Against all odds, Greg and Samantha seemed to have cheated Fate when they escaped Regent Danata. Miraculously, the two Morphids remain bound together, attempting to lead a normal, “human” life, even as fear of the evil woman’s revenge clouds their days.
As Sam and Greg struggle to grow their relationship, she is haunted by memories of Ashby, her Morphid soul mate, and burning questions of the identity of her real parents. As if that wasn’t enough, her untried Morphid instincts fill her with doubt and indecision, taking her once simple life in directions she could never have imagined.
When Greg’s Keeper sense foretells danger, however, they abandon all dreams of normalcy and find no other choice but to flee. Armed with nothing but their Morphid skills, Sam sets their course toward New York City, a place that calls to her deeper instincts. As her Keeper, Greg must follow but knows danger awaits.
Thus begins a quest that will test their bond and may spell the end of all they hold dear. It’s only a matter of time before Regent Danata and chaos storm into their lives again.

This book continues the story of the excellent Morphid Chronicles. At the end of the last book, Sam and Ashby had their Morphid couples’ bond ripped asunder by Ashby’s mother, the evil Regent – and Ripper – Danata. Around the same time, Sam uses her Weaver skills for the first time to repair the ripped couples’ bond between the then half-witted Uncle Bernard and Roanna. Sam and her Keeper, Greg, escape from Danata, leaving Ashby behind, believing him dead Life seems almost back to normal for Sam and Greg, except for that enormous black hole in Sam’s heart where Ashby used to be. Now, at least she does not have to choose between Greg and Ashby, and can devote herself entirely to Greg – despite their love being proscribed by Morphid tradition. However, it is not long before Greg senses danger, and he and Sam are forced to flee. The action is fast-paced. Danata and Viridian are suitably evil and relentless. More stunningly beautiful Morphids join the side of good, as well as Sam’s human best friend, Brooke. Victims of Danata’s many Ripper crimes are discovered as empty shells in a homeless shelter in New York, and the true Regent is found alive and well. I really like the characters in this series (except Danata and Viridian, of course). They are not perfect, but their flaws are usually forgivable. Each personality is rounded and beautifully drawn, and – despite this being a fantasy – are all quite believable, and you become very emotionally involved in their fates. While the main driving forces of this good vs evil series are love and justice versus a hunger for power, the defining emotion is grief. When anyone loses somebody they love, there is an emptiness, a visceral absence in the soul. Time does not heal the yawning wound, but usually does allow the person to learn to cope with the loss, and if they are lucky, to find someone else to love. Some just die of a broken heart. That is for Humans. For Morphids, there is only one soulmate, ever, in the entire world – one person that they will love unconditionally and without limit. They are linked spiritually (and possibly physically) by their vinculums, and if that link is ever torn apart – by death or by Ripping – then their future can only be bleak. Morphids with a torn vinculum suffer unending, all-consuming grief. Some commit suicide, others are hollowed out shells, devoid of their life-force. Some just go insane. Sam is the exception. She survives being Ripped away from her soul-mate, Ashby, with all her faculties intact. She loves Greg (and he her), and she may just have the ability to heal the overwhelming grief of the other Ripped Morphids by Weaving their vinculums. Suddenly, there is hope in the Morphid world – something that Danata – who rules by fear – cannot countenance. I loved this book just as much as the first in the series, and cannot wait to see how it all works out. I had to start book three, “Weaver”, immediately, and it is already promising to be just as engrossing. I highly recommend this series.
What I love about this book: 1. The author has created an entirely new species (the morphids). I always love that in a book! 2. I am excited to read about each new morhpid "Superpower" that comes along in the book. Originally I thought there would only be a few, but in this book the readers were introduced to so many new ones. 3. The characters developed a lot more in this book. Characters from book 1 were better developed and more intwined in book 2. 4. I loved the changing perspectives. Not only do Sam, Ashby, and Greg have their alternating perspectives shown, but Brooke and Veridian have so many of their own chapters this time. 5. I loved that I could not put the book down. I was constantly left on a cliffhanger due to the alternating perspectives, and had to keep reading until I got to that character again. I finished the book in a day, it was that good. 6. I enjoyed that new characters were introduced in this book, like Joao and his sister. I also like that Perry was in this book more and I felt like I really got to understand more of the morhpid culture and powers because of these characters.
The only con of this book are the few grammatical errors. I noticed about 10, including a missing word or a singular word that needed to be plural. In no means did it take away from the story. If you can get over that, this is one of the most fantastic and well written YA novels I have ever read! In conclusion, I am a huge fan of this series and cannot wait for the next book to come out. This is a great book for any teen or lover of the YA genre, and I highly recommend it.
Another wonderfully written book by Ingrid Seymour. The characters come alive and have vibrant voices - especially Brooke, Sam's bubbly but smart friend. I liked how Sam and Greg's relationship grew and was tested throughout the story.
Excuse me while I go into stasis and wait for Book 3 *I volunteered to read and honestly review a Kindle version of this book*
I love this series! I didn't think it could get better after Keeper but Ripper demolished that opinion. I don't understand why these books aren't covering my book-news feed all the time. How can so few people have heard of and read these books? They should be right up there with other acclaimed series like The Maze Runner, Divergent, The Lunar Chronicles, ect. I actually loved this book more than I loved those other series actually!
There's always something going, it never gets boring. The characters are layered can be equally loveable or annoying. All of the characters are easy to connect to and every one of them make you FEEL something, whether it's love, hate, compassion, or hope.
The writing is flawless. I was immediately caught right back up in the story, the same way the Keeper captured me. It's beyond easy to imagine each and every moment without the burden of too much detail. The character growth was perfect and believable. The conversations were natural and realistic. There was never a moment that didn't flow perfectly.
I really can't say enough about this series! This author is quickly becoming one of my favorites and I can't wait for Weaver!!!
I could not wait to start this book after finishing the first book, but it took me so long to finish because I could not handle the stress the book was giving me! That is an excellent thing because the storyline and the speed and depth of the action was just that good that I had to pace myself!
I have two favorite things about this second book; 1) the fact that Seymour brings in more characters that become pivotal to the storyline and the development of the plot is just phenomenal. I absolutely love all the of the characters, even the bad guys. 2) the book was very fast paced but at the same time, the writing was very thorough and there weren't any gaps in the story. What you're left to wonder are normal things that end up being answered later. The writing is just so great and the typos are so minimal that reading is enjoyable.
The storyline is just great. The development is so immense that end this book and no wanting to start the third book is impossible. The cliff hanger is that good. I am going to be so honest and say that there will times where you're frustrated and dislike a character here and there, but it's all for the best. I absolutely enjoyed that as the reader, we become much more a part of the morphid world and learn a lot more things about their kind. The character development is great and keeps you wanting more. The romance becomes something of fairy tales but it's nothing bad. I am really looking forward to what happens in the last book of this series. So many questions and so many possibilities. I would highly recommend this series to anyone.
I am enjoying this series, it kind of reminds of the Lux books. The series was about Alien races hiding amongst humans which i read ages ago and is still a favourite of mine. Sam is quite selfless and deserving compared to the evil Queen Danata who loves power more than anything. I was surprised that Ashby did not meet his father in New York as he needed a connection and this seemed like a familial one to explore. Maybe the timing was not right, Brooke and Perry are a cute distraction but the love triangle is always there in the background, even if Sam chooses one the other suffers for eternity, kind of harsh if you ask me. Give me freedom of choice anything over fate
Sam and Greg are on the run. They watched Ashby's mother rip his life force out as she shredded the link between Sam and him. Greg's only recourse was to escape and protect her. They don't know what to do. But they had help escaping her castle. But what now??
Ashton dead? His soul is no longer with his body, but is trapped in a dark, desolate place. Vatican is a very powerful and guy and he somehow performs magic. But the link is broken. Greg and Sam....gone.
We find out who her parents are and why Ashby's mother is the regent. It's an interesting story with lots of different actions. You will enjoy it.
Greg and Sam need to escape and decide to drive to New york. Both of them are honing their gifts learning more about them. The story gets a little more complicated as we meet more family members and other victims of (wicked) Donatas acquaintance. Her head sorcerer, (also power hungry) Viridian had plans to help sever the Vinculum ( like a connecting soul) between Samantha and Greg (Sam's protector/Keeper, because Sam is a weaver which can mend other viniculums. Hey this book is really exciting has a great plot and I'm going to purchase the third book right now
Sam's character did not grow as much as I would have liked. For someone who is defying fate on who to love, she doesn't show that defiance in other aspects. I was hoping they would develop more of a solid plan on how to stop Veridan, be more on the offense
Ripper is an excellent sequel to Keeper. The complicated story of the Morphid regency introduced in the first book is thoroughly explained here. Veridian and Danata are wholly evil and the ending is extremely exciting! I'm in agonizing anticipation of part three!
In the second book of the Morphid Chronicles, “Ripper” Greg and Samantha (Sam) have escaped not only Rothblade Castle after Regent Danata ripped the vinculum that bound her son Ashby to his Morphid Companion, but also from Veridan’s vengeance when he stormed her best friend Brooke Perez’s party, setting fire to her house. With nothing more than their backpacks and Morphid skills, Greg and Sam head to New York where she feels her destiny awaits.
Intertwined in an engaging main plot that has Sam drawing closer to Greg while uncovering Danata’s victims at a homeless shelter are compelling subplots that include Ashby’s resurrection, his search for Sam, and Brooke’s inclusion in the “Morphid Order for Regency Fealty” (MORF) an organization working to overthrow Danata and return Roanna as regent. Told from a number of perspectives that include Brooke and Veridan as well as Sam, Ashby, and Greg the plot is fast-paced and full -of -action as tension mounts with surprising twists that keep you on the edge of your seat.
Never lacking in intensity and suspense with Veridan and Regent Danata’s scheming; Sam’s memories of Ashby; and her hope that her free will and love for Greg will undermine her Morphid attachment as well as wanting to know more about her natural parents, the well-developed plot with its realistic dialogue progresses quickly to a shocking climax that begs for another book.
Sixteen -year -old Samantha with her vinculum to Ashley shattered feels guilty as she clings to her Keeper’s love but in New York she finds purpose although her abilities fill her with fear, uncertainty and indecision. Greg Papilio unable to deny his love for Sam is patient, and protective, refusing to put any pressure on her. Yet when his Keeper’s instinct flares, he can still be hot-headed and fierce. Ashby, mentally unstable when he was revived is vengeful, aimless and empty hoping to find Sam and end his torment. For much of the story he’s filled with self-pity, pain and hopelessness, petulant when faced with losing her to his rival. Vibrant and feisty Brooke Perez is frightened when she’s whisked away to the MORF hideout and quickly learns about the Morphids, although her attraction to the smug and mischievous Sorcerer Perry Hambleton renews her self-confidence and tenacious spirit.
Among many new faces is Mateo Espina, the “Caretaker” who’s generous, giving and open; Calisto, a “Winder and her brother Joao, a “Wingmaster” who are wary and defensive having lived under a controlling mother, Roana’s chief advisor and loyal supporter Luana Mirante. All these characters bring the story to life with their complex personalities, intensity, and vitality.
I thoroughly enjoyed “Ripper” and rate it highly. I eagerly await the next book in this captivating series as secrets and lies are unravelled and “MORF” plans a war against Danata’s regime.
I get it. Every story needs a villain. But wow – Regent Danata is a bitch. I thought it was just Ashby that I couldn’t stand – which I should let it be known I still don’t like him – but it’s everyone under this authority. Especially Veridan. He’s up to no good… but I am very interested in seeing what he has up his sleeve. Regenta Danata, however, is the worst of the worst. The fake momma-caring that she shows Ashby in the beginning was an obvious sham and she couldn’t even make it seem authentic and legit.
I love that there were elements that are so true to today’s relationships. Greg and Ashby fighting over the same girl; fighting for Sam’s love and attention, one feeling more entitled than the other *cough – Ashby – cough*, despite Sam making how she feels very clear and choosing free will. The scene with Greg and Sam at the party – every part of it speaks volumes towards couples. I do think Greg was pressuring her a little bit and regardless of whether they’re human or Morphids . . . pressure is pressure.
There were parts of this book that I really liked, some I wasn’t crazy about, and all the chapters with Brooke left me with an indifferent feeling. I didn’t care for Brooke one way or another in Keeper – she had some significance, but her and Sam’s friendship just didn’t seem “right” for one another – now in Ripper her spunky upbeat personality and sarcasm just felt out of place. It added a little “lightness” to such serious situations, but it just felt awkward, too.
I had a gut feeling about the ending being a huge cliffhanger, but I was not expecting what happened. I actually liked the ending. It gave me an inkling of respect – just an inkling! not much – for Ashby, although I wouldn’t put it past him to go back to being an asshole. Even though he was handling it a lot better than what was expected for Morphids, I felt so heartbroken for Greg when Danata ripped his connection to Sam. Not only did he lose his Keeper caste but he was separated from Sam.
Definitely can’t wait for the third in the series to see what the separation has done to Sam and how the group finds her and overall what happens to the Regent and her shady followers.
Ripper was a fantastic continuation of The Morphid Chronicles! This YA series is really draws you in and I love that the author created a new paranormal species, Morphids, that hasn't been done before.
In Ripper, Sam learns more about her powers while she and Greg are on the run from Veridian and Danata. I love how their relationship grows! I also love the spark between Brooke and Perry! The reader gets to see more of Perry's personality that I really enjoyed. Ashby is still a jerk but I have a feeling we would see a different side of him if he stopped being solely focused on finding Sam and their fated connection. I really hope to see a different side of him in the coming book. Maybe he won't be so much of an ass and we can actually like him. lol While still the bad guy, we learn a little bit about Veridian's history and perspective. I expect we will learn more about in the future which I look forward to.
Full of twists, surprises and getting to know some of the background/history of the characters made Ripper an very engaging read that I definitely recommend!
Sam and Greg continue on their journey after Ashby's supposed death. However there are surprises headed their way. The plans that Danata and Veridan make are likely to keep Sam in danger and Greg needs to stay ready to protect her. Unfortunately his Keeper senses don't work that well when he's infatuated with her every move. At the onset of danger Sam and Greg run again. This time Sam's calls get her to New York City. Just how is she going to help all these people who have suffered at the hands of the evil Ripper? As she tries to do the best she can, she has no idea that her parents are trying to find her. Not the human parents, but her Morphid ones. There more than one surprise in the tale and a whole lot of interesting action. Love the way this series is shaping up. Can't wait to read the next book to see how Sam fared with Danata.
Ingrid Seymour’s Ripper (The Morphid Chronicles Book 2) is a truly well done urban fantasy and paranormal romance. It’s a wildly convoluted and exciting ride with a fantastic plot, superb characters in Sam (Samantha) and Greg, a fantastic “big baddie” in Danata and a truly well crafted cast of supporting characters. I can guarantee two things about this book: you’ll really enjoy it and, as any well-done middle book of three will do, it will leave you craving for the next, concluding, book. Frankly, but for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed, I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to Weaver, the concluding book in this series.

In this book the story continues with Greg and Sam fleeing familiar surrounding in an attempt to remain out of the hands of the evil Regent Danata and her high sorcerer, Veridan. Sam is still new to her caste and hasn't completely discovered what her powers will allow her to do. This book is filled with Sam and Greg trying to overcome obstacles thrown in their path and trying to continue to strengthen their bonds to each other. This is a fast-paced drama filled with excitement, intrigue, and danger. Many surprises cause the story to veer in different directions than anticipated. I enjoyed every word in ever chapter!!! It's very hard not to develop an affection for Sam and Greg and the people they hold dear. I recommend this book highly!!!!!
Ripper is the second book in the Morphids Chronicles by Ingrid Seymour. Things get worse before they get better. Ashby is probably the most misunderstood of the characters. He tried to be the dutiful son to his regent mother, but his loyalty blinded him to her evil. Now Sam and Greg are trying to pick up the pieces of a broken bond that has left Sam feeling guilty and Ashby a shell. Fate seems to toy with the morphids. While one has the power to rip, another has the power to weave. But time is running out for Sam and Greg and they might end up like Ashby.
I read this story in KU. This is my honest and voluntary review.
I've been waiting for this installment for so long because I'm such a fan of the Morphid Chronicles! I enjoyed all of the surprises that came with this story. It delves more into the world of the Morphids, along with the sweet budding relationship between Sam and Greg, who at last confront their true feelings toward each other. Ripper will lead you into a page-turning, nail-biting reading frenzy!
This was really a great book. Sam and Greg did a lot of growing up in this book. It was starting to get really interesting, and BAM, it's over, with a cliff hanger of course. I am concerned because of the amount of time between the publishing of the first book and second. I can't find anything that will tell me when the next book will be out, so if anyone knows, please clue me in.
This is a unique twist on the way fate plays out in the lives of everyone. It's about balancing between instincts , feelings, and keeping the sense of self.
I'm so hooked on this series! I love (& hate) the characters at any given time. Poor Sam and Greg are in a constant whirlwind of fear and tragedy. Brooke is just trying to keep up. Everyone else is clueless...and Danata is just plain evil! I need more! More! MORE!
