Questo primo romanzo di Lorenza Pieri presenta molti e consistenti punti di forza: l'analisi dei rapporti interpersonali (quelli tra sorelle, tra madre e figlie, tra padre e figlie, tra padre e madre sono i rapporti maggiormente indagati, ma decisamente ben approfondite anche le relazioni tra altri personaggi), il passaggio tormentato della grande Storia su quello scoglio spazzato dal vento che è il Giglio, la tensione generata dall'ansia di uscire dalla condizione di minorità dettata dalla vita isolana e, in senso contrario, l'evocazione di un attaccamento mai interamente confessato a questa terra...
Un finale che lascia aperta la porta alla speranza: se la generazione seguita ai sessantottini non ha saputo distinguersi per intraprendenza e lotta contro le ingiustizie, tale missione potrebbe essere assolta da coloro da cui meno ce lo aspettiamo...
Un appunto: i discorsi diretti talvolta trattati alla Saramago (cancellando i segni di interpunzione): scelta stilistica (in questo caso confesso di non averla capita) o svista?
Consigliato a chi ama le isole (e, in particolare, il Giglio), a chi pensa che l'isolamento costituisca un limite, a chi crede che per fronteggiare la grande Storia sia necessario trovarsi sulle barricate innalzate nelle città ospiti dei centri di potere...

A family saga set in an island in Italy - Giglio - and spanning from the 1970s to 2012. I’m not overly familiar with Italian history and this managed to give an overview at least - an idea. For one, I loved the way the title was used in text and how it relates to protagonist, Teresa. Teresa, I found to be a relatable character which was both a good and bad thing for me, because she has these traits that I want myself to lose. I expected this to be a story that was equally historical and familial, but it focused more on relationships and the impact of history; all of which I still appreciated.
This began as a solid 4 star for me. I liked the prose, Teresa’s inner turmoils, her relationship with her family especially that of her sister, then eventually her father. For some reason I could not exactly pinpoint, my interest waned a little past the halfway mark and the ending didn’t help. I thought I’d be more emotional over this, on that regard, it failed. It started to feel rushed and dry somehow. I expected more, something different and more evocative from the direction it went instead I just felt removed.
Either way, I still liked this but definitely could have been more. Recommend for those who like books which focus on characters and relationships.

Vanity Fair's quote on the cover of my edition states that the author's voice has echoes of Elsa Morante and Elena Ferrante. I haven't read Morante yet, but if there are echoes of Ferrante they are exactly this--echoes, weak mementos of something else.
Look, I really liked the first half of this book. Teresa's childhood/early adolescence is the highlight of this novel and why it gets 3 stars and not lower. The second half is...not so enticing. All characters become sort of flat once she becomes an adult, and I don't think it's because of a loss of childhood whimsy. The last section in particular felt almost shallow in terms of the emotional place where this character was.
I also feel like it's quite a stretch to call this a "family saga" as it is clearly focused on one character's life and her family history comes across more as a colorful background (and often more interesting than her story, to be honest). The romantic plot feels tacked on, more than integral, and the resolution feels rushed.
I'm often a fan of open-ended stories and I really wanted to love this book, especially after I finished the first part, but it just didn't do it for me. I'm still curious to read The Garden of Monsters by the same author.

Was in search of a contemporary Italian novel set somewhere I’d be visiting in the next few weeks. This didn’t quite grab me—it aims for historical sweep and tries for a family epic but nothing felt earned or profound to me. Struggled to keep pages flipping at points. Maybe would be of more interest to Italians who lived through some of the historical milestones.

Șirul poveștii pare puțin grăbit si pe alocuri superficial, ca si cand autoarea si-a dorit sa includă cat mai multa poveste in cat mai puține pagini. Cu toate acestea, e o poveste faina, despre familia Teresei si viata pe insula Giglio, pe parcursul copilăriei si maturității ei. S-a terminat prea brusc, ii lipsește totuși ceva.

Un affresco degli ultimi 40 di storia molto più riuscita rispetto a "Oliva Denaro": la componente linguistica qui è utilizzata con molta abilità e dosata nei momenti giusti.
I temi principali quali l'attaccamento all'isola, il classismo e l'inadeguatezza vengono ben trattati e delineati, così come lo sono i personaggi.
Inoltre lo stile di scrittura è molto scorrevole e rende la lettura un piacere.
Finirà sicuramente nella lista dei libri preferiti del 2023.
I temi principali quali l'attaccamento all'isola, il classismo e l'inadeguatezza vengono ben trattati e delineati, così come lo sono i personaggi.
Inoltre lo stile di scrittura è molto scorrevole e rende la lettura un piacere.

1. When I hear the phrase "multi-generational saga," I reach for my… haiku? Except when it comes packaged in a trim little Europa paperback with their signature fancy French flaps.
2. And especially when, unlike the Elena Ferrante quartet namechacked on its jacket, this cover features a fetching illustration of Giglio Island, and the novel covers a mere 176 pages.
3. That's my kind of four-decade epic. In fact, I started it while waiting to board a 7 am flight, and finished it before bed in another state.
4. I can read almost anywhere (I carry earplugs), but airports and airplanes are among my favorites. You don't have to do anything, you won't know anyone, and they have bathrooms.
5. Knowing I would be flying, friends escalated their book recommendations. I received a free copy of Helen Oyeyemi's "White is for Witching" from one–looks good! Another pressed me so aggressively to start "A Gentleman in Moscow," that I uncharacteristically told him the truth: "I don't think that's for me."
6. "I don't think that's for me." I didn't even add the "just at this moment." I didn't say "Definitely, one of these days," much less, "It's on my list, for sure. I hear it's great."
7. I just grabbed a cool-looking book off the bookstore shelf, the day before I left. I didn't look it up. I had never heard of it. And it was the perfect single-day saga. Not that I'm recommending it. You're perfectly capable of finding your own books.

Era la fine di agosto del 1976. In genere la conclusione delle vacanze degli altri segnava l’inizio delle nostre. I turisti tornavano in città e noi restavamo ad aspettare con calma l’autunno dentro una stagione calda ancora lunga, e avevamo tempo e spazio tutti per noi. Fino a metà ottobre sedici di minima, ventisette di massima, mare calmo, spiagge deserte. Solo cinque tipi di rumore: acqua contro scogli, acqua contro scafi, motori a scoppio, grida di uccelli, voci umane.
Ho adorato subito l'incipit di questo libro. La fine dell'estate per me ha sempre coinciso con il rientro a casa dalle vacanze, il ritorno a scuola e più tardi in ufficio, pertanto l'ho sempre vissuto con un velo di tristezza...l'unica nota piacevole, il mio compleanno!
Non ho mai pensato a come potesse essere il mare che io lasciavo per chi ci viveva, potersi riappropriare dei propri luoghi senza il caos portato dai turisti, godere ancora del tepore del sole, del profumo della salsedine...
Isole minori è la storia di due sorelle, Teresa (la voce narrante) e Caterina. Le loro vicende si svolgono in un arco temporale di 40 anni, dalla metà degli anni '70 al 2012. Vivono con i genitori e Nonnalina all'isola del Giglio, qui crescono fino alla separazione dei genitori, dopodiché sono costrette a trasferirsi sul continente. Insieme alle loro vicende, Lorenza Pieri racconta anche fatti della storia italiana, da Piazza Fontana ai giorni d'oggi. Lo fa in modo semplice, senza appesantire il romanzo, anzi, questi frammenti di storia danno alle vicende delle protagoniste spessore e credibilità.
Attraverso il racconto di Teresa ho visto la bellezza di un'isola, il cui mare ho avuto la fortuna di conoscere. Nonostante tutto però non sono riuscita a provare simpatia per lei e il finale mi ha deluso rispetto ad una storia che ho apprezzato molto.
Lo considero comunque un ottimo esordio!

Un roman qui permet de s’évader dans une île celle de Giglio au large de la Toscan là-bas en Italie. Teresa nous raconte son enfance qui ne l’a jamais quitté. Sa mère cette figure combattante avec les cheveux d’un rouge qui lui valut le surnom de «la Rouge», sa sœur Caterina qui n’a pas seulement hérité de sa chevelure mais aussi de son caractère. Sa grand-mére qui avait vécu l’Histoire et son père un hasard presque un étranger dans cette famille où les femmes prennent les devants.

L’écriture est fluide, l’auteur maîtrise son récit. On n’a pas l’impression d’être acculé par l’histoire, c’est une lecture calme qui nous montre le paysage d’une Italie que l’on voudrait encore revoir aujourd’hui.

Splendida prima parte che tratta in maniera profonda i rapporti tra i personaggi, in uno scenario di grande Storia che arriva a toccare anche quest'isola schiva, descritta non tanto per immagini quanto dal carattere e dagli atteggiamenti degli isolani e dei turisti. Nell'ultima parte mi è mancato un po' l'aspetto emozionale, che ho sentito messo in disparte dalla cronaca, forse anche perché recente e di grande rimbalzo mediatico. In ogni caso, è un libro ben scritto che si legge d'un fiato. Personalmente poi adoro i libri ambientati in luoghi che conosco, e il poter rivedere gli scenari davanti agli occhi durante la lettura. Giglio nel <3 !

Lesser Islands started out slow, and it took some time for me to get into it. I don’t think it’s because it’s not well written, but because I don’t have the historical understanding necessary to appreciate it fully.
It all picked up when Teresa and Caterina were teenagers, and when they were adults, things got really great.
Wholeheartedly recommend this read. It’s beautiful, honest, doesn’t put rose-coloured glasses on, and moves like life. You know how we think we can stay in a moment, but then end up not being able to? This book is that. Fleeting moments of things that matter and stays with us — but we never stay in them.
It all picked up when Teresa and Caterina were teenagers, and when they were adults, things got really great.

This family saga set on a Tuscan Island translated from Italian was insightful and engrossing. The Island itself was a main character, I felt, constantly pulling its inhabitants back to its shores. Family and place ground the characters and in the end, they are the most influential forces in the main characters’ lives. I would recommend this book to lovers of Elena Ferrante’s books. It is told in first person voice by the main character Teresa.

The ending was rushed and out of nowhere since its was going to be boring, and the last 2 parts seemed needed only to fill the pages and the synopsis of the book was only in part one and some of 2 with minor tie ins to feel more incoperprated. And lastly, a 40 year old main character mother told her she had less strength and good ideals than her 11 year old son (who was in the book for under 50 pages). Character development wasn't at its best today, 2.4 stars...

Questo libro affronta diverse tematiche importanti : l'isolamento della vita su un'isola, il rapporto a volte difficile ma simbiotico tra sorelle, il legame con la terra d'origine, le difficoltà di una mamma single.

Lo consiglio a chi vuole ripercorrere un pezzo di storia italiana, a chi ama la Toscana e i suoi luoghi, a chi sopporta personaggi incapaci di essere felici.

I thought the writing was really beautiful and poetic and loved that it was a translation of the original book which is in Italian, but the plot was a bit confusing and the ending was very abrupt. But I did enjoy some parts of it and would recommend it!

It didn't always seem like the most cohesive translation effort, and too many oversights in the proofreading—but I did love this little story fiercely, wherein our narrator's childhood never really ends and emerges as a peace worth defending.

Non avevo mai letto nulla della Pieri e sono contenta di aver iniziato con Isole Minori. La storia di una famiglia ambientata all’isola del giglio e raccontata con una scrittura piacevole e profonda.

Read for Booklist. Though punctuated with difficult and life-changing events, this is a lovely book about one woman's relationship with her home.
