Not as much Thorfinn in the volume which made me a little sad :(

The main focus was all the political maneuvering. Also, lots of marching across Wales and England. But we finally meet the prince, who is not what I expected. I do expect we'll get a great character arc with him.

Lots of bloody violence, too, as usual. Although I think this volume was extra violent. I can close to shedding a tear toward the end.

Looking forward to Volume 5!

I can still remember how much I hated Askeladd. Good thing, my yaoi—Canute and Thorfinn—is here as relief, heh. Kidding aside, there will never be justification towards harming innocent lives, especially women, elderly, and children. May your god forgive you, because I never will.

A mi parecer, este tomo no destaca tanto por las escenas de acción (que, como siempre, son increíbles) sino por como el autor transmite la brutalidad de los vikingos. Ya en tomos anteriores hemos visto como saquean y matan, pero en este he llegado a sentir que se me cerraba el estómago leyendo algunas escenas. Este mundo antiguo es duro, y el autor no escatima en detalles para hacérselo comprender al lector.

El nuevo personaje de Knut es presentado como una hoja en blanco, pienso que tiene muchas posibilidades para crecer. A pesar de cómo es presentado en un primer momento, pronto vemos que no todo es como parece y en las pocas páginas de este tomo ya le he cogido más cariño del que en un primer momento esperaba.

Askeladd es el personaje con más protagonismo en este tomo, destacando no sólo por su inteligencia, sino también por su brutalidad. Es un personaje desalmado que sólo se preocupa por sí mismo, con una mente de estratega impresionante. Su personalidad carismática me encanta y se ha convertido ya en uno de mis personajes favoritos.

Con cada tomo, la historia mejora por momentos y te engancha más y más. El dibujo es maravilloso, acompañado de un acertado contexto histórico y con personajes increíbles. Las desventuras de Thorfinn continúan en un mundo complejo y cruel.

More focus on the world than on Thorfinn. It's good but loses a bit of the emotional core.

World: Once again the art is fantastic, the depth of detail is astounding. The world building with the art and the writing is really good. There are moments when I look at the history and the lore and the characters and I am learning and that is some great world building there.

Story: The story shifts a bit from Thorfinn, he's still there but it's more about the situation of the Danes and their war in England. It's good, it's a military book and there are some nice emotions, btu it does take away from the main emotional core of the book. The world is riveting so the story is good, but as I said the core is not as strong here.

Characters: Some nice development for some people, especially the guy Thorfinn is trying to kill (my brain is just suddenly forgetting his name). I like the depth of the character and also the world. I will say the emotions are less in your face this time around cause we step away from Thorfinn's story a bit.

It keeps the world moving forward but it feels colder and more distant.

Onward to the next book!

Перші три томи «Саги про Вінланд» Макото Юкімури стали для мене справжнім відкриттям — не лише завдяки динамічним боям та жорстокому духу епохи вікінгів, а й через майстерну побудову характерів головних героїв. А четвертий трохи змістив акценти, політика, шлях крізь сніг і мовчання, де кожен крок важить більше за меч чи лук.

Сюжет цього тому переносить нас із поля битв у тишу засніжених валлійських земель. Аскеладд разом із невеликим загоном і полоненим принцом Кнутом тікає від переслідування Торкелла. Подорож — це не лише шлях фізичний, а й ментальний: принц вперше опиняється перед вибором, ким бути, а Торфінн спостерігає, як перед ним розгортаються нові обличчя справжньої жорстокості світу. Основна увага — на Аскеладді, його походженні, зв'язку з Уельсом і планах, що виходять далеко за межі власної вигоди. Це вже не лише виживання — це схоже на шахову партію при дворі короля Свена.

У цьому томі небагато бойових сцен — і саме це додає йому сили. Пронизливий холод Уельсу буквально просочується сторінками: сніг, дерева й мовчазні скелі наче застигли свідками болю й смерті. Атмосферу творить не лише пейзаж, а й уривчасті діалоги, тривожні паузи, розмови біля вогнища, коли герої, на мить перевівши подих, мають можливість побалакати. Юкімура створює напругу не через кров, а через очікування та невідомість. І навіть у таких моментах знаходиться місце для цікавих знахідок — наприклад, як заспокоїти солдатів, коли принц мовчить, або ж як переконати війську скласти зброю, щоби безпечно пройти землями валлійськими землями.

Центр цього тому — безумовно, Аскеладд. Ми дізнаємося про його змішане походження, внутрішній конфлікт між вікінгською жорстокістю й валлійською мрією про незалежність. Його мотивація набуває глибини, і навіть його вчинки починають здаватися виправданими. Принц Кнут, на перший погляд кволий і безпорадний, починає прокидатися. Це такий собі натяк про те, ким він можливо колись стане. Торфінн же — майже тінь, але ця тінь бачить, слухає і накопичує гнів. Його час думаю ще настане.

Юкімура вкотре демонструє, наскільки детальним і виразним може бути малюнок. Його пейзажі — не просто фони, а засіб для створення правильного настрою. Сувора природа, замети, дерева, полум'я. Усе це підсилює емоційне напруження сцен. Динаміки мало, але емоцій — через край. І це прекрасно працює саме в такій, спокійнішій частині історії.

Четвертий том «Саги про Вінланд» — несподівано тиха, але сильна частина саги. Тут менше крові, більше стратегії й розмов. Менше дії, більше сенсів. Ми отримали глибший портрет Аскеладда, новий погляд на Кнута, і ще один доказ того, що ця серія — хороша в історичному жанрі. Манґака не боїться сповільнювати темп заради важливих моментів. І це добре.

Hikayenin şahsen çok sevdiğim bir noktaya doğru kaymasını okuyoruz. Artık hikaye Thorfinn'in intikamı olmaktan çıkıp taht gerilimi ve ülkeler arası siyasi gerilime evriliyor. Bu ciltte şu ana dek yakından takip ettiğimiz Thorfinn'in sahneleri pek azdı. Hikayenin çapının büyümesi sebebiyle biraz mazur görmek gerek. Askeladd'ın kimsenin anlayamadığı planları hikayeyi sırtlıyor diyebilirim. Zaten tahmin edilmesi güç bir karakterken üzerine giderek artan derinliği de eklenince okuması çok keyifli bir hale geliyor.

Que manga además de tener una gran historia te enseña cosas que realmente pasaron de una forma amena.

Mis favoritos siguen siendo Askeladd y Thorkell , el protagonista por ahora me parece un niñato la verdad que solo busca venganza pero aun hay que esperar a que crezca y ver como sera.

Liberati il principe Cnut e Ragnar, il suo "mentore", Askeladd e i suoi traversano il mare fino in Galles, e scopriamo come Askeladd sia un discendente del mitico Re Artù, qui storicizzato e miticizzato en passant. Askeladd ha un piano segreto per la libertà della terra natale di sua madre e si intuisce anche che asprira a riunificare quei piccoli regni sotto una unica corona, la sua. Fa patti, assa nella Mercia devastata dalla guerra e compie una styrage in un villaggio in modo da potersi sistemare per trascorrere l'inverno, la neve sta cadendo.
C'è una lunga e sottile diatriba filosofica che va avanti dal primo numero, in sottofondo, tra la morale cristiana e la morale pagana che in questo numero ha un picco d'intensità.

The monk kept saying what is love? To be honest i kept thinking about it and simply to me its the bond where one loves and being loved unconditionally. But i guess in this manga its another thing. (The essence of love is death.. that is true??)

I am truly worried about thorfinn running into thornkell but askellad wants thorfinn to win and he won (with askelland help) but why would he save thornfinn is it cuz he is his trump card??

Tbh i love thornkell stories about thorfinn’s father, Thors. And how that look on Thors — that he discovered what it makes a true warrior.

The prince is changing to better or worse??

Wow. This is a volume of high drama and payoffs. No spoilers, but this volume shakes the story to its very roots. I'm eager to see what happens next.

Considero que lo más relevante de este tomo fue que el pasado de Askeladd (al menos parte de este) se rebeló.

Ragnar ya me tiene harta, prácticamente convirtió al príncipe Canuto en un pelele y un niño mimado. Una cosa es que el muchacho haya nacido en un nido de víboras, y bajo esa circunstancia tenga que pasar desapercibido para sobrevivir, pero ya tiene 17 años ¡Y es un inútil! Por el bien de Canuto, ya deshaganse del viejo ese.

A ver que sorpresas me traen los otros tomos.

The awesomeness of this manga keeps going.

Theres a lot of world building in this volume, great story. Ofcourse there's more of Askeladd than meets the eye. Thorfinn was relegated a little to the background of the story so you can spend more time with rest of the characters. It worked for this volume, just don't do it often please, he's the soul of the story!

Overall, i want more of this!!

Je ne pensais pas trouver la suite d’occasion aussi vite ! A croire que même le sort veut que je lise cette série. L’aventure continue d’avancer, on en apprend un peu plus sur les personnages, même si certains points laisse la place aux doutes, est-ce la vérité ou une autre ruse ? La vengeance ne semble pas encore être pour aujourd’hui, Thorfinn se fait patient, mais aussi un peu arrogant notamment face au prince. Il y a aussi pas mal de réactions démesurées, mais Askeladd arrive très bien à gérer tout ce beau monde.

Pour ce qui est de l’intrigue, en soit, elle n’avance pas beaucoup avec ce tome. Celui-ci sert surtout à développer d’avantage certains personnages, notamment Askeladd. Pour ce qui est du prince, son groupe réussira à le récupérer, et fera désormais tout ce qui est possible pour le ramener sain et sauf. Après tout, sauver un prince ça doit bien rapporter un bot magot, non ? J’étais curieuse de savoir pourquoi Askeladd portait une armure ressemblant à celle des romains, plutôt qu’une viking. J’ai maintenant ma réponse, il a d’ailleurs des contacts avec d’autres personnages ayant ce genre de tenues, c’est très intriguant. Thorfinn se fait plus discret, mais le peu d’action qu’il a au cours du tome sont très marquantes.

Vers la fin du tome, ils pillent un énième village saxon, la manière dont l’auteur aborde l’attaque est intéressante. Il ne prend pas le point de vue des vikings sur toute l’attaque, mais aussi le point de vue d’un nouveau personnage, une des victimes, une jeune fille. Je suppose donc qu’elle reviendra plus tard et aura un certain rôle à tenir. Est-ce que elle aussi sera guidée par la vengeance ? Tout son village a été tué sous ses yeux, alors même qu’elle venait juste de les quitter et sortir. D’un côté, elle se retrouve seule, ce qui est dramatique et triste, de l’autre elle a une sacrée veine pour avoir échappée au carnage. Je suis curieuse de voir son évolution, en espérant que l’auteur pensera à elle de temps en temps, si comme je le pense, elle doit revenir par la suite.

Daddy Askeladd steals the show. Such a great character. Who doesn't love a troubled, conniving bastard with a goatee.

I shouldn't had started with the anime, goddamnit. I know his great plan is going pear-shaped from here on out, and the reading experience is that of bitter anticipation and anguish the closer he gets to York.

The story is so good, it made me consider reassessing my Vagabond ratings. Suddenly Inoue's writing feels all over the place in comparison to this. There's not a character who's not interesting, the plot is thick, and the world-building is intellectually absorbing.

It's pretty satisfying how I can see vaguely the way individual struggles and moral dilemmas of each character are enmeshed in various layers of context. Even if the whole theme of "Viking honour culture vs the Christian culture of guilt" can sometimes come across as somewhat heavy-handed, like in the last chapter of this volume, I have this brain-tingling suspicion there's beefier stuff deeper still in it for me to sink my teeth into.

The mythological and historical stuff is beyond cool as well, be it the petty cut-throat rivalries within the Danish army and the royal family, the Welsh independence matter, or the long-term perspective of the fading and ascending empires.

Honestly, my main concern is that this arc is already peak writing and the manga cannot possibly keep up this level of nuance and tension endlessly. Hopefully it doesn't slump too much after Askeladd's final shenanigans.

The art is decent, I don't find myself particularly impressed by anything. Wish there was a bit more gore. If it's a story about violence, I'd rather it felt truly soul-crashing. But then I might have been skewed by Berserk in this regard.

Que se passe-t-il lorsqu'un jeune bad boy badass se trouve face à un prince très très timide et très très efféminé ?

C'est le clash ! Trop tentant pour le roquet Thorfinn de ne pas se foutre de la gueule du prince Knut qui se cache derrière Ragnar, le géant ado-sitter du prince.

Mais avant de se dire des gentillesses pleines de fiel, il va d'abord falloir sortir de cette fumée provoquée par les feux allumés par les hommes d'Askeladd et grouiller ses puces pour ne pas se faire attraper par les troupes de Thorkell.

Comme je le disais précédemment, les personnages évoluent et certains cachaient bien leur jeu… Maintenant, je ne sais pas non plus si Askeladd joue double ou triple jeu. Avec lui, tout est possible.

Ce tome se consacre à la marche forcée que les hommes d'Askeladd vont devoir faire afin d'échapper à Thorkell, lancé sur leurs trousses. Askeladd étant avare d'informations, ses hommes vont commencer à se poser des questions, à douter de lui, et quand on commence ainsi, c'est que la grève n'est pas loin !

Avec des airs de western spaghetti qui serait venu s'inviter dans le Moyen-âge, ce tome de transition nous apprend des tas de choses sur Askeladd et m'est avis qu'il n'a pas fini de nous étonner, le bougre de salopard qui n'a pas hésité à massacrer tout un village pour y abriter ses hommes.

Un tome de transition, certes, mais un tome généreux en péripéties, en aventures, sans pour autant se disperser dans tous les sens et bâcler ses arcs narratifs.

En 1013, Askeladd et ses hommes vont secourir le prince Knut des griffes de Thorkell, également poursuivi par les hommes du Roi Sven. Trois groupes s'affrontent donc dans une fumée épaisse provoquée par des incendies déclenchés par Askeladd et tout le monde s'entretue. Thorkell et Thorfinn se retrouvent face à face mais un tronc d'arbre enflammé stoppe le combat dans l’œuf.

Finalement, Knut est recupéré par Askelaad avec Ragnar son précepteur. Ils partent mais sont poursuivis par Thorkell, plus rapide qu'eux. Askelaad a contacté de mystérieux renforts, en la personne de Gallois dont il parle la langue. Ils traversent la Severn et rejoignent cette terre peu prospère. Ils la traversent avec plus ou moins de difficulté et on apprend qu'Askelaad serait le lointain, descendant d'Artorius, ancien généralissime de l'illustre Britannia. Il serait gallois par sa mère et danois par son père.

Knut est protégé par Thorfinn durant cette traversée mais ils ne s'entendent clairement pas, leurs caractères sont opposés au possible. Ils finissent par rejoindre l'Angleterre afin de retourner en terre danoise. Une tempête de neige s'abat et ils s'en prennent à un village, tuant ses habitants et les pillant afin de passer l'hiver.

Ні, у Вінланд все ще не потрапили. Але є повернення до реальності - вікінги не були такими собі веселими вояками у смішних шоломах. Вони були людьми свого часу, а час був такий, що життя людини нічого не вартувало. Історія Аскеладда видається притягнутою за вуха, бо з’явилася вона зненацька і у самий сюжетно потрібний момент. Цікаво, що з неї врешті-решт вийде. Торфінн десь на другому плані, його рідко задіюють, він більше спостерігає за тим, що коїться навколо. І зрозуміло, навіщо у цій історії монах, це стара добра гра на контрастах.

В підсумку, хороша частина, з якої потенційно може вирости щось достойне (я не див��вся аніме і не читав піратських перекладів цієї манги, тому плекаю таку надію).

👑 Volume 4 – The Prince and the Wolves (Chapters 25–32)

The political tension ramps up. We meet Prince Canute, a frail, timid boy who seems hopelessly out of place in this brutal world. But his presence sets the stage for everything that’s to come.

Askeladd continues to manipulate every side — the Danes, the English, even his own men. He’s Shakespearean in his cunning. Meanwhile, Thorfinn’s rage feels smaller now, almost pathetic beside the machinations of kings and armies.

Yukimura begins balancing philosophy and politics seamlessly here. The story is still about Vikings, but it’s starting to ask: What makes a true king?

Aquí es donde aprendes a odiar a Askeladd de verdad.
Veo a Miura y veo un tono atroz en el manga que no esperaba. Me recuerda a ese momento en La Compañía Negra, de Glen Cook, en el que te das cuenta que la narración acompaña no ya a antihéroes, sino a los villanos. En este tomo y en el anterior hay una declaración de intenciones que dice a gritos: a pesar de que sean los protagonistas, no son buenas personas.

Y lo cierto es que las obras más grandes están llenas de personajes así. De cabronazos y de bichas.

О в четвертому томі розкривається один персонаж, тепер зрозуміло хто він)
А так розповідається про Кнуда, в мене є підозри, але не впевнена що вірно думаю)
А ще закінчується на такому що хочеться далі читати, але з іншого боку саме момент щоб зробити паузу в читанні(манґи), особливо коли це останній том на поличці, а інші томи я ще не придбала)

P.S. Перекладено 7 томів, а їх 27...це буде довгий шлях збирання але воно того варте)

Dans ce tome-ci, on en apprend plus sur l’homme que Thorfinn souhaite tuer. Askeladd est plus qu’un simple méchant, il a une profondeur et on commence à entrevoir ses sombres desseins pour la suite… ⚔️

On continue aussi l’avancée de l’armée d’Askeladd, dont Thorfinn fait « partie », dans les terres anglaises et dans les royaumes du pays de Galles.

👉 Je suis curieuse de voir ce que la suite de l’histoire nous réserve ! 🤩
