Mars: a beacon of safety and refuge, unless you’re transporting the disputed embryos of genetically modified animals intended for auction to the Martian elite.
Jack Macleef and his small crew of interstellar merchant marines—including “Bit,” an unexpected indentured servant—think they're on a simple cargo drop when things suddenly go awry. Dodging paint-hurling protestors and mercenaries bent on terrorizing the crew’s families, Jack and Bit have their hands full as they try to keep the crew from falling apart while still delivering the cargo on time.

My journey to become a writer began in 8th grade, when I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and pulled from school to recover. During this time, I was left alone for hours on end and it was then that I discovered new friends within the pages of books. I also learned the blessing of creating my own friends by writing down the stories that plagued my lonely mind—as demented as that sounds. Therefore at the ripe age of fourteen, I wrote my first novel. It sucked! But I kept going and now I am finalizing my first indie novel, with sequels to come, and two other series along with a fiction based blog. I never imagined that first horrible novel about a man who crash landed on his long lost home world would turn into a lifelong passion.

Bit is growing up and standing for herself.
Blaine was seriously messed up.
And I don't like Oden, he's annoying.

The pace is better than in the first book. Lots of action, sometimes i just needed to put the book down just to take a deep breath. It's seriously fucked up how they can go through so much in such a little amount of time.
And I definitely don't want to go to Mars on this universe. Scary, scary.

Wowza the action seriously ramps up in this one...well more like pure chaos and a space soap opera!

The crew has finally landed on Mars and it seems like the crazy was waiting for them on the station. There were a lot of different plot lines, everyone was running for their lives, everyone was hurt in some way, and everyone seemed to be after the crew for some reason or another.

description

I had fun for the sheer level of crazy going on in the plot... it was just a lot. So many baddies and back tracking locations and multiple missed connection plot lines. And I'm still not sure whose going to be in the harem

The second book in the Echoes of Sol series by Charissa DuFour. This book continues where the first book left off. The freighter that Bit is on arrives at Mars and it's time to unload their cargo. Part of the cargo is a box of animal embryos. That box cannot be delivered yet. The company getting the delivery is off for the weekend. So most of the crew is off on R&R. Bit goes with Jack and Calen to stay with their family. There she meets their mom and sister and Jack's nurse girlfriend, Debby. But trouble follows and the crew ends up on the run from unknown villains.

Lots of action going on. A little bit too busy at times. Still has editing problems and I noticed names were changed from the first book. That made it confusing until I figured out what happened. Still has the serial feel to it and once again ends unfinished. I may continue the series if the next addition comes out fairly quickly. Otherwise, I will probably forget all about this series.

This story centers around the crew of an outdated interstellar cargo spaceship that leaves Earth and manages to outmaneuver and fight off space pirates on their way to Mars. Once they arrive with their precious cargo, the embryos of genetically modified animals intended to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, things start to spin out of control. The buyer can’t take delivery over the weekend, so the captain places the crew on leave. As soon as Bit, the main character, leaves the ship she realizes that she is being followed by an unknown man. Bit is an indentured servant to the captain of the ship due to her parent’s debt and has known no other life. Sadly, she was won by the captain during a card game. She ends up staying with Captain Jack Macleef and another crew member named Calen at Jack’s place. But problems soon arise because someone really wants to steal those embryos. Bit and the rest of the crew end up fighting for their lives and each altercation cleverly reveals small snippets of the involved character’s past.
It was great to see Bit grow stronger, more confident and courageous as the story progressed. I was rooting for her all the way to the end. She is a very interesting character and someone I could relate to right away. This book is fast paced, there is lots of action, and the characters are interesting. The book is full of unexpected twists and the author did a good job in detailing the action scenes. I have not read the first book in the series, but I do plan on reading it next.

I like Bit and I am glad she gets a bit of a backbone in this book when it comes to her admirers... I mean crewmates. If only she didn't do so many silly things - she is the equivalent of the girl in a horror movie that calls out hello to the killer - then investigates instead of running away. Yeah some bad choices happening here.

I'm still on the fence as to which one she needs to end up with :)

First of all, this is not high literature, what it is though is a lot of fun, it's action packed, and all over very well written, when you look away from some of the grammatical errors, then again, I wouldn't manage even half of that, so who am I to speak.

It's a fun story, and the characters are starting to feel really at home, already in this second book, and from the teaser in the end, the next one is probably also going to be fun. I'm for sure going to read the next one in the series, I just need to read something else for a little while.

So while this may qualify more as space soap opera than space opera, I find the characters and the places to be very well described, it's so easy to imagine the places and the people. And when there are some very strange explanations why things ended up how they is, I kind of think that's not what's the important and interesting part of the book, and choose to just glance over it, and let the fun story go on.

So if you're able to just ignore some small niggles, this is a quick fun book, full of adventure and likeable characters, I enjoyed it a lot.

Um.. My thoughts on this book:

I really like the characters and how the story is building, it's just a shame about the inconsistencies, typo's and bad literacy.

Bit, the main character is interesting, some times annoying but I still would like to know more about her and her past, and her goal of finding her sister's child.

Blaine um.. well you will have to read about all the issues Bit has with him. Granted some of his issues aren't his fault they have just been emphasised, and blown out of proportion due to him being... . (read the book to find out lol).

Book two focuses on them trying to deliver the cargo they picked up on Earth, and the issues all that entail. Thrown into the scenario someone is following Bit. There are a bunch of scuffles, fights and running for their lives moments. They also have to deal with protestors, Jack's girlfriend on Mars, and Bit getting kidnapped.

All in all if it wasn't for the inconstancies, typos and well, the writing style, I would give this book a lot more stars. It has serious potential to be a really good set of books.

This little indentured servant is smart-street smart--Even though most of her life was spent in servitude. There is someone following her and she manages to get away from him. Then there are those embryos--someone is really trying to get them. Their homes are trashed--their bodies are beaten up--nobody really knows what is going on--

One of the men who was asked to take Bit to a safe house for a while--said something to Bit--who decided that that is where they should go--well she kind of took off and hoped he would follow--which he did. What they ultimately found out---just as they were all about to get murdered or worse--they made it back to that club and all's well that ends well!!

This was definitely fast moving with major twists and turns.

So who was that man who was stalking Bit? You will have to read this novel to find out.

This is an enjoyable story about Bit, as an indentured slave who is now on board a trade ship with a cargo which puts the crew in danger. But that is not the only trouble for her...

Bit is an unusual character, a young woman yet not as mature as she would have been if she'd been free. She's uneducated and is used to being beaten; certainly a harsh life. However, her new 'family' is changing her perspective. She is brave and sad and trying to find her place in this unfair fantasy world.

Lots of action and adventure; who knows what will happen next?

Well-written and a recommended read.

This is the second book in a series and there was quite a quality drop off from the first. The first book had a reasonably clear story arc with interesting new characters that made it easier to ignore editing mistakes. But this book had a story that was all over the place with action scenes that fell flat when they should have been exciting. This made it harder to ignore the editing mistakes throughout. It's interesting that the free first book was so much better than the second which cost me money.

Nicely set-up tale of Jack Macleef and 'Bit', and the rest of their interstellar crew, delivering a consignment to Mars. Only, it doesn't turn out to be as simple as that... Protestors turn up at odd times, the crew seem to be being pursued, and there are a succession of violent confrontations, and a variety of odd-ball characters. Original, free-flowing, and extremely well-written.

But life

But is growing in her new environment with the realization that the new people are her family. The struggles she is going through just make her stinger and in the end a better person. This book was great to read. Looking forward to the next one.

Perils in Space

This second book in the series, Echoes of Sol, is as much fun as the first. However, it’s built on the characters and it makes for a more rounded read.

Bit and the crew are trying to deliver a precious cargo to a company on Mars, the crew’s home planet. However, the cargo seems to have attracted far too much attention. On top of that, Blaine is acting strangely possessive of Bit. Bit is also scared that she is being followed. It could all be linked together, but no one knows.

This book has Bit and the crew dashing around the city on Mars, fighting for their lives, whilst revealing something of their past with each encounter.

It’s a fun read, but in addition the characters are well rounded, the plot is well paced and the writing is articulate and fluid. It’s definitely a good distraction read.

I bought the first book "free" and liked it so much I wanted to get the second, too.

Despite all the action, this book still feels character-driven. One thing I think that Dufour does fantastically is distinguishing the characters. Even though there are quite a few men, some of whom vying for Bit's attention to varying degrees, they are all distinct and engaging.

I love romance in sci-fi, but I love that the importance in this book is not that Bit will be "healed" by a romantic relationship, but rather she needs to heal first...and the men who know this are waiting for their chance.

The science fiction world built is cohesive, just familiar enough to appreciate the differences in technology and culture, with hints and explanations dropped in as needed instead of "info-dumped." Again, the action was fun, pretty much dominated the content of the book.

The editing was a little rough, but the writing, world- and character-building were great.

SPOILER (sort of): One thing I didn't quite understand, but maybe this will be explained later, is why Bit's old boss wanted her returned so badly, especially to the point of sending someone to Mars to get her back.

Broken and Hunted is the second in the Echoes of Sol series. It picks up with the crew on Mars to deliver their cargo and enjoy the Holiday weekend. It turns out to be the worst weekend possible with the crew running for their lives from more than one danger. Some of the action gets a bit ridiculous and repetitive, but it does keep you turning the pages. We do get some advancement with Bit and the relationships of the crew. Some positive, some not so much. Bit grows stronger, braver, even impulsive. Sometimes it's hard to support her decisions, but it does seem natural that she would make mistakes since she's never been free to think for herself before. The rest of the crew characters become more developed in this book. These are really likable guys and I like how each fits with Bit in a different way.

All in all this is a fast, fun read that wraps up one storyline and prepares you for book three in the end.

The crew of the Lenore believe that they are carrying normal cargo as they head towards Mars, but perhaps things are not as they seem. The action more or less begins straight away, which was great for me, as I hadn't read book one, yet still managed to get completely sucked into the story.

Over the space (excuse the pun) of a holiday weekend, Bit, Oden, Jack and Calen, confront a series of threats. Each character develops during the tense plot that never lets up and it's clear to me that the author intended to make, Bit, the strongest member of the cast.

The writing was also straightforward and easy to read. The story would be great for Y/A and adults of any age.
All in all, an entertaining read. 5 stars from me

Broken and Hunted was a fast paced, enjoyable story. It is full of action and intrigue. More sci-fi adventure story than romance, The characters race around the Martian city trying to figure out who is attacking them. Some of the action gets a bit ridiculous and repetitive at tomes. Enough happens among the relationships of the characters that I can imagine where the Bit's romantic relationship might be headed in future. I am sure the author will have a few surprises waiting for us in that plot line. Bit grows stronger and more courageous, even impulsive and bold. The rest of the characters of the crew are more developed and likable.

The bones are there for a good sequel. But,
The entire book was spent running from enemies. Several of the people had injuries that made it just a little unrealistic for me. I understand that Bit is struggling with more freedom than she has ever had and actually having friends that care about her but her emotional rollercoaster felt more like multiple personality disorder. As far as the men, her shipmates, they are not Alpha males. At least not like I'm used to in a book. They all seem to be indecisive and frightened by everything.
Although I was a bit disappointed with this second book, I will probably read the next one. Like I mentioned, the bones are there.

Bit's story continues As the crew heads to Mars to make a delivery and discover they are the subject of controversy and protest because of their cargo. An interesting story line, but the real heart of the story is Bit learning how to be a free, young woman in a crew of men.

Definitely a Y A story. Not really much sci fi. The first book was free, and this one was 99 cents. The books aren't long enough or sci fi enough for me to continue it at 3.99 or more a book.

Good finish

A very nice finish to the first book. I would really, really like to read about further adventures of this crew. It would so make an interesting series. It's really nice to read a SF book that doesn't turn into a vehicle for erotica. Recommend. Maybe not so scientific, but a very good space opera style.

When's the next one?

I like the story enough to overlook the grammatical errors, typos and the abrupt ending. I like the characters enough to want to know more about them and what happens to them.

Sucked me in.

Great story, well-crafted characters, and an action-packed plot made this an exciting read. The book could do with another round of editing, but if you can look past the occasional typo you'll find it's well worth your time. Fun!
