BE A HUMAN CALCULATOR

Rate this book
There are plenty of books available in the market on faster calculations but more often than not the authors of such books had not tested the techniques they propound and promote in real life problem solving situations. However, the techniques that you shall find in this book have been tested and used (not only by the author but by countless other people) in examinations time and again.

Many techniques mentioned in other books are pretty impractical and sometimes completely unusable. This book is not a package of magic. It is rather a package of methods that if practiced and persevered with can churn up magical results!

This book could be a great resource for various competitive examinations and students in middle and senior school. It could help the reader in myriad ways depending upon his or her needs and scope for practice. At the same time one could figure out as to which technique would work for one and which would not, again depending upon one’s set of circumstances and needs. By reading this book, the students will be able to:

(a) learn quicker methods by observing some simple techniques;
compare various techniques available on each topic;

(b) know the limitations of each technique;

(c) save some precious minutes in various competitive and school examinations by employing the quick calculation techniques;

(d) develop their own tools in the field of quick calculations.

‘Only by spreading knowledge does one expand one’s own sphere of knowledge.’

Indian author Rajesh Sarswat is a Post Graduate in Computer Science and worked from a senior capacity under the Government of India until he retired to pursue his passion for writing and teaching, focusing on mathematics and research on various techniques and concepts of quick mathematics. BE A HUMAN CALCLATOR is the result of his research in this field for the past 20 years. His other books include “Avoid Silly Mistakes in Mathematics", and " How to Memorize Formulas in Mathematics" and "How to Memorize Formulas in Mathematics Book-2 Trigonometry."

Rajesh’s fine book is a workbook. As he offers his reason for writing the book in his Preface we discover, ‘The roots of this book could be traced to the year 1991 when I skimmed through a small article in a vernacular newspaper on quick mathematics. The article was based on a technique of multiplication evolved by Jakow Trachtenberg, the famed Russian mathematician. The article left a deep imprint in my mind and I wondered as to whether there were other such techniques of quick mathematics. This led me to look for more insightful articles and papers. As I was preparing for competitive examinations conducted by various public agencies which almost always require consummate mathematical skills for success, I found these techniques truly useful. Little did I realize at that time that my incessant journey into the realm of quick mathematics had begun! I had taken to a passion that would be in my psyche for all times to come. These techniques worked very well and I cleared a plethora of competitive examinations. The more I practiced the techniques, the better I got at them. Very soon I was able to appreciate the deeper and subtle aspects of quick mathematics. I realized that speed at solving problems directly influenced the appreciation of the problems. And thorough appreciation of mathematical problems, every great mathematician would tell you, is the key to solutions. I also deem it essential to mention at this juncture that the faster you get at problem solving, the greater is your accuracy…. By reading this book, the students will be able to: learn quicker methods by observing some simple techniques; compare various techniques available on each topic; know the limitations of each technique; save some precious minutes in various competitive and school examinations by employing the quick calculation techniques; and develop their own tools in the field of quick calculations.’

This book is a teaching manual with accessible formats for learning basic techniques that apply to preparing for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentage, squaring, cubing, square root - with exercises and examples for each. He then proceeds to more difficult topics such as algebra.

Throughout the book Rajesh keeps the reader with him allowing the learning process to take place, reinforcing each ‘calculation trick’ with supplemental practice examples. For students as well as for anyone who deals with numbers this book is an invaluable addition to the library.

“Be a Human Calculator – Mere Observation – No Magic” is written with the aim of solving Mathematical conundrums with speed and accuracy. The book is written keeping in view achieving success in the cut-throat competitive examinations of which mathematics is an integral part.
The sheer numbers of the participants in any competitive examination is “mind boggling”. The vacancies are few. The examinations are set in the pattern where limitations of time play the biggest role in solving the questions. In other words, unless the participant knows to solve mathematical problems with speed and accuracy, success is remote. Even a genius in mathematics may not be able to qualify unless he adopts the shortcut methods to solve all the problems in the allotted time. The author has explained in the book exactly how to do it. The book is meant to cope with the Mathematics (calculation aspects) in competitive examinations in shortest time possible.

There are other books in the market on the same subject but none has dealt the subject in its practical perspective of speed and accuracy. Since the author himself went through numerous competitive examinations and qualified most of them, he could view very clearly the bottlenecks in mathematics where students get disillusioned and fail to achieve success.

The book is presented in a very organized way. It starts with some basic techniques and then gradually takes the students to perplexing mathematics. From simple additions it teaches square roots, cube roots, HCF, LCM and finally there are lessons of Algebra which are expected in a competitive examination.

I thank the author for bringing a practical approach towards quicker mathematics and give him five stars rating for the book.

This is a math book for students who have already learned the basics, but want to be able to get to the answers in a way without as much writing and calculating on paper. I would not recommend it to students who are struggling with the basics in fact finding as they need a strong foundation before they can benefit from these strategies and methods. These are not tricks to impress peers (though it might). These are patterns and strategies that can give math students a way of solving for answers without writing out long problems in small spaces. It can shorten time which can be an advantage during testing and assessments. There are strategies for basic math like adding and subtracting, but also ways to identify percentages and square root. Even algebra like factoring polynomials and solving equations have methods that are clearly explained and diagrammed step by step without being too lengthy or boring or even over the heads of students. Every method comes with an exercise portion to practice these strategies at a variety of difficulties. There is also a time frame given for the exercises so that students can see if they can complete them using the calculator in their heads. As mentioned before, students with a good understanding of math concepts can benefit, if not enjoy, this book and its methods. Gifted students can try it out the methods to see if they work consistently and if they can improve their time from traditional practices.

In order to clear a competitive examination, we need speed with accuracy. When it comes to Mathematics part, we do not get a second chance to relook at our answers as our precious time is consumed in boring and lengthy calculations. There are shortcut methods for faster calculations available at different sources. But it is difficult to find them all at one place, with such detailed examples, exercises, time targets and solutions. I appreciate that the author has done extensive research before bringing out the edition. The book, if studied and practiced thoroughly, serves its purpose very well.

If you are preparing for competitive examinations or are a Mathematics lover, this is a must have book.
Plus points: (i) Easy language, (ii) The author has cleared the concepts used in a particular chapter, (iii) Detailed examples, (iv) Exercises and (v) Solutions.

Minus Points: (i) A few typing errors.

Be a Human Calculator is (as one would predict from the title) a Math book. I was interested in finding out if it could deliver and I was quite surprised with the material inside.
The language is fairly simple (even if you’re from a social science field) and it’s easy to understand how it works. Obviously, it won’t replace a calculator but you get to learn a few amounts of tricks that will ease the process and make arithmetic a lot more simple to do. Rajesh Sarwast was a respected Mathematics teacher, so he knows what he’s talking about. There’s also something about the language used that reminds you that he used to teach. Mathematics can be scary, but in this book, it sounds more like a game or a competition, so it is quite entertaining for anyone who’s into brain teasers and logic games.

This book should be highly recommend . Me being a weak student in calculations always make silly mistakes in this particular part only .
Also it takes a lot of time in exams to do all the calculations . I even left some questions because of it. Some teachers in our school came to teach us vedic maths but they came for one day only . Let me give an example :- what will be 11×45
Take 4 /4+5/5 so ,11×45 = 495
I had interest in it from the day I learnt this method . This book is surely going to help me a lot as these shortcuts will save my time . Also I will make less mistakes because the calculation part would lessen. Thank you so much.

Be A Human Calculator by Rajesh Sarswat makes math easy. In a nutshell, you will quickly learn to do math calculations like never before. Many people claim to be a human calculator, but few actually are; if you are struggling with serious math exams, or just want to brush up on your math, this is the perfect book. With a table of contents at the beginning of the book, Sarswat lays out what to expect in the book. This in itself is a handy reference. He begins with the more simple calculations that even the novice can appreciate and moves on to more hardcore math problems for serious math aficionados. This is a must read if you are preparing for any type of intensive math exam, but will help those who are looking to brush on their math skills as well. This is also a great book to refer to over and over again. Highly recommend.

A wonderful book that I will reread many times!! I am a student and I love math, but I have always had a problem with a quick count of difficult equations. The book "Be a Human Calculator" is a real discovery for me. I read with pleasure and could not stop. All examples of algebraic equations are well and simply explained, you don’t need to be a math teacher to understand how to do it.
Rajesh Sarswat is a true professional, and I am very pleased to read and learn new knowledge of a person who has spent many years of his life creating his own technique.
I believe that by reading the “Be a Human Calculator” I’ve got useful skills and will improve them. Thanks to the author for such a unique work and for giving students and ordinary people a “key” to mathematics. I recommend everyone to read the book! I have a desire now to read other books by the author.

Some may find this book useless - who needs to find the square root of 34,284? But this book can actually make all the difference in passing that difficult class or doing better at work. Be a human calculator is all about training your brain to solve those equations that you once thought you needed a calculator for. The information is presented in an easy to understand way that makes is possible to digest the material, often times this is unlike traditional math books.

If you are struggling to pass a math class or find yourself in a career that requires you to think on your feet, this book can be a game changer in how you think about math. Put the calculator away and begin solving equations on your own time.

I am not very strong at maths and my enthusiasm for the subject is very low. So, with my dislike and weakness in maths I tried to be very open-minded while reading this book. Reading about maths in “Being a Human Calculator” was easy to follow. There were tips and shortcuts to help you digest and understand formulas and intricate workings. Of course, you must have a strong foundation in the workings of maths to be able to master the techniques. The book is also more geared to those who participate in competitions as the tips help you to increase speed and accuracy. I think for those who must master maths this book would be most helpful.

Technical compared to other paper-free math methods

I found this to be more detailed than some mental math method books on Amazon. I had to discard some of the methods since I do not know the operations well enough to check my work.
