"Secrets are foolish creatures, I have learned. No longer do I wish to play with fools..."
Five weeks after the Great Fire, the village square in New Eden Township bustles with rebuilding activities. Hope begins to flicker as a new future rises from the ashes of deception. Yet for three newly appointed Elements--Ember Watson, Skylar Kane, and Rain Daniels--the many transitions to Project Phase Two expose dark secrets that demand sacrifices. Sacrifices, they discover, that may still destroy the very community they vowed to protect and serve.
Beyond the dome walls, Mackenzie Ferguson and Lynden Nichols refuse to feel powerless as Fillion Nichols stands trial. But, under constant surveillance, control and privacy seem as elusive as hope. Then Mack schemes an outrageous idea to help his friend reclaim ground by using the law to create an opportunity. The very same law, Lynden learns, that places her and Coal Hansen at risk of being forever separated.
A prequel to GAMEMASTER, book three in The Biodome Chronicles, this collection of novellas allows the reader to embark on a journey with Ember, Skylar, Rain, Mack, and Lynden as they untangle truth from lies and rebuild hope after betrayal.
**Novellas feature brand new content in a connected story and read like parts in a full-length novel**
JESIKAH SUNDIN is a multi-award winning Fae Romantasy, Dystopian Punk Lit, and Historical Fantasy writer, a mom of three nerdlets, a faeriecore and elfpunk geek, tree hugger, nature photographer, and a helpless romantic who married her insta-love high school sweetheart. In addition to her family, she shares her home in Seattle, Washington with a rambunctious husky-chi and a collection of Doc Martens boots. She is addicted to coffee, GIFs, memes, potatoes, cheese, kilts, mossy forests, eyeliner on men, and artsy indie alt rock.
I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This in no way influenced my opinion of the book.
This is a collection of short stories that focuses on one major and and five minor characters from the Biodome Chronicles. I will be giving a short review of each story in this book.
Ember’s story:
Ember has never been one of my favorite characters in this series. I don’t dislike her, but I never really connected with her either. She is very sweet, caring, and devoted to her husband Leaf. In fact, she spends most of her story thinking about how much she loves Leaf and lives to make him happy.
She didn’t seem to think this way because of brainwashing or force, she is a very capable young woman who thinks for herself, she just honestly loves loving her husband. Also, she and Leaf are dealing with the fact that she has been lying to him about some very important things for a long time so she is very guilty and worried that he has lost faith in her.
Leaf is a great guy and a wonderful husband who respects her so I get why she loves him so much, and if you like more traditional romance, this was a very sweet one. I just wish more time had been spent on Ember as a person instead of as Leaf’s wife.
Skylar’s story:
Not unlike Ember’s story, the theme of Skylar’s story was guilt. And if I thought Ember was being hard on herself for all the necessary lies she had to tell her friends and family, but she had nothing on Skylar.
Skylar doesn’t just feel bad for the lies he was forced to tell by his abusive father, he feels guilty for all the awful things his abusive father did. Honestly, I got a little sick of his guilt. His father was an abusive murderer and this realization caused his mother to go into catatonic shock. This meant that he was the only person left to take care of his two younger sisters. With all of this to deal with, his overwhelming grief and guilt because of a few lies he had to tell was too much.
Skylar is a nice guy, and I liked him, but liking him just made all the things he had to endure more difficult to read. Hopefully the next story has less guilt and more storytelling.
Rain’s Story:
Now we’re talking! This was the best story in the book so far. Rain is too adorable and I really enjoyed her point of view. She has a massive crush on Skylar, but she is also a normal teenage girl so she has a crush on a few other young men too.
I particularly enjoyed the scenes she shared with Coal. They have a flirtatious friendship that was very entertaining and sweet. But as cute as she and Coal were, there is no doubt that Skylar is the guy for her. (Also Coal is very much in love with his girlfriend Lynden)
Not a whole lot of progression happened in her relationship with Skylar, but it was nice to get to know them both a little better through each other’s eyes. And now Rain is one of my favorite characters. She is just that cute!
Mack’s story:
Don’t really know what to say about Mack. He’s a one of a kind character, that’s for sure. He’s a womanizer who really really loves his best friend Fillion and Fillion’s sister Lynden. He’s got a soft heart when it comes to the people he loves, but the way he thinks about and treats the women he hooks up with is a little gross.
Most of Mack’s story was focused on him trying to figure out a way to see Fillion. I mean this kid really loves him some Fillion! He came up with all sorts of schemes that eventually lead to him seeing his best friend who has been wrongly imprisoned. But I’m not going to ruin your fun by telling you about the schemes.
Mack lives in the “normal” world not New Eden so this story had a much different feel than the other three. Where Ember, Skylar, and Rain are chaste and pure, Mack is foul mouthed and promiscuous. Be prepared for some cursing and inappropriate jokes, but when he isn’t using those things to mask his pain or entertain those around him, Mack is a pretty sweet kid.
Lynden’s story:
Lynden and Coal are by far my favorite part of this series so I was happy I got to read a story that focused on them. Lynden is such a wounded young woman and Coal is such a sweet and gentle young man that their love is always a joy.
I was more than a little annoyed by Lynden throughout this story, but it brought her and Coal closer together so I ended up liking this story the most out of the entire book.
She suffered a massive trauma that hinders her ability to trust Coal completely, but he is just the kind of man who is willing to wait for her to heal. And healing is just what this story was about. It was about Lynden learning how not to allow the cruel and vicious thing that was done to her to keep her from true happiness. She fought for her sense of self worth and she fought for Coal, and that made for some great reading.
Final thoughts:
Most short stories in a series just feel like filler and don’t really serve a purpose other than appeasing reader’s desire for a taste of the series while the author writes the next long book. However this collection read like a long book. It was over 350 pages in all, was filled with content, and also allowed me to get to know some of the lesser characters who I didn’t care about before now.
The author does tend to include more descriptions of everyday and mundane things than I personally enjoy reading, but those descriptions are well written so I feel bad complaining about them. In fact, one of my favorite things about this series is how beautiful and descriptive the writing is. I just wish it were a bit less descriptive when it comes to the day to day stuff.
All the romances were sweet, and the mystery of New Eden and why it came to be is slowly unraveling. All in all, this was a great inclusion to a unique and interesting series!
Because of language and sexual content, I would recommend this book for ages 17 and up. There are some minorly descriptive sexual scenes that I would rate PG-13.
"Legacy and Elements, the incredible first and second installments of the Biodome Chronicles, are the prequels to this wonderful novella, Transitions. I loved the first two books dearly, but I have to say that Transitions is my favorite of the series, thus far. There is something so beautifully cohesive and transparent in Jesikah's exploration of her characters here. Short stories often force the writer into "getting there" in a hurry, when it comes to character exploration. Jesikah achieves this with a familiarity and effortlessness that can only come from these incredible characters having crystalized over a longer journey.
As ever, Jesikah's storytelling is superb. With each subsequent installment of this series, her writing becomes progressively more assertive and effortless. In Transitions, the characters seemingly wield her keyboard, possessing her as she types the scenes; Jesikah a mere vessel to their voices and actions.
I don't know where she is going next with these characters, but Transitions could eventually be seen as the looking glass through which these people became living, breathing entities. A benchmark, so to speak, for lovers of this series who will look to this novella as a guidebook for getting inside the heads and hearts of each and every one them.
I cannot wait for the next installment of the series."
Transitions is not a full novel, but a Novella filled with stories from several characters from the "Biodome Chronicles". I read the first two and loved the storyline. A whole community is sealed in a Biodome and living as if in medieval times. The owner/scientist is not a nice guy and his children are mixed up in the mess with the second generation of colonists. This little book shares more of each young person's, inside and out, personal story. Now I can't wait for the next full length book. There is swearing and sexual content though not explicit (on the outside of the dome), there is some mild violence in the series, though not in this particular book. I loved the whole idea of the series, and enjoyed the closer look at the characters. I give it four stars and am looking forward to finding out the rest of the story. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I don't even know where to start. This book honestly gave me so MANY feels. You officially ruined me Jesikah Sundin. I think I loved every character. Okay I'm not going to lie I loved Mack more. He always tried to make others laugh and his love for Fillion and Lynden ran deep. He would do anything for Fillion. Oh my gosh the marriage *secretly giggles* I laughed so hard on that scene.
Okay back to seriousness *clears throat* Transitions started out with Ember. It was nice seeing how her and Leaf interacted with each other after all that happened in book two. The struggles that she passed through especially with the people in the village hurt a lot. But, at the end of it all something special happened. Let's be honest we all know what i'm talking about. That specific scene when they found out she didn't have anything wrong with her it was just something beautiful that was growing inside of her. I think I literally cried. I didn't even want to go to the next story from Skylar's point of view. I wanted to stay in hers but guess what? That same feeling happened after I finished each story. Let's just say I didn't want to stop reading any character's point of view in this novella. Don't even get me started with Mack. I just enjoyed all characters. I'm starting to think Jesikah might have some special magic that makes you love every single character in her book, minus the bad guys.
By the way since we were just talking about Skylar...something really does need to happen between Skylar and Rain. How he thought she was ill when she blushed..*shakes head* he didn't realize she had feelings for him at the time. I felt like shouting it at him. Or slapping him but, instead I only could do this... So on to Mack...*giggles* I never really got to know him as well in the other books as I did with this novella. Getting to read from his point of view was entertaining he's the sort of person I would want to have around. What he did for Fillion and what I know he will continue to do is amazing. He loves him like a brother I dare say even MORE than that, but with zero romantic attraction. Mack keeps trying to save Fillion from Hanley. I honestly (how many times have i said honestly?) continue to keep hating Hanley. So that hasn't changed in the slightest... gosh what he continues to do to Fillion, "Kono Yaro" (that bastard). I think i might cry when Fillion and Willow reunite-no joke.
Last, but not least Lynden. Her story was heartbreaking how she allowed her dad to dictate how she thought of herself was horrible. At the end of it all seeing her set herself free was beautiful and Coal... don't even get me started with Coal. He was incredibly amazing, gentle, and caring with Lynden. The book cover is definitely of them, isn't it? I can't believe i'm almost done with this review. There are so much more things i would love to write, lol. Though I've got to scream... JESIKAH SUNDIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I let out a SQUEAL when I read your Author's Notes. Like seriously I wasn't expecting that and I want to send you a million hugs for it. You are an amazing author thank you for letting me read this masterpiece. I've tried so "hard" to not mention book three in this review. But honestly I can not contain myself from not mentioning it now. Four words: CAN'T WAIT FOR IT! I am patiently waiting. ;)
P.S. Jesikah I think I changed my mind about Willow being my favorite character. I'm in a debate between all characters. Though i don't know i'm starting to favor Mack. NO,NO,NO I can't betray Willow. You know what i just love ALL characters. The end.
This a collection of novellas each told from one of 5 different side characters! Ember, Mack, Lynden, Rain and Skylar. I loved seeing things from their perspective. I think it really adds some richness to the overall story. It's equal parts funny and full of feels. . . The narrator keeps all the different voices consistent through the series. He does a really great job! . . . 👉🏼 All the Quotes : Secrets were foolish creatures . "Aw, poor Mack," she cooed. "Does someone need a rom com and icecream?" . Between the alcohol and hooking up he had morphed into a Neanderthal. . He hated negotiating with the devil incarnate. But he'd made deals with lots of devils before him. . You set my heart on fire. . I vow to fight for your heart all the days of my life and I shall. . Love has little to do with romance and everything to do with honor.
Sundin adds dimension to her series with this companion to her Biodome Chronicles, Transitions. It was quite interesting to get into the heads of several of the supporting characters from this story, revealing more of the motives and pieces that have driven the success and failures of the New Eden Project. I especially enjoyed reading the perspectives of Skylar, Mack, and Ember, but felt the whole collection was cleverly written and such a kick to read. There were parts that melted my heart, parts that made me weep, and others that made me giggle out loud they were so hilarious! Don't miss this one if you are a fan of Legacy and Elements. I can't wait for the final book!
I have enjoyed reading this series since the beginning. Transitions brings to the forefront secondary characters entwined throughout the main narrative as individuals. The character highlights bring to life the different perspectives and motives that drive these characters. As mentioned in previous reviews, the interjection of different languages (French and Japanese) keeps me on my toes. Looking forward the third installment to the series.
Omg if I'd had to read "I am honored to serve my husband" just one more time. I was seriously thinking about either taking a hammer to my phone or gouging out my own eyes. Hammer to my phone being the best option even if most expensive option.
I don't understand what the point was either. Both Leaf and Ember worked hard that day. She has blisters all over her hands and still she is expected to take his shoes off for him because of how tired he must be? What about how tired she is? Her day hasn't ended just because she is home like his has. No, she now has to cook, clean and take care of his kid sister. But why not serve him.
Sickening. I'm surprised Ember doesn't go around telling girls everywhere "you'd be prettier if you smiled more". Because she was sure written to make it seem like all she is good for is smiling pretty so some man can be served by her.
Honestly I don’t know where to start with this book. It’s the third book in the series an it totally stole my heart 🖤 I couldn’t put it down if I tried. It’s a combination of novellas with different character’s POVs from the series. Seeing everything going on in everyone’s lives from a different point of view was amazing. I enjoyed every one of them. This series is turning out to be something that I didn’t expect an I love it so much. It’s truly becoming one of my favorites, if not my favorite series I’ve ever read. I love how different is it from anything I’ve ever read and like I’ve said before the author is a fantastic story teller. Oh and Mack, oh my boy Mack.. he gets his own POV in this one and let me tell ya, he’s a comedian! Really he’s a smart a$$ an I love it so much.
This series just keeps getting better and better. There are a number of stories from the perspectives of a selection of, until now, mostly minor characters, and their developing relationships. But each novella continues the main storyline, of the 2 worlds, the corporation's machinations and how disaster can stress a society. I misunderstood the title... I was expecting a novella, a short quick read, this COLLECTION was anything but! It is novel length, and not just a series of disconnected short stories, they all connect cohesively into a whole continueing story. I really enjoy this authors style of writing, and find it very engaging. Now I have to wait for the next one...hope she writes fast!

This collection of novellas takes place between the second and the not-yet-released (AHH!) third book of the Biodome Chronicles series. Each story follows one of the newly appointed Elements - Ember, Skylar, and Rain - as well as Mack and Lynden. It was so much fun getting into each character's head and getting to see more of their world.
This is a great addition to the series, and a good holdover until the third book, Gamemaster, comes out. I can't wait! :D
Secrets and betrayals abound. Sacrifices of grief and honor are required. Plans to gain independence are in the works.
This book is written in multiple POVs, but they add to the overall storyline and give depth to the individual characters. Intricate weaving of individual backgrounds to form the overall plot. Strong character growth and detailed world building, both within the biodome and outside in the tech-advanced world.
The third book of The Biodome Chronicles, Transitions, was so refreshing!
This book also has five POVs: Ember, Skylar, Rain, Mack, and Lynden. What I liked about this set-up was these characters each had their own little novellas, so there wasn’t as much jumping around narrators. We get to dive in to the mind of different characters from the series that we haven’t spent a lot of time with. There is a lot more time that passes in this book compared to the first two which was different too. Loved the romance in this book.
This book was absolutely amazing. I enjoyed reading the points of view of other characters. Having their point of view and better understanding them was very beneficial to understanding the world's described. Everyone should have their own Mack. I initially thought he was just a sweet goober, but he is so much more. He's one of the best supporting characters I've read about. Excited to read the last book, but also not ready for it to end.
From the very first page I was immediately hooked and the book kept me turning page after page until I had finished the entire book. It was a steady pace and always kept me interested. I particularly loved the build up of the storyline and it kept you guessing what was going to happen next. Im interested to see where the next book heads with this storyline. This promises to be an amazing series.
This is one series I think is seriously underrated. It's a great sci-fi fantasy and this collection of Novellas was great. I really loved seeing more of the main characters individual perspectives. It adds so much to the overall series. One more book to go. I'm excited to see how this one ends, although I'll be sad to see it come to an end.
Aahh! Jesikah did it again, i loved transitions! It was a lovely written book full of short stories on the different characters who appear in Legacy and Elements. I loved it! I can't wait to read the last installment of this series, so far this has been one of my favorite reads <3
I'm loving each book in this series more than the last. This one puts the focus on several secondary characters, giving them their time on the stage. Each one struggling to throw off the chains that hold them down.
I loved this book. It was a nice peek inside the heads of all those other characters we love from the Biodome Chronicles. Also, Transitions was a perfect title because every one of the characters getting a starring role in this anthology of shorts is going through some kind of transition in life. A great installment in the series. Now I can't wait to read the next book.
3,5/5 ⭐ The setup in this book is a bit different from the rest of the series. It is divided into 5 parts, each told from one perspective (Ember, Rain and Skylar each get their own chapters, followed by Mack and Lynden). Between some chapters or parts much longer periods pass than in the previous two books, so that by the end about 3 years have passed since Elements. Personally, this approach appealed less to me, but I do understand why it was necessary for the series to fill this book in this way. It really feels like a transition, in which at the same time a lot still happens. On the one hand, I liked the idea of following the story a bit more from the other characters' heads (also to find out more about their internal struggles and their growth as characters), but I did miss the other main characters throughout the story. Especially during the parts of Mack and Lynden, since a lot of time passes in these parts in comparison to the other three parts, I really wonder what has happened in the meantime in New Eden. Mack is, I think, my favourite character in this book. I admire how he can appear so carefree and free in general but at the same time so loyal and be looked upon with respect and can accomplish so much without others immediately noticing. Just like in the previous two books, a lot of pieces of the puzzle are dropped without you immediately getting a view of the bigger picture, but others become clear, which makes me really mega curious about the end of this series. (bonus point, one of the side characters is called Lana as well, it's always so much fun to stumble upon your own name in a book by accident).
I received an advanced copy of this book for review.
I felt satisfaction in this book as I finish it. It was a wonderful read.
The novella of the Biodome Chronicles which tells the prequel to the last book, Gamemaster. It has perspectives of the characters who played important roles in Elements: Ember, Skylar, Rain, Mack, and Lynden.
It was a sweet read and each story tells what happened to the people after the Great Fire in the last book. It also showed the issues they are facing as we head on and prepare ourselves to the last book itself.
Among all the short stories here, my favorite is Mack's. Between the sweet medieval and flowing read, his story will make you laugh instantly and make you hyped and will help feel the sweetness of Lynden's story.
This novella is fun to read. I can feel the pain that I will miss these characters a lot.
Am I ready for the last book?
I don't know but I wish everyone have their own happily ever after.
