Man on the Run

Rate this book
One man must prove his innocence while finding which friend betrayed him in this high-drama, action-packed novel from the New York Times bestselling author of the Family Business series.

Jay Crawford has spent too long paying for a crime he didn't commit. For ten years, he's been in prison, waiting for the right opportunity to prove his innocence. But when his family is threatened, the time for waiting is over. Jay just didn't realize that escaping would be the easy part...
To get justice, he'll need the help of the three best friends who have always had his back -- Wil, Kyle and Allan. But how long will Allan let Jay stay in his house if his new wife seems to prefer the sexy ex-con sleeping on their couch? And does helping Jay mean Wil finally gets pulled into the not-exactly-legal Duncan family business? As Kyle finds his loyalties -- and his finances -- stretched to the limit, who will he have to sacrifice?
A man on the run requires absolute trust, but Jay might just be setting himself up for the ultimate betrayal...

Definitely enjoyed revisiting some of Carl Weber's old characters. I haven't read those books in yeeeaaaarrrrsss and I still got little memory jolts hearing them recall pieces of their history. The most recent story with Ashley's crazy tail and Jay was the most memorable. Good drama filled read, well written as always and held my attention the whole time. And I see those Duncans still coming through for their family.

What a wild roller coaster ride! This novel is drama from first to last page. I appreciate an occasional drama ridden read that reminds that I should be grateful for the lack of drama in my life. So why the 2-star rating? More on that later.

Man on the Run by Carl Weber tells the story of four lifelong friends, Wil, Allen, Kyle, and Jay. Jay is on the run after escaping from prison where he served more than 10 years for a crime he says he didn't commit. He enlists the help of his friends to help him confront his accuser. Instead, more and more drama ensues and readers are left speechless.

Without giving too much away because that it totally not my thing, but this novel is just... too much. For some that is great and good, but for me, I was just exhausted after awhile. I knew that I would be in for a ride when I requested Man on the Run from Netgalley, but I am familiar with the author's name and I was sure his writing would be on another level. Sure, there would be some crazy, predictable drama, but I wanted more.

If I based all my reviews and ratings based purely on entertainment, Man on the Run would be a "5". Instead, I want more from my novels. I want strong character development, descriptive emotions, not simply Love and Hip-Hop snippets. This novel is written similarly to an hour long episode... no joke.

Sorry Mr Carl Weber, Man on the Run was not my cup o' tea. Although I did relish in the drama and mystery while looking forward to the twists and turns abound, I was not happy with the lack of character development. I wanted to read a novel with people I cared about but instead... everyone here was kinda low-down. Makes me wonder which one of my friends put that knife in my back I can't seem to get out.

FYI- If you're an avid Carl Weber reader, you'll enjoy how this book is linked to his LC Duncan "Family Business" books.

This was a well-written novel, which I didn’t expect anything less from Carl Weber. I give this book a 5 out of 5 Star review. This is a novel about four best friends, that are more like brothers. This is a story about what true brotherhood looks like. The story deals with brotherhood and REAL friendship; family is not always about being blood; fighting for what you believe in; the pride of a man and understanding that it’s not always a bad thing; and how criminalized behaviors can destroy not only your life but the lives of others around you. You have four best friends that may not always see eye to eye, and they may even argue at times to the point of almost coming to blows, but in the long run each one of them would literally take a bullet for one another. The title of the novel provides you with a sense of what the story is going to be about with one of the brother’s being on the run. You don’t have to read long into the novel to understand this about the title. One of the friends coming back after ten years of being away, causes a ripple effect on the other best friends that will forever change the lives of those three friends. This book is a classic example of “you can’t win for losing” or “if it can go wrong, it will go wrong”. Although the brotherly bond is tested, the bond remains strong throughout the novel…even up to the end of the novel, which has a very surprising ending. The flow of the storyline was just right, with the storyline being perfectly fleshed out. It will even have you wanting more content as you read the very last sentence. I highly recommend this book…this was a great read in my opinion!

I think 'Man on the Run' may be the 7th novel I've read by Carl Weber. Mr. Weber is a storyteller. He understands character development and how to engage readers from a simple plot. The stories I've read are about simple people, families or friends that come together to aid in arduous situations.

In 'Man on the Run' again Mr. Weber utilizes friends to aid his protagonist in a difficult situation. In doing so you see the repercussions of their actions and how it impacts everyone in their circle negatively. Jay Crawford is a complex man. He has a loyal group of homeboys that you learn aren't all loyal. Some help him blindly and others hesitantly. I found learning about difficult situations and reading how they will play out kept me engaged, At the end I was rooting for Jay and hoping for the best for all involved. It was a fantastic read and I definitely recommend it.

I'd like to thank Netgalley and Grand Central Publishing for the opportunity to read and review 'Man on the Run'.

This was a bittersweet read for me. Before I found Gay Romance, Carl Weber's writing use to be my auto buy and read. I loved his stories. He was my favorite writer for a longer time. It's been more then 5 years since I converted to Gay Romance. It's not the sex that attracts me, it's the writing and feelings that I get with reading these stories. This book felt like coming home. A few of the characters are from my favorite book by him "Married Men", ten years ago I feel like in love with this group of guys. As much as I enjoyed it, it felt off. I didn't fall in love with the writing automatically. At times if felt very pedestrian when reading it. I hope this is the opening I need to come to this author. It's been a few books that he's released side my departure but I see no reason not for me to backtrack to his with.

There are many stories about girl friends sticking together and helping each other out, so this book, with a group of 4 men who are long time best friends, was a breath of fresh air. Not crazy about the underlying theme of women falsely accusing men of wrongdoing, but the bond between these 4 men and the lengths they go to in order to support and help each other was interesting. 6 out of 10.

It's been a decade since these characters surfaced and they didn't disappoint. Even a decade later, these guys still got some chaos with them. Some of them have grown and some are still the same which made for a good read

So...as a huge fan of the married men characters I was so excited to find out about this book months after it was released. However I have to say that I am very disappointed in Mr Weber who seems to have a sudden case of amnesia when it came to the characters he had developed so long ago. I hate to nitpick but the inaccuracies in the men's family and with other life events completely absent, I can't help but point them out:
Kyle had previously 3 daughters called Jewel, Jade and Willow. Now he's down to two one called kim. Jay had two daughters called Tiffany and Lashawn with ex wife kenya and son Jason with Tracy, the love of his life. Now their names are Stephanie, Kiana and Jordan and Jay has not seen Tracy for two years and is now engaged to someone else . Allen had been married to his longtime sweetheart Cinnamon who had a son Evan and he had custody of his ex wife Rose' s son Jonathan who had sickle cell anaemia . Now Allen is married to Cassie and there's nothing about his previous family?
And finally Wil who has pretty much stayed the same with wife Diane and two kids although not mentioned by name(Teddy and Katie ) but no major update.

Well I know it would seem that I didn't enjoy the book because I did as I have a soft spot for these men and their friendship which is brilliantly played out in their typical ride or die style. However I am a stickler for sloppy memory and therefore it made the chapters with the children hard to read while trying to remember they weren't some extra children written in to throw you off.

Anyway I recommend for the nostalgia and the twists and turns for the married men and the man on the run!!!

Wow! Breath taking. This book is a great read on ride or die friendship. After 10 years of being locked behind bars his determination set him free. His ride or die friends kept his secret and was willing to jump over a river bank for the sake of friendship. The ending took me by surprise but I'm sure the new man on the run will surfaces again. Lisa got off too easy, not to say she would have deserved what Kyle had planned for her, but she should have never came between a man and his life time friends. Cassie on the hand got what she deserved. It doesn't pay to gold dig and use people to get what you want.

Carl Weber delivers another jaw dropping, page turning storyline full of character development that brings the characters to life. Many lessons can be learned from this five star read. I recommend this five star read and look forward to reading more from Carl Weber.

This was a quick and entertaining read. Not any great literary success that Carl will get any awards for. But as usual it has his wonderful humor, issues that are quite believable and that many people can relate to. We should all be able to relate to @ least ONE relationship issue within the book, whether it be between friends, lovers or acquaintances.

I liked the relationship between the 4 friends. What I did NOT like is that there was not ONE positive female character! WHAT was that about??? All the women were on my last nerve! I was quite baffled as to the divorce papers that Lisa served Kyle swiftly. It was like I missed something that was going on in their relationship. Kyle's mental illness came out of nowhere. He could not have missed being bi-polar all these years. To have these friends that have been so close this long and NO ONE noticed that type of behavior left me quite skeptical.

The audiobook was good because it had different people reading all the male characters. Not all people do that with their audiobooks, so I'm glad he took the time to do this. As I previously said, this was entertaining. It's not anything that I would really recommend to anyone I know unless they just wanted a quick read on a plane or they were traveling.

I received this novel as an ARC. Will, Jay, Kyle, and Allen are best friends and have been for quite some time. They have a bond that not even time and distance can break. They are all dealing with personal demons that threaten to sink them all. This novel focuses on the complexities of family and friendship and the angst of holding everything together in the midst of unsettling times. What I love about this book is the ability of the author to use characters to flesh out the story. I was thoroughly entertained. What I was little perplexed about was the way he choose to conclude the novel, but knowing the author, he is setting the scene for another great read. I enjoyed this book as I have with all of his others.

I don't know if I could provide shelter for one of my friends if he was on the run from the law. Jay was convinced of his innocence and put his friends at great risk. Also, never marry a woman sixteen years younger than you. Allen found out the hard way about that. I love the Family Business novels but this was less about the Duncan family and more about Jay trying to clear his name. Will's initial revulsion towards Uncle LC was lessened by his need for a job. It was a quick read.

I belong to a club of readers and many of them were vouching for this book. Several times I saw that it was more encouraged to read than some other hot ones that dropped close to this one. I gave it some time before I dived in.
I have read a few of Weber's books. His best series is The Family Business but I liked The Choir Director as well. I don't think I read part two yet. I tried to read another one about a "big" girl... I didn't like it. For me, he's not solid all the time. I also think his sex scenes are well... Nasty. They don't evoke the passion that I think he goes for.
So this story was boring. There were a few great moments and then it would fizzle, and then there were a few great moments and then they would fizzle. The pace didn't pick up until chapter 32, but there are 60plus chapters. I'm not sure that I liked Orlando and LC being supporting characters. I don't think it added anything and Orlando is one of my favorite of his characters.
The subplot was soooooo contrived. I mean it didn't make sense at all to me . It was almost as if he pushed this subplot to nod to the gay community or maybe state his own personal opinion, of which we already know. He's made that clear. I like stories to just flow and I don't think this one did. I mean the subplot took up so much of the story only to get to the resolution of it and his daughter say she never wanted to be a teacher??? That's not really a spoiler.
So then the very end was like what?? This is dumb. I gave it s 3 because, I did like Jay a little and I did laugh some but the story was so disjointed it needs a 2 star. Sorry. He's obviously going to write another installment and the whole thing with Will and the direction they he's going. Idk. Meh.

So true fans will know the description is not correct because all through the book it says 10 years. The book is the latest from the A Man's World series, but it actually picks up right after The Family Business 2 with guest appearances from the Duncan family. True fans are very familiar with the Duncan family and the fact that there is a relation with one of the friend's from this book. There are also guest appearances and references from Mary B. Morrison's Soulmates Dissipate series since the two writers did a collab on at least one of the books in that series. Four men have been besties since childhood. Will they stay that way after everything that is happening? False accusations have to be proven wrong. Many will be affected by the issues, but an unexpected turning point will come to one at the end hinting at a continuation of the series. Multiple crazies in the book will keep you guessing the whole time who is causing all the problems and snitching. A great read but the accuracies are off from the past books. True fans do not forget the order of events and what happened.

Loved this book. Great sequel to Married Men. Kyle, Wil, Jay and Allen best friends always looking out for each other.
When I read "Married Men" Wil was there and after reading Family Business didn't put it together that Wil was a Duncan. It was really nice to read about LC and Orlando.
While reading "Man On The Run" couldn't remember why Jay was in prison and on the run, as I got more into the book it finally clicked what happen that landed him in jail for 10 years.
The police that were after Jay were nothing but a nuisance, could never find Jay he keep alluding them and was always right under their noses.
Ashley was a mess she should've been in jail instead of Jay. She had Jay arrested for sexually assaulting her which was a lie and he was found guilty and sent to prison.
Allen, ended up marrying a stripper named Cassie and none of his friend knew what she was until she and Jay smoked marijuana and she tried to come on to him and later informed Jay that she was a stripper. Cassie lied to Allen after he confronted her about coming onto Jay, and called the police and stated that Allen had abused her and Allen went to jail and had to be bailed out by Kyle. Allen hired a undercover hit man to kill Cassie but later changed his mind.
Kyle seemed to had it all together and his wife Lisa was so against Jay but I love me some Jay.
So now instead of Jay being on the run it is now Kyle. Had no idea that Kyle was bipolar and didn't remember anything he did including hiring a hit man to kill Lisa after she filed for divorce. The hit man that Kyle hired was a undercover cop that Allen met in jail and later arrested Kyle.

Waiting patiently for the sequel to "Man On The Run".

A Jaw-dropping Suspense with A Surprise Twist

What a story, which begins with a bang, figuratively speaking. The author presents a well-written, plot-driven narrative with prominent, likable, scheming, vindictive, and bungling multi-racial characters, along with great dialogue and descriptive settings. As you delve into the story, you learn more about the other players: Kyle, Jay, Allen, and Wil. The plot centers mainly on Jay Crawford, who swears he is innocent and escapes from federal prison. Yet, there is more to Jay than meets the eye. The other three characters keep the story moving, each with their own expressions, exposing some corporate intrigue, family secrets and lies, envy, lust, sex, revenge, blackmail, and deception. There are various twists and turns, with a surprise ending that will throw you for a loop, leaving us with the following message: money talks and more money talks.

This is a story about the closeness and the complexities of friendship. Four friends whose bond goes back to high school come together to help protect one of their own. 10 years prior Jay is accused of raping his girlfriend and sentenced and sent to prison. Jay has escaped custody and is now on the run. With nowhere to go he turns to his three friends to harbor him while he tries to find evidence to clear his name. Not all of his friends are convinced that he is innocent. As always, Weber developed a host of supporting characters who all seem to have their set of personal issues going on. The story has all the elements of a good read with drama, lies, murder, secrecy and a surprise turn of events. I do not want to give too much away, but if you are a fan of Carl Weber you will not be disappointed. Hope you enjoy.

I enjoyed this audible version of "Man on the Run" because both male actors were very expressive in voicing their characters. It seems Jay had spent ten years in jail on rape charges but escaped from prison. His accuser finally admitted she lied just to muck up his life and he was exonerated. I could visualize the scene on the courthouse steps when Kyle gets arrested for paying an undercover cop to murder his wife. I had no idea he was a snake and wanted his wife out of the picture.

My least favorite character was Cassie, a former stripper. Her hot tail was ready to sex her hubby and his buddies in order to stay living the good life. She was the wife from hell that Kyle wanted out of the picture. Now Kyle has escaped from custody with a new identity and will be the next Man on the Run.

I loved this book from the first word. I did not read Married Men prior to reading this book but it wasn't really needed to read this book.

The story was fast paced and as always, I love and live for any Carl Weber book that mentions a Duncan.

I would have given this book 4 stars but ultimately I gave it 3 stars because the ending seemed rushed. Also there were plot lines that weren't fully explored. For instance Will, his wife and him embracing being a Duncan and all it entails. I wanted to know how Jay's daughter Stephanie was able to foil the blackmail situation. There were a few other things that were unresolved but overall this was a good book.

Carl Weber will always be one of my go to authors.

I don't think I've ever given a book a 2 star review and to be honest I thought about giving it 1 star. All these 5 and 4 stars were misleading because this book lacked cohesiveness. Each chapter was a bunch of jumbled drama that was poorly strung together. The sub characters had way too much going on. The title was called man on the run and was supposed to be about Jay clearing his name. While that was in motion each sub character had so much drama that it clouded the real plot of the book. The author seemed to want readers to understand how easy anyone could become a man on the run. Unfortunately it was poorly executed. There were too many twists and turns and we didn't get to know any of the characters. If I am not attached to the characters then it is a miss for me.

What... I just finished previous book with series and names are fresh in my mind. How did Kyle have a daughter named Kiki when I recall his daughters names as jewel, jade and willow. Even though it's been ten years, there are some inconsistencies.

Jay had a son, Jordan, which was by Tracy in previous read. But he wasn't born then... Just knew that he would have a son.

Wondering who is Casey with Alan since I thought he'd be with cinnamon after rose... He still is dumb dumb dumb.

Another inconsistency with Kyle because he already divorced Lisa in other novel, no saying married twenty years, no way.

Too much drama for my tastes.

Will see if I can get done in two days.

Usually, the night before your wedding is supposed to be an exciting time for you, and the only thing you're worried about are pre wedding jitters. However, for Jay Crawford,he's got a much bigger issue to deal with. His issue? He's arrested for a crime he didn't commit. Now fresh out of jail after 15 long years,he's determined to clear his name and to reconnect with his family. To do this,he also has to reunite with his old crew. Can he get justice? Are his friends really his friends? What will his family think of him? Read it and find out! This book definitely kept me guessing, another fun read!

OMG !! A must read.

Man on the run was a page turner I could not put it down, I read this book in less than 12 hours. I really enjoyed reading about the the four best friends from Married Men. I love the way Carl incorporated characters from the family business and the mention of one of his other big characters from the church series. I was hoping Carl and Mary could right the sequel to She Aunt the one together but this was a very good follow up. Great job Carl Weber you never disappoint.

Good Read!!
Kyle,Jay,Wil and Allen love their friendship (bromance ) no matter good or be they stick together. Thank God Cassie is out of Allen's life she was only using him. Jay fought a hard battle but he won his life back and his kids. Kyle never thought he would fall off the deep end and his wife should have keep her mouth shut and knew something want right about Mr.Biggs now Kyle is on the run. Wil didn't like his Uncle LC but I'm glad that changed but his Uncle always came to the rescue let Orlando said you always have family. These 4 guys were not just friends they were family.

Lots of Drama

I couldn’t put this book down. Kyle, Wil, Allen & Jay were 4 buddies. Jay was accused of rape, he broke out of prison & for most of the book he was on the run & even dressed up as a woman to keep the feds from finding him. He went through hell to keep from going back to prison. Among the buddies there was a possible divorce, a solicitation for murder, a bipolar diagnosis, an adulterer, a kidnapping, an appearance by LC Duncan & his son Orlando & more. You will truly enjoy this book!

Great read. I chose this book for my bookclub not just because Carl Weber is my favorite author but the reviews were great. In true Carl Weber style of telling stories! Ending was totally unexpected. If you are thinking of this as a bookclub read I dressed up in a prisoner costume (hubby's old halloween costume) and had a "lineup" height chart with photo props and had each member take a picture. It was a great gathering to say the least
