His credits run the gamut from Superman to Star Wars to Scooby-Doo, and from Clive Barker’s Hellraiser to Looney Tunes. His comics for kids have won a Comics Buyer’s Guide Fan Award, and been nominated for an Eisner Award and two Diamond gem awards, while several of his stories for older readers were included in the #1 New York Times bestselling graphic novels Action Comics.
A couple of weeks ago, I reviewed what I thought was a collection of Teen Titans Go! comics based on the cartoon of the same name. What it turned out to be were reprints of comics based on the original Teen Titans series. While the book was really good, it wasn't what I was hoping for. Well, this time I got my hands on the genuine article.
From a run-in with the Tamaranean Flu to a not-so-friendly baseball game with the Titans East squad to a big-time Hollywood producer wanting to turn the Titans into reality stars, these were the type of adventures I had been looking for.
Yes, this current version of the show has a lot of haters. But I for one like both versions of the show. But I am a bigger fan of TTG! I love that the same voice actors are used. I adore how the Titans make fun of themselves. And Beast Boy is my spirit animal, Yo!
Sholly Fisch is one of my favorite all-ages writers. He has such a love and devotion to the classic DC source material while keeping his pulse on the new trends as well. Fisch is incredible on Scooby-Doo Team-Up and he did an fantastic job on these Titans books as well. Maybe he should write for the show?
With additional writing and art by talents such as Derek Fridolfs, Merrill Hagan, Lea Hernandez, and others, this volume was a delight. It captures the loony spirit of the show without being too goofy. Every page was funny and a joy to read. The young reader in your life will delight in these as well.
This was another fun read and continues the hi-jinx of everyone (or at least the denizens of Jump City) favorite band of teen superheros set on the West Coast. While I didn't find this volume as on-point as I did the first volume, I did ultimately enjoy it. What makes it a solid three/five, but very, very close to a four (a simple batarang throw away if you will) is the final story.
The tale of "TV or not TV" is so on-the-nose and so meta that it's hard not to love it. Seeing how each character would produce a show on themselves, the Teen Titans, is just delightful. The story is full of references to both the original Teen Titans show and Young Justice, as well as nods to old Robin comics and American nature documentaries. For anyone reading this review who also happens to be a fan of the original Stargate TV series, this final story is a lot like Stargate's 200th episode - a glorious romp that pokes fun at a franchise we love.
If you enjoyed volumes one and two, you're sure to enjoy volume three.
Again, if you like the TV show, then you will get more out of these than if you have never seen the show and are just reading it as part of the DC cannon. I didn't like this one as much as some of the others I have read, because it felt like a few were rehashing stuff we'd seen on TV but with a modified plot. And maybe they are all rehashing TV episodes, but my kids insist that the comics are different and having seen most of the TV series (or heard it in the background while making dinner) I tend to agree with them.
But it fits the bill for getting a reluctant reader to do some reading by choice rather than by timer.
I thought this one was really funny because in one of the stories the Titans swapped powers, and in another they thought weirder versions of actual DC shows (except Beast boy and Raven) for a TV producer! Robin thought of classic Teen Titans, Cyborg thought of the 2003 Teen titans, and Starfire made a weird version of Young Justice! I would recommend this to any fan of Teen Titans GO! and comic books.
This volume wasn't as fun as the last 2 but I did have a few laughs and fun with my kiddo while reading it. The best story by far was the last story because beast boy as a shark, especially a rabbit shark, was hilarious.
