Stock Market 101 is a crisp treatment of the Stock Market. It talks about what it is and how it works, throwing in some history and famous figures along the way. It talks about how most of the trading is now done on computers, what exactly a stock is, and how it pays off and so on. Since the book is an introduction to the world of stocks, it has a number of other resources that you can look up on the internet.
The book was set to print in 2016 so it doesn’t have the latest on how the economy is doing or anything like that, but it does talk about how the economy and stock market are linked as certain events occur. It talks about the so-called ‘Black days,’ where the market tanks by an appreciable fraction, and it talks about investors and power players that are either famous or infamous as the case may be.
Since the stock market is pretty old by the standards of a person, it means we also got to see different bubbles and ways that they try to swindle people. Then the Securities and Exchange Commission came into the field and things have been a bit better I suppose. All in all, the book was pretty good. I like books that teach me things, and this book did have some things to offer. Since it is a basic primer, don’t expect to get any deep, superlative advice.
This was a good high-level overview of the stock market. The only thing I found strange was the abrupt ending of the book immediately after talking about Ponzi schemes. For people seriously interested in trading, this is of course just a tour, but it will at least bring awareness to some of the key components of trading and investing in stocks.
Easy, structured, about the history of stock exchanges, interesting investors and how to choose stocks to invest in (read company financial reports, especially Footnotes).
" The world's first stock exchange opened in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1460.
Value investors are on the prowl for bargains, and they're more inclined than growth investors to analyze companies by using such data as sales volume, earnings, and cash flow. The philosophy here is that value companies are actually undervalued, so their stock price doesn't truly represent how much they're worth. In fact, value investors often ignore share prices because they have nothing to do with the company's worth. Rather, the value to these investors is in the potential returns that come with buying and holding a good business.
Ticker Trivia
Famed financial guru Benjamin Graham pioneered the value investing style, focusing attention on what companies were actually worth rather than on share price movement.
Buffett made his first investment when he was just eleven years old, six shares of a company called Cities Service Preferred (he gave three of those shares to his sister). That he chose to put his money in the market is not so surprising, considering his father was a stockbroker, who immersed young Warren in the world of finance.
Nebraska, Buffett's home state, truly suffered during the Great Depression, and growing up in that time and place had a lifelong impact on him. Thrifty with his money, and always looking to earn more, Buffett worked on a paper route at age thirteen. And at age fourteen, he earned enough to file his first tax return.
Ticker Trivia
Warren Buffett made his first million by the time he was thirty-two years old.
Then Ponzi realized he could make even more money if he had investors, and his postage plan rapidly turned into a fiddle. He began using the money from new investors to pay false returns to previous investors. Ponzi attracted thousands of New Englanders by promising sky-high 50% to 100% returns in ninety days, a much more tempting return than the annual 5% they could earn on their savings accounts. At one point, he was said to make $250,000 in a single day. But the scheme finally unraveled when investors tried to claim their money.
By the time of his arrest (for more than eighty counts of mail fraud) on August 12, 1920, Charles Ponzi owed investors nearly $7 million.
A Ponzi scheme is any investment swindle where supposed returns are paid to existing investors with money taken in from new investors. The schemers rope in new investors with the promise of much higher than average returns, ostensibly from blockbuster money-making opportunities with very little downside risk. Early investors receive their promised returns as new money flows in, giving the appearance of real profits from a successful business venture."
A must-read primer for anyone planning to venture into the world of stocks. In a very simplified manner, it demystifies the jargons and concepts of the stock market that make it look like a forbidden land. Each complicated explanation is followed by a simple example to ease your journey through the book. Not only does it tell you what to look for in the world of stocks, but also about things to look out for. Apart from the definitions, the book comes packed with stories of companies, events and people who played an important role in shaping the stock market as it is today. If not anything, at least after reading this book you will have a better grasp at how Bane managed to bankrupt Bruce Wayne in TDKR, the BIG SHORT may seem a little less complicated and you will be able to decipher the ticker tape that scrolls at the bottom of your favourite new channel.
This is an incredibly easy to follow book and an interesting one at that! If you are one of those people who wants to learn about the market but don't know where to start, this is your place. It can be read from cover-to-cover or just as a reference guide. I can't recommend this book enough.
Another use for this book is as a teacher. I am doing a few days on the Stock Market and I think he does a great job making it easy to understand so I will pull some of his explanations to use in the classroom.
Reading about the stock market can be a little dry and boring, but learning about how it works and learning how to be a successful investor is worth the time and effort put in. I like Michele Cagan’s books. What I liked best in this book was near the end she discussed people that I think are worth doing additional reading and research about. Recommend to all who wish to learn basic concepts and terminology about the market.
True to the title, this book gives a very good introduction to the US stock market. It introduces basic terminology, offers few financial advice and tells the story of some famous investors. This is recommended for anyone who are starting out on stock market investing. I also recommend "How Finance Works" by Mihir Desai, "The Long and the Short of It" by John Kay, and Investopedia.
This book is great for beginners who are looking to learn more about the stock markets. It provides great insights into stock analysis, markets, regulations and jargons. It is extremely valuable mostly for people who are unfamiliar with the stock market. It is a quick read and the author has simplified the concepts incredibly, which otherwise can be arduous.
A lot of helpful stuff. I feel like it could have been organized a bit better. A lot of information overlaps, becomes redundant, and it takes some effort to make sense of all the info. It covers all the fundamentals well - you just have to be really patient with the book if it's an unfamiliar subject bec it will be challenging to keep being interested.
This book is very rudimentary and covers (as far as I know) the essentials of the Stock Market. It doesn't delve deep into the economics, accounting, and laws (which is a must know for anyone wanting to delve into the stock market), but this book is titled Stock Market 101 and not Investing 101. I believe that more pictures or diagram is helpful to understood this book better, but the author doesn't provide this at all.
Well, its not a book that goes deep inside stock market but provides basic information that are good for beginners, the book by itself is not enough for a beginner but it acts as one of the steeping stones to learn more . While most of the things presented here not new compared to other books , I found the section with corporate takeover and tactics very interesting .
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A very well written, simple to understand guide to understanding the ins and outs of the stock market. From the bond market to mutual funds, to single funds, you will gain good knowledge of how to put your money to work. Recommended.
A solid primer and overview of the basics of the market: what it is, how it works, and the vocabulary. Not a guide to investing, nor does it pretend to be. Certainly a worthwhile read for anyone seeking a foundational understanding of how the stock market works, and a suggested read for those (22-27) entering the workforce and looking ahead with an eye on building a financial future.
This book gives a widely encompassing surface level view of the stock market as a whole, plus all the key terminology and proceedings within it for a new investor to be comfortable navigating it. Definitely worth picking up for small-timers.
A very informative guide to the stock market that you can have sitting on your desk for quick reference in the future. I'd say it's a must-read for anyone that is interested in beginning to invest in the stock market.
Again Michele Cagan surprised us with her knowledge, this book can be used as guidance for biggners its has alot of wide information coverage about stock,,, So you will have overview of stock market
Really great overview of the stock market. Not only did she explain what everything meant, but she also dove into the history of the stock exchange, important figures, major crashes, etc. I highly recommend this book to anybody trying to gain a deep understanding of the stock exchange and economy.
This book isn’t designed to teach you how to invest, it’s more of an informative primer. Goes over terms and definitions related to the stock market, the history of the market, and other background knowledge. Some famous people/ cases such as Bernie Madoff and Warren Buffet are also discussed.
It’s important to understand the history of the stock market and to understand what scam artists do and what to look for. What kind of person you want to be as an investor and ALWAYS do your research before buying into a stock. Great book to learn the history of the stock market.
This book is ok. I don't feel like it is a great book for beginners, you have to have some sort of prior knowledge to understand the book (which I did not)
A great book for anyone who’s looking to get into the stock market. Gives you enough basic knowledge and really breaks down big concepts to bite size ones!
Bukunya bagus dan menjelaskan banyak istilah dan sejarah dari pasar modal. Di bagian akhirnya menjelaskan taktik penipuan dari broker-broker saham dan kisah sukses para jagoan di bidang saham.
