Like A Comet

Rate this book
The Indestructibles: Jane, the solar-powered girl; Kate, the ballerina vigilante; Billy, who shares his brain with a cosmic-powered symbiotic alien; Titus, a werewolf with confidence issues; and Entropy Emily, a Whovian with a black hole where her heart should be — together with their mentor, the magician Doc Silence — have saved the world from a sentient hurricane and a living plague. They've even traveled through time to rescue an alternate timeline.

But now they face their greatest challenge yet: a messenger from the stars, a creature with powers just like Billy's, has crash-landed on Earth with a warning of a pending alien invasion. The young heroes must rally their forces and turn their attention to the stars.

It's all hands on deck as the Nemesis Fleet, an armada of living ships and ancient, parasitic, mind-controlling creatures, speeds toward Earth like a hive of locusts. Enemies become allies and friendships are challenged as the Indestructibles try to pull out every trick in their arsenal to save the planet.

Like a Comet is where the Indestructibles stop being students and start to become the heroes they were destined to be. But will they be strong enough?

The fourth book in the Indestructible super hero series and a book that I absolutely loved. I would have given it four stars, which I consider a very high rating, if not for a lot of writing errors in the last few chapters. That said, even with the writing errors, this book was amazing to me. It could be that I've traveled with these heroes for so long now....nearly 2000 pages, I think....and they've grown on me more and more, so I'm biased, but it was wonderful. So, to get down to it, the Indestrutible universe is a story about super heroes doing super hero things. While the characters are similar to common archetypes, the author does some wonderful twisting of the archetypes to come up with things that are unique and wonderful...s.a. Jane, aka Solar, powered by the sun thanks to her Gwayne gene, she is as of earth as superman is not, though she was raised in a similar loving farm family. She is not also a mild mannered reporter, but continuely asked out by a mild mannered reporter. Her powers, whil similar to super mans, also combine a bit of phonix fire power, which seems like a wonderful twist to me. Or Dancer...batman if he were a dancer obsessed with making herself and her world better...or my personal favorite, Valerie Snow, aka Valkyre, a girl who was combined with a living storm....her powers may seem similar to Storms, but she has the interesting duality of being a sweat hearted girl combined with the dark fury of a hurricane, shy and powerful beyond belief. All wonderful, as are all the characters. Anywho, this book, the last one up to present, as far as I can tell, other than some short stories, finds the incredibles fighting off an alien invasion. Loving the ride so far, hope the ride keeps going. Now...take grains of salt with my critiscm, but towards the end some of the righting seemed a bit off. I think either the writer was trying to reach a goal release date or just excited about finishing the work. We find the narrative whirling from one point of view to the next, which can be difficult to maintain, and unless I'm mistaken, that difficulty showed as some of the dialogue going from one character to the next didn't seem to match up quite right. Also, we are reminded early on that only the demi-god character can speak in space as a creature of magic...and that Jane has lost her ear bug and can't speak to the others due to that...but then she goes ahead and has a conversation with billy anyway? maybe I was confused, but there were a few minor logistic errors like that. no matter though, a few errors a good reader can overlook, and this work was masterful and enjoyable.

Wow! Just Wow! This series just keeps getting better, All our favorite characters, some old favorites abd some new additions. All the comments I have made for previous books in the series apply to this one. Also it is great to see more of Valerie and Bedlam.
One slight thing do not get into pairing people off, it always spoils the superhero books and detracts from the story (that said, you have to ship Valerie and Solar, just saying)
This would definitely be high in the list of top ten superhero series of all time.
Recommendation - a must read.

Great addition to the Indestructibles story! This one is set in space and really centers around one epic final battle against an alien invasion. This makes it a little slow to get going but man, once it does it really delivers. I would still put Book 3 Entropy of Everything as my favorite in the series but this one was really cool. This one also introduces a lot of new characters and brings a few familiar faces back that haven't been seen in awhile. Fun read.
