I spend a lot of time coding for my job (and in grad school). So what do I do on vacation? Read a book about coding. So lame.
I wanted to read a book about the basics of a language primarily because I find myself in a position where I’ll soon be teaching some programming to others. I was mostly self taught, so I wanted to learn how a language is typically taught from the ground up. So I read this book more to learn about pedagogy than to learn about R. (I have much to learn about both)
3 stars bc the writing was choppy and I was actually confused about how to do things that I already know how to do. BUT I have some sympathy bc I can’t imagine how hard it is to write a book about how to code in a new language.
I was overseeing a project and the consultant we hired to conduct our data analysis became ill and had to go home, they did recover thankfully. I used this book and a few YouTube tutorials and was able to get up to speed with R in 96 hours. I have one three credit class of Statistics with Calculus I took in 1999 we used SAS then. So it is a quite practical book and prevented any delay in our completion date.
Fortunately I bought kindle version of the book at about $1. The book can only give you a "taste" of what R is. Nothing serious you can do after finishing the book. But for the price, I didn't expect too much.
Quite a lot of data for a beginner in the later chapters. The flow of the book is good and the basic concepts have been laid down in a good manner. All in all, a very good book.
