, Lillian's fun loving mother and fo course Bacardi the cat.
Lillian is a sassy, adventure seeking friend to everyone, who can't keep her nose out of the police investigation, which leads to nothing but trouble. D.J. Adamson has created a likable character that the reader can't help but wish for her success. And in "Suppose" we get a closer look at what has brought Lillian to where she is today.
A well written story that grabs the reader's interest right from the beginning. No long, slow, lead up to the action. The reader is drawn in right away. The characters around Lillian are well developed and add depth to the story. Both Lillian Dove novels are well worth the read.
After a life of battling with addiction, Lillian Dove is sober and owns her own liquor store. When her best friend dies of an apparent suicide, she has her suspicions that she was actually murdered by her boyfriend. When she is blackmailed about the murder, Lillian’s life begins to spiral.
Characters were very well fleshed out, Lillian in particular. It was easy to feel her loneliness and her upset. Despite this, she isn’t willing to give in easily. After everything she’s been through, she’s used to standing her ground. I found that to be a very likable characteristic. Background information was fed in well throughout the story, giving the reader a full insight of the characters and town. Even still, there is plenty of suspense.
Reagan Boggs did a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life.
This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
I had requested and received audiobook version of this book for free from the author, in exchange for an unbiased review.
This turned out to be one of better written suspense books I read in March. I was moderately intrigued going in, but didn't have high expectations. But as I kept listening to the story, I got more n more engaged in it and kept wanting to reach the finish asap. Adamson tells the story in a very interesting way, that grabs your attention from the very beginning. The characters are well written and makes you connect with them, which is a must for any good story, imo.
The narration by Reagan Boggs was alright and I have no complaints there.
Five year sober now she owns a liquor store, how ironic is that. Cressie suicide is the one who lead her to being sober. Now Cassie Ex boyfriend wants to blackmail Lillian , saying he has proof that she was responsible. Things go bad to worse when she goes to confront him, and he is later found dead. Good narration by Reagen Boggs, brought the tension and story to life. Given ARC audio for my voluntary review and my honest r.
Suppose (Lillian Dove #2) was a good read by D.J. Adamson. Mayhem hit's Lillian's life again just as she thought she was getting her life back on track. Except now she finds herself accused of murder and needing to prove her innocence. The FBI requests her help while a CEO with political ambitions believes he must get rid of her. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read more of Lillian Dove's story.
I like the way alcoholism is treated in this account. The times you laughed so hard, everyone around the room asks, "what novel is making you laugh?" SUPPOSE, CHECK IT OUT!
Lillian is contacted by someone from her past, someone wanting something off her. In the end, Lillian is caught up in a very complex and dangerous situation, which endangers not only her life, but those around her. Excellent mystery read.
( Format : Audiobook ) "No path as narrow; no road taken straight." In this novel, beautifully written in the first person throughout, the reader experiences the often lonely and confusing and sometimes downright terrifying, period of days in the life of Lilian Dove, now resident of Freitown, where she has inherited and runs a small discount liquor store.
For her this in itself is a major achievement. Until five years ago she was an alcoholic, like her father before her. Her mother, still living, has always been spitefully hateful towards her and just seems to keep getting worse. Her best, possible only, real friend had died, deemed a suicide (though Lilian has suspicions that the live in boy friend killed her) many months before. But at last it was beginning to get right, she had a life. Until the blackmail call threatening to show evidence that she had murdered her best friend: video from a nanny-cam on a flash drive. She knows the caller, goes to tell him what she thinks of him - and her newly won life starts to explore.
The characterisation of Lilian is very well done, helped also by the narration of Reagan Boggs, who takes on the persona of the young woman, still fighting past demons and struggling with the present chaos entering her life. She's confused, afraid and lonely but also feisty and won't give in. A likable and very real person. Ms.Boggs conveys all of this admirably, without hystrionics, reading clear and sustained with good intonation. She also interprets the other character voices distinctly. A nice performance which very much adds to the overall enjoyment of the book.
This is a well constructed book, filling in background information about the main protagonist through Lilian's remembrances at appropriate points of the story. The tale is one to keep the reader guessing: what is going on? Why is she being targeted? And with some nice little twists along the way. It always feels exciting, frightening and plausible.
My thanks to the rights holder who freely gifted me a complimentary copy of Suppose, at my request, via Audiobook Boom. This was my first encounter with Lilian Dove and her author, J.D.Adamson and I certainly hope that it will not be my last.
I received a free copy of this book for an honest review.
I was happy to review Suppose because I'd read the first Lillian Dove mystery, Admit to Mayhem, and really liked it. D.J. Adamson's writing flows well and her books are a quick read. I also enjoy her sense of humor.
Lillian lives in a small town and has inherited a house and liquor store from a man she'd worked for. It's ironic that she owns a liquor store since she's an alcoholic but she's handling it well. When an old acquaintance calls and threatens her, she knows that it's just a con but she still feels the need to check it out. With the single decision to confront Kenny, Lillian ends up in the middle of a mess.
Suppose has some twists, some suspense, and some humor on top of a murder mystery. Lillian also has some interesting relationships. Her mother is verbally abusive but Lillian still feels the need to check on her daily. Lillian and the detective she ends up working with don't seem to like each other but I wonder what the future will bring with those two.
If you like a mystery with some twists and a bit of humor, I definitely recommend Suppose. Even though it's the second book in a series, it does stand on its own.
Here comes trouble. What a combination of mystery, suspense and an inside look of yourself. There are times that you'll find your self laughing and on the verge of laughter. Lillian Dove is out to make herself free of a murder. But, first she must set aside the story that she can't be trusted, that she is an alcoholic on the road to recovery. The story is fast paced and will grab your attention as you follow Lillian through a web of twists and turns. The author leaves you never knowing what will happen on the next page. At times you'll be tense, at others, almost laughing. Not every author can combine these together. Ms. Adamson places her characters in a small town setting and the way life is in Frytown. You can picture the scenery and Lillian is like someone you know. As you turn the pages you may find yourself on the edge of your seat What would you do if you were under suspicion for a crime you didn't commit? Would you do a fast getaway or would you stay and fight? The author will take you on a ride and you won't want to get off, at least not until you finish the book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and PUYB in exchange for my unbiased book review.
NO SPOILERS I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well-formed and the action pulled you from one page to the next. I spent a relaxing day reading the whole thing.
"Suppose" is a good book to read. Some books start with different plots and leave some questions unanswered. Suppose answered all questions. I enjoyed reading this book.
