Go on a hair-raising journey from the scorching ashes of Pompeii, to a mysterious lakebed, and through a disturbing maze-like bunker. Will the story of a girl freed from her chains lift your spirit? Would you believe that good luck has its downsides? Encounter horrors hiding in plain sight within this collection of twelve tales of terror designed to shock and frighten you. You might discover fears you never knew you had.
I have been following Manen's career since about 2015, maybe longer, and knew I had wanted to pick up a copy of this book to show support for their works. It has been so long since the stories were written that I did not remember reading them online in the past, but they all have Manen's clear tone and prose style that he's worked hard on developing over the years.
You can relate to any character in this book- I mean, who wouldn't put their lives in jeopardy to ensure they had a pristine cup of joe every morning before work? Who wouldn't attempt to rescue a girl you found shackled in a shed? Manen's stories always include everyday people dealing with extraordinary circumstances. They behave perfectly as you or I would. Manen's characters are believable, and that's one thing I struggle with sometimes with authors, where I will be like "Nope, uh uh, no one would do that."
Manen has a specific vibe to his work as well that is refreshing to see in young, modern authors, where their tone and the specific turns of phrase he uses seems a bit timeless, like they'd be relevant 20 years ago, and 20 years ahead. He seems at ease writing from the perspective of many different kinds of characters, whether a young mischievous child getting themselves in over their head, a career oriented woman working in a museum, or an extremely unlucky man turning to a life of drugs as a result of their despair.
He has a love of puns that shines through occasionally, making you laugh in unexpected ways- The Pigeons Around Here Aren't Real was one of my fave stories in this collection lol, and you can tell he had fun while writing it.
Pick up this book asap, then prepare to deep dive into Manen's many Nosleep works, whether on Reddit or The Nosleep Podcast, because his storytelling has only gotten better and more concise over the years!
I only wish he'd collect more of his works in novel form, because by now there's so many stories that could be collected by theme, and there'd be more to purchase lol. A Halloween collection would be amazing from Manen, and I am excited to see what he creates in the future.
