I have mixed feelings about Wolfsbane.

I loved the effective portrayal of emotions and feelings: Wolfsbane was tragic, shocking and heartbreaking, and I hated Kate Argent, and wanted to save Derek, and I was charmed by Stiles.

My problem is the storyline, actually – it is way too TV-show-y. Of course, it is a fanfiction of a TV-show... Maybe it makes no sense, still, that’s how I felt reading this story.

We huddled together
reading our fears
ultimately rewarded with smiles
not tears

There can be beauty after tragedy. There can be smiles and laughter, again. There can be forgiveness and love, even when you don't believe you deserve it. There is so much going on emotionally in this story and the crafting of it is well done.

Stiles is a deputy for the Beacon Hills Police department and partnered with Scott. Not sure how the Sheriff thought that would be a good idea for professional behavior, but hell to the yeah is it entertaining. It is during one of their obligations that they meet Derek. Things are bad and proceed to get worse in only ways that Beacon Hills can guarantee, but resourcefulness and conviction of character are things that Stiles will always have.

And therein begins the tale of Stiles and Derek. Skirmishes, missteps, camaraderie, and gentleness. It's a long road, but by the end, they've got time at last.

DW just keeps better at balancing the tragic and comedic; makes you laugh while taking the kidney punch.
“Well, how the hell do I know that for sure?” Stiles asks. “I’m not going to assume I know everything about werewolves just because I’ve seen a bunch of B-Grade movies!”

“Dude,” Scott reminds him. “I’m standing right here in the sunlight, and I’m not dead.”

“That is actually a really good point,” Stiles tells him.

Deputy Stilinski
Badass or death wish? The line is getting blurred.

And then there's the mental processing of trauma, that blankness counterbalanced by the hyper-situational awareness of surroundings that is so achingly rendered.

Derek shifts so that he’s sitting too. He doesn’t shake Stiles’s hand off. They sit quietly for a long time. Stiles listens to the sound of the neighbors’ sprinkler chuff-chuff-chuffing as the head turns. At the end of every rotation the spray hits the side of the Stilinskis’ garage. He can hear a dog barking further up the street, and someone a few houses down is listening to the radio. The faint strains of music slip through Derek’s window, carried on the breeze. A lazy, uneventful morning in a sleepy little street.

Henry/DW's writing has grown exponentially over the past couple years, and it has been fascinating to watch. How raw emotions like anger and pain have been transformed from a sledgehammer into chisel. How blunt messages have become songs.

The interweaving of characters' relationships here is really good. Stiles and Scott's friendship, Stiles and Derek's romance, the Sheriff and Peter's bromance, the Argent schism, and every other character that gets introduced is sewn in--there's a gestalt to the world building. The whole far exceeds the individual elements of the story.

Anyone terrified of the tags, they're not as bad as it seems. It's all off page and referenced in non explicit ways.

Thanks to Lisa for another gift, and the chickens! How she does it no one knows, but witchcraft is suspected. And to the Henry Survivor Club members who shared the experience--it was awesome. The interactions are a highlight for me. Thank you.

Big Thanks to the Henry's Survivors Club for dropping by the comments, reading was all the more fun for you being shared.

This story has ALL the feels.

It's not graphic and despite the premise is cleverly written so that our own imaginations provide most of the horror. There's family moments and scares, Sterek moments and the hint of another ship that I was surprised to find so appealing. No rush to smut, but little details make for huge victories.

I enjoyed it muchly.

I'm loving the extra bite to Stiles' humor and snark - the snark is strong in this one!

Scott is a werewolf.

That’s the thought that Stiles keeps coming back to, because, well, it’s a biggy.

I like the way some canon details are incorporated into the story, whether from the tv show or, in the majority, DW's in relation to some of her other fics. Things that are known in those other fics are only just being discovered here and that made me feel like I had insider knowledge lol

I don't think this qualifies as a spoiler so I'm quoting this passage. I love it lol, it says so much in an unexpected way and, of course, takes the mind to other... possibilities for anyone who's read other DW fics. ;) :D

Chris Argent is as hot as Stiles remembers. Like, he completely validates Stiles’s daddy kink. It’s the beard streaked with gray maybe. Or the way he looks his age, but also looks totally badass. Something about the guy just screams experience and authority, and who doesn’t love that combination? Stiles is certainly a fan. Okay, so he’s pretty much cooled off on the guy ever since he met the rest of his psychotic family, but he’s still allowed to look, right?

The little things. Small gestures. Single moments, a few shared words. There's a reason it's a cliche, because it's, it's all about those little things. Stiles and Derek are existing together thanks to a patchwork of those little moments and gestures that mean the world, they are the world.

And this DW being all accurate n shit...

Grief also isn’t static. Some days it’s just a whisper at the back of his mind, a bittersweet reminder that he loves his mom and he misses her and he’s sorry that she’s not here to share the day with him, but other times it’s a whirling dark maelstrom, pulling him in and drowning him all over again. The maelstrom days are fewer and farther between now, but they can still catch him like he only lost her yesterday.

I, we, already know DW can do awesome action scenes and she shows that again here, more than once. The sounds, the smells, the mess, the emotions, they're all there and I nom nom them up like my favorite snacks from Trader Joe's. Such good stuff.

In the end, it’s the imperfections that are the most beautiful.

Yeah.

Surriusly, this is one of the best of DW's TW fics. The approach to the characters and plot are different yet told in her typically fawesome ways. The ending is vunderbarrrrr. I love it.

Thank you, DW, for yet another fantastic story written at lightning fast speed, and thank you to Meep for hosting the read. :D

Amazing as always! Loved the Stiles/Derek bits in this one, the story progressed perfectly! No magic healing dick, nothing but time and patience can fix what Kate broke. I also loved the Peter/Sheriff bits, and am so thrilled to see this is now a series! Eeek!

Another deftly written story incorporating canon elements but not until a few years into the future.

Kate is particularly evil and crude; her depravity and hatred knows no bounds. Stiles unfortunately becomes a target too and once free, he and Derek have a long ways to go towards healing. Thankfully they have each other to lean onto.

As always great storytelling, great characterizations, great realistic slow burn showing the inevitable.

Strangely enough, and color me surprised, but I thought it was going to be a lot more angst-filled then it turned out to be.

I won't lie and say I wouldn't have liked a little more hurt/comfort and some bow chicka wow wow moments...but all in all it was an engrossing read.

Lunchtime WIP read along to brighten my working day...... well maybe brighten is the wrong word...

Here Be Spoilers

Fab story... mushy cute ending.. promise of other stories in this verse... including the John/Peter ficlet...

ETA - if Stiles is 20... and Derek has been captive since the fire... I make that about 14 or so years... this is going to be some major Stockholm Syndrome/PTSD if.. no, not if, when, he gets away from her and into recovery....

Not my favorite of Lisa’s fics but of course it was still very good.

I think this just wasn’t my favorite Stiles.

I love how she took what we know, made it different but still kind of the same and she did it in a way it still felt comfy but very fresh.

This is one of those stories that truly reminds me of exactly how tragic the fire really was. I think a lot of the times I get swept up in a story, know there was a fire, know it was tragic but all those thoughts just make Derek who he is and my brain doesn’t sit and stare at the fire.

I sat and stared at the fire in this one.

Heartbreaking and very, very hopeful.

Yes, I loved this. Yes, I thought it was a very interesting exploration of some very complicated interpersonal dynamics. Yes, yes, yes.

But the MOST yes: oh my god, I want John/Peter like whoa now!

Man oh man who thought Derek's back story could get MORE tragic? Lisa Henry that's who. Poor Derek, he's just so broken and I want to huggle and love on him, or let Stiles do that in my stead. This was sad and sweet and witty. I found myself smirking about as often as I was glaring at my kindle because of Kate (that bitch). Lovely read and I loved the characterization in this. Solid Sterek from a fabulous author.

I liked this fanfic but didn't love it, possibly because I am more of a steter than a sterek fan. Also there was a heap of plot and more cuddling than sex. Skimmed a bit too.

This and all of Discontentedwinter's Sterek fanfics are so much fun to read. I really should watch the show they are based on...But what does that say about the writing that I can completely enjoy it without having seen the series?

This one was a little darker that others I've read, but I enjoyed seeing Stiles all grown up and a deputy, and Derek as submissive.

I thought this was such an authentic rendition of these characters and to cannon, with one minor change that effected so many things. The process of Derek healing was handled perfectly and realistically And I loved the way Peter was handled! It didn't really change much about Laura but it really showcased how she did him wrong and how broken he was . Her fate really was her own doing

Wonderful as always DW.

Wow! I don't know why I usually end up with that reaction when reading a DiscontentedWinter fanfic, since I've come to expect anything by her is going to be fantastic...but I always end up blown away.

This was a great Sterek. I am so glad there is a follow up. I want to see more of Peter/Sheriff. I liked this version of Peter waking up. There was no magical cure for Derek. No jumping into sex before they had time to process and heal. It's hard to see Derek even more broken than normal. But it's easy to see how it could have progressed that way. Love Derek and Stiles in this.

This was such a unique version of how Stiles and Scott initially got messed up with the supernatural world of werewolves. Unique, and heartbreaking.

Derek. Jeez, there are just no words.

And Peter. Yeah, I loved how Peter was written, a version that was, as the story said, a victim. I liked the comparison of Peter's actions to the actions of wounded animals striking out.

This may have been from Stiles's POV and Derek's abuse may have been the intended focus of the story, but for me, Peter stole the show.

This one is hard to rate. It's a great story by an author was nails Sterek for me again and again. Creepy Uncle Peter just made things squicky for me and especially whatever the hell was blossoming between him and John. I'm giving this 3 stars but if you don't throw up in your mouth a bit because of Peter/ John then you'd probably rate this a 4

Read again. No less squicky for me. Sill good writing.

I love this take on Sterek, with Derek being held captive by Kate since the fire and Stiles saving him. There's a nice and slow progression to their relationship and Derek's healing. I also loved the interesting dynamic between John and Peter. There was a lot of action and just enough romance to keep it sweet.
