Camaro Espinoza is "the deadliest female protagonist since Jon Land's Caitlin Strong and Stieg Larsson's Lisbeth Salander" (Booklist).
Camaro Espinoza is a former combat medic whose past is shrouded in mystery. Having finally achieved a measure of calm and anonymity, Camaro receives a distress call from her sister Annabel. Living a modest life in a small town in California, Annabel has become trapped in an abusive relationship with a man named Jake Collier who threatens to make her daughter his next victim.
Camaro rushes across the country to defend her sister for what may be the last time. And Jake has a sibling of his own, an ex-Special Forces operative named Lukas who is every bit as unhinged as Camaro is uncompromising. For all Camaro's stealth and wit, she can only last so long against such a relentless force.
As a pair of federal marshals pick up the trail, and a bounty hunter with a debt to settle closes in, Camaro's smart enough to know that standing her ground is the last thing she should do. But if there's one thing Camaro can't do, it's walk away--even with a freight train like Lukas barreling towards her.

Loved this – it was fast, thrilling, addictive and totally cool beans.

It has to be said that I have not read the first in this series but that genuinely made no difference, in fact it felt like it could easily be the lead in, also Camaro is a bang on main protagonist – loved her. I’ve seen the comparisons to Reacher everywhere, but I would ignore that if I were you – seriously, Camaro, she’s got her own game going on thank you very much.

ANYWAY moving past that, the main story involves a sister in trouble, a pair of brothers that ARE trouble, a hot headed out of control Marshall, various other players and Camaro. Who will take the lot of them on and not even need a sit down.

I love thrillers like this because they are truly involving, you rock along with the characters, immersed in every moment, then Sam Hawken throws the odd unexpected spanner into the works making you crazy, then you head into a rapidly escalating conclusion that is proper edge of the seat stuff.

Its not rocket science – it is an adrenalin rush of entertainment with some well drawn and compelling characters, a proper dose of storytelling and a beautifully deft touch when it comes to dynamics and dialogue.

Definitely recommended for fans of ye good olde thrilling thriller with huge doses of that x factor thing that no reviewer ever had actual words for.

Enough said.

Camaro Espinoza is trying to adjust to civilian life when she gets a coded message from her estranged sister Annabel. It seems that Annabel’s boyfriend Jake knows that she has some money and has plans for that money. Camaro goes to help out her sister but learns that Jake has a brother that is an ex-marine, Lukas on his side. But that is not all, there are others that are out to get Jake and Annabell. Camaro definitely has her hands full trying to protect her sister and neice.

Camaro is a kick ass woman that is a former marine nurse. She has training to heal and to kill and a soft spot in her heart for her sister, even if they are estranged. Of course she is going to go help Annabel. But there is so much more going on that is going to keep Camaro on her toes if she plans on keeping everyone safe.

I love a great female lead that doesn’t deal with nonsense. She knows what needs to be done and does it. This is a great thriller as you follow along as Camaro tries to stop Jake and Lukas. I have not read the first book or the novella about Camaro but after reading Walk Away I will be definitely be checking them out.

I received Walk Away from the publisher for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.

This is the second Camaro Espinoza novel by Sam Hawken who has also written several novellas and short stories which tell of Camaro's early life, her combat experiences and also the other situations which have shaped her and led her to where she is today.
Out of the blue she receives a coded message from her estranged sister Annabel, who is now living in Carmel with her young daughter, as she has gotten herself into (another) bad relationship with an abusive partner, Jake Collier and she needs Camaro's help. Camaro races to her aid with devastating consequences, only to have Jake's brother Lukas, an ex-marine, who has currently skipped bail on a murder charge, on her trail and hellbent on revenge. However Lukas has a bail bondsman, a pair of U.S. Marshall's and the F.B.I. all on his case, who are equally out for revenge for his past crimes.
Another great thriller from Sam Hawken which builds to a thrilling climax with lots of action sequences thrown in along the way. I found Camaro to be a bit colder and a lot harder to 'read' this time around but this added to the overall mystery that surrounds her and her past. There are also some great 'supporting' characters too and I especially liked Yates, the wily old bail bondsman, who forms a strong bond with Camaro and who we may read of again ? There is also Lukas, the baddie of the piece but he is equally matched by Way, the U.S. Marshall's Deputy, who is equally as bad but wears a badge but is also fuelled by hatred and revenge.
Hawken has always created strong female characters in all his novels and in Camaro he has created the ultimate female action heroine, strong, both physically and mentally, smart, sassy and totally focussed. The only other female protagonist that comes anywhere close to Camaro is probably Wallace Stroby's Crissa Stone.
I look forward to further Camaro adventures to see if she takes up Yates offer or if she goes off on her own solitary path.
P.S. - I don't know why this resonated with me but Hawken's descriptions of all the meals in this novel made them all sound delicious, even the oatmeal breakfast !!!!

Sam Hawken has just released Walk Away - the second book in his Camaro Espinoza series. I hadn't read the first, but Walk Away can absolutely be read as a stand alone.

Camaro? She's a former combat medic who knows how to fight. She never backs down or walks away. When her sister Annabel asks her for help with an abusive boyfriend, she's on her way across country without a second thought. After all, family is family. But that abusive boyfriend has family too. And he's even worse than his brother. What starts out as a simple warning off soon turns deadly - for a lot of people.

I loved Camaro! Who doesn't love a kick butt female lead? (Think female Jack Reacher) Hawken slowly reveals bits and pieces of the sisters' past. I wasn't too sure about her sister - she's 'weaker' if you will, and seems to have has a history of making bad choices and needing help to clean up. I really liked two of the supporting cast - bail bondsman Yates and Deputy Marshall Hannon. I hope to see Yates in a future book. But boy oh boy, Marshall Way is a piece of work. He's a loose cannon with a temper. Hawken has written him well - it's impossible not to have a visceral reaction to this man.

Hawken's plot is well conceived and things move along at a quick pace. Great short snappy dialogue to match. And lots of action. Walk Away kinda reads like an action film. And I can absolutely see it as a movie. I look forward to the third installment.

Life comes at you fast and it doesn't get much faster than a Sam Hawken novel starring Camaro Espinoza. Camaro returns in her second novel following on from the numerous novellas and stories Hawken has penned throughout the past few years. In this instalment, Camaro is summoned to California by her estranged sister for a family reunion that's more armbars and blood than hugs and tears. That's because Camaro's sister has fallen in with the wrong guy and wants him out of her life in a way that only Camaro can provide.

What neither of them is prepared for is that the boyfriend is the least of the trouble as his brother, Lukas, appears on the scene along with a couple of US Marshals and an eldery bail bondsman/skip tracer on his tail bent on revenge. Hawken pulls us into the web of characters and situations in brilliant fashion making you hungry to get to the core of the story.

I've read plenty of books with bad guys and they come in all shapes, sizes and types with some even being endearing and fun, but Lukas is none of these things and truly got under my skin. Deputy US Marshal Keith Way is not much further down the revolting scale and Hawken has to be praised for writing a pair of characters that truly get to you.

This novel is relentless and full of great scenes between the characters as Hawken brings the entangled players together. You don't have to have experienced Camaro before to get into this one and as a newcomer or a long-time fan I would highly recommend it.

I waited almost a year for a second book about Camaro. It is now revealed that she has a sister and a niece, who are in trouble and need to be rescued. Even more of a surprise is the fact that Camaro is originally from Los Angeles and no mention of her New York past is discussed in this installment. As expected, there are bad guys and worse guys, and all problems can only be resolved by murder. By the end, so much has happened it almost feels as though her sister's troubles were in the distant past, and we are so focused on finding Lukas nothing else exists or matters. We are along for the ride and don't want it to end.

I believe each book in this series can be read independently, but you would have a much better appreciation for Camaro's character if you read both.

Walk Away is a 'hoot'. Rambo, Rocky Balboa, and Jack Reacher combine in the personage of Camaro Espinoza. The 2nd novel featuring Camaro is a 'lock and load' shootup of a story. Leaving her charter fishing business in Miami, Camaro heads to the West coast to assist her sister, Annabel who is being threatened by a hood who happens to be her boyfriend. When he attacks Camaro, Annabel shoots him. Camaro claims she did the shooting. The dead guy's brother Lukas, who is a cop-killer,vows to kill his brother's killer. At the time, he is being pursued by 2 federal marshals, a 70 year old bounty hunter, and a handful of other law enforcement folks. Each has a specific reason for wanting to kill Lukas.
Sam Hawken has invented a gutsy heroine and former decorated soldier and places her in some dangerous and exciting situations.
The editors and type-setters for Mulholland Books and Little, Brown & Co. did a lousy job of right margin justification in the print edition. After seeing the ' sp aces' between wo rds in the first th ree or four chap ters, I got used to it. Very annoying. (This had nothing to do with my enjoyment reading Walk Away).

Family is not an important thing. It's everything. - Michael J. Fox

I love the character of Camaro Espinoza. She's an ex-Army medic that got a Silver Star, she's an exceptional boxer, she shoots straight, is handy with a knife, but first and foremost, she's a sister and an aunt.

So when she gets a coded message from her sister, who she hasn't seen in a very long time saying she needs help, she leaves Miami Beach and heads to California.

I've read all the other novellas and the other novel about Camaro. The last novel THE NIGHT CHARTER wasn't my favorite. It was still very readable but it was missing the spark that the novellas have. Well, guess what? Not only is the spark back but it's turned into a raging forest fire.

Camaro is not a frilly, feminine woman. She grew up helping her Dad fix cars and motorcycles and she learned to box, like her father and grandfather before him. She is a kick-ass woman - one that you'd want at your back if you were in trouble.

I read the other books, which include:

FULL THROTTLE (four previously published novellas)
SWEET RIDE (a novella)
THE NIGHT CHARTER ( a full-length novel)

and now this full-length novel WALK AWAY.

Great protagonist and great stories.

I received this book from Mulholland Books through Net Galley in exchange for my unbiased review.

I won this book on goodreads!
Carmen Espinoza is former combat medic and all-around badass. She lives in Miami and runs a fishing charter business She also cage fights.
One day she gets a call from her sister, Annabel, in northern California. Annabel needs help with her abusive boyfriend, Jacob. She wants out of her life. So Carmen goes out there to deal with it. Which she does.
Jacob's fugitive brother, Lukas, is not happy when he finds out.
Lukas is sick and twisted individual who's on the run from the US Marshals. He's a stone-cold killer.
He's headed out to California when he finds out about his brother. Now he's setting his sights on Carmen.
This leads to one great story full of violent action and complex characters that feel real.
I absolutely enjoyed this suspenseful novel.

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway and did not read the first.

As much as this book is interesting I could not finish it. The book claims to have a female protagonist but it just feels like the book was first written with a male protagonist in mind and then they just switched the pronouns.

To my perspective, the book also seems like it doesn't know where it wants to go. It seems like things are just thrown in to continue the story and inform the reader why some characters are doing specific things. It doesn't work. It just makes me wonder why this book wasn't done in their perspective instead.

I read about half of the book in two weeks and then gave up.

This book had lots of things that I like in a good novel. Interesting characters, a fast moving intriguing storyline and enough twists and turns to keep me reading. The main character, Camaro is trying to move on with her life, but receives a message from her sister, saying she is in trouble and needs her help. Camaro will stop at nothing to protect her sister from those who are trying to kill her. I did think the book had a bit of slow start, but it was soon made up for when it really got going and I had a least one very late night as I just couldn't put it down!

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

A reasonably good story marred by a ludicrous level of gratuitous violence. Nobody except a comic book hero/ine could take this level of punishment and get up off the ground. Making Camaro into a pseudo-male seems to defeat the purpose of having a female protagonist. Of course, Hawken could always take her upmarket and call her Mercedes, or make her tougher and call her Mac (truck).

A compelling revenge plot plus a kickass heroine equals a super fast, super thrilling read. Fills a niche in thrillers that's all too neglected: What women will do for each other for the sake of sisterly love. (Disclosure: I work for the publisher.)

This is the first Sam Hawken book I’ve read and it won’t be the last. I liked Camero, a strong woman who has a strong sense of family. Once I started I couldn’t put it down. An excellent read!

(2 1/2). Are you ready to rock? Because if you are looking for a nice, snoozy little read do not open this book! Things start off a tiny bit slow, but once Camaro starts her engine we are taken along for a wild ride. There are good guys, bad good guys, somewhat good bad guys and a really bad, bad guy. It all makes for big page turning fun. No major brain engagement needed, just a little bit of stomach resistance to handle the high speed of the action. I can't wait to read more about Camaro.

A superbly written entry in the Camaro series

I loved the three prequel novellas, and the Camaro 1.1 novella, but wasn't so hot on the first full length Camaro novel. But this entry in the series combines the tight writing of the novellas, and the greater narrative possibilities of a full length novel. Best of the 6 stories, in my non-professional opinion.

In this volume, Camaro gets (another) call for help from her sister. This time she is happily settled with a new name, a new family, and a nice nest egg in California. However, her boyfriend is abusive, and demanding more and more money. Camaro's sister is terrified, and unable to end the relationship without help. Camaro, of course, rides to the rescue.

Enter the boyfriend's brother, a serial killer, who is being closely followed by a US Marshall, and a bail bondsman, having killed the Marshall's partner and absconded across the country, leaving a trail of bodies in his wake.

Camaro is now in the midst of a war, where everyone is at odds with everyone else, and her innocent sister and niece are in harm's way.

From this set up, we get a ripping good story, which keeps the reader turning the pages right until the end.

This was a solid progression from the first Camaro Espinoza thriller The Night Charter as it takes her across country from her Florida charter boat business to Carmel-By-The-Sea in California where she goes to help her sister out of an abusive relationship. The ex-combat medic ends up confronting a psychopathic brother-team and their associated hoodlum friends while becoming unlikely allies with a 70+ year old bounty hunter. A pair of U.S. Marshals further complicate the ally/adversary boundaries.

I was unfortunately distracted by a continuous series of type-setting (is it still called that in the computer age?) errors whereby the first line in each cha pter was mar red by having the wor ds inexpli cably broken up by random spaces. You could let one or two of these go, but in a fast-paced thriller with multiple scene changes and a resulting 81 chapters, you end up being reminded of this lack of quality control at least 81 times (there were a dozen or so similar print problems scattered throughout further into the text). Maybe I was just unlucky to have a faulty print run. But points off for that.

Blazing Camaro

The second novel in the Camaro Espinoza series somehow managed to ratchet it up a notch. The stakes are always personal with Camaro but this time as her sister needs her help.
Camaro is no one note action hero. A grounded woman who lives by a code no different than the samurai of Japan. Her adversary has his own code that brings him into Camaro's cross hairs.
Pick up this novel. You won't regret it.
