Long Lake Legacy #1

The Old River Road

Rate this book
1885

When seventeen-year-old Clara Boutwell married her dashing coworker, William McDonald, she was convinced her life was near perfect. The journey before them as newlyweds in the great city of Chicago was promising and exciting. But a frightening disease soon takes William in its grip, forcing them to the clean air of the western frontier in a desperate attempt to save his life. But pioneering doesn’t prove to be easy, with miles between neighbors instead of fences. On the eastern Washington prairies, the McDonalds face hardships and trials in a new world where everything is tested, from physical endurance to emotional strength—down to their relationship and faith in the Lord.

This novel tells the incredible true story of Clara and William, the great-great grandparents of the author, in a sweet narrative full of laughter, tears, and the struggles of an early pioneering family. Prepare yourself to share in their experience as you read this account of a pioneer family in Washington state, and see their lasting legacy that has endured into the fifth generation.

Ahhhh, I just love this book so much!!! :D Seeing as how I read an e-ARC I will certainly be buying a hard copy as soon as possible. :)

I feel like I should start this review by commenting on the whimsical beauty of this book. Because it truly is a beautiful story. <3 I have seen in other reviews where it was mentioned that the book had a Laura Ingalls Wilder or Janette Oke feel, and I agree. Though The Old River Road isn't third-person (as are the Little House books) and doesn't have multiple POVs (as do many of Janette Oke's books) it does have the feel of older literature. Which I absolutely loved. ^_^

I was super thrilled to realize this book is based on the true story of the author's great-great-grandparents – making the story all the more real to me. Clara and William were such a sweet couple!! I loved reading their story – through their courtship, marriage, and a life of trials and triumphs. So sweet and heartwarming.

It was simple and sweet (sometimes funny!), never heart-pounding or suspenseful, yet I found myself having a hard time putting it down. A beautiful story of love. Not a romance-y, kisses and butterflies story, but a story of deep, beautiful love that lasts when other things may fail.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I can't recommend it enough. I look forward to reading more by this talented young author. :)

Quotes.

“Your hand is shaking.” ... "That always happens when I’m nervous.” “Are you nervous now?” “No, just excited, but my hands don’t know the difference.”

“A man can’t even kiss his own wife in this blasted city without being gawked at.”

Or maybe, it was because she was gaining a deeper understanding that how no matter how difficult life got, no matter how hopeless it appeared, God always had a reason bigger than anything she could imagine.

Was there anything I didn't like about this book?

No. There was not. :)

Ivy Rose has created a beautiful piece of art in The Old River Road. It’s beautiful in almost every aspect it could be. I love this time period the story is set in, so that it made it even better for me, but I think even those who don’t prefer historical fiction can still find the charm in this book.

I also thought it was incredibly awesome that it was based on true events.

Such a clever way of retelling a history in form of fiction! The characters were incredible; I absolutely adored all of them and their interactions were true to life and full of authenticity. The whole story rings themes of love and family, and the writing style displayed so much talent; it was easily better than most adult writers I’ve read of this similiar genre.

While there was really no strong plot or suspense, this kind of story doesn’t need that. It was solely the characters that drove me forward, and I found more than enough enjoyment and happiness just following their lives. I kept reading for these characters, not for what was happening. In fact, I was so disappointed when it finished—I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to them! They feel like good friends now.

This book was completely clean and full of sweet and adorable romance. Every interaction, every emotion, every event drew me closer and closer into the story and to the characters.

I loved this book from the first word to the last and I am now super sad that it’s over because I want to see Clara and William and Archie and everyone again. And of course the fact it’s based on true events makes it all so much awesomer. I think it’s such an awesome idea from the author’s point to write a novel like this in the form of historical fiction, and though I obviously do not have the documents she pulled from, I would estimate from having read it that she stuck very true to the original.

No cons significant enough to mention. I loved everything about this book and loved the characters to pieces. They had me laughing, smiling, and crying. I can’t wait for the next installment! (Please tell me there is another!??!)

This book... just <3.

Full/updated review:

Oh, where to begin? First off, I loved THE OLD RIVER ROAD, and secondly, it's one of my new favourite books.

Though the first few chapters were good, the story got even better, and soon, I was hooked. I wanted to know more about Clara, William, and the members of their family. It was a wonderful sort of story: the kind with no particular plot, but in a lovely way -- a way that bases your desire to continue reading on the lives of the characters rather than the story itself.

And the writing was excellent, too. Ivy did a great job of keeping the writing simple, yet she still allowed it to carry with a strong sense of elegance.

So it was amazing. Go read it... Now.

You may want to know: There is minor kissing, a brief scene with a drunkard, and the mentioning of death due to illness.

This was one of those nice, cozy, sweet, charming reads. In a way, it made me think of Laura Ingalls Wilder. I would recommend it for those days when you just want a good read. Nothing too deep and thought-provoking but gentle and ... yeah, just sweet. A lot of events happened as William and Clara met, courted, married, and went through trials and difficulties, but daily life was kind of skimmed. Which set the tone for the relaxed read, not deep-in-thought.

The main "disclaimer" I'd put is that William was the perfect husband -- he was always patient and understanding. And, actually, now that I think about it, Clara's faults were never depicted either. They were pretty much the perfect couple who had trials and such come their way. Usually "perfection" turns me off, but I don't know. It was just truly and honestly sweet. Maybe I was just in the mood for an easy, relaxing read.

There definitely was romance in it, as it started when William and Clara met. Nothing too deep was mentioned though. They had feelings for each other, kissed and hugged, etc., but nothing that made me feel uncomfortable.

Honest, this was one of the best books I've read by a teenage author. I look forward to more!

I really really enjoyed this book! I love historical fiction, especially set in the 1800s, so this was right up my alley! I finished it in about 2 days time, and cannot wait for book 2! What made this book even cooler in my mind, was that it was actually about the author's relatives. (great-grandmother, maybe?)

My one and only critique is that the characters didn't have a lot of depth. I took me a little bit to really get into the story, and even so, they just weren't very well-rounded.

But otherwise, I loved it! I loved the sweet, innocent romance, the close family ties, and the old West! A great read for anyone! Kudos Ivy Rose!

I have long been looking forward to reading this book, probably ever since I saw its gorgeous cover. And, I must say, it’s completely been worth the waiting and definitely exceeded my expectations.

Opening this book was like loosing track of time sprawled out in an attic, thumbing through old journals and black and white photo albums, completely absorbed in the life of some long-forgotten relative. Time travel does exist, in the form of books, and Ivy Rose created a beautiful journey for the reader into the lives of her great great grandparents— a tale rich in faith, love, hardships, and joys.
Super sweet and charming and full of beautiful historical detail!

This was a very sweet book. I must admit going into it I was expecting more of a normal novel outlined book, but it ended up being more of just the story of Clara's life. Don't get me wrong, I liked the layout, It just threw me off so I wasn't expecting it. I ended up really enjoying the free style and lack of super firm plot.

Clara is just an ordinary girl, much like a lot of us. When the story begins she is seventeen and the youngest of a lot of girls, which I loved because I can really relate to that. The story follows her through her education, marriage, and a lot of her motherhood. Every circumstance felt very real (which makes since when you learn it was based on true events) and it made the story very enduring.

I really enjoyed that this author did not avoid mentioning things that are just part of normal motherhood that most people skip over but did not feel the need to go into a ton of detail. But for that reason, some younger kids (about 7-12, and espechilly ones who do not have a lot of younger siblings) might find parts of this book a bit uncomfortable. But for anyone a little older, or who is just perfectly used to stuff like that, this book is fantastic.

Overall this book was a very nice, refreshing read. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

I've been wanting to read this book since I first heard it was being written. I wasn't disappointed. Well written, engaging, sweet, heartbreaking–it was all there. I had to wipe tears away so I could keep reading. (I don't usually cry when I read a book.) Knowing that this story is based on the events of real people made the story even better. You could tell the author has seen many of the places in this book for the descriptions weren't vague as so often happens. My only complaint was that book 2 isn't out, and I have to wait to find out what happens next to Clara and Will.

This is definitely a book I will be rereading and recommending to others.

Well, I highly enjoyed this book!

As someone who lives in the area described in Washington in the latter part of the novel, I enjoyed reading about my homeland in the eyes of the McDonalds. The book was very believable and had such a realistic picture painted of what life on the frontier of Washington would be like. The characters were lovable and the story encouraging--- no matter how hard things got, the McDonalds always chose to praise the Lord through the trials and the blessings.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a nonfiction frontier story, and even if that's not your style, I still would say read it! It was a blessing to me to read this during some of my own trials, and know that we never walk the road of hardship alone, but with Christ, also.

Those who are listed on Homeschooled Authors.com are my people. Anytime I am not sure what to read, I grab one of their books from my kindle or shelf. I picked this one from the list on my Kindle books, wanting something I knew wouldn’t be filled with things I might regret reading.

Remember those old book series or movies that were popular before we were born but our parents had us watch? …the ones that gave the story of most of a person’s life from very young until they were old and gray? This book reminded me of those series/movies. It takes Clara from when she is seventeen and living in the city until she is in her thirties and living out west. Unlike most books today, there isn’t a climax in this book, no one huge struggle. I think that the book suffered some for that.

Clara was a very realistic character. Perhaps that is because she really was, as this is all based on the great-great-grandparents of the author. You get the full sweep of her early life within the pages. Her romance was sweet and gentle, she is close to her family, and her faith is important to her.

The pace of the story is gentle, steady, and lifelike. It isn’t slow, but it isn’t in a hurry either. I found it relaxing. If you want a lot of action, or cannot stand a story without a climax, this book is not for you. If you are into older, nostalgic reads, this book is perfect.

I recommend this book to those who love historical fiction, books based on real people, and nostalgic feeling stories.

This is a sweet, lovely, simple story that takes place back in the 1800s. I was privileged to be a beta reader for this wonderful story, and I absolutely loved it!
The depth of the characters was amazing! I felt like I got to know each and every one personally. The fact that this was based on a true story made it all the more enchanting! These things really happened. These people lived. I loved that! Ivy has done a great job bringing their story to life.
Also, I loved the faith that is woven throughout the book. It's never preachy, it's just such a part of their lives that it can't help but shine through. The characters aren't perfect, they go through struggles and hardships, but they rely on the Lord as their strength.
And the romance is also so sweet! Since I had never read anything by the author before, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I shouldn't have worried! It was very God-honoring and just overall so sweet! ^_^
So yes, the whole book is just so beautiful! I'd recommend it to anyone and everyone who enjoys reading about the 1800s era. :)

I started this book this morning, and I finished it an hour or two ago. I was pleased, although it wasn't what I was expecting. To be honest, I didn't read the summary all that thoroughly ... or I totally forgot reading it from when I originally added it to my to-read list to when I bought it. Anyway, I was glad I read it, and I consider the couple hours I spent holed up in my bedroom well-spent.

A very sweet story that, I've heard, is based strongly in nonfiction, The Old River Road is definitely worth the read for lovers of historical fiction, adventure, drama, pioneers, faith, and family. There are a few things that took away the one star which I will discuss in a more detailed review to-be-posted on my blog.

This book reminded me of a cross between Laura Ingalls Wilder, Maud Hart Lovelace, and Gene Stratton Porter. Those being some of my favorite authors, this book was great for me!

I was honored to be able to critique this novel. For Ivy's first publication, she has woven a simultaneously heart-warming and heart-wrenching story. My love for the trials and triumphs of this story are only increased by the fact that it is a true story. The author does a tremendous job of conveying the era and the relationship between husband and wife, and her research is evident. I'm not sure I've ever laughed and cried so much while trying to pay enough attention to the mechanics of a book to give feedback. If I ever attempt to document my family's history, I hope to do half as well as Ivy Rose.

"Your hands are shaking."
"That always happens when I'm nervous."
"Are you nervous now?"
"No, just excited, but my hands don't know the difference."

I spent most of this book reading it through the tears in my eyes. Both sad ones and happy ones. Because wow, this was an emotional rollercoaster.
Clara and William's story was one I wanted to stay in forever. It was so comfortable, like just listening to someone tell their life story (which it was, in a way, I suppose). It felt familiar, kind of reminiscent of Little House or Anne of Green Gables, just a sweet story with God's fingerprints all over it.
I loved Clara and William. They reminded me of some of the senior adult couples I love at church, with crazy incredible stories that seem so far-fetched that they have to be true. I hadn't really read the synopsis before I dove in, just knowing it was about Hailey's family and not really needing much else to be intrigued. So when I found a beautiful story about love, family, and God's faithfulness... I was very pleased. But seriously, Clara and William are couple goals and the cutest and I love them. And so are their kids.
Overall, I just kept watching the percentage number at the bottom of the page get closer to 100 and felt sad every time I noticed. I never wanted it to end. So yes, I highly recommend it if you're a fan of historical fiction, cute couples that turn into adorable families, and stories that make you feel all the things.

4.5 stars from me.

I very much enjoyed this historically-based story of the author’s ancestors. What an excellent job the author did setting the scene and making the characters and events feel real, bringing yesteryear into reality for today’s readers. While the plot was simple and merely followed the character’s life, it was engaging. The history was well portrayed for the most part and painted a vivid picture.
I read a first edition paperback and there were some minor typos/copyediting errors which hopefully disappeared in the most recent edition. I also found the book to end very abruptly. Can’t wait to read book 2!

I loved this book so much! The story, the characters, everything! It was a very moving and heartfelt read! I was a little surprised to see that the book took place over many years, so it was a bit fast moving time wise since large amounts of time passed throughout the chapters. But I loved this sweet story of faith, courage, hardships, and family bonds! The Old River Road gets a five solid stars from me and I highly recommend this book!!!

I was drawn to this book before I read it as I love stories that delve into family history. This made the book even more real, and it was fun to figure out what might be fact and what might be fiction :)

William and Clara unfortunate bump into each other on the street leads to a romance that will forever change their life. While, the book is focused on them getting together and starting a family, it isn't a heavy romance book. I found it natural and sweet.

My favorite part of this book was probably the last half. I loved as they traveled west and found a whole new life waiting for them. There is a lot of time period covered and lots of characters to meet which sometimes makes it slightly confusing, but not extremely so. The end leaves you wanting to read more :) I loved when the Indians came to visit!

There wasn't anything majorely wrong with this book. I enjoyed reading it, but it is a simple story. Don't expect a sitting-on-the-edge-of-your-seat type of story. You will find a story that has Christian lessons, godly romance, and a family striving to find a place to settle.

A sweet story, this book is full of family interactions and humor, along with the real struggles of 19th century life...especially when moving out to the frontier is involved. Suspense keeps the reader engaged with Clara as she struggles through new experiences, some painful, some laughable. And, in it all, it is Clara's faith which keeps her strong. This is a perfect story for anyone who loves historical fiction, coupled with Christian romance and a strong (but not preachy) faith.

If you like historical fiction, or think you'd enjoy a 'Little House' series at a later time period with older characters, this is the book to read.

This book was exceptionally sweet and one that I completely and thoroughly enjoyed reading. The characters were very endearing and I quickly became attached to them. And, to think that this book told the true story of this author's great-great-grandparents...so cool! I loved William and Clara and to know that they were real people added a very neat aspect to the story and made me enjoy it even more.

What I Liked: This story had a very easy pace, yet the events, circumstances, trials, and adventures of Clara and her family kept me turning the pages and cheering in their victories and mourning with them in their losses. William and Clara were so very sweet to each other. That's how a marriage should be. I know marriage is not all fun and easy, but I just simply enjoyed reading of William and Clara's sweet love story and marriage relationship.

This book was also very clean and that was so refreshing. I enjoy reading sweet stories that glorify God with some adventure mixed in and that's what this author did very well in this story. She kind of left me hanging at the end of this book and I can't wait to find out what happens next to the McDonald family as they live along the river in rural Washington State. I will definitely be purchasing the next book.

What I Didn't Like: I don't believe that there was anything that really bothered me in this book. It was a very good read and definitely worth my time.

I give this book 5 stars for a delightful story depicting the grace, love, and mercy God has for us portrayed excellently through the lives of the characters in this book.

Ooh, joins review team for the author's renamed TORR and forgets about it . . . reviews on the last date possible, so so so horrible of me, I know! But I LOVE the book, enough said? No? Yes? Find my review here soon, or I'm grounding myself from reading for a week.

My REAL review:

Genre: Historical, western, (somewhat non-fiction), fiction, and romance.

My Rating: 5 stars, this is WONDERFUL!!!

My Recommendation: 13/16 up because of something that the main characters go through, message me for more info if you feel the need but it's not something bad, just sad/hard.

My Thoughts: OH MY GOODNESS!!! This book was so wonderful! I love it, the fact that most of this happened is so neat and the story is so good, you need to read this book! Reading about a young girl who fell in love and married and as the couple lived through hardships, joyful accomplishments, sorrows, grief, and hope are all shared in the pages of this wonderful fictionalized account of the author's great great grandparents.

I've loved reading about the time period TORR is set during, this was no exception of other books I enjoyed like this one. I've had it on my TBR list for a good while and when Hailey Rose asked on some social media for reviewers I was so excited and signed up instantly - I'm so happy I did, a perfect summer or anytime read!

I received this book in exchange for my honest review and m truly happy to provide it.

Wow! What a great book! Ivy Rose has a wonderful way of transforming the reader to the life of Clara and her family. I loved it so much!

The writing style is amazing. Ivy did a great job of bring out the details and letting the reader see it all unfold. The story is so beautiful and the fact that it is a real life happening makes my heart sing with delight. I can hardly wait for the next book.

The first half of the book was so lovely with Clara and William's romance unfolding and the second half was filled with action. The story of how the family moved out west. I will tell you though, it's not all fun and games. There are meaningful and very sad scenes. It will pull at your heart.

You won't regret reading The Old River Road.

Oh goodness...where to start?
The Old River Road was one of the best historical fictions I've ever read.
What makes it better is that it's a true story about real people!
I loved this book. I both laughed, and cried. (And crying is something I do NOT do. Ever.)
Ivy Rose is a truly amazing author. I'm excited for the second book to be finished and published.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in historical fiction. Fantastic!
One last thing; I want to rave a little about the cover. It. Is. SO. Gorgeous! The colors, the font, everything is so beautifully done!
This book well deserves 5 shiny gold stars. <3

I don't read a lot of historicals these days, my taste tends more towards fantasy generally, But as soon as I read that this book was a true story I was interested. I adore true stories, and particularly enjoy, one from the pioneer period.

The Old River Road (my mind keeps trying to type Rose, instead of Road) is a sweet story. Not the most engaging or exciting book, but a relaxing book for those day you just want something quiet.

The story paints a clear picture of a life in Chicago and later out on the frontier. Life is not always easy but it is generally happy.

Clara and William were a lovely couple, and I loved their families. So many books leave out anyone who isn't necessary to the plot, or make sure characters bring more conflict or tension. This was a loving, peaceful family, a great example.

On the writing quality side, there is some room for improvement, which is to be expected from a debut book. Ivy leans a bit much towards telling and summarization on a few occasions and the writing doesn't have the sparkling wittiness or immediacy that draws me to some personal accounts. This might just be personal style though. The characters feel real, but for the most part are not distinctive.

Summing it up, this is a lovely book, much better than anything I have produced myself so far, and I look forward to Ivy continuing the series.

Missed this book the first time around, but I'm glad I caught it on the re-release. ;)

I think one of the most interesting things about this story for me was knowing that it was based on the memoirs of the author's real-life ancestors. I think I approached it more as a memoir-type story than a fiction book, and that helped in places, since I wasn't expecting as much of a connected plot, etc. I also liked the list of fictional/historical characters and the afterword at the end detailing some of the real events behind the story.

The pacing was a bit uneven--it seemed like not much happened for a long time at the beginning, and then all sorts of things happened on top of each other at the end--but again, some of that was probably a result of the real-life timeline. The only other thing that threw me a bit was that some of the word and phrasing choices felt more modern than historical. But I loved all the sweet characters and the way everyone pitched in to help at different times--family, friends, and random neighbors. William was an absolute dear, and I admired Clara's spunk, especially with everything she went through. And the kids were adorable! I would definitely read more in this series. :)

3.5 stars

I received a free copy of this book from the author. A positive review was not required. All opinions are my own.

Content--mentions of blood, wounds, and vomiting (not graphic); some scenes including childbirth and nursing (not graphic); deaths

4.5 stars & 5/10 hearts. This book... it made me tear up so often, even if I’ve read it several times. The emotions are so vividly portrayed. So many difficult trials this woman had... and yet, you can see the Lord’s help through them all. And William was a darling. <3 The language is a bit too modern, but the settings are so well described I can see them all in my head. And all the many characters fit in just right. Truly a lovely book, inside and out. Due to the fact that it chronicles the life of a wife & mother, I recommend it for girls 16+. There is nothing inappropriate in the romance (except a couple forehead/cheek kisses & hugs before marriage), and the birthing/nursing scenes are hardly detailed; but in my opinion children younger than that don’t need to focus on those subjects. :) I don’t think I’d hand it to a boy, but then I don’t think a boy would care for it, either. ;) The paperback is worth every penny... it’s SO gorgeous!!!

A Favourite Quote: “Her eyes trailed upwards, where the setting sun cast stunning shades of pink, purple, and orange over the snow below. She gasped softly, wondering where such lovely colors came from. Jesus painting. (...) Even in the busy city, God’s presence was so near.”
A Favourite Beautiful Quote: “The overcast sky made the water sheen a stunning grey. It sparkled like crystal as the slight breeze made ripples on the surface.”
A Favourite Humorous Quote: “‘William? ... You aren’t excited?’ Her voice sounded pitiful even to her. ... William stirred out of his reprieve and straightened.
“‘Excited? Oh yes. Very much.’
“Clara wasn’t at all convinced.”
