Avatars, dragons, and zombies? What could be more friendly for all ages than original tales from these prime Dark Horse worlds? Nothing. For Free Comic Book Day 2016, take a journey with the Avatar from The Legend of Korra, the dragon riders from How to Train Your Dragon, and the fun dead of Plants vs. Zombies!

This was really cute. I don't quite like Korra as much as Aang, but I still liked seeing this sweet little origin story of her and Naga. That ending was the best. 5/5 stars.
This comic is split into: 1) Legend of Korra, 2) How to Train Your Dragon, and 3) Plants Vs. Zombies.
1) The Legend of Korra section is adorable and I love seeing how Korra and Naga find each other. Lovely art, and writing - Korra feels very much like herself. It's making me really excited for the ongoing series in the future! (My overall rating is based on this section)
2) The How to Train Your Dragon part has the group of Vikings trapped in a cave, preparing for battle as they're surrounded by... some scary creatures... They tell little stories to each other and each has a different feel to it (romantic, horror, adventure, etc). The art is really nice as well. (4 stars)
3) ... To be perfectly honest, I skipped this one. The art didn't appeal to me and I don't know anything about the franchise.
Well, this one is old news. But I only read it recently, so I'm reviewing it anyways. This was dark horse comics' free comic book offered for free comic book day 2016. So why the heck would I go to the trouble to get a Dark Horse account just for this free comic that has a Legend of Korra Story, a How To Train Your Dragon Story, and a Plants vs Zombies Story?
The second story mentioned, for How To Train Your Dragon, is the answer. I was quite impressed with the first graphic novel written to tie into the movies, "The Serpent's Heir", a book that has done the impossible: use narration and actually make me like it (if anyone has been following my comic book reviews you know how much i hate the use of narration), so when I saw this comic had a Httyd story I had to have it. Either way, this has two other stories so I'll review them too.
THE LEGEND OF KORRA: FRIENDS FOR LIFE- 5 Stars This story is an origin tale showing how Korra first encountered the creature that would become her animal companion, Naga, in the TV show. Korra is in the middle of a training session with water bending master Katara (one of the main characters from Avatar: The Last Airbender, which Korra is a sequel too) when a storm comes their way, only for the overly curious and rebellious Korra to run off and get stuck in the storm. First, a confession: I have never seen The Legend of Korra. While I loved Avatar: The Last Airbender, I never continued on to its sequel series, which also has become a beloved classic. But reading this comic has peaked my interest, and now I am HYPED to finally watch Legend of Korra. This story was amazing. The artwork perfectly suited the cute and light-hearted tone of this story. And good god, it was kriffing adorable. The story has so much heart and I couldn't stop smiling as I read it. Through the art and the dialogue Korra felt like a believable and adorable little child and I loved it. The parents and Katara come off as likeable characters too. Coming from someone who has not watched The Legend of Korra yet, this comic made me want to watch it. And I think that says alot.
HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: BURNING MIDNIGHT- 3.5 Stars This is the story that I downloaded this for. In "Burning Midnight" all the dragon riders we followed from the second How To Train Your Dragon film are pursued by a horde of tiny predatory dragons. Toothless trapped them in a cave for their protection, with one caveat: the other dragons are stuck outside. With nothing else to do, everyone goes around the campfire telling stories about Stoic. It was overall good. Each character tells a story that is fitting to their character. Astrid tells a particularly heartfelt story, but the ones told by Snotlout and Valka are good too. It's also perfectly fitting that Eret is the one keeping watch at the cave entrance. My only problems are that the comic in seems too lighthearted to fit the scenario in Gobber's story, and despite an in-comic explanation I would have liked to hear from fishlegs. But maybe I'm being to harsh. It's quite solid for what it is and the artwork is still impressive.
PLANTS VS ZOMBIES: THE LADY IN RED- 1.5 stars I forgot what it was about when I first read it. I literally read it again just now so I could write a summary for this review, and I forgot about it instantly. That's a big problem. I also don't remember who any of the characters are, and the artwork was lackluster. The biggest problem though was that almost the whole thing was narrated with lengthy word boxes. But I guess it's not offensive or anything. It's ridiculously bland, but harmless.
THE CONCLUSION: If you didn't pick this up for free comic day last year don't worry too much about it, but you may come across a hidden gem if you find it. You can stop reading once you get to the Plants vs Zombies story and have two perfectly good shorts. The How To Train Your Dragon Story (ie, the one I came for) satisfied me perfectly well, but the Legend of Korra Story was an incredible surprise. Either way, I'm glad I decided to go to the trouble to get a dark horse account and acquire a digital copy.
The Legend of Korra: Friends for Life - 4 stars This is why I read the comic in the first place. Having just recently finished The Legend of Korra animated series, I wanted to finish off the current Avatar canon with the Korra comics and graphic novels, this being the first among the short list. I found it to be a brief, cute story where Korra and Naga meet for the very first time. It's well illustrated, cameos an elderly Katara, and feels very Avatar. All in all, a nice, somewhat fluffy, little comic.
How to Train Your Dragon: Burning Midnight - 4 stars I'm not as familiar with HtTYD as I am Avatar/Korra, but I knew enough to enjoy this little comic. Hiccup and his Viking crew are stuck in a cave, preparing for a big battle, when they begin sharing stories (mostly tall tales) in remembrance of Hiccup's father, Chief Stoik. Each of the tales are told by different individuals and feature different art styles. Fans of the series would find enjoyment here!
Plants Vs. Zombies: The Lady in Red - 1 stars Isn't this a game for your phone? Anyways, this is an incredibly short story written in an old detective narrating to himself fashion. Nothing interesting happens. The art is just passable. And it doesn't seem like there's even any fan service for fans of the series. Hard pass.
FCBD 2016 has 3 stories. The first two are good, the last is terrible.
Legend of Korra - Friends For Life - Michael Dante DiMartino - 5*
Korra: "You're just a pup. Where's your pack? Are you lost? I'm not going to hurt you. I'm friendly."
How Korra met and befriended Naga, her polar bear dog companion. A nice, sweet, heart-warming story!
How To Train Your Dragon - Burning Midnight - Dean DeBlois & Richard Hamilton - 5*
Hiccup "Only that Dad would've liked this. What we're doing right here, right now, telling stories before a big BATTLE. Dad used to call it "burning midnight."
Best story of the bunch, Hiccup and his acquaintances reminisce about Chief Stoick while they're huddled together in a cave in preparation to save their dragons. A great series of small stories, told in different styles, with different art, but all wonderful. Best art out of the 3 stories
Plants vs. Zombies - The Lady in Red - Paul Tobin - 3*
"Yeah. I was in there. I was also in trouble, and I knew it. The girls name was Patrice, and everything about her was trouble. She looked like Trouble. Smelled like Trouble."
Written in Noir detective style, but not hard-bitten because it's a kid. The story AND art are pretty juvenile, they really dragged down this series. Not sure how there's a market for plants vs. zombies, maybe the game makes it popular?
--- This review only applies to the Legend of Korra story.
"Friends for Life" is a sweet and cute short comic from Free Comic Book Day. As in other iterations, it is a small slice of life that shows us how Korra and Naga met.
It is short and nothing is at stake, however, if one is familiar with the characters, it is a small adventure to enjoy.
Adorable!! The style and art of the avatar is always something I will cherish and miss from time to time, so I guess it's great that there is some more content I didn't see yet instead of rewatching the shows over and over again :') It's just a short story but it's pretty, nostalgic, heartwarming, and there are small extra stories from HTTYD and zombies and plants or sth, I really don't know the last one.
This was just too cute. I love dogs! I love puppies! So, naturally, a short comic about how Korra meets Naga when she was a pup and how they bond to become the best of friends was right up my alley. I loved this. It was just warm and fuzzy.
Reseña solo por el mini cómic "Friends for Life".

i remember finding this comic years ago in a used bookstore in a city i visit rarely. it was a great surprise for me and i'd treasure this comic forever. what a cute cute cute story of naga and korra's childhood
