Timothy Doyle is the author of the new YA fantasy novel Faces in the Mist: A Jacob Turner Chronicle. Storytelling has long been a passion of his. Over the years, he was seemingly surrounded by artists and entrepreneurs who were constantly creating and inventing, so Tim finally decided it was time to put his own talents on display. Once security politely escorted him from the 2011 NFL Combine, he decided it was time to move onto Plan B — writing. For Tim, writing is an immersive art that gives him the opportunity to view the world through a different lens.

When he isn’t writing, Tim spends most of his time in the kitchen or in his garage completing woodworking projects that make Ikea furniture seem sturdy. He lives in Denver, CO with his wife Kate and he enjoys running, biking, skiing, hiking—or at least he thinks he’d enjoy those things. He’s usually too busy writing to do them. Tim is also an advocate for other writers who are looking to fulfill their dreams of publication. He firmly believes that the art of storytelling is one that needs to be supported and encouraged.

*This was a book I read for #SPFBO 2018*

I have to say I was not sure this one would be for me as it has more of a contemporary feeling than some of the other books in the competition, and it didn't seem like the kind of book I would naturally gravitate towards, however I ended up being impressed with the immediacy of the writing and the way that it felt like a fast-paced read yet still had some intimate character emotions.

This is the story of Jacob, a young boy who, it turns out, is also a Turner. Being a Turner never seemed like a big deal before, but it quickly comes to light that there are people out there who are going to be looking for him when his powers come to light. Jacob is sent to a safe-house where he learns about these powers, and then as the story goes on he learns about more families with abilities and how they also help fight the supernatural creatures and entities that oppose him.

As I said, this one is fast-paced and it feels quite juvenile at first because the character is only 12 years old. However as the plot moves forward the action and events that unfold take on a more mature theme and I would class this probably as more of a YA/NA book in the end.

Personally although I liked the immediate writing style narrated by Jacob, I still wanted more of a connection from him at times. I felt like there was just something I couldn't fully connect with and I can't quite pin down what that is, but maybe it's just because he is a young and naive character. I found myself thinking that although the story was fun, it wasn't standing out to me as one that I would fully remember as much as I wanted to. 3*s from me in the end, 6/10 for #SPFBO

Faces in the Mist: A Jacob Turner Chronicle is a YA fantasy by Timothy C. Doyle. A sinister creature attacks and injures 12-year-old Jacob Turner, so his concerned parents send him to a safe house with Father Riley. Carver, who manages the sanctuary, becomes Jacob’s mentor. He tells Jacob of the Turners’ unique magical powers, teaches him self-defense, and how to hone his newly discovered talent.

The teen learns of eight other “gifted” families that also fight supernatural entities. When Father Riley sends him on a mission to rescue a teen controlled by a monster, Jacob worries that his inexperience and unfamiliar magic won’t be strong enough to succeed.

Dark magic, gruesome looking, terrifying villains and brave defenders who fight demonic creatures make Faces in the Mist: A Jacob Turner Chronicle very thrilling. It is a wonderfully written story that shows how Jacob Turner had to adapt quickly to unexpected and unbelievable changes he usually considered unreal. Most of the story is narrated by Jacob, who manages to maintain a wry sense of wit, even when in danger.

Timothy C. Doyle’s imaginative writing style will attract young adults who enjoy reading fantasy and supernatural genres. It’s very intriguing with lots of fast-paced action involving cleverly orchestrated sword fighting and other exciting drama. All the characters are interesting, especially members of the nine gifted families. It would be nice to read more about them. I encourage the author to continue the Jacob Turner Chronicles as I enjoyed reading Faces in the Mist.

I loved this book! It grabbed me from the very first chapter and I found it very hard to put it down until I was finished. The old story of good and evil, told in an exciting and different way was done extremely well. The characters were well written and became real people that I cared about very quickly. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fantasy adventure.

I truly enjoyed this book. The author has a good way with words and draws you into the action. I had a hard time putting this down to do other things. Although it is listed as a young adult, it has some very adult themes in it. The main character is a young boy of 12 so I am sure that is why it is classified the way it is. I cannot wait for the sequel.
