Lust is the sin that has condemned Linda to spend nine months of her life isolated from the world she knows. In 1964 Australia, the world around her is rapidly changing but she finds herself in a situation where the world has virtually stood still. For seventeen year old Linda, she is about to discover a dark side of life that she never knew existed. When her parents discover that she is pregnant they leave her at Loxely House, a secluded home for wayward girls ran by a group of strict nuns. Among the other girls, Linda is about to discover more about life and the harsh realities that their innocence once protected them from. As her pregnancy moves forward, Linda’s life becomes more and more distanced from the world she had always known. She must battle constant change as the world at Loxely House takes its toll on her and the other girls, friends that she will never see again. Linda’s story is that of her punishment for her sin of Lust, a story that many women in Australia endured in this time period without choices for women who were unwed and pregnant.
Lust is a young adult novel that portrays the unfortunate circumstances of sixteen-year-old, Linda Kiwaski's life, as an unwed pregnant teenager, in 1964 Austrailia. Linda starts off as a smart and ambitious teen who falls victim to lust with an exemplary teen boy, Wil. Things escalate between Linda and Wil once, and afterwards, she finds outs that she has become pregnant. When her parents discover the truth, they immediately send her to the strict and frigid home for troubled girls called Loxely House, ran by Sister Catherine and Sister Eunice...and that is when Linda discovers just how cold life can truly be. Though she befriends the other 'wayward' teens, whom she may never get a chance to see again, Linda finds herself becoming more and more detached as her pregnancy moves further along. There are things that she couldn't have dreamed about in a million years that she has seen, which helped her become the distant and reclusive person she becomes by the end of the book. I was not sure what to expect from this novel. I didn't expect to feel this compassionate about the characters, but I do and that says a lot! I cared about what happened to Mary...did she do what she said she was going to do, regardless of the circumstances? What happened to Linda when she got home? Did Wil ever find out? And what happened to the other girls? I truly care about these characters and that makes this book worthy of each and every one of the 5 stars given. This novel was an eye-opener, sad but incredibly detailed that had my absolute attention from start to finish, with its vivid descriptions and unpredictable dialogue that gave a suspenseful edge to the novel. Overall, I enjoyed this book 110% and hope the author continues writing, because it is a gift that she clearly has
Author Lola Blake has created a story that tells the heartbreak of hundreds of thousands of young women. She tells the story of how unwed girls were forced to give up their babies against their will. The story takes place in Australia, but is true of so many other countries. Within the first few chapters I had already run the gamut of emotions including anger, sadness, heartbreak, and betrayal. Several instances While I found myself crying from sadness and pain of these young women, I loved the book and could not put it down once I started reading. The main character, Linda, has found herself an unwed mother in 1964. True to those days, she was forced by her parents to retreat to a convent so she could quietly have her baby. Family’s did this to not tarnish the family name. Blake’s story runs the length of Linda’s pregnancy from discovery to birth. You learn the back story of a girl with a good upbringing who finds herself in love and pregnant. Linda’s tale is one of sadness and possible regret. Does she really want to give up her baby? Could she and the father raise the child and be a family? The answers to these questions are found in the recesses of Blake’s heartbreaking account. Her story hit home for me. I was one of those women who was being forced to give up my baby at 17. And this took place in the United States. I fought against my parent’s decision and was one of the lucky ones who was able to keep her baby. It was the best decision I ever made. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book is so much more than Linda's story! The Author carefully builds the other girls characters even though you don't even know their second name let alone anything else about them! This book has it all. Romance and running away to defiance and darkness! Once I got started it swept me up in the injustice of it all and by the end I was willing Linda not to do what was expected of her!
The suspense is brilliantly crafted, ebbing and flowing throughout as girls come and go to that horrible place. The story is fast paced and not for the faint hearted in places; a captivating read that I found myself thinking about long after putting down for the day.
I'd love to see what happens to the other girls in this story and understand their lives which is testament to the author's ability to leave you wanting more.
The only thing I wish was different was the ending....I felt a little deflated that it didn't lead where I so hoped it would.
But don't let that put you off picking up this book this summer I thoroughly enjoyed reading it!
This review is from: Lust: A Seven Sisters Novel (Kindle Edition) This is a very convincing and harrowing tale about what used to happen to young women when they fell pregnant and were sent away by their parents to save shaming the family name back home. I wasn't going to read this book because I mistook the title and cover to be an erotica book (which is not my favourite genre), but when I took a closer look at the subject it drew me in. I read the whole book in one sitting on my phone. The subject is a shocking and serious part of our history and very well executed. I look forward to reading the next book of this series.
