This book starts off with a long introduction explaining how humans and aliens collided. Blah, blah blah, long story short some monoliths that were left on Earth start opening up and attacking.

Captain Raaker is brought in to discover why only one monolith didn't shed into non-bio AIs. His little daughter Zoe begs him to come home, but he tells her that he can't.

I honestly have no idea where Haarsma is going with this but it sounds intriguing.

The book is dominated by primary colors and black. The art is pleasing to me if a little dark and Blade-Runner-y.

Picked this up because I supported and watched all of Con Man. I assume this issue #0 is a lead up to a full-fledged series that tells the story of what happened on the show within the web series?

It's a little interesting, especially the first page blurb about human-alien interactions before the story. I'm a little curious what those monoliths are or how the Spectrum crew meet up. But it feels a little too heavy for me to actually start reading. Doubt I'll go any further than this #FCBD issue.

Spectrum #0 brings to life the plot of a fictionalized show within a fictionalized show that circles tantalizingly around the very real fan obsession with a too-soon-cancelled actual cult TV favorite and its intrepid cast and characters.

Confused? Stay with me now, and I’ll do my best to explain.

A solid start to a clever scifi story, not sure where it's headed but it's looking like a great ride.

Interesting comic which sets up the firefly-like universe of ConMan's fictional universe. Too bad that the story doesn't seem to progress past issue 1 (maybe do a spin-off? ;-) )

As far as opening issues go, this was definitely a good one. There's a lot that's sort of left up in the air as far as explanations go in spite of the fact that there's a large exposition dump before the comic even starts (about a page of text's worth). This is pretty much the only reason I held back from giving it a perfect score as the rest of the issue was fantastic. Readers are introduced to (former) Captain Raaker a man who immediately comes off as a man with a troubled past. He's gruff but not a total jerk and has a rather somber air about him that seems decidedly similar to Mal, from FIREFLY. About halfway through, a young woman named Ketheria is introduced. She's also referred to as the Scion and appears to have supernatural abilities of some kind though they are not overly defined as of yet. She's a pretty cool character, a real serene sort, but not much about her personality is revealed other than how she's determined to stop a dark force that looms in the distance.

The story tosses readers right into a futuristic Earth as it is being invaded by large insectoid robots who've sprung forth from monoliths left by an alien civilization. No one knows what they want or exactly how to stop them before they cause irreparable damage. Raaker is roped into becoming captain of a ship called The Spectrum while Ketheria is being hunted by a group of unfriendly aliens on another world. All of this action is accompanied by some really stunning artwork. It's got a charming, stylized look to it that manages to capture an insane amount of detail despite it's cartoony veneer. One of the things I love the most about it is how stunning the lighting effects are. The lettering also looks quite nice which is something I have to say I rarely even make note of.

In short, it was just a lot of fun and it's clear that the series has a lot of potential.

So the premise of this comic sounds interesting. There is a really long introduction explaining about what has happened in the past leading up to the current story. It’s literally a full page of text on the inside of the cover.

It’s pretty short once it gets going. Basically Captain Raaker is contacted to go investigate way only one of the monolith didn’t open and let out aliens. The reader is shown that he has a daughter who misses him and wants him to come home but he can’t. The world needs him now.

Then it switches to showing this strange young girl appears and tells Raaker to find her. You have no idea who she is. Apparently she has a pretty cool power to either kill people or bend them to her will. She is called the Scion, though we have no idea what that means. We just know that bad guys want to find her – probably to use her powers for bad.

That’s basically where it ends. I have no idea what the connection to Raaker will be. It seems like a little too short of a glimpse in this world. I feel like I got a taste, but I’m just not sure I got hooked enough to pick up the series. It sounds interesting, but it just didn’t quite grab me. Perhaps if I had gotten just a little bit more to get attached to either character, I would maybe pick up the series.

Something that was interesting to me though was that Alan Tudyk is part of the creative team... when I have nothing else to read, perhaps this would be worth picking up.

Nothing really happens, long introductions of things... kinda seems like they're starting in the wrong places if this is how they want to draw people into it. If you've watched Con Man and you'll like what they do anyway, this isn't really needed because you'll keep reading anyway. If you just picked this up out of no where and it COULD be the thing that draws you into everything else, then it would be a poor introduction.

They should have started with a fun reason of why we'll love the characters, and left this as the start of a full comic a bit later on.

This was a rather short but really tantalizing intro to the world of the Spectrum TV show that was woven throughout Con Man. I really appreciated the detail map of the ship. I just hope that the comic is able to infuse a little more of the humor that was in the series. Also Spectrum books coming soon too!?! Damn, I am so glad I helped fun Con Man. Also I have awesome friends who picked this up for me because I couldn't go to Free Comic Book Day.
