Deceived

Rate this book
The passionate, impulsive Briana Howard and the sly, snarky Jonas Whitmeyer make a perfect mess of a couple. Both are stubborn, smart and sexy. They’re also human clones with supernatural powers.

Jonas had resigned himself to a solitary life on the remote island of Palmyra, home of Sandra Whitmeyer’s clandestine clone-growing lab. With young clones now inexplicably dying, Jonas is torn between feeling responsible for cleaning up his mother’s mistakes—alone—and his desire to be with Bree.

A heated tussle on Palmyra leaves Jonas and Briana further apart than ever. Bree storms off to Portland, Oregon, but not before encountering clones of a loved one lost long ago.

Jonas tracks down Briana in Portland, where they race to discover the truth about ties between the Howards and the Whitmeyers against a host of obstacles and enemies. Will Jonas and Bree find a way to be together amid an ever-shifting maze of deceit, misdirection and danger unearthed by the darkest of family secrets?

This is the fifth and final book in the Mindspeak series by Heather Sunseri and it was a decent finish to the story of a group of clones who all have mind powers. Having read the first three books many years ago and the fourth a couple of years ago, it was hard trying to sort all the characters out and remember what had happened previously without rereading the books. There was no recap at the start of this one which was frustrating, especially as the books all featured different clones, although they were all present in some manner by the end of this book. I guess the series is done, but never say never.

A good thriller with this group of cloned young people, who are slowly discovering their mind powers and dealing with the nefarious people who had created them and wantied to control them for some purpose, not necessarily for the betterment of humankind. Briana and Jonas are our alternating narrators here. I enjoyed this with all its flaws. 3.5 stars

Oh my! Where do I even begin? This was pure awesomeness. I hadn’t read the previous books in the series so I wondered if I was going to need to read them before beginning this. You know, so I won’t get lost and confused. I didn’t! Don’t get me wrong, I will most definitely be reading the prior books, but I didn’t get lost or confused.

Sunseri has amazing world building skills and makes the reader feel as if they are actually there. Her descriptions and everything were perfect. I felt as if I were actually there in the story.

This honestly should be a movie.

Her character building is strong. I loved reading Briana and Jonas’ story. Briana is strong, determined, and is confused. She is in love with Jonas, but isn’t sure what her life direction is or who she is.

Jonas doesn’t think Briana deserves a guy like him or to live a life on an uninhabited island for the rest of her life. Due to this, he pushes her away, except she leave Palmyra and becomes concerned about her safety.

I’m also curious to learn more about Addison. She’s a fascinating 10-year-old.

The characters are also far from perfect. Sometimes they made some really bad decisions, but they also made some really good ones. They are relatable, fun, and were never boring.

The clone thing was also quite fascinating and original. Briana has a passion for the young clone children and will do anything to save them when they go missing.

Did I mention that it was pure awesomeness and I can’t wait to see what’s next in store for this series.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the author for my honest review, which I have given. I was not required to write a positive review and have not been compensated for it in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.

Deceived - Mindspeak 5 - Heather Sunseri

5 Huge Mindblowing Stars !

An absolutely mindblowing amazing series, these books are near the top of my all time favourite ever list! Briana (Bree) and Jonas's story is certainly no exception, fully complimenting this series. This series is best read in order, but maybe not essential.

Their world of human cloning is unlike everyone elses, packed full of special powers, corruption and adventure. Their journey is brilliantly written and completely transports you right into the heart of their life.

Sadly, I didn't have time to re-read the series before starting this one, however I was pleasantly surprised that the story all fell into place really nicely.

A superb action packed read, with suspense, chemistry and betrayal. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. Once again a really easy 5 stars for me - I simply love this series !

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Having read the first 3 books in the series, I was sure I could give an honest multi-star review of any further books.

Before anything else, let me say that it's a pleasure to read an author who can spell and knows English grammar! There are budding writers out there whose grammar and spelling and lack of knowledge of homonyms are so bad that - for me, anyway! - they interfere with reading their books.

Sunseri develops her characters individually, so that they can be real in your imagination and can act in accordance with their own character development.

Her writing is fast-paced, and each novel in this series built a tension that drew me in so that I kept wanting more and had a hard time putting the books down to do chores. I read this one in 1 sitting. Her villains are people you love to hate, and her kids are people you can empathize with. And in this day of ESP and clones and vampires and cookie-cutter plots, her plots stand out for their individuality.

If you haven't read any of the Mindspeak series, quick - run out and get them!

I received 'Deceived' as an ARC for my honest review and what is the first thing about this book is its Phenomenal. Heather Sunseri you have out done yourself.
Briana is on a quest to find out why human clones are being sent to her father's lab. The relationship between Briana and Jonas is an emotional roller coaster. You just want to slap Jonas at one point where he would stop pushing his feelings for Briana away for what he thinks is best for her and her future. In the end the person who was responsible for making Briana's life hell is her mother. Didn't see that coming until almost the end. By the end Briana and Jonas have secured all the human clones and decide to make a go at their relationship beside "Lexi did say you and I were a hot mess."

I've never read the other books in the series but I still managed to enjoy reading the book.

1. I love the idea of the clones having supernatural powers and that they are willing to use their powers to do good.

2. The entirety of the book had me really intrigued. I was on edge, trying to brace myself for what will happen. Lies. Deception. Who can you really trust?

3. I love Bree's compassion and determination. She's a very strong-willed woman who is trying to find her place.

As the story progressed, I became more curious about the backstory. It's not really necessary to read the books prior to this one, but I bet it will be more enjoyable if you did. I plan on reading the start of the series.

I absolutely loved this series!

I absolutely loved this series! What a fun ride! I read each installment back to back, and thrilled with the medi-scientific storyline. It was exciting to experience each of these delightful young characters as they learned about themselves, and step into their power, dispel fears, and ultimately own and embrace themselves and their tight knit companions… all the while coming to terms with who they could trust, who to takedown and ultimately who to love.
Fabulous storytelling! So glad I found Heather Sunseri - a new favorite author for me, I’ll be sharing with friends!

Deceived has the ability to captivate! This is Bree and Jonas’s story and it’s packed full of action, suspense and romance. It’s book 5 in the Mindspeak series so I recommend reading the first four books prior to this one. This author has an incredible imagination and her storyline is definitely intense. The villains are always just around the corner so to speak; it keeps you on your toes guessing who the bad guy is…then trying to figure out who the worse guy is when another possibility pops up. I recommend this series to Sci-fi and Romance fans.

Deceived by Heather Sunseri is the fifth book in the Mindspeak series. Brianna Howard has just graduated from high school and she is not sure what she wants to do with her future. Bree has decided to visit Jonas Whitmeyer on Palmyra (an island). But Jonas knows that Brianna needs to decide what she wants to do with her life and pushes her away. Jonas does not want Bree staying on Palmyra for him (not that they talk to each other about the situation). Jonas feels he needs to stay on the island to clean up the mess his mother, Sandra, made and he needs to figure out why clones are dying. Then Bree checks on two sick clones and sees something that sends her running back to Portland. Jonas and friends go after Bree (thanks to Raven’s ability to find clones) to see if they can help her (she does not want help). Something is going on at Howard BioTech that involves clones (tracker devices). Bree tries to cozy up to Vance Carrington (VP of Operations), but Vance ends up dead. Bree is the prime suspect and the police are out to arrest her. Bree must now team up with Jonas to get answers (especially since they have the police and IIA agents trying to find them). What is going on at Howard BioTech? Is Bree’s father involved? Can Jonas and Bree find out what is going on? Who is trying to frame Bree for murder?

I found it difficult to summarize Deceived. There is quite a bit going on in this novel (I just gave you a small summary). Deceived can be read as a stand-alone book if you have not enjoyed the previous novels in the series (I have read three of the five books). The author does a good job of summarizing prior events. Though reading the novels would be helpful (and they are pleasurable to read). There are two things that I did not like about the book. One is that too much of the story (the first half of the book) was devoted to the romance (or possible romance) between Jonas and Brianna. They each went on about their attraction, their looks, etc. The other was the alternating chapters. One chapter told from Brianna’s point-of-view and the next from Jonas’. This went all through the whole book. I found it distracting. I wish the story had been written in the third person (makes for an easier to read novel). I give Deceived 4 out of 5 stars (I liked it). Technically, Deceived is a young (or new) adult novel, but I think that older readers will enjoy the story (like myself).

I received a complimentary copy of Deceived in exchange for an honest evaluation of the book. I will always provide an honest and forthright review.

OMG! Heather Sunseri has done it again ladies & gentlemen ..
First, let me just say I have been a HUGE fan of this author since I stumbled upon her first book in the series, Mindspeak, about 2 yrs ago. I literally finished those first 3 books in the series within weeks of each other. I had never read anything like this story; it was so intriguing & creative. Heather's writing just draws you in & before you know it you're completely enraptured and it's been 3 hrs since you've taken your eyes off your Kindle screen !

When I heard the author was continuing the series I was extremely happy, but when I found out Jonas was getting his own book, I was beyond excited! I always had a soft spot for Jonas. If I'm being honest, I had never cared for Briana but I was looking forward to getting to know her. Well, Deceived did not disappoint!
It starts off on Palmyra, the island, (or atoll as it's often referred to in the story) where the evil Sandra Whitmeyer created all those clones. Jonas had decided to stay on the island, take charge of the clones - raise & teach them until they where old enough to go to the boarding school, Wellington, that Lexi and Jack are now running. Bree is looking to find her place in the world now that she's graduated from Wellington and is learning the extents of her gift. She visits Jonas on the island in hopes she will be welcomed to stay there with him and help him out with the clones. Jonas, although he cares deeply for Bree, doesn't want her to stay; he wants more for her than for her life to be confined to the lonely island. While visiting though, Bree learns there are clones on the island who look like her deceased brother, and these particular clones keep becoming extremely ill & dying. She sets off on a mission determined to learn about her father's role in the situation.

The story is thrilling! The writing is amazing! Jonas makes my heart melt. Bree is a force to be reckoned with. Just read the book already! I promise you'll be glad you did!

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I will preface this by saying I did not read the 1st 4 books in this series. I planned on it and still will read them at some point; however, the review was needed so I just started with this one and hoped I could keep up. Fortunately, this book did a fantastic job at allowing the reader to understand a brief synopsis of what I assume happened in books 1-4 and it did such a good job at it that I plan on going back and reading them at some point.

Also, as a side note, I was thoroughly pleased to see that there was actual editing done in this book. So many e-books that I have read lately have numerous misspelled words and grammatical errors that while the storyline is good the errors are distracting. While I know my writing skills are not up to par, I am also not getting paid to write.

The characters were great and the idea of cloned humans and what side effects they might have was a joy to read. My only complaint with the characters is that the love story between Jonas and Bree was a little wishy washy, ie: "he/she loves me, he/she hates me, oh what am I going to do when they break my heart? but I just can't live without them". Side characters such as Vance were thoroughly developed to their perspective roles. Vance was absolutely a terrible human being, Addison a sneaky little thing with no real loyalties other than her own sense of right/wrong, Bree's mom was a duplicitous drunk with a secret, and her dad was a simply shady CEO type.

The plot line was quick and twisty with plenty of drama and action to keep the reader thoroughly engrossed. Very easy to read and understand. No confusing side stories or random scenes that don't add anything to the plot.

Overall highly enjoyable. So much so that I will be reading books 1-4 with high expectations.

Heather Sunseri yet again creates a fantastic read, ensured to draw in readers of all ages. I was expecting something no less than amazing, and I got something even more so. I personally loved the changing perspectives between the characters, which allowed everything to fill in well, and also showing different scenes you could not gain from just one character. The point of view between the "new" characters is refreshing, showing new unseen backstories and filling in hidden pieces. At first I was unsure how I would feel about the whole book being mostly about Jonas and Briana, because of the lack of backstory and "depth" of the characters shown in the previous books so far. After reading a few chapters however, I was enthralled. The never-ending shift of events and emotions brought light upon all of the characters, showing them from a different perspective and creating the feeling of involvement with the story and characters. Starting with the first, every page with have your eyes scanning with anticipation and your heart beating in excitement. All the new bits of information given throughout the book are like puzzle pieces slowly coming together to form a picture along with the other books in the series. One by one, the minds of each of the original 7 plus others have been opened to us, and you will not be disappointed by Jonas and Briana's. The revolving love story adds a romantic edge to the story, mixing in with the mystery and sci-fi like feel. I cannot wait to see what comes next in this absolutely amazing series.
For previous and new readers, this is a book I recommend 10/10, along with all others by Heather!! I received a copy of this book for an honest review. It was not required to be positive, but Deceived was such a wonderful book that it receives all five stars. My review is completely truthful and my own opinion.

I read and really enjoyed the 1st book of the Mindspeak series. I received a free copy of Deceived (Mindspeak #5) in exchange for my honest (not necessarily positive) review; this is it.

I wasn't certain if I'd be able to keep up with the storyline of a sequel having missed a number of previous books in this series. Also, Briana was not a character one warmed to in Mindspeak (1st book) yet in "Deceived" she's the main character.
I was delighted to find that there was enough background material to fill me in on the important parts I'd missed without intruding too much on the current storyline. I felt this book could even be read as a stand alone novel and enjoyed as such, although I'm sure it would leave most readers wanting to go back and read the earlier novels in this series for more.

In Deceived, Briana's personality is more deeply explored. She's still the same Bree we knew, but we gain a better understanding of her, allowing us to care and connect more closely with her.
The secondary character of Addison intrigued me, leaving me curious to discover more. I know something of her was explained in earlier stories, but I believe there's possibly more to be revealed.

Simply put, this book is a good read. I enjoyed it and continually wanted to know what would happen next (making me late for meals on a few occasions!) It was well edited and kept up an exciting pace without being totally exhausting or unbelievable. The concept of clones & unethical medical research, while not new, are presented in a novel way. I would recommend this especially to lovers of Fantasy, Sci-fi &/or young adult fiction, especially those who like these peppered with some romance.

I loved this series! Deceived did not disappoint! Kept me reading and on my toes!
Not to give too much away....(don't continue to read if you don't want to know what happens...I did warn you!)

This is the story of Brianna (Bree, Red, etc...) and Jonas as they try and figure out not only their feelings, but how those feelings equate in a world of danger and mystery. As Jonas pushes Bree away because "he wants something better for her" Bree takes matters into her own hands. One of my favorite quotes is, "Jonas, I have never had to beg someone to want me around. I'm not about to start with you." I love Bree's spunk and fire! She is great! Even though she cares for Jonas, she doesn't just let him back into her life. She does make him work for it! And work for it he does. Jonas works to let Bree see that he can be a positive part in her life. He helps her see that maybe she needs someone else to help her, and that he can be that guy.
All throughout the story I was on my seat. I loved the dialogue between these two characters. I also loved seeing the other characters from previous books and the culmination of how their stories are being shaped together. This is a great series! I love this series! (Oh wait I already said that! That means I really meant it!) I can't wait to read what is going to happen next!

I wasn't quite sure what I was getting myself into when I started this book. I had only read the first book and an excerpt of the second, so it's a bit of a understatement to say that the main characters of Deceived had an uphill battle to get me invested in their story - they really weren't my favorite people going into this. I am so glad they they got a book of their own. I was able to see Jonas and Bree as complex people with their own challenges to overcome and dreams they were trying to fulfill. And the relationship between them was at once frustrating and heartwarming. I guess it goes to prove what I heard: even if we could read each others minds, we'd still have misunderstandings.
I enjoy books with some mystery in them, and I quite like the mysteries I can solve, but I really adore the stories that keep me guessing until just before the Big Reveal. (I won't go into my opinion about the stories that make it too easy for my to solve the mystery, because that just doesn't apply here.) I was desperately flipping pages to learn more the whole way through the book. Even when I finally got to the end, I was begging the universe "please let there be another chapter", until there wasn't. Sigh. I can't wait to see what happens next.

The Mindspeak series is amazing! The characters are well written and engaging and the overall plot is intriguing to think about. What if there were clones? And what if they had the ability to heal any disease? The author takes you into a world where the answers to these questions are revealed.

After High School, Briana is dealing with the confusion of finding out she has been cloned, and facing the fear of what to do with the rest of her life. She seeks out Jonas, whom she has unresolved feelings for, on an island where the clones are being gathered and given a safe place to live. After feeling as though she doesn’t have a place with Jonas, she returns home and is immediately drawn into a mystery that is more complex than she could have ever imagined.

I appreciate the author taking the time to explain the inner thoughts and drive of a character that was really easy to dislike in the first three books. Understanding Briana’s point of view, and why Jonas felt the way he did about her, really helped me find the redeeming qualities within her character. It isn’t necessary to read the entire series, as I feel this book explains enough of the history to engage the reader, however, I highly recommend it. I would definitely give a 4.5 rating if I could, the series is a wonderful read for adults both young and old.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I have followed this series, and have loved all of the books. It is interesting and new to follow Jonas and Brianna through this book. It usually was Lexi and last book was Kyle and Raven.
I enjoyed this book, especially since Jonas and Brianna have such strong personalities. They both are alike and used to being independent and strong but as you read you know they need and love each other. It was great to include all the characters for this book and tie things together from the last one. Heather brings Lexi, Jack, Raven, and Kyle back from Costa Rica, they aren't in the story too much but don't worry they aren't left out. In Deceived you also get to read more about Palmyra and what Jonas and Lexi are trying to with it. It was a good read, I was a little bummed by how short it was but a, glad to know it isn't the end of their stories. I am hoping the next book includes more of everyone and is about the trackers and how they are still in Jonas, Lexi, and Raven, Ultimately, you can't go wrong with this series. Love them all. Every time I read a book by Heather, as soon as I have finished I am ready to pick up the next.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Where could I honestly begin to describe this book? It was a page turner and one of the few books in a series that I dedicate all of my time to. I really enjoyed the change of perspective to Briana and Jonas. Readers got to see a new side of both of these characters(mostly Bree) that we had not gotten to see in the other books.

It was a great addition to the series, and I absolutely adored the strong relationship and development of the two's romance throughout the story. I must admit that because of this new side of Briana, she has currently raised her ranks with me and now is my favorite character. Although I still do enjoy Lexi with her beautiful love story with Jack, I mean, who wouldn't?

Even though the book was not that long, however I think every good book is never long enough, it was very satisfying. Heather Sunseri knows how to give her readers what they want and I am eager for the next book. Hopefully the next book will go deeper into the intentions of the IIA and expand on what might be the consequences of the trackers in the clone's heads.

All in all, it was great and I cannot speak more highly of it!

**I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

In complete honesty, I adore this series. From the first novel I was 100% hooked. I simply can not put them down! I love Heather Sunseri's writing style, the lively characters weaved into her stories and the intricate plot lines which make them all the more interesting.

Reading this author's books is never a drag. They are to the point yet in enough detail to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Normally when a series continues after three books, those that follow seem to be a bit repetitive and sometimes even pointless. Now this is not the case for all series however this has been a frequent occurrence in my reading life.

My favourite part of this collection is that it defies this commonality. The first three books of the series are based on a character, Lexi's, journey. The fourth and fifth mark a change in direction of the story as a whole while still integrating the other characters. This way they are not disconnected.

To conclude, this book is a definite must-read, I recommend it wholeheartedly. Get comfortable, grab some snacks and prepare for a weekend full of adventure. I promise you will not be disappointed!

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I have read all of the books in the Mindspeak series and really enjoyed them all. To be honest I have read the first three books twice. I do that with the ones I really like or there is a big gap between release dates. For those who have not read the other books I would encourage you to read them first.

Starting this book I was nervous. I LOVED Jonas so much in the other books. However, I was not a Briana fan. I admit by the end of this book I saw her in a different light. I understood more about what molded her into that mean girl we saw at the beginning of the series. Some mentioned they didn't like the back and forth between Jonas and Briana. I think it really fit who they are and have been since they were introduced in the series. They are both snarky, independent and damaged by their families and circumstances. I enjoyed seeing Addison involved and having the "gang" all together again.

I gave it four stars because I rarely give five star reviews. With that said, I enjoyed the book very much and hope to see more soon.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. I thought this book was well written and offered great insight into two other essential characters of the series. I really enjoyed reading it and had a hard time putting it down. It was really nice to get to know Bree and Jonas more, and see how they think and feel, and why they act the way they do. In other books, Bree doesn't come off very nice and this allows you to get to see her side of things and what makes her who she is. I personally enjoy reading a little bit more about the special powers and seeing more mind reading between the characters, and wish this book had a tad more moments of those. I do hope for more of that in future books, however that is just my preference. I really enjoy this series and hope there are more books to come. I would recommend reading the series in order, before reading this book so that you get to know the other characters and background of the story. I’ve read all the books in this series and most of Heather’s other books. This isn’t one of my favorites, but I did enjoy reading it and am thankful for the opportunity to read and review it.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was definitely ready for the next installment in the Mindspeak series. However, this book took a while to hook me. Once I was hooked, I devoured the rest. You will enjoy Jonas and Bree as main characters, but I was not nearly as invested in their development as I was previously with Lexi and Jack. To be fair, three books all about you, make you the favorite.
Everything ties up nicely like a present with a big red bow, and I am generally in favor of the happy ending. I would not mind being left with a bit more to question here. The plot was well-planned and interesting, but everything worked out a little too easily. Sunseri's change of voice certainly added to this feeling. Effort and drama played out with Lexi's character while we were busy listening to Jonas' point of view. Instead of seeing the story unfold, we saw results with a quick summary after the action. This book was a little too short to need that type of quick wrap up. Lexi would have been a reliable storyteller all on her own, and I think the book would have read with more anticipation, intrigue, and even romance.
