The Judge and Jake

Rate this book
Judge Cate Rasmussen is on a personal mission to recover her brother’s body from a crash site deep in the South American jungle. A farm girl who has climbed up the professional ladder, her orderly life has left little room for any man, except the younger brother she’s protected his whole life. Finding him and burying him is her last act of sisterly devotion. She won’t let anyone or anything get in her way—certainly not the disreputable-looking guide she’s hired, even though he pushes all of her buttons—the good and the bad.

Jake Decker is an ex-pat American and former army ranger, making a living as a guide for academics. He’s alone in the world and determined to stay that way. His chosen profession doesn’t require emotional commitment or long-term responsibility, but he realizes from the start that taking on Cate will be a different matter. She’s independent, unpredictable, and has the guts of a warrior. Despite his better judgment, he finds her admirable, and worse, hotter than the steamy jungle they’re trekking through.

As Cate and Jake make their journey, they begin to realize there might be more to her brother’s death than they know. They must fight their way past thieves, murderers and their growing attraction to each other. Cate’s determined to find her brother and learn the truth, and with Jake sticking by her side, they’re unstoppable.

A CAPTIVATING AND ENTERTAINING ADVENTURE

This was a funny and highly entertaining adventure. Totally unexpected. Two strangers come together as a female Judge has hired this man as a guide for a rescue in a jungle. She is bound to find a downed plane and recover her brothers body. The adventure begins as these two immediately realize their attractions and the difficulty of making this journey. Surprises arise as she managed to impress this guide, ex military man, with inventive skills for self protection. This adventure includes ongoing action, threats from criminals and many surprises as this story comes to a close.

Primitive romance and adventure

Judge Cate Rasmussen is on a personal mission to recover her younger brother Ben’s body from a plane crash site deep in the South American jungle. Cate was raised on a farm and has taken body building lessons so she is not the fragile, helpless female you would expect. After inquiring for a good guide to take her, she hires Jake Decker, an ex-pat American and former Ranger, making a living as a guide for academics. He likes his role because it doesn’t require emotional commitment or long-term responsibility. He also is over six feet tall, his arms and legs bulge with muscles, and every time Cate views him when he is wearing only shorts because of the humidity of the rain forest, she emotionally responds, although she tries to hide it. She was engaged once, but it didn’t last and no man since then has attracted her until now. When he first meets her and she hires him, he recognizes that Cate is independent, unpredictable, and fearless.
Before they leave to enter the rain forest, Cate catches a young local man in her hotel room tearing it apart, looking for something. He jumps out the window when she enters and she follows him, also out the window. She is not going to let anyone take advantage of her. She chases him til she catches him, they wrestle but his masculinity gives him more strength and he leaves her lying in the dirt. Jake sees all of this as he rescues Cate and leads her back to her hotel room.
Jakes recognizes that there is something suspicious about the plane wreck, regardless of what Cate has been told. He also feels it is ridiculous to try and get a body that after two weeks is now decaying and being eaten my maggots, even though it is only her intention to make sure he is buried properly. Jake can also speak Spanish and some of the native tongues, which Cate can’t. However, Cate does know how to handle a gun, which often comes in handy as the story progresses.
This is a fascinating plot. It goes from one dangerous attempt on their lives to another, and Jake, although wishes to be the protector of Cate, finds that often she is standing side by side in defense of their lives. Although they each are trapped in a sexual desire for the other and resist it, this often takes over their lives and there are some passionate love making scenes. It isn’t often you now find a plot where the woman is not weak and helpless and the men are sort of spineless. Cate and Jake have been characterized as the epitome of male and female beings.
This book was a page turner for me. I loved every minute of it and I heartily recommend it to readers who like rugged adventures and romances. I was given a complimentary copy for an honest review.

The Judge and Jake Reminds You of Romancing The Stone and is Fantastic

**I received a copy of the book from NK Author Services and Ebooks Galore in exchange for an honest review**

This is a fantastic book and you'll find it will remind you of two of my favorite movies, Romancing the Stone and The African Queen. Judge Cate Rasmussen is a strong willed and won't take No for an answer, you'll fall in love with her almost immediately. But it's Jake Decker, an ex-Army Ranger who leads scientists into the jungle, that she convinces him to take her to the crash site because she'll go without him. They both have a battle of wills on their way in the rain forest.

Cate Rasmussen has climbed up from a small town farm girl from Pennsylvania to her current job as a judge. But when she finds out that her little brother, Ben, has died in a plane crash and the company he's working for won't retrieve the body for burial. So she sets out to find him and make sure his body gets a proper burial. She finds Jake in a local bar and enlists him to take her into the rain forest. But when a thief breaks into her hotel room that both Cate and Jake think that the crash may have been caused by something else than engine trouble.

Jake is impressed with Cate's stamina and willingness to work hard to find her brother but when they arrive at the crash they discover one less body and drugs. They set out to find Ben and safely return to the USA with him alive. There are crooked police, drug lords, and of course Pilar who wants to keep Ben alive for her personal needs. When it comes time for Cate and Ben to return home, she hopes that Jake may come with her but will he? You'll have to read the book to find out if he does or stays in the rain forest.

This is Shaye Harting's first book and I hope there will be many more because I will be first to read them. Hopefully one will be Ben's story (hint, hint!)

Action-packed adventure from beginning to end!

Judge Cate Rasmussen has strong ties to her younger brother Ben. She has always been there for him and though he is now an adult and an employed engineer inspecting sites in various countries she still feels responsible for him. When she learns that he has died in a plane crash in the rainforest she sets off to find his remains and bury them to provide closure for herself and her parents.

Not being an expert in rainforest survival or finding places based on geographic coordinates she sets out to find the best guide possible to lead her to her brother’s remains and help her bury him. Who does she hire? Jake Decker – expat, ex-army-ranger, guide extraordinaire.

From the moment they meet they are attracted to one another but their attraction will have to weather some hairy and rather horrific experiences before the end of the book.

I loved Cate – not a shrinking violet and definitely able to take care of herself…and others. I loved Jake’s lethal and tender sides – what a hunk! Ben was a character that might be deserving of his own story in the future. He was a survivor with grit and determination that saw him through to the end.

If you are looking for a jungle adventure with bad guys, good guys, escapes, gun battles, romance and more then this book has it all…and more…and I would like to recommend to you!

The Judge and Jake is the epitome of old school romance, adventure and misconceptions.

The characters kept the reader engaged and eager to discover their fate, while the story plot was entertaining and designed to ensure you couldn’t put the book down till the end.

My first read by this author, but definitely not my last.
