A Short History of Hungary is a short overview of the history of Hungary. Chapter 1: The Prehistory of the Hungarians and their Settlement in the Carpathian Basin Chapter 2: The Medieval Kingdom of Hungary Chapter 3: Tripartite Hungary Chapter 4: The Lands of the Hungarian Crown in the Habsburg Empire Chapter 5: Hungary since the First World War
It’s a useful, quick introduction in Hungarian history and that’s exactly what I wanted. It was four stars until the last section - it needed a few more pages (and a bit more transparency) for the period from WWI onwards.
A Short History of Hungary gives a fine overview. The last chapter on the post-Habsburgian period is almost too short and sketchy, though. Proofreading could have been better here and there. It is well illustrated with many maps and pictures. I recommend this fine little book.
A good, quick read and a useful overview. I read most of it on the plane. At times a bit dense, but I guess that's the point of a "short history." It's a good quick reference to the most significant moments and people in Hungarian history.
Should really be 2.5 stars. I found this not engaging or particularly enlightening with regards Hungarian History. It held some inaccuracies and clearly aimed to support the national narratives without much in the way of self or external reflection. The final section on more modern stuff is better.
There are numerous errors in the text (repeated phrases and words...); I honestly don't know how these types of things get past editors.
That said, if you know little of Hungarian history this might be an easy option for you to start.
Good introduction to Hungarian history. But if you don't have any background knowledge of Hungarian history then there are quite a few gaps which are hard to follow.
