In the all-new Kite Shop Mystery series set in the beach-side community of Rock Point, Oregon, kite shop owner Emmy Adler gets swept up in a murder investigation.
Emmy is finally living her dream. She's moved to the coastal town of Rock Point, Oregon, and is starting a kite business. Strings Attached features her own unique designs, inspired by everything from Picasso to Matisse's colorful cutouts. Her spirits are soaring sky-high the morning of the grand opening until she stumbles upon a dead man washed up on the beach.
The body belongs to local chef Miles Logan, and the gash across his chest indicates he s been murdered. The sheriff suspects Emmy's best friend, Avery, who used to date the chef. Emmy is sure Avery would never hurt anyone, but her pal doesn't have an alibi for the night of the murder. With Avery's freedom and the fate of her kite shop up in the air, Emmy takes it upon herself to follow the string of clues and solve the murder before the real killer takes flight.
I loved it! And I am already excited for the next book in the series. Emmy was a bit over the top now and then but nothing that would have been really annoying. The coastal town setting in Oregon was beautiful (if it is OK to call it that even though I could not actually see it). And when have I ever rea a mystery with a kite shop setting? – Never! Great characters and an interesting mystery without ever being slow at any time. I highly recommend it.
Emmy Adler is flying high. She has moved to Rock Point and is living with her best friend Avery. She is also excited about opening her new kite shop that will let her creativity soar. But everything could get Blown Away after she finds the body of a local chef washed up on the beach. A man Avery used to date. A man who was murdered and somehow Avery doesn’t have an alibi for the time of his death. It doesn’t look good. Emmy decides it is up to her to string together every clue she can find to prove her friend’s innocence before the real killer flies up, up, and away.
This story starts off at a fevered pitch when Emmy finds the body on the beach in Chapter 1. From there it takes flight as all the evidence points directly to Avery. The author keeps up the brisk pace as Emmy tries to do everything she can to convince the police that Avery could not have killed that man.
The characters are super engaging but have plenty of room to develop in future installments of this series. Emmy’s mom is a true helicopter mom. Her whole life has revolved around her children and Emmy moving 4 hours away has her stressing out. So much so, she shows up unannounced the very first day with the family dog and leaving him there to keep her safe. He is quite a dog so Emmy is not to upset by that but she knows she has to keep her mom in the dark about the murder or she will be back to pack her up and move Emmy home. We also meet the owner of the other kite store in town and a handsome friend of Avery’s. I think these characters are going to be a lot of fun to follow.
When it comes to the setting, Rock Point sound absolutely wonderful. Yes, there is a bit of rain, but the views and the make up of the town sound like a place I would love to visit again and again.
This story is a strong start for this series. I wasn’t quite “blown away” but the winds are definitely blowing in the right direction. I am excited to see where Clover Tate takes us next.
Emmy Adler is living her dream, opening a kite shop called Strings Attached in Rock Point, Oregon, and living with her best friend Avery right on the beach. However, the morning her shop is due to open, Emmy discovers a dead body, that of Avery’s ex on the beach. With the police certain that Avery is the killer and the evidence mounting against her, Emmy jumps in to find the real killer. Can she do it?
I fell in love with the setting in the first chapter even with the discovery of the dead body by the end of it. The pace was off a couple of times, but everything did come together for the climax, and we got some good twists along the way. Emmy seemed to get angry easily, sometimes I understood and sometimes it seemed over the top. The other characters were a varied bunch and I enjoyed them. Overall, this was a good debut, and I look forward to visiting again soon.
Blown Away is the first book in the A Kite Shop Mystery series and a wonderful debut it is. The next time somebody tells you to go fly a kite, your first stop should be Strings Attached to talk with Emmy and purchase one of her handmade kites.
Emmy Adler has moved to Rock Point to live her dream and open a kite shop specializing in her own design handmade kites. The morning of the Grand Opening, Emmy and her dog Bear are taking their early morning walk on the beach, when Bear runs off to a collection of rocks along the shoreline and starts to bark. When Emmy catches up she finds that Bear has been barking at what appears to be a dead body. The body turns out to be that of Miles Logan, the chef at The Tidal Basin.
While getting her business off to a start, Emmy is living at Avery Cook’s house, they have been friends since childhood. Avery had recently broken up with Logan and the night he was killed, Avery had claimed she was ill and went to her room and since she was not seen until the next day, she has no alibi. When it is found that she was to met with Miles the night of his death and is reported to have been seen near where he was found, With Avery arrested for the murder and in Emmy’s opinion that police are not interested in looking any further, she begins her own investigation,
Emmy soon learns of an argument between some mushroom hunters and Logan, that Logan had plans to open his own restaurant which might lead the owner of the Tidal Inn to lose his business and that there were plans to use Avery’s property for a real estate development.
With the help of Stella Hart, a retired school teacher and local artist, who Emmy has hired to help out in the kite shop and from, surprisingly, Jack Sullivan owner of a rival kite shop.
I really enjoyed this new series and had me guessing until the end. It has a well-plotted story with interesting and well-developed characters. Looking for seeing more of Stella and seeing what might develop between Emmy and Jack.
I can’t wait for the next book in this exciting series
This is a first in series about a young kite designer who is in search of her Independence as much as work life balance. I loved that this cozy was set on the West Coast, in Oregon and I loved the references to Portland, Tillamook and even Sea Side. Main character Emmy is young, inspired and a handful. With a great best friend, dog and protective parents Emmy is trying to find her own way. In her new town, with her new business things look bright but a quick trip to the beach and a discovery of a dead body puts her welcome into a tail spin. A good mystery, great setting and an interesting idea for a cozy for sure! Out February 7th you may just want to pick it up and dream of flying kites in the Spring.
I liked this book. “Blown Away” is one of those cozies that is more pleasant to read than suspenseful. It does keep you guessing and the main character, Emmy and her room-mate do appear to be in danger, but somehow it remains a lighthearted read. Admittedly, you do have to suspend belief that there could be two successful kite shops in one town, but the need to suspend belief is a common theme in cozies, so it didn’t bother me. When in the mood for a lighthearted read with good character development, this is a good choice. I am looking forward to the author’s second book in the series, “Live and Let Fly.”
I am a bit conflicted about BLOWN AWAY. The west coast beach setting is nice, and a kite shop is a new "theme" for a cozy series, but I just not blown away (no pun intended) by this debut. I never warmed up to protagonist Emmy, finding her a bit too self righteous. Her nonchalant disregard for the law and her lack of thinking things through, all with an easily tripped anger trigger, make her difficult to like. The resolution of the mystery is what saves this book for me.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher and voluntarily shared my thoughts about it.
Readers are going to be flying high while they read BLOWN AWAY!
Author Clover Tate wasted no time getting down to business in this first book in the Kite Shop Mysteries. By the last word of chapter one, readers are introduced to six characters, and the murder victim is found!
I’ve never really been into flying kites, but I do love watching them and seeing the beautiful designs and colors. After reading this story I now have a bit of a fascination with them. Ms. Tate’s descriptions really pulled me into her protagonist, Emmy Adler’s joy of kite craftsmanship.
For a first in a series, BLOWN AWAY was very well done. As soon as I opened the book, this entertaining tale kept me reading straight through until the end. The plot was a real attention holder, with a mystery that held more twists and turns than a kite in a wind storm.
Blown Away by Clover Tate is the first in a new cozy mystery series with a theme of kite making. Emmy has moved in with her best friend in an Oregon coastal town and is opening her very own kite store. Her kites are a blend of her love of kite flying and her artistic flair honed by an art degree. Shortly after moving in with Avery, a body is found on the beach by their house. The body turns out to be Avery’s ex and all eyes turn to Avery as the most likely culprit. This was a fun cozy with a different theme that I’ve seen before.

Review:
Blown Away is the first book in the new Kite Shop Mystery series, and, unfortunately, I am not uplifted by what I read.
Emmy has followed her dream to the coastal town of Rock Point, Oregon, to open her own kite shop. As an artist, she creates custom kites as well as carries more traditional offerings. She is all set for her grand opening when she and her dog Bear discover local chef Miles Logan, who was obviously murdered, washed up on the beach. Eyes quickly turn to Emmy’s best friend/roommate Avery as the prime suspect. She and Miles have a recent romantic history, and the clues that are piling up do nothing to help Avery’s case. Emmy, confident that Avery is indeed innocent, does all she can to find the real perpetrator.
Blown Away is not a bad cozy mystery; it simply failed to live up to my expectations. The coastal tourist town setting is quite nice and sounds like someplace I would like to visit. With all its local color, stores and restaurants, I am sure I would enjoy spending a few relaxing days there. That said, there is a bit of unbelievability to the town (yes, I know that most cozy “towns” are not the most realistic settings), but I just could not come to terms that a small town could sustain, not one, but two kite shops. Perhaps I just cannot get that excited about kites.
Readers are introduced to a variety of characters that inhabit Rock Point. However, with the exception of retired teacher turned artist Stella and loyal friend Dave, I never really warmed up to any of them. I especially have trouble with our protagonist Emmy. Her blind devotion to Avery is understandable since they have known each other a long time and are quite close, but that loyalty feels a little unjustified as the story progresses and Avery keeps secrets (to her own detriment). Emmy has good intentions but comes across a bit self-righteous, has little regard for what other people think, does not think things through, and is quick to lose her temper…with everyone. And then she wonders why no one seems to like her very much? I found her to be an inept amateur sleuth who bumbled along until the truth presented itself. Is she meant to be funny?
Blown Away moves along at a steady, quick clip and is an easy, light read. The resolution of the mystery is what saves the story for me. The murderer’s motives and final revelations make it all somewhat worthwhile. I am not sure I will seek out the next book in the series when it becomes available. An unappealing protagonist and my lack of interest in the kite theme leave me wanting more. Much more.
New author, new series -- totally fun premise. I flew kites growing up and the series is making me want to do it again. The mystery had some nice twists to it and I particularly enjoyed the references to Watergate.
After preparing and hosting Easter, I needed a cozy. The premise of this mystery is the owner of a brand new kite shop moves to a new coastal town. On her first morning, while walking her darling Australian Shepherd, stumbles across the dead body of her best friend/roommate’s ex-boyfriend. The police arrest the best friend and Emmy, on quite the high horse, declares them incompetent and decides to find the murderer herself. Emmy in incredibly dislikeable. She moves to a local tourist town to open a store selling kites. She knows the town already has a kite shop, one she hasn’t been in since she was a child. Based on her juvenile memories, she believes her kite store will have a completely different clientele. (Really? There is that much business for kites?) She doesn’t even visit the store to verify her memories when launching her business plan. When she isn’t making assumptions about local kite retailers, she is making assumptions about others in town. She hears a snippet of gossip, runs to the police with it, declares them incompetent, and follows up on the gossip. She rather believe the worst about others before being sure, just to clear her friend. She is incredibly juvenile, opinionated, headstrong, and unlikeable. That said, the mystery is resolved in a bit of a hurried manner. It was easy to determine who the true murderer was based on how much or how little Emmy ‘liked’ the people. There was one point when I thought we were going in an interesting direction, but that turned out to be an affair. If the author had worked with that, she might have had a more interesting book. I won’t be reading anymore of this series. I definitely was NOT blown away.
The setting of a kite shop and Oregon coast, other characters, and the resolution of the murder allows me to give this first-in-a-series 2 stars instead of 1. Sometimes the first book is a little rough. I did not like like the protagonist, Emmy, because she was impulsive, rude, and rather self-centered. Her character made this difficult reading for me. I kept reading, because I did want to know who committed the murder.
I chose this book expecting to find a wonderful little mystery set in coastal Oregon. Instead, it was an OK, somewhat constructed, awkward run-of-the-mill amateur detective story with bits of Oregon tacked on here and there, possibly from research the author did and not because she lived there. I wanted the flavor of Oregon, and instead I was hit with something that felt more East Coast. The protagonist calls a gas station a "filling" station, a character is described as "Latina" (which refers colloquially in the US to P.R., we would say "Hispanic" on the West Coast), the protagonist has an excitable personality that comes through her dialogue but in a way that I just wanted her to calm down and be quiet, and the murderer is the one who was set up to be hated all along.
Normally first novels are amazing as they are distilled dreams of the author that they have spent years polishing before delivering to be published. This was not. It's not a bad book but it wasn't worth my time, not when there is so much else to be read.

Emmy has moved to the little coastal town in Oregon where her family had spent vacations. She knows som of the townspeople already, in fact, her best friend lives there. Emmy, an artist and avid kite person hopes to design kites and sell her creations (as well as traditional manufactured kites) to tourists. Just before the opening of her shop, she discovers a body in the surf….. The body turns out to be the chef at the most popular restaurant in town…. And also the ex-boyfriend of her best friend. Unfortunately her friend doesn’t have a good alibi for the night of the murder and there is mounting evidence against her. Although Emmy is to “keep out” of the investigation, she can’t help looking for the real murderer. ----- If you have nothing else to read, it’s OK
Emmy just moved to Rock Point, Oregon and is starting a new kite business. She is ready for the grand opening... until she finds a dead body washed up on the beach in front of her house!
Emmy comes off a little bitchy in this series debut. She wants to help her friend, but she is stubborn and difficult when dealing with the local law. I'm pretty sure all evidence she finds would be thrown out of court due to her breaking the law to get it. She seems to have no regard for how justice seems to work. The characters are interesting, but we don't get to know them that well yet. Story is entertaining but a little predictable. The series has potential and I am interested to see where book 2 goes from here.
A good cozy mystery, this story takes place in a coastal town in Oregon, to which Emily has just moved and opened a kite shop. When she finds a dead man on the beach below her friend's house, where she is staying, things go bad very quickly when her friend is arrested for the murder, since the man was none other than her friend's ex-boyfriend. The plot is complicated with a lot more: violent mushroom growers, several other suspicious town residents, arson, and much more. This is a good read and a good series beginning.
I enjoyed this story which is the first in a series. Emmy is opening a kit shop and living with her friend Avery. Emmy walks on the beach with her dog and discovers a body. Soon Avery is locked up on suspicion of murder, and the story evolves around Emmy's attempts to find the real culprit so her friend will be set free. There is a hint of romance and lot of people and events to keep track of. I liked it because of the fast pace and the lack of focus on sex and violence. I expect to read the rest of the books in this series as they are released.
Challenges: RRRCs April 2019 - National Kite Day/Spring setting (4); and, Create Your Own Readathon/Stacking the Series/Steeped in Books - Working List/Level 3f/Book 1. To cut the cord, a 28-year-old woman relocates from Portland, Oregon to a smaller coastal town and opens a kite shop. Her experience is immediately dampened by finding a body which challenges her to prove to herself and her parents that she can make her own decisions while at the same time setting boundaries in her mother-daughter relationship.
This starts off with Emmy moving in with her friend and starting up a new Kite Shop. Since she sales different kites then the other owner of a Kite shop she feels that she is not competition. She starts off ok and heads down the the beach with her dog later and ends up finding a body. It turns out to be a chef and someone her friend, Avery, was dating at one time. The sheriff arrests her friend, Avery, and Emmy goes around trying to find out more about Miles (the person who was killed) and clear her friend of murder.
I am a big fan of cozies and this is a great start for a new series. I'm also a sucker for beach books so this was a good match for my interests. Being an eastcoast girl, I enjoyed a west coast setting and a kite shop is a fresh location to base this cozy. Throw in a dead body, a dog and a big beach house and it was a fun ride. I wasn't sure who " did it" until the end. I'm going to be looking forward to book 2 in the kite shop......Please hurry.
Actually, I liked this one a lot! I thought the pushy mom character was great, that the protagonist didn't think the pushiness had to do with the mom's issues a very human thing, and found the culprit to be a surprise (I didn't suspect the obvious suspect, figured it was a red herring). The denouement wasn't typical either, but maybe more realistic? Never having captured a murder I wouldn't know. But I would read Tate again, I think.
I was excited to read this since I was going to a kite festival and thought it appropriate to read at that time. It took me longer to read than I had hoped. It was not a page turner for me and dragged on with too much repetition. I got tired of hearing about the mushroom hunters especially since they ended up having nothing to do with the murder. I continued reading only to find out who the real murderer was.

I liked the setting and the use of a kite shop but honestly the heroine was just too dumb at putting herself in situations dangerous to her and others. I know these type of books are always putting the amateur detective as more intrepid and intelligent than the police but she was not! I kept putting it down to read something else but kept coming back hoping it would get better....
I received this charming mystery read as a Goodreads giveaway. The author does a nice job setting the tone and background of the characters, their interactions and motives to a surprising conclusion.
