This was a great read, and I'm sorry to see this series ending.

This book picks up about a year after book 1. General Riven is back in the Otherworld trying to track down her errant father before he can get up to more mischief and mayhem. Caden is on the throne back in Neospes so our couple is separated by loyalty and duty. However, old foes have arisen from the ashes and are attempting to destroy everything the king has been painstakingly rebuilding.

One of the things I enjoy most about this series is the superb tech - it's creative, well developed and consistently built and described in a way that makes it understandable and credible. It's more tech-heavy than most other books in this genre but I think that helps make it stand-out from the crowd. The worldbuilding, in general, is imaginative, well-thought-out, and well written.

I adore General Riven. She is one bad-ass ninjata-swinging cyborg warrior! She kicks some serious butt in this book and I loved all the action and fight scenes. Having indulged her human side in book 1, and fallen for Caden, she struggles at times to keep her emotions in check. Especially when she finds out what Caden has agreed with a neighboring nation in return for their help in defeating their enemies. I don't think I would have liked Riven as a character if she didn't have this softer, more emotional, more human side. She was well-rounded.

Caden is just, ah, swoon, a great guy! I love his confidence and his sacrifice and how much he loved Riven when she turned gung-ho. Rather than feeling inferior, as a lot of guys might, he thought it was hot!

It's easy to tell from the title who the main villain is, so it was no surprise when he showed up seeking vengeance. Parts of the plot were predictable in that regard, however, as the story progressed more tension and suspense was added and it soon became difficult to tell who could be trusted.

The pacing was off at the start of the book and it was slow and dragged in parts. But the second half more than made up for that, and the action ramped up a notch or two. The last third was nailbiting and chock-full of 'edge of the seat' suspense and intrigue. Awesome!

I enjoyed the writing and it was well edited.

I was a little surprised when I got to the end to see that it appears to have concluded. I definitely think there was enough mileage to stretch to another book. I'm actually sad to say goodbye to Riven and Caden as I enjoyed their characters immensely. I would recommend this book to fans of sci-fi/dystopia/paranormal romance.

Thanks to the publicist and publisher for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. This review will appear on my blog on May 30th: http://myyanabookobsession.com

I will have to re-read it again to get a better understanding of it. Riven is back and has to save Neospes from the lizard's attack. She will have to work with Danton, her father that made her half human half machine. But things get more complicated when all enemies come back and new alliances are forged.

I loved The Almost Girl, and this sequel is just as amazing, if not better! When a fast-paced plot and in-depth character development happen together seamlessly, it's a gem of a book. Read The Almost Girl now, and when The Fallen Prince is released, pick it up!

This has to be one of the most difficult reviews that I have ever had to write.
The reason?
My great respect for this book's author.
I must also say that my review is based on having only read The Fallen Prince, and not its predecessor.
The story itself is not my problem. My issue lies with the fact that so much of this book made me feel as though I was rereading Fuse by Julianna Baggott. Though the book is well written. The story is one that, to an extent, I have read before.

2.5 stars, rounding to 3. Though it displayed a solid writing style and was well-paced, The Fallen Prince felt a bit cliche and shallow. Read my full review of this novel here.

Now that was one wild ride! I really enjoyed The Almost Girl, the first in the Riven Chronicles, and I was excited to read what happens next in The Fallen Prince. It shared with readers a fantastic world and a heroine worth admiring. With the way things ended in the first book, I knew that we would be in for an adventure. The first book takes place mainly on Earth, but this second book is set more in Riven’s home world. Amalie Howard does a great job of creating a world that is both terrifying and colorful. When you read the descriptions of the people and places you visit in this book, you are captured by the strange allure. There are so many fantastical things to experience and a dangerous Sci-Fi world to explore.

This book starts a year after the last one ended, with Riven attempting to locate her mad scientist of a father. Immediately the tables are turned and the realities we accepted in the first book are tilted and blurred in this continuation. There are alliances made and lines crossed as Caden and Riven, along with their band of misfits, race against time to save Neospes. This story is fast paced and exciting. There is never a dull moment. As the storyline progresses, the danger increases and the stakes are higher. I love how this book is not only a story about saving the world Riven was bound to protect, but also how so much truth comes to light and how these characters react to it.

The relationship between Riven and Caden grows and their love is pure and fierce. It is portrayed in such a way that their connection and feelings are validated. Their love is perfect for a YA story and it is beautiful to watch. Riven’s character is once again the main one and her POV allows the reader to see her grow even more. Her risks are calculated. I loved watching her learn to balance the emotions she is overwhelmed with alongside the calculations of her cyborg parts. She is a brilliantly balanced woman, one that readers will long to see succeed.

The Fallen Prince is a story full of drama, suspense, danger, and hope. As you follow these characters from one dangerous feat of strength to another, you admire their commitment and hope for the best in the end. Amalie does a great job of wrapping the ending up in a perfect package. Lives are lost but the main purpose of this story was preserved: save their world. I would highly recommend this series to anyone who loves YA stories that are high action books wrapped in a beautiful and exciting Sci-Fi world. The Riven Chronicles is a top knotch series that is sure to keep readers engaged and waiting on bated breath till the very end.

I want to thank Sky Pony Press for providing me with a copy of this book to read and give an honest review. Receiving this book for free has in no way altered my opinion or review.

This story picks up right where the first book left off. So, if you haven't read that one, there may be spoilers ahead!

Riven is back on Neopses fully aware of who and what she is. And she's come to terms with this. As in the first book, she's an extremely strong character. I would go so far as to call her selfless because everything she does is for the better of everyone else. She is willing to sacrifice herself for her friends and family. I truly love this aspect of her character. And when faced with a threat against all those she loves, she will stop at nothing to defend them. And it helps that she's a kick butt character who goes up against whatever is laid in front of her. She comes out of the gate fighting and doesn't stop.

The sci-fi aspect of this book is phenomenal. Howard writes the characters well, and she also writes the scenery well. It's easy to picture myself on Neopses, seeing the different landscapes and creatures who inhabit this world.

The action scenes are well thought out. They held my attention fully and I was certainly rooting for the good guy the whole time.

I would say the bad guy actually stole the show in this one. Who turns on Riven and her crew really surprised me, though I will say I had a sinking suspicion which I was hoping would not come true. In the end I was still surprised by how things happened. And I was also surprised by who took what side!

Of course there is a back ground love story, just as there was in the first book. And it's nice to see its development, though the book did have me wondering how things could possibly work out. But this aspect certainly does not dominate the book, which is fantastic. The book really maintains it's course depicting the war between the good guys and the bad guys.

If you enjoy sci-fi and action and adventure, then this series is certainly a good fit for you. With fast paced action scenes and well thought out plot lines filled with suspenseful moments, it's sure to keep your attention. Fans of Marissa Meyer's Lunar Chronicles will find this series engaging and fun.

More Reviews Here: Readers Live A Thousand Lives

I’ve read a bunch of Amalie Howard’s books now and somehow she always manages to keep me on my toes. She excels at delivering the twists and turns and The Fallen Prince delivers so many twists and turns. Not only that, but it delivers nonstop action and drama and romance. I devoured this book in one sitting.

I adore Riven. She is such a kickass character. I love how smart she is and that she is the one saving the day and that everyone looks to her because they know she is smart and she just demands respect. So much girl power and I love it. I also love that she is willing to make the tough choices and do what needs to be done.

Then we have Caden who I basically love. He has grown so much from the first book and I love who he has become. I love that he too is willing to make tough choices and put others needs before his own. I’m also such a sucker for the romance between Caden and Riven. They really do make one another stronger and as a reader you really root for them. My heart hurt for everything they went through in this one and I just wanted them to get the ending they deserve.

Aside from the romance though, the action is nonstop. It starts in chapter one and keeps going until the end. The fight scenes are awesome and with that action comes the twists and turns. You really cannot trust anyone and when you think you know what’s happening something else is thrown into the mix to change the game. I was pretty proud of myself for pegging one thing in particular, even though I’m pretty sure it wasn’t an easy thing to peg. I kinda just didn’t trust anything because it seemed too convincing and I have trust issues with my books. I also really like how smart these books are. Nothing is dumbed down for the reader and its true sci-fi with parallel dimensions and all. The world building is great. Most of the book takes place in Neospes and it’s such a vividly fleshed out and scary world.

The Fallen Prince was a great sequel to The Almost Girl and I really hate saying goodbye to these characters. I love Riven and Caden and everyone else and I’m really going to miss them.

** A 3.1 Review **

Last week I reviewed Amalie Howard’s novel “The Almost Girl.” I’m sure most of you remember it, seeing as how I called the book a “hot mess” gave it 2.9 stars then immediately turned around and boasted about how much I enjoyed it. (Believe me, I’m as confused as you are.) My reason for recommending the book was based entirely on it’s ability to be an entertaining distraction. (An underrated quality I hold infinitely dear.)

Now, at the risk of spoiling “The Almost Girl” (that’s code for: if you haven’t read it, maybe you should stop reading this review) it’s fairly safe to say that things (by the end of the novel) were pretty much tied up with a cute little cyborg bow. The evil scientist was chastised, the slightly creepy clone king was ousted from power, (banished to the Outers where really large things enjoy eating things like him) and Riven was free to be a happy little hybrid. In short, I could have stopped with “The Almost Girl” and been perfectly content. There was no cliffhanger.

However, the title of the second book “The Fallen Prince” grabbed my attention. Where in the world could Howard possibly take this story? How much more was I willing to believe before I threw in the towel? I guess it was time to find out. So I gave it a go. Hell, I had nothing better to do.

Let me start out first by saying that “The Fallen Prince” was significantly better than it’s sister. On all fronts. The action wasn’t as stumbly, the plot was a little less predictable (I stress the word little) and the overtly cliched characters finally broke away from the molds that were holding them back.

The biggest problem I had with Riven in the first novel was that she was nothing that she claimed to be and everything she despised. She was weak. It’s as simple as that. In “The Fallen Prince” she finally filled the shoes she was meant to. She was strong, determined, and decisive. Admittedly she was still naive, but I can forgive that and chalk it up to being a teenager forced into adult situations.

As for Caden, he was also privy to a whirlwind transformation. The most significant being his ability to convey genuine emotion. In “The Almost Girl” Caden was the Mary. Despite his rather blase’ approached to dating (“It was easy.”) he was the obnoxiously perfect character. He was always kind, always understanding, and always said the right thing at the right time. It was kind of nauseating. Thankfully Howard injected him with a few more guts when it came to continuing his story. Not only did he issue tough commands, but he also got jealous. On several occasions. It was kind of beautiful.

But Riven and Caden weren’t the piece de resistance of “The Fallen Prince” it was their nemesis. Oh holy crazy balls. WHAT AT NUT JOB!

I won’t give you details about the who/what/where of said nemesis (though it’s fairly simple to figure out) but I will say that the choices made surrounding him were spot on. The added tension, the complete disregard for human life, his ice-cold negotiating skills, they had me glued to the edge of my seat. Especially when all of his choices involved an entirely new world of devious, jungle-kin, slave owning characters. It was a cacophony of bull-crap wrapped in a blanket of lies and I enjoyed every last second of it.

All of that said, it’s still situational fiction, much like “The Almost Girl” which means a vast majority of people are NOT going to enjoy the romp through Riven’s parrallell universe as much as I did. Though not as sloppy as the first novel it still had it’s moments. It was still predictable in places, and the ending was a bit of a slow burn after such a roaring fire. But if you enjoyed “The Almost Girl” I’d reckon that you’ll enjoy this as well. However, if you are looking for a serious novel, or at the very least serious science fiction. You might want to keep looking.

Me? I’m glad that I read these books, but I probably won’t read anymore of them. There are just too many other books out there waiting for my attention.

The Fallen Prince starts off right where The Almost Girl ends. And Amalie moves this story at the perfect pace.

There’s a lot going on but not once do you feel lost or get confused. Riven is trying to locate her father who everted to the “Otherworld” (Earth) all the while she is trying to stay ahead of The Faction and Guardians. However, when she finds out that their King is in the Otherworld with her, she has no other option but to stop looking for her father and seeing what Caden needs. And it’s not what she wants to hear.

Riven and her new team find themselves on an unknown journey. There are pushed to their limits with fighting against unknown species as well as twists and turns at almost every corner. There is nothing that can prepare them for what comes straight to them.

Amalie does a wonderful job of creating these new worlds that are outside Earth’s realm. You can so easily picture what these characters are seeing and feel the exact wonderment they do. Amalie’s writing will you put you right in the heart of everything and have you never wanting to leave.

The characters Amalie creates are so unique and amazing. Some of them are not all human and it’s just fascinating to see each of them interact together. I felt like I was watching a very entertaining and captivating Sci-Fi movie. The worlds, the characters – everything just comes to life on the pages and flows perfectly.

Riven is a brave, intelligent and heartfelt character. Caden has a heart of gold and will stop at nothing to save his people. Cale is a cruel and heartless asshole but he’s very savvy and a mastermind at surviving. Danton is selfish and only looks out for himself but he’s also a very highly intelligent man who lets his power overrule his feelings.

There are so many characters in this book – I could go on and on about them. They are all unique in their own ways and help make this story extremely enthralling and enrapturing.

If you can’t tell, I absolutely loved this book and this whole series. I was bewitched from beginning to end. Amazing job Amalie!

I received a review copy of The Fallen Prince by Amalie Howard from SkyHorse/ SkyPony Publishing..

The fallen prince started off slower than I had expected, it seemed to pick up exactly where The Almost Girl left off...but I soon realized almost an entire year had passed. In the beginning I was frustrated with a lot of Rivens decisions, but that soon changed.

The author brings back some of the characters from The Almost Girl and introduces us to some new and exciting characters as well. I particularly enjoyed Bass. I felt like his interactions with Riven were almost more real than Cadens. Which is a little disappointing if you are a lover of Caden. I was also less than thrilled about how weak Riven’s mother seemed in this book, especially when she was so awesome in the last one.

And honorable mention to that one scene near the pillars in the Outters that nearly broke my heart!

The Fallen Prince is full of the same cyborg excitement as the Almost girl, and I love the way Amalie paints a picture of the word she has created. In the Fallen prince we are introduced to another entire group of people we had no idea existed ( I can’t say much more without spoilers) BUT the imagery surrounding these people is vivid and beautiful.

The best part by far was the action. Amalie knows how to write amazing edge of your seat action to keep you turning the page. It didn’t get intense until about 30% into the story but as soon as it gripped me, it refused to let go ( sort of like a certain suit i’d love to get my hands on).

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun Sci-Fi read & I think if you enjoyed book 1 you will be equally pleased with the continuation of the story. Though, personally, I did enjoy The Almost Girl a little more than The Fallen Prince.

(I recieved an eARC of The Fallen Prince in exchange for an honest review)

If you’ve read The Almost Girl you know even before picking up The Fallen Prince that you are in for a treat!! (If you haven’t read The Almost Girl – stop reading this immediately and start reading Amalie Howard’s The Almost Girl) Because honestly, I have to say that this sequel is even better than the original!

The quick-paced, action packed story picks up after The Almost Girl’s end and gives you exactly what you were craving. It was clear to me that between novels Amalie Howard upped her story-telling game! The plot moved at the perfect pace, the character’s were given more depth, and the world-building (oh my god, the world building) was on point! Amalie Howard successfully took us on another adventure into a new world that was at once terrifying, thrilling, and attention grabbing! I LOVE when authors transport us to another world and earth seems to fall away and Howard successfully did that in The Fallen Prince.

As I mentioned, the characters, Riven and Caden experienced a lot of growth and were given more depth. Riven was, to me, a lot more likable in The Fallen Prince. She was smarter, wiser, and stronger. Caden is a leader. I very much enjoyed watching the pair grow, both together and make sacrifices they had to for the greater good. It always irks me when a romance seems to be the focal point and the only thing that matters to the protagonists when there’s so much more important stuff going on, but that did not happen here. The romance was seamlessly added into the story, paced well with the rest of the plot and action!

I’d say the series is definitely worth a read. Even if you aren’t necessarily a cyborg fan (I’m not either), you may find yourself pleasantly surprised and totally into the novel (I did!).

Caden is the king of Neospes. His kingdom is under threat of being attacked by reptiles whose behaviour is not their norm. Being short of man power, he has to find a way to save his kingdom from being overthrown by the enemy.

Riven is cyborg general. Her priority is to protect the king. She is being pursued by the enemy who will do anything to have her on their side.

Caden and Riven are in love with each other but saving their people is what matters most. Caden has made a deal with Avaria, another kingdom. This alliance will give them the help they require but it also means that there is no future for Caden and Riven! As much as it hurts, Riven is resigned to being a soldier and protector first and foremost.

They put a team together to undertake this dangerous journey. It's full of perils. When they eventually reach their destination, they are surprised at the Avarian's way of life. So different to their own.

They discover that there is a traitor amongst the midst on their return to Neospes. It comes as no surprise to find out who this traitor is.

This story is full of scientific and technical developments. These are innovative and well described. It's a little slow to begin with but then everything starts happening at a faster pace. It's full of action, suspense and romance.

I like Riven's dedication to her king and country. Caden is willing to make sacrifices to save his kingdom. There are many twists and turns throughout. Knowing who to trust becomes difficult as some of the allies are out to get something for themselves. It also has a beautiful ending.

I found the whole thing fascinating. This book would appeal to scifi fans and tech geeks.

I was thrilled to discover that the second book of The Riven Chronicles came out so soon after the first! After thoroughly enjoying The Almost Girl, I was more than ready to see what happened to Riven and Caden in book two! Amalie Howard certainly did not disappoint. The Fallen Prince was filled with all the action, emotion, and romance I was hoping for!

Now that Riven has brought back her Earth’s King she is more than determined to stop her father once and for all. However, as she delves deeper into her search for him, she discovers that there are even worse threats out there and embarks on her new mission to save her King and her world as she knows it.

The Fallen Prince was full of non-stop action and suspense, just when things started to slow down, a new curve ball would get thrown in. New characters are introduced and old characters are expanded upon more. Through every conflict Riven remained the epic badass that she is. And though her romance with Caden was definitely frustrating, the final outcome between them was everything I wanted it to be. The ending was unexpected to say the least, but all loose ends were tied up smoothly. I’m not aware of there being a third novel, but I’m sure hoping there will be! Fortunately, book two will not destroy you with another cliffhanger, so no need to worry.

If you enjoyed The Almost Girl as much as I did, then I would most definitely recommend you read the next book in the series! And if you haven’t yet embarked on the journey and are a fan of dystopian-scifi novels, then what are you waiting for? Get going!

This was a riveting, fast-paced thriller that will delight sci-fi and dystopian fans alike. With complex characters, a fascinating world, and terrifying robotic creatures, there was no end to the action and adventure.

I was first introduced to Howard with her Aquarathi series, and I have been a fan ever since. Unfortunately, I haven’t read The Almost Girl, yet but that didn’t stop me from loving every second of this story. Howard gives enough backstory so that I wasn't completely in the dark about Riven and the events that led up to this book, and I am quite excited to dive into the first book to see it all play out.

Although this story is fiction, it is quite interesting but also scary to think that perhaps in the near future we could be facing a world filled with cyborgs, and if this series is anything to go by, it's going to be horrific but also so amazing.

Riven is a kickass character who is equally rebellious as she is loyal. Not only did she have to deal with the destruction of her world, but also her heart, as Caden had to do what was right for his people. I loved seeing her in action. She was a warrior - a real force to be reckoned with, but she also had heart, and stood up for everything she believed in.

This book was perfect in every way, playing out like a movie in my head as I read it. It enthralled me to no end, with its intensity, intrigue and emotion. A spectacular read!

This book is # 2 in a series of the Riven Chronicles. However you don't have to read the very first one before this one. I'am currently now reading the first one The Almost Girl.
I really enjoyed this book. We meet Riven a female that has nanoplasm for blood, a machine and human.
She is in the hunt for her father, the one who made her this way. Riven is out for revenge for all that he has done.
But when the king of the other world needs her help and the fate of Neospes rest in her coming back and working with her father to help those people.
She has to put aside her revenge to help the king who she is in love with.
Caden the young king, is torn by his duty to help his people and doing what he wants by being with Riven.
Their world is being taking over by reptiles and half bred animals made through creations. Riven and Caden and some friends.head to another place to make alliances to save his people and world. However it means he will not be able to be with Riven.
But however there are secrets and a spie within their group who want the other world to end. Can Riven trust anyone? Will she figure out what's really going on before to late? Will she let her feelings for Caden cloud her judgement on the mission that has to be done?

This book was so good!!! This is called the Riven Chronicles but this book has a very good summed up ending. So I'm not sure where more books would come into play. I really would like to see another book though. Maybe one where they are bringing their world back.

This book opens a year after The Almost Girl ends. Riven is on the tail of her father. And things aren't looking very good. I really didn't like Riven in the first few pages of this book. She seemed like a loose cannon and well kinda like a nasty person. But she becomes her old self a few more chapters in.

Everyone in this is pretty much the same as book one. We do get some new faces and a lot of new surprises. Lots of twists and people being traitors esp one that I just didn't see coming. One major twist was about a new city that pops up in their dead world. That was a big shocker!!!

This book has us staying in their decimated world. We really don't spend much time in the other world. If you loved book one you will devour this one! I know I did!

If you love this blend of Syfy and Dystopian then def pick this one up!

i love the way amalie howard grabs our imagination & emotions as they race against time to save neospes , found it really hard to put this book down & still wanted more when it finished

This was such a captivating story!! Very well written and thought out!! The characters are very well developed and continue to grow throughout the story. This was a great YA sci-fi/dystopia read!!

Riven is on a mission to find her father that has been on the run for awhile. Riven is always one step behind her father because of course he is the one that created her and her sense of tracking others down.

Riven and Caden get together and go on one adventure after another while tracking her father. The adventures cause tons of twists and turns in the story and keep you turning the pages as fast as you can. I love to see how Riven and Caden's relationship developed over the time span of their adventures!! They made a great couple and I was rooting for them the whole time.

Overall a great read that everyone can enjoy!! I can't wait to see what is next from this author!!

Ah, here is the problem with signing up to review this book. One, I should have done more research and realized that this book was not the first in the series.

Not to say that I didn't enjoy the book but it was exactly a rave considering I had no idea what the hell was going on and I just jumped right into things.

This book included a fast plot that was well-developed right along with the characters. Can you read this as a stand-alone? Probably not considering that it is a continuation of the first. If anything, this book reminded me a lot of Rescued by Tordin minus the hot aliens rescuing the human women. But hey, very similar plots.

I can easily rate this a 3.5 and most likely, it will be treated higher once I get the first book into my hands.

Blog you later, awesome book nerds.

This is book two in the Riven Chronicles by Amalie Howard. Book 2 picks up where The Almost Girl, book 1, left off. Riven is still on the hunt for her father. When it comes to sequels, they either fall flat, or highly surpass the first book. The Fallen Prince is definitely the latter.

I don't think I have enjoyed a book about a cyborg this much since Cinder.

This book is fast paced and exciting. It is full of action and suspense. IF you are a fan of YA sci-fi, this series is definitely for you.

The fallen prince is an action packed adventure. Amalie Howard had me on the edge of my seat from the first chapter. The book lacked a little in the background of the science that was key to the story. But the heart and action more than made up for it. Riven and her angst captured my heart. And the last 10 pages. Wow. If the rest of the book had been in archaic Gaelic pentameter, it still would have been worth it to get there. I eagerly await the next chapter.
