After agreeing to hunt down an ancient relic on an alien world, Mike Wesley may have gotten more than he bargained for: the mark of the hero which gives him the ability to respawn after death, ten times.
Now, between the deadly booby traps and the cute, cuddly murderous cat creatures that inhabit the world of Kelenia, he'll need each one of his new lives if he wants to make it back to Atlanta in one piece.
Okay, so this book was pretty cool. I especially recommend it for all you gaming nerds out there. I loved the world that Christian Terry created and getting a chance to be immersed within it was good times. Also, there were loads of times I burst out laughing from some one-liner or the interaction between Mike and Louis.
The entire story is fascinating and wonderful, but there's some issues with the editing. I'd say most of that has to do with comma usage. They're all over the place and it made the book difficult to read in parts. I had to take many breaks from the story because of it. And that is a disservice to it, because it's otherwise a great read.
This book was quite exciting and I think gamers would like this book too. For a debut novel, the author did a good job with this one. For a short novel, it was filled with thrill and action. The story and the setting were unique too and I love those aspects of the story.
The only downside of this book was that, since it was short I felt like there are some things that were a bit rushed. Also, I feel like Mike's character has more to tell than what was portrayed in this book. I kind of like to know him deeper, like what his past has been, why he reacts to his environment, people and events the way he did now and much more. I also wanted to know more about this world they were brought into. But it's also because of these that I'm looking forward to the next book. I'm hoping that the next one will be longer.
All in all, I can say I had a great time going through the adventure with Mike and Lou and I'm looking forward to getting to know these two and the other characters in the next books.
“The portal is near a vast underground river that can be accessed through man-sized holes in your thoroughfares,” Ariel said with a flourish. “You’re talking about the sewer, aren’t you?” “I do not know this word: sewer.” “Does it stink down by this river?” “There is the smell of putrescence, yes.” “You live in the sewer.”
3.5 stars
This book was had some subtle humor in it. I’m not sure if I am the target audience for this book. It seemed to be a play on video games. I don’t really play those that much but I understand the concept.
The story was easy to follow and predictable, a fact which I suspect was the authors intention. I mean, it follows a game story line pretty good. And I started to see how it could be a game itself. Like when they were trapped in that room with the walls closing in, totally a problem solving part of the game. The characters were something I could see in a game world too, the lovable but clumsy sidekick , the mentor and the love interest. Mike, the MC, was a pretty straightforward guy. Hard worker, didn’t like drama, and in the habit of helping those in need.
One thing that I really didn’t like was the fact that Louis’ name kept getting changed to Lou or Piggy. It was done so often that it really stuck out to me. If you are going to have a nickname, only use the given name in moments of depth that you want to stand out to the reader. Otherwise, the switching of the names becomes tiresome to me and holds no meaning. Three different names is too much.
I did love the cat though, wish we could have saw more of him. Also, I didn’t understand why Ariel’s daughter hated Mike. And when he asked, they told him it was complicated and suddenly Mike understood, but I didn’t. I have been known to be a bit of a dense reader though so maybe that went over my head.
The first thing I notice about this book is how it starts. The descriptions are excellent but the story is interrupted by additional descriptive words and repetition. If you can get past chapter one the writing gets better and the story pulls you in. You just have to get past that first little chapter to get there.
The rest of the story is extremely good. For being on the shorter side this book is very descriptive with characters you can truly relate to. The characters face internal and external troubles that resonate with you while also including those action packed fighting scenes that most people crave. There are a few typos here and there, but not many.
Overall, if you are willing to trudge through the first chapter and forgive a few typos then this is an excellent read.
I can’t wait to see where Christian Terry takes Mike and Lou next!
The cover of this book is what drew me to it. It's pretty weird which I find appealing. I thought the synopsis was intriguing as well.Come on, Aliens? Sign me up! Ten Lives is a gamer book. If you like RPG games then you'll like this book. It reads just like a video game with respawns, quests and treasures. I did think the book was pretty short and some moments felt rushed. I thought if some scenes were fleshed out more it would have been better. The characters were cool and fun to read and I look forward to reading more about them in the future.
This was a fun read. Christian Terry's writing style keeps a good flow, and laces the narrative and dialogue with humor throughout. I appreciate how the author also writes to a credible reader, giving just enough description to keep things interesting, without "spoon feeding" to be sure the plot is clear. I enjoyed the fact that the women in the book are strong, I'm hoping to see more depth to their characters in the next books! If you love game-lit, or stories of action and adventure, give this a read.
Originally, I bought this book because I loved the cover art work. I instantly wanted to read this book, and I wasn't disappointed. Filled with surprises and adventure, author Christian Terry, has created a world in which gamers and the highly imaginative will be delighted. Looking forward to the next installment!
