The mighty river An freezes from shore to shore, and the army of horrors from Angere marches across to devour peaceful and beautiful Andar. Cait, Hellen, and the others head north, hoping to slow the invasion. At Islagray, Ashen battles to make sense of the reunited Shadow Grimoire, seeking a way to turn the undain’s necromancy against itself. Fighting dark magic with dark magic is a grim and dangerous road.
Meanwhile, in our world, Fer evades Genera and the undain as she undertakes a desperate mission to sever the supply of Spirit fuelling the armies of Angere.
Unlikely friends rise to the skies, and hidden enemies wait to betray Cait and Fer. With every defeat, Andar fades. And at Islagray, the heart of the land, the last free place, the Song can barely be heard over the rising tide of war.
This is the final book in what has been an amazing trilogy where good fights against evil in a land that was cloven and divided by the river An whereby the witch king and his Undain creatures live in the city of bone known as Angere and the witches and other people live in Andar and the witch king lives on and creates his creatures through necromancy by draining the spirit from people living in our own world on earth. Winter is upon them, the An is freezing over which meant that the Undain would finally be able to cross from Angere to invade Andar. We join the witches from Andar and Manchester in their bid to fight the Witch King Menhroth, and mend the rift of the cloven land. Cait, Fer and Hellen with the aid of friends like Johnny, Danny, Lugg, the Lizard King and Catherine, Cait's grandmother they fight with all their powers to defeat the might of machines and technology used and abused in the name of greed for power. The scary thing about this tale is the fact that nowadays all over the world, technology has really taken over, machines are really draining people of their life force, turning them into automatons, and people never question the fact that their every move is under surveillance, through their own mobile phones. That their are cameras which link us all to the smart grid cutting us off from our natural roots and our reason for living. Making people go against their own natures was what had started all the trouble in the first place and even the dead were realising this and wanting to help put a stop to the evil but will the living in our own time and world do so too before it is too late for all of us and our planet? Hyrn, the green man must be so upset with what we have done to our environment! This series is a must for those who love nature and are in tune with the beating of our mother's heart!
Satisfying conclusion to a well written trilogy, all three were gripping and exciting throughout. The story led through twists and turns which were both exciting and surprising without being unbelievable. This series does not suffer at all from 'sequelitis' (the series starting well but progressively becoming weaker) as is so common in this genre. I would definitely recommend to any who have started to read and enjoy the first book, do continue through the series, you won't be disappointed. The only thing that has kept me from giving this book a full 5 stars is one small addition at the end that I personally would not have included. This did not detract from the enjoyment of the book in the slightest and many readers will prefer to have had it there.
I was frequently unwilling to put these books down and will certainly be keeping my eye out for future fantasy novels from this author.
