Joan Hambidge is an Afrikaans poet, literary theorist and academic (the English surname notwithstanding). She is notorious for her out-of-the-closet style of writing (often satirical).
Hambidge studied at the University of Stellenbosch and the University of Pretoria She received her doctorate under André P. Brink at Rhodes University in 1985. She received a second doctorate from the University of Cape Town in 2001.
She was awarded one of the most coveted South African literary prizes- the Eugène Marais Prize for literature- in 1986, for her second volume of poetry, Bitterlemoene ("Bitter Oranges"). She also won the Litera Prize as well as the Poetry Institute of Africa Prize for her poetry.
She is currently a professor at the School of Languages and Literature at the University of Cape Town. In addition to this she travels and writes prolifically. She is also a critic and columnist for the Afrikaans literary e-zine Litnet.
In 1995 "postmodernism" was the buzz word and this book is Hambidge's attempt at saying something about it in Afrikaans - certainly a pioneer in those days. It needs to be read along with other books on postmodernism, I found Brian McHale helpful here.
