Major-General Chaim Herzog was an Israeli military officer, attorney, politician and writer who served as the sixth President of Israel between 1983 and 1993.

He was born in Belfast and raised predominantly in Dublin, where his father, Yitzhak HaLevi Herzog, served as Ireland's Chief Rabbi. In 1935 he emigrated to Mandatory Palestine, then served in the Haganah during the 1936–39 Arab revolt. He volunteered for service in the British Army during World War II, and was commissioned as an officer of the Intelligence Corps in 1943. He left the British Army in 1947 as a major, and returned to Palestine. After the end of the British Mandate and Israel's Declaration of Independence, he served as an officer of the Israel Defence Forces during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. He retired from the IDF in 1962 with the rank of major-general.

After practising law for a few years, Major-General Herzog served as Israel's Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1975 to 1978. He was elected to the Knesset in the 1981 elections, and in March 1983 he was elected President of Israel. He served two terms in that position, and retired in 1993.

.A very comprehensive one volume work on Israel's wars of defense against Arab efforts to drive the Jews into the sea from the 1948 War of Independence until the 1982 Operation Peace for Galilee when Israeli forces pushed into Lebanon to flush out the PLO terror network. But the author makes it clear that the war really began with Arab pogroms against Jews in Palestine in the 1920, therefore this conflict is now nearly a century old.
This concentrates on the military aspects but still contains valuable incites on the political and social criterion.
Brief descriptions of the heroes who fought to defend Israel from annihilation.'
In the Book on the War of Independence the author highlights how the British payed quite an extensive role in the war on the Arab's side, Even after the British pullout towards the end of the war British military aircraft's attacked Israel to aid the Egyptians and most were swiftly shot down by Israel;s valiant pilots.
The Arab armies that attacked Israel included the Egyptians, Syrians, Lebanese, Iraqis , The Arab Legion from Transjordan commanded by British officer Lieutenant-General John Glubb, and tow Arab terrorist groups, Fawzi al Kaujki's Arab Liberation Army
and Mufti Haj Amin al Husseini's Army of Salvation. These two terror armies included British deserters who had formed the British Fascist Army, Nazi German expatriates who had served in the Wehrmacht and SS, Yugoslav Muslims who served in the SS Hanjar divisions, and Croats from Ustasha.
In the Chapter of the Six Day War the author explains the facts behind the much publicized accidental attack on the SS Liberty by Israeli forces explaining it was clearly unknown this vessel was american and that given the relations between the USA and Israel at the time the Israelis would have no reason to attack the ship. Fault lies squarely with the American authorities who saw fit to position a spy ship against a friendly nation in a time of war with no information given to the Israeli authorities.
From 1955 onwards with the so called 'Czech Agreement' where the Soviets signed a deal to supply Egypt with massive arms shipments, the Soviets had played a large role in the Middle East conflict as a malignant force that actually several times pressured the Arab states to reject compromise and egged them on to war in both the Six Day War and the Yom Kippur War
soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev practically forced Algeria to join in the attack on Israel while urging several other Arab countries to join their Arab 'brothers' in attacking Israel. Without Soviet influence Egypt would liely have signed a peace deal with Israel much sooner as may have several other Arab states.
In the Chapter on the Yom Kippur War the author draws our attention to the Battle of Latakia, fought between the Israelis and Egyptians, being the first naval missile battle in history

What is invaluable in this book is the chapter on Israel's daring rescue at Entebbe operation in 1976 after PFLP terrorists hijacked an Air France plane to Uganda where they released the other passengers but kept all Jewish passengers hostage. There was certainly something obscene 31 years after the Holocaust about Germans shouting orders at Jewish hostages and waving guns over their heads, while engaging in 'selektzia' - selection of the prisoners of terror, with all those with Israeli names ordered into a different section of the building.
The Arab terrorists of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine were were led by a German man and woman from the Marxist German terrorist group the Baader Meinhof Gang. Their behaviuor reminded at least one hostage, himself bearing tattooed numbers from a concentration camp of Nazis.. A comprehensive Chapter also on Operation Peace in Galilee in 1982. We learn something on the Lebanese Civil War started by the PLO in 1975.
Thankfully the author here mentions the 1976 massacre by the PLO of the Christian town of Damour in which thousands of innocent men, women and children were slaughtered. by PLO terrorists
many more innocents were murdered in this massacre, than in the raids by the Phalangists into Sabra and Shatilla.
Of the 460 Muslims killed in Sabra and Shatilla, only 35 were women and children.
425 where men, terrorist combatants, 300 of them Palestinians and 100 of them Muslim Lebanese, the remainder being terrorist volunteers such as Iranians, Syrians and Algerians.
Far less innocents died here then in Damour.
And yet Damour is forgotten, while Sabra and Shatilla are forever hyped up to this day.
In essence the raids into Sabra and Shatilla by the Lebanese Christians were a kind of long awaited retribution for the years of living and being subjected to genocide, under the ruthless yolk of the PLO.

Because of the military and battle detail Perfect for military historians and war gamers.

This book describes the various wars between Israel and the Arabs that took place between 1948 and 2003. It presents the military aspect of the wars so the nationality of the author doesn't make a great difference. It is concise and quite densely written so it requires some degree of concentration on behalf of the reader. The battles are broadly described with enough level of detail to get the broad picture but not the details that might interest military history buffs or wargamers. It is a good single-volume history of these wars and it is a great starting point for anyone wanting to study this particular aspect of history.

This is an essential book for those with an interest in Middle Eastern history , Military history, Israeli history, Arab history, or the history of Terrorism. All of these get covered pretty well although at a fast clip. The author, himself an Israeli Military/political Legend, stops throughout to introduce characters and give you quick historical perspectives on their complete careers in a way that is very helpful in digesting the material. We start in the Mandate and cruise very quickly and easily over the wars in succession, 1948, 1956, 1967, 1973, 1982- with every last Terror attack and reprisal raid covered as well. Even those with the most casual interest will find the width depth and speed of this book engaging. The military enthusiast will be held in rapt attention throughout.

This is a really good survey of the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict from the 1948 Indepencence War to the El-Aqsa Intifada. Although written from an Israeli perspective, it does not treat the Arabs or Palestinians with disrespect. Israel did not become master of the battlefield by disrespecting and underestimating its enemies.

For a long time, I have respected the Israeli Defense Force. In general, it has been highly effective, showing great flexibility, innovation and gritty determination in times of crisis. As a veteran, I remember a strong emphasis on theater, such as military bearing, etc. The Israelis, on the other hand, don't have the time and resources to waste on these trivialities and don't even try. Good for them!

Excellent summary of the Middle East conflicts since 1948, with an updated section covering 1973 to 2003.

Concise summary and review of the key conflicts, with some thoughtful reflection on the strengths and weaknesses of each side, but more importantly how this has progressed the situation from endless conflict to the possibility of a peaceful outcome.

The last paragraph does contain an ominous warning however..” within seven or eight years, the Jewish population is set to become a minority in the region between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean.”

Useful background reading for anyone wanting a summary of the tangled history of the region, and why peace has been elusive.

(3.5) Regardless of what roles Herzog has held in Israeli political life, at heart he is a military aficionado-and his writing style is reflective of that. For my taste, this was a very dry read and difficult to get through. However, it is a thorough military retelling of the various Arab-Israeli wars.
Considering Herzog's position, his narrative was surprisingly (but not consistently) objective. If nothing else, it is a useful contribution to the body of primary source documents on the subject.

Very detailed, but dry as dust. More for the academic than the lay reader. I can see why Herzog took on a co-author in later editions. Depicts the successes and failures of the Israelis and Arabs during the War of Independence through the war in Lebanon.

Excellent. Wish I had read this before spending time in Israel in 2018. Detailed discussion of the tension in maintaining Israel’s country.

Tough reading. Battle positions has to be set and remembered then the battle starts and you have to remember where everything thing is. But then the reading is great.

One of several texts that should be considered necessary reading for any student of the modern middle east. It is almost true that I will not listen to anyone spewing their uninformed opinions on the region and its politics if they have not bothered to invest the time in learning the history (both ancient and recent) that have brought us to today. Unfortunately, we have just witnessed 8 years of U.S. foreign policy directed by just such people.

A dense and authoritative guide to the background, people, events, and aftermaths of several wars between the Israelis and their Arab neighbors. This book captures the methods and subculture of the Israeli military, which caused it to be so far superior to their enemies that they were able to repeatedly fight and win against some of the most lopsided odds in the history of modern warfare.

A concise and readable account of the Arab-Israeli conflict from 1948 to the Intifada in the 1990s. Probably the best account available for anyone wanting to know what has happened in that part of the world.
