Mia Gladwell’s life is going nowhere. The media has skewered her debut novel, her fiancé Carson, a successful Hollywood producer, has jumped ship, and now she’s living in her sister’s carriage house—unattached, unemployed, and uninspired. Then she learns that the Los Angeles estate of iconic author Ray Bradbury is up for sale, and she feels an immediate urge to buy the wonky old house, convinced that moving into the late author’s home will inspire her to create her best work yet.

Life in the Bradbury house is not what Mia imagined, however. Soon after moving in, to fulfill a debt she owes to Carson, she agrees to take in a pill-popping young actress as a tenant, and suddenly she finds herself in a balancing act between her needy ex, an unpredictable starlet, and her disapproving sister, who’s keeping a close eye on her. Add to this a series of mysterious sketches left at her doorstep by a stranger, and Mia’s life is more complicated than ever. As she searches for clues, though, Mia discovers insights into her own life. Maybe moving into Bradbury’s house was a big mistake—but maybe not.

Light and enjoyable read about a woman who buys Ray Bradbury's house with the hope of it leading her to find her inspiration as a writer.

The House of Bradbury begins with Mia Gladwell moving into Ray Bradbury's house. Mia bought this house after coming out of a 3 year depression from her failed novel and failed engagement. Bradbury was one her favorite authors and she has high hopes that living in his house will help her to write again. Her former fiance, a big time movie producer, loans her the money to buy the house with supposedly no strings attached. However, he quickly reaches out and asks her to take in one of his clients, a 23 year old starlet named Zoe Winter who was recently released from rehab. At the same time, someone has been leaving strange drawings on Mia's front door. Eventually, Zoe, the drawings, and Bradbury's house lead Mia on a path to self discovery.

I really enjoyed The House of Bradbury. The inclusion of Ray Bradbury's house and snippets about his life and work add an element of originality. This book makes for a great summer read!

I received an advanced copy of The House of Bradbury by Nicole Meier and thoroughly enjoyed the book. Meier incorporates romance, a bit of mystery and a nod to pop culture that results in a wonderful story that I found entertaining and unique.

I appreciated Meier’s writing style, which is descriptive while being brisk. The story moved along at a quick pace without losing the richness of characters’ lives and perspectives. When the main character, Mia Gladwell, moved about her new house and neighborhood in LA, I had a vivid picture in my mind of each scene. As she described her feelings about her ex fiancé, sister or her new tenant, I felt her stress and conflict. Meier has a distinctive voice that keeps the story moving at a good pace.

Also, the plot for The House of Bradbury is quite original. I love the juxtaposition of old and new; an old house in need of work and two young women who are also in need of a “renovation”. The way Meier incorporated this idea into her plot was refreshing and quite original.

I can highly recommend The House of Bradbury. It is an enjoyable read and you will breeze through the book. I read this over the holidays and it was the perfect escape during a hectic time. If you are looking for a book to take on your next vacation, this is it. I look forward to reading more by Meier.

This book was amazing. It captured my attention immediately. The House of Bradbury had me intrigued. The house itself was so fascinating. Then you add in great characters, all broken or significantly fractured, needing to be put back together or mended. It is the relationships formed that help them all do just that. Not without bumps along the way. Not without work. Not without fear. I was invested in all the things that happened to each and everyone of them...my heart breaking when their's did, triumphing when they succeeded and all the emotions in between. There was also a mystery interwoven, that referenced To Kill a Mockingbird (which is pretty much the best book ever). A great summer read and a perfect selection for any book club! 5 stars

I’ll admit I bought this book simply because I was intrigued at the idea of someone purchasing the late author Ray Bradbury’s former home. And that’s literally the only thing this book has to do with Ray Bradbury so that was disappointing. Still, this was a light read that I breezed through in a couple sittings with a few eye rolls.

Mia Gladwell has been down on her luck for a while: her debut novel was not well-received, her Hollywood producer fiance Carson stepped out on her one too many times, and she’s sick of living with her controlling sister.

When the home of Ray Bradbury goes on the market, Mia is charmed by the fixer-upper and hopeful that living there could inspire her writing. Unfortunately she can’t afford it so she goes to her philandering ex and talks him into giving her the money to purchase the home because he owes her for all the cheating.
Apparently that doesn’t settle the debt because soon Carson talks Mia into taking in a stereotypical young actress struggling with addiction and fresh out of rehab.

From here it’s a feel-good story though we don’t actually see any character development or relationship growth between characters.
We’re told that Mia becomes friends with the misunderstood starlet because they have tea together in the middle of the night a couple times. Apparently that inspires Mia's writing and her days are suddenly filled with a new project.
We’re told that Mia and Carson’s complicated relationship is healthy because there’s humor involved and coincidentally he can help her with her new project.
We’re told that Mia’s controlling sister is actually lovable and we should understand her better because her husband “emotionally cheated” on her with a college student and she's going to work on things "for the children".

Yeaaaah, maybe there were more eye rolls than I thought.

Then I assume the author decided they should throw in something more about Ray Bradbury other than the random fact the main character lives in his home so there are some sketches that are left at Mia’s doorstep that appear to illustrate Bradbury’s stories and she spends some time trying to figure out who is leaving them for her and why.

A perfectly fine beach read that is all fluff - and that’s okay every once in a while for this reader.

The House of Bradbury was a great summer read. Lighthearted with a bit of mystery and romance. Mia Gladwell is an author whose first book seemed like it would be a critical success, but it didn't do too well in sales and the media's bad reviews didn't help. Her marriage failed after she caught her Hollywood producer husband cheating. Now, her life is going nowhere when she hears that the home of the late author, Ray Bradbury is for sale. She feels compelled to buy it, thinking it will offer the inspiration she needs to get the creative juices flowing again. Almost immediately after moving in her ex-husband Carson calls on her to help with the starlet of his latest movie. Zoe has just left rehab and needs a quiet haven to stay out of the ever watchful eye of the paparazzi. Mia is not sure if she wants to share her new creative haven, but reluctantly agrees. As Mia and Zoe get used to each other, Mia begins to like the young star and feel sympathetic for how she got to this tough spot in her young life. The soul of Bradbury seems to be present as Mia finds herself working on a new manuscript. At the same time mystery drawings keep turning up on her doorstep as Zoe falls back into the bad habits that landed her in rehab. Mia's sister Emma and brother-in-law Tom complicate things further with marriage problems. Somehow Mia comes out on top with a new love interest to boot. Thank you to Book Sparks for the opportunity to read and review this debut novel.

I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of The House of Bradbury. Nicole Meier is a solid storyteller and for her debut novel, she presents an impressive collection of memorable characters against the backdrop of the historic home of author Ray Bradbury. Like the the main character, Mia, it's obvious that Meier is a fan of Bradbury. I loved discovering the little personal details about him that are expertly scattered throughout the book. The story flows nicely and unfolds little by little... I found myself not wanting to put it down. All in all it's a great read and I highly recommend it!

Mia Gladwell’s life has come crashing down. Her first book was a failure, her fiancé, Carson, cheated on her, and she’s living in her sisters carriage house. When the iconic home of Ray Bradbury goes up for sale, Mia purchases the home with the help of Carson knowing all too well that there will be a debt to repay. She moves forward with hopes that inspiration will strike for her as it did for Bradbury.

When Mia moves into her new house what she finds isn’t at all what she imagined. She knew it had its flaws and characteristics, in fact that’s what she expected, but what she wasn’t counting on where the anonymous notes and unplanned house guest. Thanks to Carson, Mia is forced to take in Hollywood actress, Zoe, who is fresh out of rehab for drug and alcohol abuse. At first, Mia is unsure of the situation and her capability to take care of Zoe, but she ends up enjoying the company and her motherly role, even teaching her a thing or two about herself. Just when you begin to think you’re getting a happy ending, tensions run high and secrets get revealed. Mia is left questioning whether or not the house was a mistake.

As it turns out the house is exactly what Mia needed. We get the history of the Bradbury home without it being the main focal point, it doesn’t over power the characters, and its a nice element that really gives a little something special to the overall story. The story line was gripping, quick paced (but not too fast), and the writing was perfection. What a gem! My only regret is not getting just a little bit more of our “Boo Radley.” This debut novel had me staying up way to late and waking up early just to finish. I will definitely be reading anything Nicole puts out after this.

I cannot stand this book, and 74 pages is all I am willing to give it. I was so excited to read this and actually requested that my public library order it in, just because the premise sounded so fun. BUT, the writing style is clunky, there’s a lot of telling as opposed to showing, and the main character, Mia, is completely idiotic. I would not wish this reading experience on anyone. The few snippets I saved to try and illustrate my frustration:

“On her left was the head of auburn hair, attached to a petite frame wearing a checkered black shirt and black jeans with matching combat boots. Mia couldn’t make out her face, as it was bowed down, almost hiding from the sunlight. Pulling up the rear was a hulking bouncer type in a bad leather jacket and an equally unfortunate expression. Mia guessed this was the bodyguard. As the doorbell chimed, she moved at what felt like the speed of molasses to answer.”

Head of auburn hair? Bad leather jacket? Equally unfortunate expression? This description is so heavy-handed, and is just one of many unfortunate passages in this book.

“The next morning Mia awakened to the unceremonious clanging of pots and pans. She dashed out her door with a quickening pulse, afraid of discovering an intruder.”

She heard pots and pans banging and immediately assumed intruder? What kind of intruder would cook in your kitchen, other than the kind you shouldn’t be scared of as Mia was (e.g. sister)?

I give up on this. It’s not often I don’t finish a book, but I can’t take any more nonsense.

I will start this post by saying I had never heard of Ray Bradbury in my life - I know - shame on me, right? I have an excuse - I'm not a big reader of American fantasy, science fiction, horror or mystery fiction at all, and that's what he's about. When I searched him on Wikipedia, I saw he was famous for a book called The Martian Chronicles and I know that I've seen that somewhere - the library, the internet, I'm just not sure.

Anyway, about this book: The main character of this story is Mia Gladwell. She's in a bit of a funk trying to come to terms with the fact that she feels that she's got some serious failures in her life both professionally and personally. She's determined to make a fresh start and try to find something to jumpstart her life, so when the home of famous author, Ray Bradbury goes on the market and becomes available to purchase, Mia borrows money from Carson, her ex-fiancé to buy it.

Of course the money comes with a condition - Carson is in need of a place to live for his star teenaged actress fresh out of rehab. Sounds easy for about a second. When Zoe moves in, she's seems quiet and dark and Mia isn't quite sure how to handle it, having never had children of her own. Her sister has lots to say about everything in a very negative way and things get pretty messy before they get better.

I love how the author tied the history of the home to the story without making it the actual story. I felt that the story moved along at a very nice fast (but not too fast) pace keeping readers very attentive to the characters and their perspectives. The notes and the pictures on the door and the whole story line there was great - it was subtle but ongoing and kept us wondering whether it would be sinister or crazy. Without a spoiler, it didn't turn out to be either of those, but something else entirely.

It was great to see the story move through the repair and restoration of her broken relationship with her sister despite the horrible event of Thanksgiving. As Mia was able to get stronger and find herself and her own voice, it seemed her sister also began to listen. I don't have a sister but I could imagine how awful I would feel if I felt like my sister was against me.

Overall, this book makes for a fantastic summer read! I read it in two days and the story kept me engaged cover to cover! Since this is her first novel and I loved it, so I'll surely be on the lookout for Ms. Meier's next book!

I received a complimentary hardbound copy of this book from the publishers and BookSparks as part of the 2016 Summer Reading Challenge in exchange for this post, which is my honest review and unbiased opinion.

BookSparks’ “Summer Reading Challenge’s” “Best Summer Ever” continues with Nicole Meier’s, THE HOUSE of BRADBURY(SparkPress). We’ve already read some really great novels by some really wonderful authors, so it’s no surprise Nicole’s debut novel, THE HOUSE of BRADBURY is really awesome. Nicole proves to be a solid storyteller, as she introduces us to a group of complex, memorable characters, all set against the Los Angeles landscape and the historic home of iconic writer, Ray Bradbury.

Mia Gladwell’s life is on a downward spiral – in fact, it’s arrived! Her debut novel has bombed. Fiancé, Carson cheats on her, the wedding is off and she’s given him back the ring. Now she’s living in her sister’s carriage house, trying to dig herself out of a depression.

She learns the estate of prolific writer, Ray Bradbury is up for sale and is able to buy it with the help of her still guilty for cheating movie mogul, ex-fiancé, Carson. She thinks this is just the inspiration she needs to get out of her funk.

Soon her life gets complicated in a myriad of ways – some good, some bad, definitely complex! She’s dealing with a disapproving sister, a really obsessed ex, a drug-addicted movie-star who moves in, mysterious sketches begin showing up on her front door – was it a mistake to move into Bradbury’s house? You’ll just have to find out! Trust me, THE HOUSE of BRADBURY is a lot of fun!

Mia Gladwell is in serious need of a fresh start. Her professional (her novel) and personal (her fiance, Carson) aspirations have fizzled. The house of the famous author Ray Bradbury has been put on the market and Mia purchasing the house is a sign to jumpstart her creative and personal future. In order to get started on her new life she has to ask her (now) ex-fiance for the money to help purchase her new home. Carson has a stipulation about loaning her the money: take in a young actress with a little bit of a drug problem. Simple enough, right? Well of course not! With Zoe being famous (and fighting her own demons), a new house to take on, finding mysterious notes at her house (are they meant for her or Zoe?) and a sister with her own problems, Mia has her work cut out for her. However, she soon discovers that she shares some of the blame in her break-up with Carson and starts to learn more about who she is and wants to be. This is a great story about self-discovery and overcoming obstacles (and not just from one character!) This book was a very fun and quick read!

I received an advanced copy of The House of Bradbury by Nicole Meier. The book was a wonderful read with interesting characters that we can all relate to. The story follows main character, Mia Gladwell, through a mid-life crisis of sorts as she tries to come to terms with her recent failures and roadblocks both professionally and personally. Determined to start fresh and find something inspiring in her life, she purchases the home that belonged to prolific writer Ray Bradbury. The house is the backdrop of her own story and Meier incorporates interesting details throughout the book that showcase Bradbury’s home. While the book is fiction, I loved how it tied real world pieces into the story. The book has something for everyone, family struggles, relationships, love and mystery. Meier writes with incredible detail and takes you into the story with her careful intention to the finer points and scene setting. The characters are interesting and relatable and incorporates some of the Hollywood scene. I can’t wait to see what Meier has in store for her next novel!

I had a tiny reservation about reading this book prior to reading it. I think ok I will attempt to read it. Well my attempt became real. I did enjoy this book way more than I thought. Such a good thing. Mia has self doubt about herself but I am glad that she took a giant leap of faith and purchased a home of her own. Although I really knew nothing about author, Ray Bradbury, I felt like I had a good visual picture of just who he was and what he liked to do in his time from the descriptions of the house and the experiences that Mia encountered with the house. Zoe turned out to be another great surprise. I thought she would be a stuck up model/actress type but she was genuine. I could even somewhat put up with Mia's crazy ex, Carson. This book is an enjoyable read.

I picked up this book as I saw it was a May book for BookSparks’ “Summer Reading Challenge’s Best Summer Ever” so I thought I would join in on the fun. Now, I do not know who Ray Bradbury is (shame on me?) but I enjoyed the book nonetheless. The book had a great pace and each chapter made you want to keep reading. BLAH!!!!! I've never read a more annoying, insecure lead character before. The writing style was too juvenile for my taste & having Bradbury's name attached to this is an abomination.

Ray Bradbury is my absolute favorite writer, so a book about a woman who buys his house is certainly going to become a must read.
Mia is a failed writer. Her book crashed and burned, her rich, handsome Hollywood producer fiancé constantly cheated on her and her older sister is a Martha Stewart wannabe nag. In order to afford the house, Mia borrows the money from Carson, the ex-fiancé, and now she owes him a huge favor. It comes in the form of a brilliant young actress, Zoe Winter, who is fresh out of rehab and needs, for lack of a better word, a babysitter.

Ms. Meier's love and respect for Ray Bradbury is obvious as she describes the dusty, creaky old house filled with bookshelves and full of the essence of the beloved writer. (Sadly, in real life the house was torn down so no one ever really moved in after Ray died.)

I found the novel to be sweet, loving, funny and well-written. Mia is able to remain friends with Carson and she actually enjoys watching out for Zoe. I didn't find Mia to be whiney or neurotic.

There's even a touch of mystery--someone is leaving little drawings on Mia's front door that remind her of various Bradbury books. Who is leaving them? A crazed fan? The ghost of Ray Bradbury?

This is an easy and quick read and if you are a Bradbury fan, your next book will probably be one by the man himself. Me? Time to reread Dandelion Wine.

Continuing with my #BookSparks Summer Reading Challenge I was delightfully surprised by the gem of a book, The House of Bradbury by Nicole Meier. Meier, a debut author, tells a story of unexpected friendships and mysterious love all against the backdrop of the historic home of Ray Bradbury. It is a fun, quick read that I could have finished in a day. The story was that seamless and captivating. Again another summer pick that will be a perfect companion at the beach or the pool. Can you tell summer reading is my favorite:)

Mia is a young writer who has been unsuccessful with her first novel. Panned by the critics, she also starts to lose her sense of direction as her fiancee Carson leaves her and she is now living with her sister. She sees that Ray Bradbury’s, a famous mystery/sci-fi author, house is for sale and decides that purchasing the house may just be the inspiration and new start that she needs. Carson being the big Hollywood producer helps her purchase the home but that doesn’t come without some baggage. Mia agrees to take in a young, drug recovering actress, Zoe, who needs a little sense of direction as well, as a favor to Carson. Shortly after moving into the home, mysterious notes are appearing her doorstep. Could it be her handsome neighbor or just some kids playing a prank? As she she starts to develop a friendship with Zoe she sees how she is struggling and almost becomes a mother figure of sorts to her, something Mia was not prepared for. As Mia adjusts to living her life at Bradbury she can see all the magic that it once held for Bradbury himself and her creative energy is sparked. Will she write her next novel, find love and create new friendships? She soon discovers that this house and the presence that was once there could be exactly what she needed in her life.

Meier shines in her debut novel. A sweet story that reaffirms friendships can be made in the most unlikely situations and love always shows up when we are least expecting it. The house being a character itself played a huge part in the book and Meier so beautifully depicted that. I loved the relationship between Mia and Zoe. This relationship really developed each character so beautifully and it made me love Mia even more. The House of Bradbury is a perfect summer read with a sunny plot and refreshing ending!

As a fan of Ray Bradbury myself, I was really excited to receive a copy of this book for review. Nicole Meier used so many different layers to make The House of Bradbury a really intriguing read. I loved the bits of trivia and fun facts about Ray Bradbury that she wove into the storyline. It was such an interesting juxtaposition of fact and fiction, old and new throughout the entire book!

After her debut novel flops and her fiance leaves her, Mia is looking for a new start. When Ray Bradbury’s house is listed for sale, she feels an inescapable urge to purchase the house, thinking it will reinvigorate her as a writer and inspire her next novel to get her out of her current funk, both in writing and life in general. Suddenly, she’s forced to take in a bad girl actress as a tenant as a favor to her ex-fiance, which upends her new life. Just when she thinks life can’t get any more strange, random drawings start showing up on her porch, adding one more issue to her plate. As she adjusts to her new life in the Bradbury house, readers are taken along on her journey to discover whether purchasing the house of a renowned author is the dream she thought it would be or a disastrous mistake.

The elements of friendship, family, romance, and mystery embedded in Nicole Meier’s debut novel made for an enchanting read. There was something somewhat meta reading a book about a writer living in a famous author’s old home, which made the whole story even more of a spectacle for this book lover. I really enjoyed The House of Bradbury and hope to see a lot more like this in the future from Nicole Meier.

What I Say.... This was an interesting book to me. I kept waiting for the big twist - but that maybe because I just came off of a Mary Kubica book, but it never came.

Mia is an unemployed writer, whose ex-husband helps her buy Ray Bradbury's old house. Since I"m not a Ray Bradbury fan, the frequent references to him and his stories were lost on me. Her ex asks her to take in a young actress who is fresh out of rehab and she doesn't think she can say no.

As Mia becomes a surrogate mother to the young actress, she finds herself inspired to write again, what she writes, we never really find out. In the meantime, someone is leaving little drawings in her door, which doesn't seem to be frightening or even that interesting to Mia (I would be scared witless).

In the meantime, her sister is having marital problems but still finds the time and interest to be a mini Martha Stewart - lots of detail on how fancy her dinner parties are, which didn't make a lot of sense for a stay at home mom and and a history professor in California, where did the money come from? I always wonder where the money comes from.

I read another review of this book that called it "chick lit". I am an unapologetic lover of chick lit, and I wouldn't put this book in that category - I always feel like chick lit has a more "fun" element.

This story just felt very level to me, but the dialogue was really good and it felt real - it just felt a lot like reading a daily description of someone's real life. I prefer a little escape.

I won this book on Goodreads first reads.

This story was surprisingly charming and sweet, not at all what I had expected. I loved how it wove the lives of different generations of people (the spirit of the genius Ray Bradbury, the discouraged near middle aged author Mia, and the troubled young actress Zoe) into a touching story about love, admiration, family, and support.

It was refreshing to read a novel where romance, while important, is a side story in the grand scheme of things. Mia is a strong female lead, she refuses to be a doormat for anyone and plows headlong into her problems instead of letting them fester. With some help from a friends, new and old, a mysterious stranger, Mr. Bradbury's spirit and a troubled young actress: Mia finds her true calling and potentially her happily ever after.

This book was a joy to read, I'm grateful to have won it from First Reads and encourage anyone considering it to give it a try. This book while quick, is touching summer read, filled with characters that seem to leap off the pages.

I really enjoyed reading The House of Bradbury. I love how Meier included some of Bradbury personal and the house history into this fiction; readers do not need to know who Ray Bradbury was in order to enjoy this novel. Meier has done a great job describing him and/or his works.

I did not recall who Ray Bradbury was until Fahrenheit 451 was mentioned. I read Fahrenheit 451 back in high school, 10th grade to be exact. It was a good novel. I remember watching the movie along with book as well. Sadly, I have not had a choice to read his other works. I wonder how many of the Ray Bradbury’s stories are real in the novel. Will I ever find an author I love so much that I would do anything to buy his/her house like Mia.

I wish the mystery man story is a little more developed or longer. All the other characters are great, especially Zoe. There are so much going with her. I feel like she can have her own book, maybe that can the next book. =D

Thirty-eight-year-old Mia Gladwell's life is in shambles. Her first novel has tanked, she has moved out of her cheating fiance's place and is living in her sister's carriage house. When Ray Bradbury's house comes on the market, it seems like destiny that Mia should live there. Meier has written an entertaining tale of friendship, intrigue, and love. A fun summer read with likeable but imperfect characters. Mia Caldwell buys and moves into Ray Bradbury’s old house, a late author she’ s always admired. You feel the history of the house and understand her interest in a home that has a rich past and untold stories. It’s a charming story with little bit of mystery, love, family duties and self-discovery.

So I absolutely love the premise of this book, and the cover is gorgeous. One tiny caveat, though: the back cover copy led me to believe that the story began earlier than it did. The first chapter actually opens with the main character moving into Bradbury’s house, as opposed to the events that led up to her decision to move there.
